EP 68 - HELLDIVERS 2 & FF7 Rebirth | For Liberty!...And Tifa

This week we touch on some pokemon news, Switch 2 and Metroid Prime 4 before jumping into getting hype for the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Then after debating whether or not Gerry would be Cloud or Johnny to Tifa, Greg and Gerry get into their gush over the most non-predatory live service game ever - HELLDIVERS 2! For liberty and democracy!

[00:00:00] Greg how many how many forehead wrinkles are you rocking now?

[00:00:03] Jerry I don't want to talk about that.

[00:00:05] Hahahaha

[00:00:11] It's like a tree you know?

[00:00:13] It's like a tree!

[00:00:17] I got like a...

[00:00:19] I got like a wizard old oak but...

[00:00:21] Hahahaha

[00:00:23] How many wrinkles is the same time you have circles? You too. Hello. Hi. Hi there. We have come to you bearing lots of news and we have come to you on this very day. And yeah, we got we got some stuff to talk about. We got got that final fantasy that's coming out in just a mere.

[00:01:42] What is it now? Less than 24 hours? We're gonna chat a bunch about that So why don't we get kicked off right away? Let's get this let's get this Pokemon thing going because I Probably I could probably go play helldivers for a little while Well, you guys are playing this because I don't know how much I could contribute to this conversation But I will listen intently and I will talk when spoken to

[00:03:03] Very good. You'll find something to talk about

[00:04:05] I am right, was it the guy himself or something? But there was like the AZ was like the guy

[00:04:08] um in

[00:04:10] gen six Who had the fluetta?

[00:04:12] So it's interesting that they're like it's z to a because AZ was someone who was in

[00:04:18] In the game originally and also if you do AZ

[00:04:22] Even though it's like yes, it's said to A but this also area zero and i'm like, oh they're gonna be like

[00:05:23] don't know much about Pokemon like me.

[00:05:27] What what like is this like? Does this look like it's a follow up to Arceus?

[00:05:29] Like, is it that type of thing where you're just like running around and like,

[00:05:32] well, there's been no gameplay.

[00:05:34] I was going to say, love to tell you.

[00:05:36] Oh, there's OK.

[00:05:37] But is it is this supposed to be the sequel to Arceus?

[00:05:41] Because it's not like I highly am, right?

[00:05:43] I think so, like a lot of other

[00:06:41] Pokemon, what was that? Like Pokemon Ranger came out now.

[00:06:44] It might be like Pokemon Legends Rangers

[00:06:46] or something like that.

[00:06:48] So did they specify if this was gonna be a 3D game

[00:06:53] or if it's like, did they specify anything to do with it?

[00:06:57] They just gave us a title card.

[00:06:58] That's it.

[00:06:59] It was a CGI teaser trailer and then yeah, title card.

[00:07:03] So it was literally nothing.

[00:07:06] Just that on.

[00:07:07] This is what giant circle. So when it zooms out in the trailer, you'll almost notice five little circles inside those circles. So it kind of looks like there'll be five districts. And I would speculate similarly to

[00:08:22] legends those five separate districts are gonna like those will be areas that will like have fast or whatever because you're catching so many. So like all of that was really fun and easy, but the actual fights themselves were pretty boring, especially towards the end where it was like, oh, you just like you could, like't be surprised if they did a lot there. Was there anything else? And like, was this a Pokemon Direct? Or like, what was it? I don't know. They also talked about the new mobile card game. So Greg, you didn't watch the whole thing? Or just... I didn't watch any of it.

[00:11:00] Except for the trailer for Z to A.

[00:11:03] Oh, okay.

[00:11:05] Is it called Z to A?

[00:11:06] Or is it ZA?

[00:12:09] love if they did a either kind of like a miniseries or like some shorts with that style or even a game in that style would be really cute. I think it's very distinct but not important

[00:12:16] for this. And Pokemon Unite got an update and yes the you know like how there's dual

[00:12:23] master or master duel for Yu-Gi-Oh! we're getting an app like a year without any new Pokemon games. Give the people some time to you know get the plus it's probably at the work done. Do you think it'll be like a switch to launch? Possible if it's like the, I've been hearing that story for a long time but like dread I Don't know. I feel like there's a lot more hype around Metroid Prime 4 than there is like Metroid. Don't get me wrong I like Metroid dread that was those a fantastic game, but like I don't know

[00:15:01] I think there's a lot more hype surrounding Metroid Prime 4 and especially where it's been so long like and

[00:16:09] crime, the legacy of that series enough to not just throw something out for the sake of getting it out and being like, okay, well, it is what it is. So while, yeah, the extended

[00:16:18] development cycle and not hearing a pe's anthem it in a way.

[00:17:42] It already would be out.

[00:17:44] I think more likely the case is it't coming out in the fall Or like September and it's gonna end up coming out in March They have nothing Really go and there's no new poke switch to is not coming out this year Yeah, I'm sure I seen a Bloomberg thing saying like they pushed it back Like they had intended to try to get it out this year, but they pushed it back to 2025

[00:20:04] That is going to still that is their big game. They put out this like October November

[00:20:08] Yeah, well either way. I'm excited about it

[00:20:16] But a world that I do want to live in every day of my life until things get really bad is the world of Final Fantasy 7 oh, I don't want to in that world at all

[00:21:24] I'll just go pop in and check on Vincent Valentine's coffin every once in a while. You know, give it a little knock and be like, hey, buddy, still still good.

[00:21:28] I still can't. I still can't believe Matt Mercer is voicing him.

[00:21:31] That's going to be so fucking dope.

[00:21:32] That's not. Yeah.

[00:21:34] But you know what? Let's get it.

[00:21:36] Let's let's let's get into some some of this Final Fantasy 7 rebirth hype

[00:21:40] because I've been holding, holding, holding back for a bit.

[00:21:44] Like I've been trying not to to watch very much on it.

[00:21:47] I've only know, man. I don't know if she's like, they, it's like the fans

[00:23:03] were like, naked, hotter. large boobs were like, that's every woman with large boobs. I was like, that's just what boobs look like when you put them in a sports bra. Like she is wearing a sports bra. Her, she, she still has huge tits. They're just not as round because she's wearing a fucking sports bra. So like, cause she's fighting and then you put her in a things that you say Jerry No one's gonna fall for that. I'm not alone No, you're not that's why people like Tifa But hey man, like you got you get cloud isn't like he's like he's so skinny. He's so think

[00:25:43] He's so like he's a very beautiful man. Look man, if we're gonna get shirtless cloud, I hope the hell we get shirtless Barrett. For my friends. No, he's wearing a sailor suit, like in the real original game. No way, was he? Yeah. You didn't notice in that trailer, Jerry? How did you not notice in that trailer with Barrett in the background?

[00:27:00] I wonder how he didn't notice.

[00:27:03] Hmm.

[00:27:05] How did Jerry not notice a giant man in a sailor? he'll do something like that and then, you know, the way you go. Yeah. Bitch about something to do with Mother Earth. You know how in Rema, depending on your conversational choices or things that you do, you, there's like that bonus scene or not bonus scene, but there's that like cut scene that you can get where you could, um, it could be either

[00:28:23] Aerith Tifa or Barrett.

[00:28:27] Uh, his was Barrett and he didn't realize version, it tells you like, hey, you can load up your saves, but you've got to save, you've got to like upload them or something with the PS4 version. So I'm like, Jesus Christ. All right, so download the PS4 version. And I go in and they're not there. And I think why that is is because I no longer have the PS4 that I had that on.

[00:29:40] And at the time, I did not have PS Plus.

[00:29:43] So I did not get to upload those saves to the cloud.

[00:29:47] Those save those go by. Some good shit. That is... I was like, what was I saying? I remember you saying, like, you should go play this because it's really good. Yeah. I mean, I haven't played Final Fantasy 7 Remake since it came out. I literally, I beat it and I was like, cool. I guess I'll just patiently wait for the next one.

[00:31:02] I kind of overlooked, I guess, intergrade, because I had the same problem and I had PlayStation Plus the entire time. I saw that my Final Fantasy 7 save files were saved to I'm gonna play some more tonight, I think, and then probably play a bunch more tomorrow night before the new one comes out. And

[00:35:01] I got real sad when you get to the slums and like you're about to go meet like the Um, oh, you find out that the three of them, I mean, are critically injured, but they didn't die. Uh, it's been, yeah, like I said, it's been a long time since I played, played remake, um, since it came out, which was Jesus that that's almost four years ago. Now, isn't it 2020 2020?

[00:35:03] Yeah, that's crazy.

[00:36:20] Um, but it was so insane though. enemy AI was at times. So really did not enjoy playing that game through the for the combat it at time especially towards the end of the game. I played the whole almost the entire game on like normal difficulty and I got halfway through Shinra building and turned it down because I just was like I'm not going to finish this game because I hate. The aggro is only I'm going to attack the character you're controlling. So Greg, you haven't played a lot of Remake, right? You've only just kind of threw it on? Let's say I played like five hours. OK. What did you think of the combat? I thought it was fine.

[00:37:40] Yeah.

[00:37:42] Yeah, I thought it was fine.

[00:37:43] Perfectly swimming pool.

[00:37:44] I think it's cool.

[00:37:48] But to each their Like, I did not predict. I legitimately just thought that it was just gonna be a straight-up remake of the original game. I didn't think they were gonna actually be like, oh, yeah, we're like, we're throwing a wrench in this and, like, really doing something different. So, like, Beth, what is...

[00:39:03] I guess I have a two-'s going to happen is going to stay the same but it's just going to like the set dressing is going to be different. I just I don't think a whole lot is going to change. Um I don't know because I just

[00:40:23] there there's good they like you know opened it part to be longer, so they added more stuff to fill it out. Well, I think what you're I just like you're leaving Midgard going in the

[00:41:41] same direction as you are in the remake as you were in the original. we saw that cut scene where Zach doesn't die at the end of- Yeah, that was crazy. It was like a flyer or like a bag of chips or something that flew by and there was a

[00:43:00] dog on it.

[00:43:01] And the dog that was on it is different than the dog that we were seeing throughout the

[00:43:04] entire game. stuff just gonna be like cutscenes that happen that are like... I hope we get to see him a little bit more. I hope we get a little bit more of him and they flesh that stuff out. And who knows, it would be crazy to see some like Crisis Core characters actually show up in this in a weird way. Something that... Okay, so I would... As I've said, I want to play it. When I saw names and characters and things from Dirge of Cerberus, I was like, oh, that's awesome. And then there's the secret boss is Weiss. He's from Dirge of Cerberus. And you're getting basically like,

[00:45:40] and then yeah, SAC with Crisis Court.

[00:45:42] It's kind of like, you're getting all of these things.

[00:45:46] Interesting was that they said that Vincent This is going to be unreal. But I'm trying to taper my expectations a little bit because it might be a bit of a long shot to think that way. I can tell you my, OK, here's what I think. Here's my true belief is that the end of this game

[00:47:02] is going to be with Aerith dying at the Temple of the Ancients.

[00:47:07] That's where this game's going to end yeah, so I'll tell you like here This is what's the Greg's enormous prediction here. I I'm of two minds of how we could How it could turn out?

[00:48:26] Possibility one and there are only these two in my mind possibility one is that Please, please just keep her alive. I almost I almost promise you she's going to live, but be aware that she should be dead. Yeah, I'm like, that's what I want to happen. That's my, like I said, that's my pie in the sky is like, for a couple reasons. One, I want her around longer, because she's like my favorite. Another reason I think like, from like a marketing standpoint,

[00:49:44] you would want her there so that you can market the game, like the third game, and she's like,

[00:50:42] Is that the name of the last one?

[00:50:46] That's what I think the third, the last one's going to be called. That's why I think the third one's going to be called.

[00:50:49] Interesting.

[00:50:50] I think the third one's going to be called return.

[00:50:52] Because there's remake, rebirth, and then return.

[00:50:55] And the Crisis Core remake was reunion.

[00:50:57] So there's re-something.

[00:50:59] So I think...

[00:51:03] Also like...

[00:51:04] So that's...

[00:51:05] But I think at the end of the day, I think that they're...

[00:52:05] I never would have imagined in a million years

[00:52:08] how fucking good this game is. Cause like even you said it about the marketing

[00:52:11] and stuff behind this was like, it was okay.

[00:52:14] But I don't know.

[00:52:16] It's hard to-

[00:52:17] The marketing was okay.

[00:52:18] It didn't make you want to play it.

[00:52:19] It did the fake multiplayer chatter and things like that.

[00:52:22] We made fun of that.

[00:52:24] We did.

[00:52:25] And like, it just, it didn't seem like,

[00:52:27] like it was gonna spend a dime. Exactly. And that's that's something that I really want to want to touch on. So let's get into it. Let's let's talk a bit about hell divers here. So I think you summed it up perfectly by saying it is the least predatory live service game ever. Because I even as I was trying to explain this to friends,

[00:53:40] you said that is the one way to put this.

[00:53:42] If somebody asks, well, how live service is it? Because like I,

[00:53:47] for one, do not like live service games. Yeah, yeah, I know. Which is pretty cool. I was 200. I was 200 short on the premium battle pass. So I just went and farmed for an hour and got what I needed and now I have the premium battle pass. Yeah, that's insane. And I feel like at first I didn of this game immediately and like within I don't know 40 minutes we're shouting at each other the same way that the characters actually do and saying things like you know like Just something funny that we do every single time is when we're waiting for one another to join each other's game

[00:56:25] We just stand in the middle of our ship

[00:57:26] time either fighting big bugs just like you would be seeing in Starship Troopers which has a I feel like a huge influence on the the humor and style of this game

[00:57:33] so there's like the big bugs and then there's also missions with robots and

[00:57:38] the they're called the automatons so essentially what you pick where you drop, you drop in, as you said, go find your main objectives sometimes. And what's crazy is it's one of those kinds of games, but in a micro scale kind of, like per mission, where you'll see something in the distance

[00:59:00] and be like, what's that?

[00:59:01] Let's go there and check this out.

[00:59:03] Oh, what's that thing over there?

[00:59:04] All right, let's chorus of the main theme. And it's badass every time. And then it does the same thing when you extract where it has a crescendo to the main theme

[01:00:24] again but with brass and strings this time.

[01:00:27] It's absolutely fantastic. 30 seconds left in total. It takes about two minutes. It takes two minutes for the dropship to come. So we knew we only had like a 30 second window. And it got, because when you call down extraction,

[01:01:42] shit gets real.

[01:01:45] As soon as you hit extraction, you're it totally started to feel like one of those like like monster hunter like okay let's just do one more let's just do one more let's just do one more run and yeah like it just it's insane cool about this game is that when your when your buddy falls down and dies You don't go over and just hold a or something or hold the square button to like revive No, no what you have to do is you hold your left bumper or L1 and then you have to punch in a combo of

[01:04:24] d-pad

[01:04:26] like a string of d-pad something, but like when you're in this shit and you have to put those codes in and you fuck it up, you really feel the fuck up and you have to start over and do it again. Yeah. Well, and sometimes it is tense. Yeah. And dude, tell me again about what you told me today about your suicide mission. Oh, so like I was playing with some other friends and we did a suicide mission for the

[01:05:43] first time.

[01:05:44] Like my other friend, he's like a level 10, he's got no gear, but he's like, let's do

[01:05:47] a suicide mission. we go back and then take the tower. And it was just like, it was like a real slog of a battle, but we eventually get it done. And that wasn't even the main objective. That was just something we had to do to be able to progress further into that. That is so insane. And then all the while throughout the whole mission, we were under constant attack.

[01:07:00] And like, by the end of it, like we were. Like I feel like you, you know, with the bugs, you kind of put it good with the last time we were playing. Like the bugs are very like sporadic and you don't really know what they're going to do.

[01:08:20] You don't know when they're going to show up.

[01:08:22] Um, we even had that one mission that was like fucking impossible.

[01:08:25] The one where we couldn't see anything.

[01:09:29] damn hard at first. It is way different. It is true that people say that the robot levels are basically robot Vietnam because you drop down into those levels and it's just like,

[01:09:34] especially that jungle one. There's explosions going off everywhere and there's gunfire above

[01:09:41] your head. It's just insane. It's fantastic. He was only like level two or something. He didn't stand a chance. And it was just so funny, us screaming for this poor man or woman or whoever. And or robot or or robot. But it had not been a robot. I don't know, man, they were doing some pretty dumb shit. But hey, you know, maybe they're maybe they're scared

[01:11:01] because there was all there was all a lot of bugs coming for them.

[01:11:05] And they yeah, they didn't stand a chance.

[01:12:06] And so they had to add idle timers to kick people after 15 minutes. But you know what?

[01:12:08] I did see that on the Helldivers Twitter, they had posted that they were, I guess they

[01:12:16] were doing a stress test on the weekend.

[01:12:18] They increased the count today.

[01:12:20] Yeah.

[01:12:21] And I guess when we were playing on the weekend interesting is because of how not predatory it is, if there's actually something I robots have, I think it's literally oil. I think the robots literally have oil. And I think the bugs have some other kind of natural resource or something like that that we want. So like we're, it's very much like you play an indoctrinated.

[01:15:04] Okay.

[01:15:05] Yeah. Like the teacher.

[01:15:07] Sorry, go ahead. like in your face satire and yet people are still missing the message. So I just was curious if like, so you guys like are playing and can clearly like, or so it is like, it is satire. It is satire as hell. Like the tutorial. And the comparison is accurate.

[01:16:20] Yeah.

[01:16:21] Yeah.

[01:16:21] The tutorial level.

[01:16:22] It's so funny because the tutorial level, that Earth wants. So they're creating. Interesting. I was curious about that aspect of it. Because I mean, I guess, unfortunately don't have the deep well of knowledge to make like any intellectual, you know, smart sounding commentary or anything like that. But I think that there's something super fascinating about how two games came out within such a short period of time that are about

[01:20:02] it's doing incredibly well and

[01:20:05] it is also like kind of like a

[01:20:10] You know a commentary on society and

[01:20:16] Their structures, you know, whatever. So like I said, I do not have the words to properly

[01:20:21] Make up points or connect the two in a way, but like I just think that's

[01:21:40] Interesting. Yeah that he made and what he said was, I want to make a movie so painfully obvious and it's satire that everyone who understands it lives in perpetual psychological torment inflicted on them by people who don't. I love that. It's so good. I love that. That's amazing. That's why you should play Helldivers 2, Beth. You should get on Helldivers tonight.

[01:21:43] No.

[01:22:43] It says, warning, these turrets do not care

[01:22:46] if there is a Helldiver in the way of an enemy.

[01:22:47] I love it.

[01:22:48] Yeah.

[01:22:50] That's cute. That's cute.

[01:22:53] I think that, like, nothing anyone said about Helldivers

[01:22:55] is, like, maybe not want to play.

[01:22:55] It's just like...

[01:22:57] Perfect. And one day you will.

[01:22:59] One day I will. Once when the hype's gone.

[01:23:02] Oh, is that how it is?

[01:23:04] But I think... like Destiny 2 has taught them a lot of lessons. Because Destiny 2 is also Sony backed and there couldn't be more opposite games. Well, Destiny 2 was originally independent. Yes. But now it's... But back then it was fine.

[01:24:22] Actually, I thought it was really bad launch

[01:24:24] because it was the whole thing with like the colors

[01:24:26] for your weapons and you had to,

[01:24:27] if you bought spray paint for the weapon Beth, you're probably going to bed. Let's be real. Yeah, but folks, thanks for listening.
