[00:02:05] We talk about games that we grew up playing. So tell me about you. I know you do some music stuff. What's the music stuff that you do?

[00:02:14] Yeah, I run a little studio. I teach people how to play instruments. I play instruments and I do production work for basically anybody that wants to give me money to do that for them.

[00:02:32] But yeah, I've been doing this for a few years. I've been playing instruments for more than half my life at this point. So yeah, that's how I spend a good chunk of my time. That's what I do.

[00:02:45] That's pretty cool. What was the first instrument you learned how to play?

[00:02:50] If we skip recorder, the ungodly abomination of early elementary, I would say clarinet and school band because I wanted to play saxophone because I wanted to be like Lisa Simpson.

[00:03:04] I thought she's fucking cool. I don't know what cool is. I don't know what jazz is, but something about what she's got going on is like quote unquote cool.

[00:03:14] And so I wanted to play sax. A few years later, I got guitar and dropped out of band immediately. It was over. It was all guitar forever.

[00:03:22] How it goes. But hey, I know you have an affinity for the library and getting people signed up.

[00:03:28] Yes. I do.

[00:03:30] So it's very on brand and very Lisa Simpson of you to play the clarinet.

[00:03:37] Yeah, 100%. And I'm glad you said that for anyone listening. I don't know when the last time you've been to a public library is but my God, I can guarantee you if you haven't been any time recently they have much more to offer than you expect.

[00:05:28] Like, oh man, it's almost like more times than I can count because anytime anyone brings up anything book related.

[00:05:39] I'm usually like, Hey, do you have a card? You know, you know, I'm trying to find this audio book. I'll check on audible.

[00:05:46] It's like, well, wait, wait a minute. You have a card because like they have it. I promise you they have it for free.

[00:05:52] You don't have to give your money to Bezos. Like there are a lot of librarians right around the corner that would be so delighted if you would come check it out or even check it out digitally.

[00:06:03] They have so many digital resources folks in 2024. They have so many digital resources folks.

[00:06:10] You don't have to go just to get the card. You don't have to go.

[00:06:14] Jared is a big, a big proponent of the library. She loves it. She loves hoopla. She loves everything that she can get digital or audio.

[00:06:22] I still find it very, very fucking funny to be put on a waiting list for a digital book. It almost makes it feel like they're taking like the file and sending out the one file to people and then having them bring it back.

[00:08:59] It's a dumb one, but it's mine and I love it.

[00:09:03] It is specifically the Xbox port of the Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind.

[00:09:29] So I know that there's also like a sentimental story attached to that Elder Scrolls.

[00:10:01] surprisingly and bewilderingly purchased for me an Xbox and a copy of the Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind,

[00:10:12] which I then lived inside of for obscene amounts of time over the years to come.

[00:10:23] I had been introduced to it at a friend's home on PC right after it came out.

[00:10:28] I was obsessed with it and then this is about 2003-2004, I believe somewhere in there.

[00:10:34] And so then I have my own copy of it and I am ravenously consuming this dumb, dumb, dumb game.

[00:10:41] It's so, so good and so clunky.

[00:10:46] I got to it at just the right age where none of that mattered.

[00:10:51] All that mattered was that it was the first game that I had ever played where it was just a big space that you could just go around.

[00:10:59] Just go around, just go poke around, go do things, be curious.

[00:11:03] You know, there's no left to right.

[00:11:06] There's no forward to back chapter.

[00:11:09] It's just, you just poke around, just go in that person's house, see what's in their drawer.

[00:11:16] You know what I mean? So, you know, that curiosity, so, so, so much time spent inside of that game.

[00:11:23] I would have been 12 to 14 around that point.

[00:11:25] So definitely it's the earliest game I played, but a very formative game and probably my favorite game of all time against my will.

[00:11:32] I wish, I wish I had a better game as my favorite game of all time,

[00:11:37] but unfortunately that's the one that branded itself onto my brain.

[00:11:42] I mean, you could have a worse game.

[00:11:44] Like you can have like Bubsy 3D or something stupid like that.

[00:12:07] So like my first console, I think the first console that I really consciously remember as having was a Sega Genesis,

[00:12:18] Everything cool and edgy about the 90s.

[00:12:22] Yeah, Sega Genesis I played a bunch of and also watched my older brother play a bunch of as a youngling born.

[00:12:30] I'm almost the exact same age as you.

[00:12:37] So yeah, if you were around 12 to 14 and around 2004 then yeah,

[00:13:37] And I think I'm like 95% sure that the first game I ever played was Sonic 2.

[00:13:48] So that was very, very formative for me.

[00:13:52] Like I wanted to play video game server since then and I had no idea how to convey it.

[00:16:04] So I'm just recommending the library here.

[00:16:08] 2024 you have some meaning meaning flu and manageable way to play all of the games that have ever existed because they're all accessible to everyone forever

[00:16:24] And the rest is a you know tossed around another assorted various consoles

[00:16:57] So I have a beautiful 20 man a beautiful 24 inch day whoo

[00:17:02] CRT in my living room and a nice little 13 inch Orion

[00:17:05] That's just like in my bedroom under the cupboard waiting to be set up and used for something else

[00:17:16] Man because I was looking at them on ebay under like

[00:17:22] For a little crt tv dude my yeah, my 24 inch was 35 dollars. They had a 32 inch

[00:17:33] Thought that was what I was gonna get until I tried to lift it a man in decent shape

[00:17:57] So someday I'll get one and the thing is I work for a used to work for a

[00:18:04] A call center a reservation's call center for a major hotel chain in Orlando

[00:18:21] and behind the call center was

[00:18:26] Goodwill of sorts, but it was like ran by the people from the hotels

[00:18:31] So everything from the hotels that they wanted to get rid of they would just put it there for sale

[00:18:38] crt's out the ass like they had so many that they started lighting them outside of the

[00:18:44] Of the building and they would just get rained on and fucking ruin god damn

[00:18:48] That is not where I wanted that story to go

[00:23:00] And then a superman a 64 then a super nintendo and it goes from there, but yeah, that was like at daycare

[00:23:29] Depending on what kind of jams I'm wanting to listen to

[00:23:33] Very good games very fun games. You will never so that's the uh

[00:23:39] That's the motorcycle game where you beat each other up

[00:23:41] It is it is an ea sports franchise where you are riding on motorcycles

[00:23:47] It's it's from it's filmed from behind almost like a mode seven kind of thing real good

[00:23:53] Real good movement in the in the back. Oh, I guess foreground. It's not backgrounds

[00:23:57] It's like foregrounds

[00:23:58] And you race and you race all these other people with cool funny goofy names and uh, and you punch them and you kick them

[00:24:05] Kick is op by the way. Kick is real good

[00:24:09] And you have to avoid cops and random animals

[00:24:13] Across the street other pedestrians, but some of your opponents will have chains or billy clubs

[00:24:21] And they'll swing them at you and if they swing match you and you punch them at the right time

[00:24:24] You'll grab that chain and you'll whip them right back and it's yours now. It's your chain king

[00:24:30] And so you get to and you get to keep the chain between races or the billy club

[00:24:34] And so you're just kicking and swinging chain. Uh, it's it's uh, yeah, it's like, uh, it's very sega

[00:24:40] It's like mad max run. It's like very sega. It's super goofy super dumb. You can use an antelope as a ramp

[00:24:49] It's just so it's real good that you gotta play it. It's so much fun

[00:24:58] I I've seen I think videos of it on like random youtube videos and shit in it

[00:25:03] It kind of reminds me of there was this game for the super nintendo

[00:25:07] It was like a task mania game

[00:25:10] Where you're running the entire time. Yes

[00:25:13] And you got to avoid like vehicles and shit and and the goal is to eat like the key weavers that he was always chasing in the cartoon

[00:25:22] Motorcycles would change and shit. Yeah, it's almost like a forward motion frocker that task game

[00:25:30] Forward motion because you're not like above and trying to go to the side

[00:25:35] You're just trying to avoid everything in forward motion

[00:25:38] Um, yeah, road rush is real good. It gets you'll never see the end of it

[00:25:42] It gets real hard. Uh, it just kind of keeps every new

[00:25:46] Round just makes the races longer

[00:25:48] And adds more obstacles and it'll just keep it gives like four to six rounds of that uh with like seven races per round

[00:25:56] Um, it's real good fun to come back to just fun to come pick up and play and just goof around with

[00:26:02] You know, there's some bike upgrade mechanics, but it's kind of whatever. I just you know

[00:26:05] It's not super complicated. Uh, but those are very very good genesis games for sure

[00:26:10] So three is the best one? Yeah, I think uh, I think they're both pretty darn good. I think it's just about um

[00:26:18] What kind of jams i'm wanting to hear on any given day between two and three

[00:26:22] A little bit different in the jams department pretty similar, but you know, you get some you get some signature tracks you're looking for

[00:57:19] The switch the switch runs metroid primary mastered a remastered version of a game that on game cube on the native hardware looks

[00:57:32] They've just like they're just sitting on maybe the best generation of games

[00:57:41] And doing nothing with them

[00:57:43] Including a sweet sweet beloved f zero g x

[00:58:33] badass sand worms shooting through the sky

[00:58:37] It doesn't get better than f zero

[00:58:39] And and also specifically that one because it is just loaded with all of the great sega

[00:58:48] Ladder half generation sega so so great. Just goofy goofy dumbness very very good game

[00:58:56] That I bought that game at a blockbuster for 20 bucks and they had

[00:59:17] In my whole life, I've only ever been good at f zero. That's the only thing i've been fucking put here for

[00:59:57] F zero boots up not even when I'm racing the moment it boots up

[01:00:01] I every muscle relaxes. I just become a liquid man. It's incredible. It's a very very good game

[01:00:17] And I I think nintendo now is like figuring out that we want

[01:00:22] By all of these gamecube games and they also want people to stop selling them online for an exorbitant amount of money

[01:00:28] That would be like slowly releasing them because you see they did pigment one and two on switch

[01:00:33] They're doing thousand year door. Uh, they did uh, mario sunshine

[01:00:38] Uh, oh, yeah. Yeah metroid prime

[01:01:08] So just give us rogu rogu squadron because infinite ports they do they do some really solid jobs too

[01:01:15] Uh, and it's tough because I love emulation but factor five games

[01:01:22] rogue squadron, uh

[01:01:26] Rebels strike rebel leader rebel. Yeah, there's like striking leader rogu squadron three all three of the rogue squadron games are

[01:01:35] Very challenging to play in emulation

[01:01:37] Even if you have highly capable hardware because factor five has always done some really really kooky advanced things

[01:01:44] Which is why those games also still look very good today on their own

[01:01:49] uh, which honest to god

[01:01:52] The ability to play rogue squadron and rogue squad uh rogue squadron two

[01:01:57] One of the reasons why I bought the we to mod it because internally the we is

[01:02:03] Native hardware and let me tell you it runs those games like butter. It's so goddamn good. I love it

[01:02:10] It plays them so easily. I struggled with those in emulation for so long

[01:02:15] But on native hardware, uh, even just the actual roms themselves obtained

[01:02:21] Legally through the open source library the internet archive

[01:02:27] They they run magnificently well on the original hardware of the of the week. Yeah great games very very fun

[01:02:34] Yeah, yeah, I I beat rogue squadron last year and immediately jumped in through rogue squadron two

[01:02:41] And I couldn't watch any of the cutscenes because they would not fucking run on this steam deck

[01:02:46] Oh, yeah, but the games the gameplay would but the cutscenes wouldn't so I had no context for the story

[01:02:52] So I just dropped it. Yeah, and that's far. I'm waiting on aspire. Yeah. Yeah

[01:02:57] Yeah, that's farther than I ever got any of them to run in emulation

[01:03:00] Uh to actually get the gameplay to like function
