Star Ocean-The Second Story: A Grand Adventure into the Vast Star Ocean
Dave C. writes about the PS1 RPG should-be-classic, Star Ocean: The Second Story!
[00:00:00] Music A lot of hype surrounding it. I got it and like it was fine. Do you leave those pickles on? Pickles on. Yeah. Some people think it's weird that there's pickles on it. It's all good. Beth, what's up? How are you? I'm fine. I am all right. I am good.
[00:01:43] I don't know how else, what other, you know, what are other, you know,
[00:01:47] words to use?
[00:02:40] I'm not going to play. I'm not going to do that.
[00:02:41] Okay.
[00:02:42] Just everybody calm down.
[00:02:44] I'm not going to do the thing.
[00:02:46] It's fine.
[00:02:47] But I got another funny, slightly funny story with Ferno was the, I wanted
[00:02:53] to finish Dio field.
[00:02:54] I was like, I'm fucking done with this game.
[00:02:57] Um, need it to be the last boss for you.
[00:03:01] No, she was curled up in my lap.
[00:03:02] Um, every single night that I was telling verbally abusing it cats not pulling its weight you know is old and lazy she's beautiful great gorgeous And was it was do you feel made by like the same people that did octopath they use the same font i can't tell you if they used the same if they're the same people isn't that the studio that got absorbed or something recently didn't square like there was Diofield does a really good job of giving you like a core group of people. And there's a lot of like interpersonal like every. And the main character he had, it was, I really liked the main character. Boils now. Boils. Yeah, I'm not gonna, I don't want to spoil. I mean, you guys aren't gonna play it. I feel
[00:08:20] like it's not something that I could see a lot.
[00:08:23] People listen to mislead you. It feels pretty natural the way that that information is kept from you. Which I loved. Greg, you got a, you got a monster hunter update for us. Monster hunter update. Uh, yeah, yeah. Uh, progressing through iceborne. Uh,
[00:09:40] I spent the, like honestly, the last two days farming for two pieces for my
[00:09:46] build. And it was like, things were just not dropping,
[00:10:42] Yeah, part of my... I don't know what that means, but I was doing it.
[00:10:45] Me neither, I just was like...
[00:10:47] Yeah, I don't know.
[00:10:50] Every time you talk about Monster Hunter lately,
[00:10:52] like, just today I was talking about Monster Hunter with my coworker,
[00:10:59] because she had said that she doesn't really like single player games.
[00:11:04] She plays games mostly to play with friends.
[00:11:07] Like, it's more of back in there, brother. I know we should we should play some Monster Hunter soon. Load up load up world on the on the old PlayStation because I've got a few characters waiting
[00:12:21] there.
[00:12:22] Yeah, maybe I will.
[00:12:24] Well, yeah, it just, I don't I get taken if you want man and get it how good is it it's really good right I've only played for a few hours to try not trying out characters seeing who I like because my main is not in the game but yes it's it feels good yeah and got a comprehensive training system which is also nice okay okay yeah well I know like
[00:15:04] we are gonna do that YouTube show which I'll let you say the name of so that I you if you want to because I skipped three four five and I feel like I feel like I got enough like out of the little summary things and yeah the story is out. Yeah. That's what we were doing. And that's all it's going to be now because it's not going to get released. But that thing was interesting. That was kind of like they were kind of, you know,
[00:17:43] riding on the heels of PT in a spell, Sue? Oh, okay. I've never. I've never heard that before in my life and I am a little embarrassed that it is on record how stupid I was for not knowing what you were saying.
[00:19:04] But yeah.
[00:19:05] I'm gonna between. Yeah. And it had like the FMV stuff going on. Yeah, that wasn't necessarily bad. I think like the cuts between the gameplay and then the cut scenes were egregious at times, but. Um, Oh, well, it's not the worst silent hill thing I've laid hands on.
[00:20:23] So it had the one loading screen.
[00:20:26] There's only one loading screen. for what it was. Yeah, it was fine. Now, at the time of this recording, there's been some breaking news that Phil Spencer is going to hold like a conference thing next week about all these rumors going around about Xbox games coming to PlayStation. And at first, like I was seeing it
[00:21:41] popping up and I was like, I've seen this before, like whatever. But, if, if Halo comes to PlayStation, let it, but I don't know what that means for Microsoft though. Like, I don't, like, I don't know what the, what, like what they're doing with this pivot. Like I don't, I don't understand why they would be doing this. Do you think that they're going to switch?
[00:23:00] Like are they going to pivot to like becoming a service instead of like making consoles?
[00:23:06] Do you think? also the possibility that I think I mentioned like looking at as a business, because these are businessmen who run these companies, like this generation, that's true, no. And I would, yeah, obviously, you have to just, everything is a money-making decision. That's what these businesses exist to do.
[00:25:40] And they have spent a lot of money acquiring very large studios that they are going to put it on the PC anyways. Well, even PlayStation 2 as well has been moving their huge games that up until this past generation have always stayed exclusive to their consoles.
[00:27:03] It's never left their consoles. you know, people like I watch gaming podcasts and other things like that. And something that I kind of like listening to all of these people's different perspectives, something that really stuck out to me. And I thought was a really good counterpoint to anybody who wanted to be like, well, then what's the fucking point of getting an Xbox? You can just get it on PlayStation.
[00:28:20] Like why get an Xbox?
[00:28:22] Well, everything that's going to be coming. And I think that's far off. Um. Like that's what I don't think Phil's coming out next week to be like, yeah, everything is also day one on PlayStation Plus. Like, no, that's what if what if it was like, okay.
[00:29:41] Very quick.
[00:29:42] Very quick.
[00:29:43] All I was saying is that they were saying that, um, getting a series, like the on Game Pass, but it's coming to Game Pass on Xbox and PC first. Yeah. Then it'll go to the rest of these things. I would love for Game Pass to show up on PlayStation. It might be a little bit of a pie in the sky, but I don't know. I think it would be cool to have Game Pass on everything.
[00:31:00] Well, there's already been talks of having Game Pass and stuff on Switch.
[00:31:04] That's something that we know has been actually discussed.
[00:32:01] There's obviously stuff they're going to say out loud next week and then there's stuff that they are
[00:32:04] still planning to do internally and are not going to
[00:32:06] like publicly announce.
[00:32:09] I think, yeah, Phil and his,
[00:32:12] the people at Xbox want that to be the eventual goal.
[00:32:16] They would love to have that just the same way
[00:32:18] that wasn't a couple of months ago that he said the thing,
[00:32:21] like Phil, his dream was always to acquire Nintendo.
[00:32:25] Like that's something he wanted Microsoft Xbox to do. break it down. We all have games that we love so, so much. But I think we can all admit that very few games are absolutely perfect. And a lot of these games have mechanics or features in them that we absolutely do not like and wish wasn't there. And so we're
[00:33:40] going to go over the game mechanics that we don't know if you've heard me complain about this before in the past Beth. No, I don't think so. But the way it works in Monster Hunter World, if you want to play multiplayer, and if you're say the three of us were to play and we were to start fresh hunters,
[00:35:02] and we want to go hunt something. We can't hunt together until each of us has independently
[00:36:04] to exit the mission is because in the scenario where we're all starting from fresh, we all have to trigger that cutscene.
[00:36:05] No, it's a real pain in the ass.
[00:36:08] It's so weird.
[00:36:09] Say like Jerry and I had already seen this cutscene.
[00:36:13] What you can do is you trigger your cutscene and you fire up what they call in the game
[00:36:16] an SOS flare.
[00:36:17] Oh, okay.
[00:36:18] We'll just be waiting for the flare and then we can jump in at that point.
[00:36:22] It's so funny.
[00:36:23] Like the visuals of that is really goofy.
[00:36:26] Can't see it.
[00:36:27] Okay guys, it's good. Yeah. But the counterpoint to that is, and I'm not defending, it's stupid as hell. But once you see every monster, once you get through the beginning of the game and you've sighted all the monsters, it stops happening.
[00:37:40] Because you've seen everything and then you can just
[00:37:41] play multiplayer as well.
[00:37:42] Right, but it shouldn't be there in the first place.
[00:37:44] It shouldn't be there in the first place, exactly.
[00:37:46] OK, that they added that. It's been so long since I played that. Can you refresh my memory on how that works again? Okay, it's been quite a while for me as well, so... You just remember how much you hated it. You remember how much I hated it.
[00:39:00] Well, because each of the things, you have to the point I had put so many hours in the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 because I wanted to get all of the blades. And it requires you to grind in fights to get these core drops to then try and open them. So... Uh... And I had a couple, I had like three or four...
[00:41:42] left to get and I gave up because I had spent so much
[00:41:46] time playing.
[00:41:47] And it just was...
[00:42:44] that were designed by these and like these well known artists,
[00:42:48] you could go into like they had like a compendium of all of them and you could go in and you could you know, there was like their voice lines or whatever,
[00:42:51] but it like had the credits of like who was their artist and it's like wild.
[00:42:56] They were really cool.
[00:42:58] And it's funny because I actually recently was looking at that,
[00:43:02] like like the online compendium thing for all those blades, main story. It didn't feel like it necessarily got in the way of me playing. No, it didn't for me, like at all, because I didn't have that need to grind or get actually... When I would get one that was cool, I was like, oh, that's neat. And I was just, yeah, that was it. Yeah, it just was after. And like I said, like it it just didn't work as well as it did once they actually like ironed it out because I mean by the time Resident Evil 4 hit yeah it was really like that inventory management I do like I'm I guess I should specify that I'm mostly talking about the older games and like you are
[00:45:43] so limited to what you can carry and I get then there was even like the whole like Wasn't there like a button that would just like automatically sort it? That's in remake Mmm, that's a cowards button No, I Mean I
[00:47:00] Tend not to use that button because I do like it is oddly satisfying to rearrange
[00:48:05] have to have them in your inventory. But mostly, I feel like they really like started dialing that back after. Well, let me tell you later games have like a key item tab. Yeah, or something
[00:48:13] there's like, it doesn't get in the way. Yeah. Oh, you just pick this thing up. And you know,
[00:48:21] it's not an in an inventory. It just now painful experience for me. You're really bad at it. No, I was, I was fine at that game. That game treated me like garbage, just like it does with everybody else that plays it.
[00:49:43] Not everybody.
[00:50:48] But I had so much fun with the, like, I really liked the inventory management with five because
[00:50:52] when you're playing multiplayer, when you're playing, yeah, you're playing with a friend.
[00:50:56] I loved, um, like going, using one as a pack mule.
[00:51:01] No, when you're playing together with your friend and like, you have like that kind of shared one at the bottom and you're trying to plan out what each person is going to take with them. Greg, what else you got? So I mentioned earlier that I was I picked up Tekken 8 And ever since I don't know when it started it might even be from like the first Tekken game there is a certain
[00:52:20] Subset of characters that have this one move they is fine. But now in modern tech, there is one, two, three, like five characters that have this one, this one exact move, because they all use the same fighting style. And if you're not good at that move, those characters are just not viable to play, the logo. Those two characters are not viable if you can't do that move. Oh. Like the box art characters are not viable. You'll just get blown up if you play anybody online because either someone can do it and has a character that's so much better
[00:55:00] or people are just playing other characters
[00:55:04] that don't need it, you know.
[00:55:07] Anyway, you could make the argument skill issue do it, then the move comes out faster, it does more damage and it's safe on block. If you don't do it, none of those things are true. Where it comes out slower, it does less damage and it's not safe on block. So it's being unable to do this thing, which requires you to hit a button on 1 60th of
[00:56:21] a second.
[00:56:23] If you are unable to do that, it's like you don't know. But my friend Nicole is obsessed. She loves Overcooked a lot every time. Like, when we were living together, she'd randomly just be like, do you want to play Overcooked with me? Even though we had played the first one like, you know, a few times, I'm working on order one. We like, it was wild. I loved it. It was so fun. But anyways, I play a lot. Um, I played a lot with Nicole and like Nicole like doesn't care.
[00:59:01] Like she has fun with everything.
[00:59:02] She's very like, you know, easy breezy kind of person for the most part.
[01:00:07] Those mice took shit from you and over cooked but the mouse in real life did not take shit
[01:00:15] The one in Overcooked us scare off if you go near it
[01:00:19] But I just I can't I I just think it's one of those things that it's like the game
[01:01:27] I think I even though I feel like I want to get like really enraged, I usually am able to
[01:01:36] keep a lid on it and not say anything to me. But Nicole are still like good friends. So that's,
[01:04:22] we had no issues with Overcooked workplace PTSD and sound like you're so speaking of hunger, my next pick is about hunger and it is in survival games like Browning. Sorry, in survival? Survival. I's like, I don't want to serve. Yeah, I really hate to you didn't but you didn't say like you are talking about grounded as a whole But you specifically said I don't want hunger or thirst in my survival games That was the sentence you said
[01:07:01] It's like I don't I don't want a hunger mechanic and don't starve
[01:08:04] I just feel like in certain survival games, like just turning off the hunger, like things like that, it's like, it'd be like playing Subnautica and turning off like the need to
[01:08:09] have oxygen.
[01:08:10] Like, why are you playing?
[01:08:14] Now, correct me if I'm wrong, you are an advocate for, you know, playing games how you want
[01:08:21] to play them and-
[01:08:22] On the difficulty you want to play them.
[01:08:24] Yeah, exactly. Um, have infinite rolling and things like that. That's blasphemy. So it's like, that's the point of those games is to have that style of combat. At that point. And I readily admit, I just don't like that game or that style of game.
[01:09:41] Right. So I'm just like, but I do like grounded.
[01:09:44] I just don't like being hungry and grounded.
[01:09:47] Yeah.
[01:09:48] I just, uh, I don't have any more in this category. What I do have is a little game. I was thinking about this today.
[01:11:00] I forgot this was a fence.
[01:11:02] Yes, it comes with least respect.
[01:11:04] It is now time for Greg's game.
[01:11:08] Oh my God. picture Street Fighter six he's got that be 33 33 Beth what do you think I had no idea who that was. Okay. I know you said not the blonde one or whatever, but I think I was... Not the blonde guy with the mullet. I think I was still picturing the blonde guy who was in all the promotional stuff for six.
[01:13:43] And I was like, he's like...
[01:13:45] Absolutely.
[01:13:46] Yeah, I was all really young. She's been through some shit. I almost passed away when they're telling the old state. I know, old state. I know, that's why it's like they're all way younger than you think.
[01:15:02] So, wait, hang on.
[01:15:05] Can we get some clarification?
[01:15:06] Is this like a first to so many points? I think I'm gonna go... Oh my god, this is so stupid. We're talking about King Koopa, right? Not Doug Bowser. Yeah, right! Bowser. Because I think it'd be really funny if he was only like, if he was like 38.
[01:16:25] I'm just gonna say...
[01:16:27] 100.
[01:17:22] I didn't realize you guys were like seven years older than me.
[01:17:22] Yeah. We're all. Yeah. Everything hurts.
[01:17:27] So that means the winner of Greg's game today is Beth.
[01:17:33] The standing for two to one game is two to one for Beth.
[01:17:39] Oh my God.
[01:17:41] And the game will end July, 2024.
[01:17:45] Oh geez.
[01:18:43] Anybody? Greg, you're on vacation, buddy. I am, but I'm not. Anyway.
[01:18:46] Yeah, we know that you are on vacation, but you're not on vacation. I understand.
[01:18:53] Yeah, thanks for listening to this episode. And if you want to catch us on some other stuff, you can go find us on Twitter at SuperGhostRadio.
[01:19:03] You can find us on Instagram at SuperGhostRadio as well. You got it, Babo. I don't like how much I had to think about that though. I don't think that I wanted to say, you got it, baby, but it came out like Babo.
