[00:00:00] Have you experienced the awesome power of the Panasonic Real 3DO System?
[00:00:05] Obviously.
[00:00:06] Presenting 3DO, the most advanced home gaming system in the universe
[00:00:13] It's time to prove your torrentness.
[00:00:17] 3DO, Panasonic, whole-star and creative lands,
[00:00:21] and new old face and three blinds and syngraphics of Panasonic Real 3DO.
[00:00:27] 3DO.
[00:00:31] Hello everybody and welcome back to the 3DO Experience,
[00:00:42] the 3DO retrospective podcast where we talk about all things
[00:00:45] 3DO, the company, the console and everything in between.
[00:00:48] I'm Bill and this is Thrak. How are you doing Thrak?
[00:00:50] Oh, I'm doing alright. How are you?
[00:00:53] Oh, you know, I've been better.
[00:00:55] Got Heath Brahms and got to go for surgery pretty soon,
[00:00:59] but you know, how have been that? Things are fine.
[00:01:02] So you don't have a date for the appointment yet?
[00:01:05] Nothing confirmed.
[00:01:06] Basically, though, that the my dentist told me was,
[00:01:10] here's the place.
[00:01:12] They're probably going to schedule you far out.
[00:01:14] Basically, just past or them every day until an opening comes in.
[00:01:17] So.
[00:01:18] So you've already been to the dentist to be like,
[00:01:20] oh, you need to get this done kind of thing?
[00:01:22] Yeah, they went to check and see what the problem was
[00:01:24] and it was there.
[00:01:25] Wisdom tooth coming in. There's a big cavity
[00:01:28] and it's been she and nerve.
[00:01:30] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:01:32] Yeah, I remember when I got my wisdom teeth removed
[00:01:35] about a good few years ago.
[00:01:37] And I was out for from work for a few days just to
[00:01:42] rest up and recover.
[00:01:44] And really how that happened.
[00:01:48] I think the whole thing was,
[00:01:50] yeah, like I got it.
[00:01:52] Yeah, I got to point more with the dentist
[00:01:54] and then from there they gave me a
[00:01:57] little bit of a lot of stuff.
[00:02:00] And then I got to get it done.
[00:02:05] It was like three different places that would actually do the surgery.
[00:02:10] And so, you know, I called them to see what dates were best
[00:02:14] and this was some time in the summer and one of them were like,
[00:02:18] couldn't get me into September or whatever.
[00:02:20] But then one was like, oh, we'll get you in like eight weeks or something like that.
[00:02:24] So I was like, yeah, I'll do that.
[00:02:25] And then I was like, yeah, I'm going to be blood.
[00:02:28] You know, yeah, though I will say go for the general aesthetic aesthetic or
[00:02:33] if I can't figure it out.
[00:02:35] The general anesthetic.
[00:02:37] There it is.
[00:02:39] Yeah, just go for that if they ask just just not yourself out.
[00:02:43] Fuck it, right?
[00:02:44] Yeah, I don't really want to be a weak sports.
[00:02:47] So I was like weirdly like half awake.
[00:02:51] You know, where if I like I was in like a weird, like kind of dream state
[00:02:54] and I could feel them messing around in my mouth.
[00:02:58] Like, like there was no pain or anything but I could just tell they were
[00:03:02] things in their doing shit, you know.
[00:03:04] But it was a kind of weirdly in and out.
[00:03:06] And I'm like, I'm not moving.
[00:03:07] I don't know if I don't fucking care.
[00:03:09] You know, and then, and then they then they wield me into my mom's car.
[00:03:14] Now we drove their drove home.
[00:03:16] And I threw up as soon as we got there because I just was naturally swallowing.
[00:03:22] And I had a lot of that gooey blood and it all was just going down.
[00:03:26] So I just brought it all back up.
[00:03:28] Then I went and took a nap.
[00:03:30] So a very disgusting start to the episode as you can tell, you know,
[00:03:33] it wasn't even all that.
[00:03:35] So I hope you like apple sauce, noodles, mashed potatoes, all the soft foods.
[00:03:42] No chewing allowed.
[00:03:43] Yeah.
[00:03:46] Um, well, we'll get there when we get there.
[00:03:49] Yeah, but I will say, I don't know if they told you this,
[00:03:52] but they told me that, you know, when you're in your like 20s or whatever
[00:03:56] and you do the surgery, you'll be out for maybe two to three days,
[00:04:00] maybe four days.
[00:04:01] And that's, and then you'll be fine right after that.
[00:04:03] So you bounce back a lot quicker.
[00:04:05] When weirdly enough if it's somebody, like saying their 50s,
[00:04:08] it puts them out for a while.
[00:04:10] Um, which I'm not 100% sure why,
[00:04:13] but I'm not the expert.
[00:04:15] So don't ask me.
[00:04:17] Yeah.
[00:04:19] Oh, well, I'll be looking, not looking forward to that, but
[00:04:23] you know.
[00:04:25] Oh yeah, for sure.
[00:04:26] I wouldn't be surprised if, you know, we,
[00:04:29] we delay this show for a week while you recover.
[00:04:32] Yeah, well, it depends when it times out.
[00:04:35] Yeah.
[00:04:36] One of my shows will probably get delayed.
[00:04:38] Yeah.
[00:04:39] And that's fine.
[00:04:40] Yeah.
[00:04:41] Um, speaking of stuff though,
[00:04:46] our friend, uh, mutual friend Chris over at Melville,
[00:04:48] console,
[00:04:49] got me aware of a certain game that I just had to buy.
[00:04:53] He literally added you and I was thinking why.
[00:04:58] And then if you look at, if you look in the corner,
[00:05:01] everybody, you'll see why.
[00:05:03] Yep.
[00:05:05] It's a 3DO host console game.
[00:05:08] And the second I saw that, I'm like,
[00:05:10] how much is this?
[00:05:11] I looked online.
[00:05:12] It was like five bucks.
[00:05:13] Yeah.
[00:05:14] Yeah.
[00:05:15] And our good and our good buddy Burger champ actually had
[00:05:18] some of the say about it because of course he does.
[00:05:21] Um, I think he said it was all right.
[00:05:24] Yeah.
[00:05:25] Apparently it's like a half decent puzzle game.
[00:05:26] 3DO didn't actually make it so that's probably why.
[00:05:29] Um,
[00:05:30] he just published it.
[00:05:32] Sounds about right.
[00:05:34] I mean, it looks fine.
[00:05:36] You know, one of these days will,
[00:05:38] we'll review it.
[00:05:39] I'll have to fuck.
[00:05:42] I'll emulate it.
[00:05:43] But if it's PS2 game,
[00:05:45] I got to emulate it on my series X,
[00:05:47] which probably means I have to reach behind the mess of
[00:05:50] wires pull out the hard drive and then plug it in
[00:05:53] to add the ROM, not that that's difficult.
[00:05:56] I'll do that.
[00:05:57] One of these days, I'll do that.
[00:06:00] Yeah.
[00:06:01] So there's that.
[00:06:02] I also went on kind of a,
[00:06:03] a spree of like ordering as many post,
[00:06:06] a,
[00:06:07] a console 3DO games I could find.
[00:06:10] There's actually quite a few,
[00:06:11] there's quite a few,
[00:06:12] but there's not as much as I thought there was.
[00:06:14] So.
[00:06:15] Yeah.
[00:06:16] I've been crazy with the ordering of OG Xbox games.
[00:06:20] Um,
[00:06:21] according to,
[00:06:22] I think it was game.
[00:06:23] I threw all the games on there.
[00:06:24] I've like 63 now.
[00:06:26] So that's how I mentioned.
[00:06:28] I finished his apper and I'm almost done with my next game,
[00:06:32] which was not brothers and arms.
[00:06:34] I chose this instead.
[00:06:35] Spartan total warrior.
[00:06:37] Oh, cool.
[00:06:38] This is a really cool game.
[00:06:39] It's in the, well,
[00:06:40] I didn't say on there.
[00:06:41] It says back here.
[00:06:42] It's in the total war.
[00:06:43] Um, series of strategy games that create a assembly or known for.
[00:06:47] Yeah.
[00:06:48] This is maybe,
[00:06:49] that was a good one.
[00:06:50] Um,
[00:06:51] but then they were like,
[00:06:52] oh, we want to make a total war game for console.
[00:06:54] And they're like, well,
[00:06:55] we can't really do it because they're known for like,
[00:06:57] thousands of characters on screen and all that.
[00:07:00] So they trimmed it down to just a more like a linear action game,
[00:07:04] where you're just controlling this guy.
[00:07:07] Um,
[00:07:08] but in battles of like dozens or even hundreds of enemies.
[00:07:11] So which with the downscale you still get the like the epic big battle feel.
[00:07:16] Um,
[00:07:18] because you're just controlling one person and it's a fairly short game.
[00:07:21] Um,
[00:07:22] there's three acts.
[00:07:23] I'm already like halfway through the third one.
[00:07:25] So I'll probably have this done maybe to get your two.
[00:07:28] Because then I was reminded shit that in a super pod network discord,
[00:07:35] which we are now,
[00:07:36] we're part of the super pod network.
[00:07:38] The game for this month's game club is Sonic of six.
[00:07:43] That's fun.
[00:07:45] So when I finish that,
[00:07:47] I gotta get on it.
[00:07:49] So I will.
[00:07:50] I'll try to get as I want to try to get all the achievements.
[00:07:54] I don't know if I'm going to ask rank every stage.
[00:07:56] No, I'll tell you hand some of those are not worth it.
[00:08:00] Yeah.
[00:08:01] I'll do what I can.
[00:08:02] So if I think in think of any glitches all of you know,
[00:08:05] because there's some fun.
[00:08:07] Yeah.
[00:08:09] So um,
[00:08:10] and if anyone will be curious to my eventual review for that.
[00:08:13] If you go to the super pod network website,
[00:08:16] is it just your pod network.com?
[00:08:18] Yes.
[00:08:19] Okay.
[00:08:20] If you go there,
[00:08:21] I will be writing a review for it.
[00:08:24] So in fact,
[00:08:25] you can go there and read my review of Lost Planet,
[00:08:28] which was the game for April.
[00:08:31] We were supposed to do cameo from May,
[00:08:33] but I think none of us really.
[00:08:35] Some of us tried to play it and didn't care for it.
[00:08:38] So that one kind of,
[00:08:41] that one ended up not working out.
[00:08:43] So,
[00:08:44] but this is a big one.
[00:08:45] So I think we're all going to do it.
[00:08:47] At least I know I'm going to do it.
[00:08:49] I'm curious how many people say they're going to do it
[00:08:51] and get to like crisis city and say fuck this and just quit.
[00:08:55] What you know me with Sonic,
[00:08:57] I can't quit.
[00:08:59] I mean, I can't quit it.
[00:09:01] I've been no six about seven times for some reason.
[00:09:05] And I beat it.
[00:09:06] I beat it once a long time ago,
[00:09:08] but I beat it.
[00:09:09] I beat the PS3 version.
[00:09:11] I beat the PS3 like four times in the 360,
[00:09:14] like an additional three.
[00:09:16] It plays so much better on 360.
[00:09:18] It's not even funny.
[00:09:19] Yes, so that'll be an improvement right away.
[00:09:22] But what's funny about that game is people don't realize
[00:09:25] just how long it is.
[00:09:28] It's a pretty long 20 hours.
[00:09:31] Yeah, first on the game.
[00:09:33] First on the game that is a lot.
[00:09:34] Yeah.
[00:09:36] Silver's story alone.
[00:09:38] Silver and Shadow story are both massive slugs.
[00:09:42] And I hate silver so fucking terrible.
[00:09:46] You know what's really funny?
[00:09:48] I still say this to this day.
[00:09:50] They could have made silver work.
[00:09:52] There's a way I know this because I played Psycho not.
[00:09:55] I think it's like this could have worked so well.
[00:09:57] If they just.
[00:09:58] Oh, if they did treat them like a Psycho North character.
[00:10:01] Yeah, like they had them play like that style.
[00:10:05] Oh, I haven't played Psycho not so I cannot say.
[00:10:09] One of these days I got to play one into.
[00:10:12] But okay.
[00:10:14] That probably, I mean anything would work.
[00:10:17] Compared to what they did.
[00:10:19] Yeah, where you have.
[00:10:21] You could hover way longer than you're supposed to by spamming the X button.
[00:10:24] Because the meter's not programmed right.
[00:10:27] And he can't run fast and his most powerful movies is like Sonic Bitch slap that he just gives that free funny.
[00:10:36] Yeah.
[00:10:38] Oh, my goodness.
[00:10:39] Oh, well, let's stay tuned for that in the future.
[00:10:43] So probably next week I'll give you all an update on my O6 playthrough.
[00:10:47] Yeah, maybe I'll play that again.
[00:10:50] Maybe I'll actually contribute.
[00:10:52] Yeah, because I don't have time.
[00:10:54] But we make the time.
[00:10:57] Yeah.
[00:10:59] Well, I mean, the my copy of a paper Mario finally came in.
[00:11:03] So I really got to play that next.
[00:11:05] Yeah, I got to get on that eventually.
[00:11:07] I still haven't bought it yet.
[00:11:08] I've just, you know, it's been busy over here.
[00:11:11] Did I tell you that my copy came from the middle east?
[00:11:16] Yeah, yeah, you mentioned that.
[00:11:18] And for some reason buddy might have worked he ordered it.
[00:11:22] And it says delivered and then he looked in his mailbox.
[00:11:25] It wasn't there. He asked his neighbors. They didn't have it.
[00:11:28] So he's he has filed a claim, which is the worst thing to do with the post service because it doesn't help at all.
[00:11:36] Oh, he didn't do Amazon.
[00:11:38] I think he did through Amazon, but our wherever he ordered it was originally UPS.
[00:11:44] And then it transferred to USPS or some reason.
[00:11:47] Okay, yeah, he's going to have a hard time.
[00:11:49] If it's directly, if it's a direct Amazon thing, you can just bully the fuck out of Amazon and they will eventually just give in to make you go away.
[00:11:57] Yeah, we'll just give you another copy probably.
[00:12:00] Yeah.
[00:12:03] Well, we'll see.
[00:12:05] We'll see.
[00:12:06] But the funniest part about the middle eastern copy though is the only difference is the case doesn't have a reading on it.
[00:12:12] But when you open it up, it's a US copy. It's like the weirdest thing.
[00:12:16] That is very weird.
[00:12:19] I was just worried it was a bootleg for a minute.
[00:12:21] And I was like, did I get bamboo's little?
[00:12:23] Well, it was a good looking bootleg then.
[00:12:25] Yeah, I was just having no rating on it confused me.
[00:12:29] I was like, that is bizarre.
[00:12:31] Yeah, I think my copy of looking over.
[00:12:35] I think it's I think it's fatal frame made into the black water and the Kloenoa fantasy
[00:12:42] Revery series. I ordered through. I think it was play Asia.
[00:12:45] So they're like the Hong Kong copy.
[00:12:47] So they're in full English and like it's basically an NTSC copy, but with no rating on it.
[00:12:52] Yeah, that's a weird thing that they get now, but yeah.
[00:12:56] But if you put a fairs download codes in them, you can't use them.
[00:13:01] Yep, because games are no longer region lock, but content still is.
[00:13:06] Which doesn't make any sense to me.
[00:13:09] Yeah, they want to get there cut somehow. I guess.
[00:13:13] Anyway, so slam a gym basketballs.
[00:13:22] We're talking about shootin hoops.
[00:13:26] How about cookies on them?
[00:13:28] So it's a free face before we get into this.
[00:13:30] I know like little to nothing about basketball.
[00:13:33] The most I know about basketball is Michael Jordan is considered the goat and he owns a mask on it.
[00:13:40] He's a pencil and he you ask.
[00:13:42] Well, that's say like could be LeBron true.
[00:13:46] I think Larry Birds is strong contender.
[00:13:50] Probably cream or will chamberlin especially in their days.
[00:13:54] You know.
[00:13:56] Yeah, I do not watch the NBA.
[00:13:59] My parents are at vid college basketball watchers.
[00:14:03] So, you know, I know a teeny bits.
[00:14:06] I was hoping the timber wolves because I like the Minnesota Vikings.
[00:14:10] I like all the Minnesota teams.
[00:14:12] Timber wolves, you know, they made it to the conference championship and lost in game four.
[00:14:16] So the NBA finals are Thursday the sixth when they start and it's the Mavericks versus the Celtics.
[00:14:25] So you could ask our good buddy Dre.
[00:14:28] I think Dre Rush watches basketball.
[00:14:30] So you can ask him his thoughts.
[00:14:33] Yeah, we're not big on the we know of it.
[00:14:37] And it's you know, it's one of the better sports to watch for sure.
[00:14:42] But it's just watching sports is a lot especially if you're like me.
[00:14:48] We're used to like, oh, like football.
[00:14:50] I don't have to worry about one game a week and then with all these other sports,
[00:14:54] it's like, oh, should they play like every fucking day?
[00:14:57] Got damn it.
[00:14:58] Yeah, I can't do this man.
[00:15:00] At least with my setup, I can't really do that.
[00:15:04] So otherwise, I'd probably start watching hockey more regularly, but that's another story for another day.
[00:15:09] So yeah, slam and jam 95.
[00:15:12] Apparently this is like kind of a series.
[00:15:16] A series of two games.
[00:15:19] Yeah, but sort of.
[00:15:22] But you could argue this evolved into a different series.
[00:15:26] Yeah, so I actually wanted to start there by talking about the creators of this game.
[00:15:31] Because despite the crystal dynamics logo being on there, they simply published this.
[00:15:37] The actual creator of this game was a company called left field productions.
[00:15:43] And they have quite the pedigree behind.
[00:15:47] Is it interesting to me?
[00:15:51] It's interesting they're called left field productions.
[00:15:55] There, I would say mostly known for sports games.
[00:15:58] But they've done a couple of other things.
[00:16:00] And yet they never made a baseball game.
[00:16:04] No, and ironically, they're most critically acclaimed game is a dirt bike game.
[00:16:08] Yes, because yeah, left field productions started out making slam and jam 95.
[00:16:14] And then slam and jam 96.
[00:16:17] Then they got partially.
[00:16:20] Nintendo bought a portion of the company and they became an Nintendo.
[00:16:23] Second party studio for a while there.
[00:16:26] And they exclusively made Nintendo games and the slam and jam series kind of evolved into Kobe Bryant NBA court side,
[00:16:35] which then just kind of became NBA court side.
[00:16:38] Yes, the NBA court side trilogy.
[00:16:42] Like there's only three of them.
[00:16:44] There was two on the 64.
[00:16:46] And then there's one on GameCube.
[00:16:49] But I actually back in my GameCube collecting days.
[00:16:51] I had a copy of this one.
[00:16:53] And I remember playing it a little bit and thinking it wasn't bad.
[00:16:58] Not a bad bass basketball game by any stretch, but when it comes to basketball games,
[00:17:04] I guess for me the only ones I have any sort of history with are NBA jam,
[00:17:11] which I think a lot of us are from the NBA jam.
[00:17:15] And then also the NBA street games.
[00:17:18] Particularly the first NBA street is probably the one I played the most.
[00:17:23] I think volume two is considered the best one, like by far.
[00:17:26] And what I played of it is very good.
[00:17:28] But I had volume one and that's the one I played all the time.
[00:17:31] And then volume three, the GameCube version you could play as Mario,
[00:17:35] which is funny seeing like Mario roughly the size of these like basketball games,
[00:17:40] which is dunking on them, which is awesome.
[00:17:44] Yeah, yeah. Did you ever play the NBA court side series?
[00:17:47] I did play that one. I did play NBA street though because I remember playing as Mario in the Legion Peach.
[00:17:53] I did speak of Mario in basketball.
[00:17:56] I played one of the most obscure Mario sports games, which was Mario who was 3 on 3 on 3 on DS.
[00:18:03] Oh yes, yes.
[00:18:04] I've never played it, but I do know this game.
[00:18:08] It randomly had Dragon Quest characters and it was kind of funny because square made it a vlog.
[00:18:12] Yes, square making a basketball game.
[00:18:15] I mean to be fair they made like 3D rolled runner.
[00:18:18] They made rad racer.
[00:18:20] So they've made some out there shit for them.
[00:18:23] But yeah, left field productions outside of that.
[00:18:26] Yeah, they did like a beauty in the beast game on Game Boy Color.
[00:18:30] They did game.
[00:18:32] Oh, they did it a couple.
[00:18:33] Yeah, that little mermaid.
[00:18:35] For some reason, they did backered football on the GameCube.
[00:18:40] Which I didn't think was exclusive to GameCube, but I guess so.
[00:18:45] But they did the world series of poker that one Xbox game.
[00:18:52] I see everywhere that is for the low price of like police just take it and I refuse to buy it.
[00:18:57] Yeah, so I don't want to buy a fucking poker game around 2003.
[00:19:01] They actually bought back their stake from Nintendo so they became fully independent again.
[00:19:08] And what's funny is they're most critically acclaimed game at that point was excite bite six excite.
[00:19:14] Excite bite 64.
[00:19:17] I don't know why that was so hard to say, but anyway.
[00:19:19] Yeah, the fantastic excite bite 64 which is fully open the world's area that is still impressive even to this day.
[00:19:28] Yeah, like I think of all the.
[00:19:32] It's this is like debatably the best like an Nintendo made sports game.
[00:19:39] If you want to throw excite bite into that term because you know they're not known for a lot of sports games but I'd say like outside of say the Mario ones,
[00:19:47] like this is one of their better ones like I've never been big on 1080.
[00:19:51] Like I think 1080's fine, but I don't know it sounds good as like SSX, you know, or what's the, what's the wave race?
[00:19:59] I'm not a big wave race guy.
[00:20:01] But excite bite 64 is really fucking good and and you get the original excite bite tracks in 3D which is cool.
[00:20:09] I think the track builders brought back in as well.
[00:20:12] Yeah, I would say it's my favorite excite series game but I actually prefer excite bots on Wii.
[00:20:20] I don't know when they're members of that game.
[00:20:22] I thought excite trucks was great.
[00:20:24] Excite truck was good to excite bots was basically excite truck just you had a bit more options.
[00:20:30] Yeah, yeah, the excite series is a very like small series that they've, you know, done a handful of games here and there.
[00:20:36] Honestly, I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't made one for Switchy app.
[00:20:40] Yeah, honestly.
[00:20:42] And what's really funny to me though is that game was so well received for them that they literally gave up basketball games entirely.
[00:20:51] And pretty much for the rest of their career they just made poker and motorcycle games.
[00:20:56] Yeah, except for court side O2 because excite bite 64 came out in 2000.
[00:21:03] Yeah, that was their last game but that was also the last game under their Nintendo contract.
[00:21:07] That is true, yeah.
[00:21:08] Like when it was called NBA courts I 2002 it felt like the idea was they wanted them just to have a yearly basketball game.
[00:21:16] You know, like maybe they were looking at what Sega was doing with the Sega supports stuff like NBA,
[00:21:21] NBA, which has become like the big thing in basketball, the NBA 2K series.
[00:21:25] You know what I wondered on it that but they didn't get it.
[00:21:29] You know what I wonder?
[00:21:30] What's that?
[00:21:31] 2002 that's right around so like 2005 was the big like EA freak out.
[00:21:38] I wonder if I wonder if one of the companies bought the exclusive rights?
[00:21:44] Not for NBA.
[00:21:46] Didn't 2K end up buying the right stand be a?
[00:21:50] I don't think so.
[00:21:51] I could be wrong on that.
[00:21:53] Let me check.
[00:21:54] I know 2K has made the basketball games pretty much exclusively for years now.
[00:22:00] Well, it could have been a case of like um like MLB the show where like they don't have the exclusive rights.
[00:22:08] They're just the last like company that still makes basketball game or baseball games in this case.
[00:22:15] It was just like the competition just kind of withered away.
[00:22:18] So they were the one left standing kind of thing.
[00:22:21] With NBA, I honestly don't know it says let's see EA was making the NBA live series until like 2018.
[00:22:29] So as far as I know they've never they don't have exclusive rights to it.
[00:22:34] Like EA only ever bought the exclusive NFL rights for man.
[00:22:37] And NASCAR, they bought the exclusive NASCAR rights for some reason.
[00:22:41] Okay, but they don't have this anymore.
[00:22:43] No, they dropped them after 2009.
[00:22:45] Yeah, yeah, and NBA stop making NBA live games with NBA live 19 which my guess is because people just kind of don't care because people for vastly prefer the NBA to K games over it as far as I know.
[00:23:00] Yeah, even though the NBA 2K series like all sports games that have been yearly forever and are now existing now or just like a shit show basically.
[00:23:10] Like all of them basically or shit shows full of microtransactions and all the stuff like predatory business practice, but because it's like the only one there people still buy them anyways because of the name recognition.
[00:23:21] It's the same with Madden. I imagine NBA 2K is probably the same.
[00:23:25] You know, there's just no competition in sports games anymore, which is just really fucking tragic because if he go back to say the original slam in jam in 95 there was all kinds of sports games basketball games.
[00:23:38] You know, there was your NBA jams which became like hang time and everything. There was I think double dribble was a series for a little bit.
[00:23:47] There was like Jordan versus Bird which is not a good game, but you know there there was there was more out there to choose from like I know in like the football realm because that's what I know more like there there wasn't just Madden forever.
[00:24:01] There was always a lot of competition especially like the early PS2 Xbox days. There was like you had NFL game day NFL fever NFL 2K NFL blitz, fucking NFL quarterback club, you know just all these different series making stuff and it kept.
[00:24:20] The genre fresh because they all were doing something slightly it was all mostly sim football, but they were all doing something slightly different. I imagine with the basketball stuff it was kind of the same.
[00:24:31] I mean you had your NBA jam which was more arcadey, but I feel like it tried to go more sim when it went to like hang time and like court side and everything. I felt like they were trying to make them more of sim games this one I would say is a sim.
[00:24:45] It's definitely trying to be more of a sim anyways.
[00:24:48] As sim as a 1995 3D of basketball game can be I think.
[00:24:54] Yeah it was interesting I will say like.
[00:25:02] So it's I'm not gonna lie, I am awful at basketball games in general, but I don't want to I don't want to.
[00:25:10] I don't want to.
[00:25:11] Aren't I the game for that? Because I think that's not really the games fall, I think it's more just.
[00:25:16] I mean that I think this is a very solid game.
[00:25:22] And looking The Little Bit I know of say basketball games around this era, this isn't my first pick, maybe but I wouldn't say it's my last pick either.
[00:25:33] You know I'd say it's somewhere up there I think it's it's very will made graphically I like how it is.
[00:25:39] the aesthetics of it are very nice like it's up there with a
[00:25:43] Madden on 3DO and my opinion were they both really good even today?
[00:25:47] I think this looks better though because this has like actual like hand-drawn
[00:25:51] sprites instead of like the Wii U V stuff and it has commentary.
[00:25:56] A commentary is surprisingly like good you know like it's dynamic enough to where
[00:26:03] you don't notice repeating lines so much which I thought was very surprising.
[00:26:08] You know like the like the scoring system is like the like the the score UI I guess or whatever
[00:26:15] that they have like the the interlay for the screen looks really nice and clean.
[00:26:19] You have a pretty good stats in between each of the quarters and track of stuff
[00:26:24] and that goes over saying till like the season or like the franchise mode if you wanted to do that.
[00:26:29] It's very very well done and it's trying I think to go more in the simulation route because
[00:26:36] I think NBA Jam was still like the hot shit at the time and that was purely arcade.
[00:26:42] NBA Jam was just super nuts like yeah he's on fire.
[00:26:47] Yeah you can play as Bill and Hillary.
[00:26:50] That's true.
[00:26:52] And I can play NBA Jam like I can play and win a couple games of NBA Jam because
[00:26:59] there's only like it's basically two on two so it's much easier to keep track of everything
[00:27:05] and like with just the side view of the court I think it's easier to keep track of where you are
[00:27:11] because with slam and jam if you guys can see behind me occasionally they do it's like
[00:27:16] you're like vertically like with the players you know where the cameras place and that is a strange
[00:27:23] choice for the camera I don't think it's a bad choice but I think it's too far low.
[00:27:28] You know because I think some of the NBA 2K games have this similar perspective but they go
[00:27:33] more for the bird's eye view so like nothing gets in the way you know.
[00:27:37] Yeah it was trying to feel more realistic in a sense but I think we were still a little too early
[00:27:44] in gaming that it just wasn't quite they didn't really know exactly where to position the
[00:27:49] camera. No I left because every time in the background there you're when it goes to the little
[00:27:56] FMV cutscene the first shot it shows as a bunch of cheerleader shaking their asses every time.
[00:28:01] I mean what's wrong with it? It's so 90s but it just makes me laugh. Yeah yeah yeah this game is
[00:28:08] very 90s aesthetic. I feel like basketball is probably the most trendy sport when it comes to
[00:28:14] aesthetics you know what I mean? I think you could watch any random NBA game from say like a
[00:28:20] specific year and you get a snapshot of what that year is like as far as what people are into
[00:28:27] like the style of the time that kind of thing. I think I read somewhere like someone was joking about
[00:28:32] like what the most like comedy like entertaining sport is and someone said basketball has to be
[00:28:37] the funniest sport ever. I mean it can be. It's just if you watch like the globe trodders.
[00:28:43] Yeah like stuff like that but it's funny because they're kind of supposed to be a joke but like
[00:28:48] you see stuff like that like all the in reality sometimes too. Oh yeah like there's a crazy
[00:28:53] shit that happens at basketball. You know like it's one of those sports that I never liked to play
[00:28:58] but I was always kind of entertaining to watch just because some of the goons that could happen during
[00:29:03] game. Yeah yeah if you want to watch something that's like surprisingly really entertaining
[00:29:08] I recommend Japanese baseball. That shit is wild. You know like like they take the game very
[00:29:18] very seriously like more seriously than they probably should but like the like they always pack
[00:29:24] out the stadiums and the crowds are just fucking ravaged for it. And then like you'll have like
[00:29:29] managers make like entrances on like giant drones and shit. It is like what the fuck? And then you watch
[00:29:35] like the actual sport is fascinating just because it feels different than what we're used to
[00:29:41] it's a majorly baseball. Oh yeah no so it's definitely worth watching if you guys get or curious about it.
[00:29:47] I could see the the comedy in basketball I think it's just just something about the idea of it
[00:29:53] and that like you know like like black culture really latched on the basketball and it's like been
[00:29:59] sort of I guess the defining sport for them for a very very long time. I'm sure there's like a really
[00:30:07] good like book or documentary about why these two latch together because you know basketball was
[00:30:12] invented by a white Canadian in the 1800s so how it got latched I honestly I do not know but I'm sure
[00:30:19] it's a fascinating story. It's not not a stereotype but you know I mean I get it I mean you look at the
[00:30:31] a majority of the players in the NBA are black and have been in their real time and they're really
[00:30:39] good at it like fantastic outing yeah like I mean you think of some of the most famous basketball
[00:30:43] players I mean like Michael Jordan shack LeBron Kobe Kobe like yeah I mean you could say Larry
[00:30:51] Bird but he was I mean even they were like he's an outwire you know as like yeah but also he was
[00:30:58] lucky incredible if you guys have never seen Larry Bird highlights go look them up they are
[00:31:03] fucking impressive. Yeah it's definitely like one of like I mean I like one of the biggest
[00:31:10] called classic awful films that everyone loves is fucking space jam so that is true
[00:31:17] it's weird to think of that movie as a co-classic when it was such a big budget production at the
[00:31:21] time it was such this meant to be this shit meant to be this like huge event right and now it's just
[00:31:28] come down to like a weird internet meme yeah to the point where I got a sequel that was worse.
[00:31:34] I've never seen space jam too so I can't comment on it but yeah the first space jam is
[00:31:42] I don't know man like as a kid I enjoyed the spectacle of it I guess you know like seeing the
[00:31:48] lunitons there if I was cool. Michael Jordan tried harder than LeBron did that's for sure.
[00:31:53] And Michael Jordan cannot act like I don't know if he's a better actor or baseball player I can't
[00:32:00] answer that question. I mean he's a pretty decent basketball. He's a pretty decent
[00:32:05] mascot team owner right now. Well hey go he's a better team owner than an actor so there you go.
[00:32:11] There were those commercials he was doing where he had the straight up Hitler stash for a while
[00:32:15] that was an interesting choice and if none of you have ever seen it when Michael Jordan got
[00:32:22] inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame his speech is like kind of legendary because it is surprisingly
[00:32:30] bitter yeah it's a it's fucking weird to watch you know a guy that's considered the greatest of all
[00:32:36] time. In fact I think he's where the term the goat like came from I think he was sort of the originator
[00:32:42] of it but just to see him just like kind of wine and like a bitch and moan about like random things
[00:32:49] throughout his career was he treated almost like a therapy session it was weird you know what I mean
[00:32:56] like like dude why I felt like the weirdest time to do it but you know it's worth watching because
[00:33:03] it is fucking fascinating. I still think like one of the greatest Michael Jordan moments like in
[00:33:08] recent times I can think of was when a hyalurotic wanted paladig he was like one of the first times
[00:33:15] he was actually there if one of his cars winning and the dude looked like he was like in his like 20s
[00:33:21] again he was like the happiest I've ever seen him he's got like Tyler Reddick's son in the
[00:33:25] arms and he's all like just cheer him out. I remember Tyler Reddick is this short little
[00:33:29] short little guy so you look at them side by side it's like this is hilarious on so many levels.
[00:33:34] Yeah it is weird to think that like Michael Jordan has not been happy for a long time
[00:33:40] like his weirdly and not happy guy but I don't know the details of that but but with slam and jam
[00:33:48] it's not NBA licensed. No it's not. Does it have the players license because there's like
[00:33:54] names in here. Yeah that's what I was trying to figure out because see I thought I was seeing it
[00:33:58] like and I didn't pick Chicago so I didn't see if Jordan was there I didn't check I probably should
[00:34:04] have checked I mean hell it's right here I could track it but. Yeah I don't know I'm assuming
[00:34:10] those were made up names because there is no NBA license anywhere here like the team
[00:34:15] they do have like regions but like the team colors don't match it all times. Oh no not at all
[00:34:23] and usually when they're say just like I'm not sure how works with the NBA but I know
[00:34:28] the NFL there's the NFL license and then the players association. Yeah. Just like the original
[00:34:34] tech mobile it has the players license but not the NFL license so you can have Jerry Rice and Joe
[00:34:40] Montana but they're not on the San Francisco 49ers they're just on the San Francisco team you know
[00:34:46] but they can have the same colors they got away with that as long as they just didn't
[00:34:50] straight up name them and use the logo. Yeah isn't copyrights fun like that and it was like the
[00:34:57] late 80s and you know in tech momated who's a Japanese company so I imagine the NFL wasn't getting
[00:35:04] get too hard on that I think it was when they saw how successful tech mobile was that for the
[00:35:10] sequel they were like yeah you can use our license now and we'll get a little bit of that pie
[00:35:16] because I know the original tech mobile did very very well and Super Bowl did even better and I
[00:35:22] think that's because I had the NFL license on. Yeah now it's an internet meme and still one of the
[00:35:28] best football games ever made. It is there's just still something funny about letting the freaking
[00:35:33] quarterback just sit there screaming like repeatedly because he won't stop. Yeah well I
[00:35:40] think it's when you have a country that doesn't really care for American football making
[00:35:44] American football game you hit weird oddities like that and then like the cinematic cutscenes
[00:35:49] like Ninja Gaiden which are just fucking they're so cool I love them like when you do the
[00:35:54] when you like you do a feel goal it's like treated like the most serious shit ever and it's
[00:35:59] it's so good I love it so much. And the end tech mode did make basketball games they did
[00:36:06] there was like a Super NBA a Super NHL I've never played any of those so I cannot say
[00:36:13] unfortunately so maybe one of these days we're one of these days I'll sit down and play one of those
[00:36:18] because yeah because this game it's it's it's good I think it is a good game like it's it's very well
[00:36:25] developed as I said I would really like the aesthetic the presentation of it the commentary is
[00:36:30] super solid this game needs an analog stick for fucks sake. It's doing that 3D perspective right there
[00:36:36] as you see with a D pad especially the 3D is D pad which isn't great is very very raw
[00:36:44] and this war on my thumb probably the most of any game we've played. Yeah this is one of those
[00:36:50] poor occasions of like it's a good game that's held back by the 3D oh itself. Yes mostly from a
[00:36:59] control standpoint is I actually think presentation like function wise this game feels great like it doesn't
[00:37:06] slow down at all it's very smooth I think it functions very well it just unfortunately it's held
[00:37:15] back by the 3D I have mediocre controller yeah and it could be my skill level but I couldn't
[00:37:22] winning for fucking game in this and I tried. I'm so bad at basketball like games and kind of
[00:37:29] the sport in general that I tried and I was like yeah I mean it's good but I'm never gonna win.
[00:37:34] I mean the best I did was I lost a game by I think it was six points which I mean could have been
[00:37:42] worse because I did worse because what's weird is there's two different ways to control this.
[00:37:49] There is manual and then franchise so manual is basically you're controlling all the players
[00:37:56] basically like being able to swap between them all to you know try to make plays and everything
[00:38:02] but then there's the franchise mode which is before the game starts you pick which player you want
[00:38:07] to be and then you're just him and you can't swap and that allows your AI teammates to actually
[00:38:13] be smarter because in manual they're fucking dumbish shit like I'm yelling at them to try to get
[00:38:18] the fucking rebounds or steal or make plays and they just don't do it but then in franchise mode
[00:38:23] they're they're moving they're making plays they're like dunking doing all this like alley
[00:38:27] eubes and shit like they're doing they're doing the stuff right so in franchise I prefer that
[00:38:32] I feel on more part of a team you know and especially with something that's trying to be more
[00:38:37] sim based like this I think getting that sort of team sport feeling is much better because then
[00:38:43] you can just focus on your one guy but then the problem is if you're like me and you're not great at it
[00:38:49] they're gonna const the opponent's gonna constantly pass to the guy you're trying to block and he's
[00:38:53] just gonna get all the points because because I'm trying to steal but then the plot like to go for
[00:38:59] steals but then the problem is they made the same button that steal when you're running
[00:39:05] if you just do a speed burst so I'm trying to catch up to them to stop then to hit the thing and I
[00:39:10] would just fuck it up and just mad dash away from them which was not a good look.
[00:39:15] No it's just one of those unfortunate things where it's like it's like the game is clearly good
[00:39:21] but your skill levels just not there so you're in like oh man I'm suffering.
[00:39:26] Yeah I mean it'd be curious to see some like pro play at this like somebody who really knows what the
[00:39:31] fuck they're doing you know to really get some high quality play out of it because I'm sure you could
[00:39:36] and it is funny seeing like crystal dynamics on the little barrier around the the court
[00:39:42] you know like the the sponsor you know expected to see Gax at some point I never did.
[00:39:47] Now you only say how would it be? I would have been a good touch though.
[00:39:50] Yeah they do like kind of like a Mario like tennis half like Gax be like the referee or something
[00:39:55] yeah because the only reference to Gax is the back of the manual.
[00:40:00] And he's in the the Chris dynamics logo at the start. Yeah on with the hoard.
[00:40:07] The hoard links. Is this better or worse than Gax?
[00:40:14] It's a weird question because they're very different games but we are gonna have that paramet
[00:40:18] some point. That's going to be a tough one because I prefer Gax because I can actually finish Gax
[00:40:27] but this is a really solid game. So this is a hard comparison to me like a better comparison would be
[00:40:34] is this better than maddened? No.
[00:40:38] See that's where I feel like is a comparison because I'd rather play this than FIFA.
[00:40:43] Yeah. Yeah. And it was really good.
[00:40:47] Though I think I prefer maddened probably for my prejudice just because like I know football
[00:40:51] and I can play football games pretty well. Right? So there's that sort of prejudice there for me.
[00:41:00] But yeah but I'd say it with like Gax I mean this runs better than Gax like
[00:41:04] Gax is slow it should over here. There's no slow down, there's no bugs or any sort of
[00:41:09] graphical glitches. It all performs incredibly well. And and for a lot of sports games from this
[00:41:16] time it is rather bare bones. There's an exhibition game, there's the season mode you can
[00:41:21] make a playoffs like like a tournament basically that's really it. There isn't that much beyond
[00:41:26] that but you don't you don't always need a lot of crazy bells and whistles you know like hell
[00:41:31] probably my favorite baseball game of all time is baseball advance on the GBA which is as bare
[00:41:38] bones as it gets for us content goes but the actual gameplay is fantastic so fuck yeah just pick a
[00:41:45] season and just go in it you know. And I imagine with this if you wanted to do that you probably
[00:41:50] could have a good time with it if you enjoy the base gameplay but if you're not really like
[00:41:56] sports person I mean there's no real reason to play this game. This isn't one of those rare
[00:42:02] sports games that can bring in the casuals like people who like say only they play like shooters or
[00:42:07] whatever like this like the ones sports game they play this isn't going to be that really this this isn't
[00:42:12] like an NFL 2K 5 where I'm like that game literally could make anybody like football.
[00:42:17] That's a great fun game. I've realized I'm not that good at NFL 2K 5 because
[00:42:23] I think it's just because it's very sim and I have to sort of think about because I play it the way
[00:42:28] I play like say Mad Nova which works for Madden but doesn't really work for NFL 2K so I need to like
[00:42:36] adjust my brain a little bit to because now I have it and I've been playing it a little bit more here
[00:42:42] so I kind of need to get back into the groove of like 2K is a lot more technical and I need to think
[00:42:46] about it a little differently. 2K was just such a good football game when it came up.
[00:42:52] Oh it's it's still as phenomenal. Like you know by today standards it holds the fuck up.
[00:42:58] It was so good that it basically made E-H-Shoot themselves and by the license exclusively.
[00:43:04] On it I would probably argue so much. It wasn't the game but the fact that it launched at 20 bucks.
[00:43:11] Well yeah that was like that's what scared the shit out of them.
[00:43:14] Sega's big middle finger DA basically thing like yeah not only is our game better but we're also going
[00:43:19] to sell it at half the price and I think 2K 5 was the last for all those sports games that
[00:43:25] Sega published I think that's when they sold them. Yeah because they lost the NFL and they said
[00:43:29] fuck it when I'm making money out the rest of these so they sold it to take two.
[00:43:32] Which is crazy because now like NBA 2K is like the big money maker and there might be an alternate
[00:43:38] universe where Sega is still publishing those. Which is funny too because they're too crazy.
[00:43:43] There NBA 2K games were pretty still doing well but the oh yeah.
[00:43:47] Their big seller was the NFL 2K games at the time. For sure because like
[00:43:51] I don't know for certain but I feel like the NBA is slow it I'd say it's about on part
[00:43:59] with the NFL in terms of popularity I think. It's definitely up there.
[00:44:03] Mask of all has always been growing in popularity at least as far as I've been a kid like it's just
[00:44:09] gotten bigger and bigger and bigger. It's always been going up. Whereas I think the NFL is starting to
[00:44:14] go downhill a little bit in terms of popularity. So we're at like a weird crossroads with that you know
[00:44:20] like I'm around football people a lot more than Mask of Ball but if I go out saying to the wild
[00:44:26] you know say out in public or whatever I hear more people discussing Mask of Ball than football so.
[00:44:30] Yeah like I know in the early 2000s the NFL was like the late 90s early 2000s and
[00:44:36] the NFL was like at the top. It was okay. The closest any sport got to touching it was
[00:44:42] believe they're not NASCAR. Not believe that. It was that window when NASCAR was like really big.
[00:44:48] Yeah NASCAR peaked in 2004 and then it chased for the cup to 2005. I ironically is adding a playoff
[00:44:56] is what killed started the downfall but that's weird. The chase for the cup to 2005.
[00:45:02] I've heard good things about that one. It wasn't that the game that calls that driver to do
[00:45:08] that stupid thing and when the race. I think it was either that or you mean that the hell melon.
[00:45:16] Yes. Was it when it later he said that he said all I played a lot of NASCAR
[00:45:21] traits for the cup of my game cube? It was either chased for the cup or in our 2004.
[00:45:27] I think I remember he said it was for the game cube specifically I remember that.
[00:45:31] And he said when he'd go around corners he would do that move and it always worked.
[00:45:36] So in that moment he just channeled his like 10 year old self and said fuck it.
[00:45:41] Yeah. And it worked and it worked but it didn't catch on.
[00:45:45] One of the they banded almost immediately after he did they really?
[00:45:49] Well, they they left it alone for the rest of the season and then the second the season conclude
[00:45:55] because that was the second to last reason the season. They had one more race after that.
[00:45:59] They left they left it alone until after the final reason and they immediately banded basically
[00:46:05] yeah and if you do that again it doesn't count. Why?
[00:46:10] Because they honestly it was a safety issue.
[00:46:16] Oh, okay. Why they worried about like if you do that you're basically like could kill yourself?
[00:46:22] Let's just say if he had hooked like the right part that arguably.
[00:46:27] Martin'sville is the one track that he kind of got it could have gotten away with it.
[00:46:30] Any bigger track and you could seriously fuck the box something out pretty bad.
[00:46:36] Okay. And a safety thing that's fine.
[00:46:39] See Martin'sville is such a slow track because it's so small that like he was he wasn't
[00:46:44] really going that fast when he had pulled the move because all the the reason why it looks so
[00:46:50] mental.
[00:46:52] On in like videos that you watch it is just because like literally everybody else is slowing down
[00:46:57] for the corner and he just fucking puts it into fifth year and just fucking goes around the corner
[00:47:03] at full speed and like makes like 12 positions. It is one of the most
[00:47:08] surreal things that will that ever happened in the sport and it will never happen again which
[00:47:13] kind of makes it even more awesome in that way.
[00:47:15] Yeah, and the thing is we're not at that point where they're going to use it in highlights because it's band.
[00:47:21] On other still use they still bring it up anytime we go to Martin'sville like they always have to
[00:47:25] bring up the crazy Hail melon and it's gonna forever be attached to Ross Chestern who's already
[00:47:31] one of the most probably one of the best new drivers we've had in a long time just because he
[00:47:36] doesn't give a shit like he's not like he's not afraid to say what he wants like
[00:47:42] he actually will fight back what would a driver actually confronts him?
[00:47:46] That's good.
[00:47:47] Is he that one who's trying to knock drivers out or am I thinking to my else?
[00:47:54] Not deliberately he had a bit of a point there where he would take people out of my accident
[00:47:59] just because he'd go for it. Yeah, yeah because I don't know I thought I had heard there was
[00:48:05] one driver who like it always appeared that he was intentionally trying to knock people out and
[00:48:10] it's like do don't do that don't drive dirty. You know? Now Ross never does it on purpose. He's just
[00:48:16] Ross's legit only cares about his race so if someone happens to be in the way, oops.
[00:48:25] Yeah, is it a different way of approaching the sport again?
[00:48:29] It's the most entertaining driver we've had in a long time so
[00:48:34] new for the new in terms of the new yard anyways.
[00:48:37] Yeah, for sure.
[00:48:39] But yeah, so going back now to slam in jam
[00:48:42] we already talked about graphics for the most part like this game looks really good for 3D O standards.
[00:48:47] Oh yeah, I mean you guys can see the video listeners can see it behind me. I think still looks
[00:48:53] really nice like surprisingly kind of holds up. You know? It's not a fan of not a fan of the camera
[00:48:59] you know like having like the hoop essentially getting the ways is a little annoying and I feel like
[00:49:04] my perspective. I kind of lose it here and there.
[00:49:09] You know like NBA jam had it right with it being horizontal.
[00:49:12] So like even though you have the 3D space you're not worrying about it so much
[00:49:16] whereas with this one I'm constantly worried about where I am on the court, you know or that I should be.
[00:49:22] This was that weird era of we're still in that weird like spot between full 3D and full 2D
[00:49:30] but they really hadn't figured it out quite yet. Exactly. And this was one of those games that kind
[00:49:36] of was just trying something to see how it worked and it didn't catch on but it wasn't the most
[00:49:42] like offensive thing ever. Oh, not not at all. I far from it I would say.
[00:49:47] I'd comment on the music but there isn't a lot of music during the actual gameplay.
[00:49:55] Yeah, there really isn't which I find strange. I like the weird funky guitar like
[00:50:01] during like the menus and like intro stuff but yeah that's nice but yeah the audio I mean
[00:50:08] I'll really have is the commentary I forget the guy's name but he reminds me of
[00:50:14] who's the the Scott the Was it's awesome maybe. Oh that got got the Dix up Dix something.
[00:50:21] Yeah is it Dix but how? I think so. Tallah yeah here reminds me a little bit of him
[00:50:28] but like more like the the store brand version you know and yeah not as not as like unhinged
[00:50:34] yeah basically yeah for sure. So did you check out any of the the sequels?
[00:50:40] I did not so apparently slam a gym 96 is basically the same game just a little updated.
[00:50:48] Yeah it's on the PlayStation and the Saturn. Yeah I looked into it a little bit it it was about the same
[00:50:55] and they got Magic Johnson and cream abdued your bar on it. It was still that era where was like
[00:51:05] you couldn't get the entire license like oh we can't get them. I'll be licensed but we can
[00:51:10] get cream can graphe design on so I have canning graphe baseball which is still phenomenal.
[00:51:17] You know or um you know say like well when they did court side they did have the NBA
[00:51:23] license but they still were doing though Kobe Bryant the NBA court side which was kind of weird
[00:51:28] but whatever. Well I love the fact that it's like the first one is the first one is
[00:51:33] Kobe Bryant's NBA court side and then the second one is NBA court side to featuring Kobe Bryant
[00:51:38] and then the third one's just NBA court side 2002 and then Kobe Bryant's just on the cover like
[00:51:44] yeah in the title anymore. Yeah I wonder what he thought of those games.
[00:51:50] I'm any probably enjoy this paycheck. That's fair.
[00:51:54] So also this game has multiplayer. I didn't have a game with fucking needs the multiplayer.
[00:52:04] It's a fucking sports game dude. You know it wouldn't surprise me if they didn't include it because
[00:52:09] hilariously for a system called the 3DO interactive multiplayer system. That doesn't much
[00:52:13] multiplayer as you'd think. True but I feel like sports games are kind of like you need
[00:52:20] to have multiplayer like that's an necessity. Yeah and I imagine multiplayer for this game
[00:52:25] makes a lot more fun. Probably because you're at least evenly matched. I can do it degree.
[00:52:33] Because even on easy they kick your ass. Yeah you have to like make them rock, rock stupid.
[00:52:39] I think really win. Basically it's like if you can like on offense I don't struggle but it's like
[00:52:46] my defense is just dog shit man. Like I'm trying to like get rebounds and like you know take
[00:52:52] the ball away but my teammates just don't on franchise they're better about it but
[00:52:59] it's just like guys you can't let them just take the ball like that.
[00:53:04] It depends. Yeah yeah it's just one of those. So going into reception now for the game
[00:53:12] the game was mostly well received. Like a lot of people can compliment it how smooth the
[00:53:18] the frame rate was, how like oh yeah solid it was the biggest complaint was a lot of people said like
[00:53:24] if you're not a basketball fan this probably won't appeal to you. Yeah for sure I can win.
[00:53:31] It's fair. His game got in the word. It did. It was awarded 3DO Sports Game of the Year.
[00:53:39] Yeah I'm thinking trying to think like what other sports so the 3DO was only around for a couple
[00:53:44] years. So I tried to think what sports game it was up against 95. That and was already out.
[00:53:55] I think FIFA was already out. I think so. Maybe they beat one of the 7 golf games on this.
[00:54:03] Probably there wasn't a baseball game for 3DO was there.
[00:54:08] I don't know. I'm going to have to look into that now because we're going to have to do the
[00:54:11] trifecta at some point. Yeah let's see just just trying to glance through 90.
[00:54:21] Well it's pretty much about 94. No it actually did come out 95. No that what?
[00:54:28] Now if not get now they're fucking with me. It's just trying to glance real quick.
[00:54:33] I don't really see any other as wicked 18.
[00:54:44] Striker striker World Cup special. I don't know if that came out here in the states.
[00:54:50] I don't think it did soccer game not a guarantee. The soccer kid count as a sports game.
[00:55:00] No nice try.
[00:55:05] Uh PGA Tour 96. That's probably it's only like genuine competition.
[00:55:13] That's a golf games. So the award would foes of all e count because it's a boxing game.
[00:55:20] Does boxing count as sports? I'd say boxing is more of a sport than
[00:55:27] but would you say it's more of like a sport or a fighting game?
[00:55:30] Um usually boxing games are more sporty than a true fighter.
[00:55:37] Yeah.
[00:55:39] Because it's not like a WW. Like because even like the WWEs is more fighter-ish than a
[00:55:46] a true boxing game. Yeah usually wrestling games I just put them in their own genre
[00:55:50] because they're like their own weird amalgamation of like fighting games and then there's
[00:55:55] like sports management stuff that happens as well. Especially in the more of like
[00:55:59] layers, machinvers or raw games. Yeah boxing games are our confusing ones for me because
[00:56:04] they're I can't think of a lot of like simulation boxing games because usually when I think
[00:56:09] of boxing games I'll think of like punch out or like ready to rumble. Yeah and from what I know
[00:56:16] folks while you will do review it at some point. Um eight I think it is it has like the ready to rumble
[00:56:23] like hammer angle and even a raid a rumble I think came out later. It's kind of in that vein you know
[00:56:30] like it's fight night sim maybe? I don't know. I'm not really I'm not a boxing expert at all.
[00:56:38] Nah, not at all. But we'll play football as a volleyball one of these days.
[00:56:43] Yeah I mean we've pretty much established we'll get if it's a 3D game we'll get to it at some point.
[00:56:48] I mean we played we played god damn triple threat. So I forgot.
[00:56:55] And we're gonna play tripped at some point. Yeah and what's cool is that um that award thing
[00:57:01] whatever it links to a business wire article where they have like the 3D awards so and everything's
[00:57:08] here like they have like the game of the year for like various genres like the overall game of the year
[00:57:15] you know it's pretty it's pretty it's pretty kooky like the game of the year for 95 was need for speed
[00:57:23] That's fair. Like the fighting game was primal rage which is funny
[00:57:28] the strategy puzzle game but those two together with space Hulk vengeance of the blood angels
[00:57:34] the edge entertainment title of the year that one got title in that game of the year was a station invasion
[00:57:41] um when it went up. Probably the simulation of the year was need for speed which is a
[00:57:48] that what um best 3D game was star fighter two player game was returned fire interactive movie was
[00:57:56] wing commander they had an interactive movie the year carrier that's awesome for wing commander three
[00:58:01] adventure game killing time it's an adventure game action game of the year was gecks
[00:58:07] and then they had their little thing of like oh here are the new golden platinum products
[00:58:12] so like the golds were what sold more than 100,000 and there's a couple games on there
[00:58:16] and then the platinum was more than 250,000 the only two are FIFA and gecks
[00:58:24] FIFA it interests me uh gecks I'm not surprised I guess the soccer's popular so I guess yeah
[00:58:30] soccer is very popular I mean think about it how often do you hear a soccer game didn't sell
[00:58:37] what I find interesting though is the on 3D of all things because 3D is a console that
[00:58:44] really I don't think did anything outside of America other than Japan
[00:58:52] I don't even know if 3D is came out in Europe well you gotta remember there are Americans and
[00:58:57] Japanese people who like soccer it is a world like we associated with like Europe and South America
[00:59:02] but it is a worldwide sport I'm just thinking like hell like football clubs are starting to be more
[00:59:08] of a bigger deal in the states now true I'm just thinking like the context of like the 90s was it
[00:59:13] it people still people still cared about it it has fans man so people people show up for FIFA and
[00:59:20] it has the FIFA name so people show up for it true I can't wait to see that apparently a FIFA
[00:59:28] 2K is coming out this year which is crazy that it's this year because last year
[00:59:35] was when they cut ties with there's when EA cut ties with the FIFA license right and I'm like
[00:59:40] there is no way visual concepts got a soccer game up and ready to go in a year no way
[00:59:46] so is it visual concepts making it well they make all the 2K games right
[00:59:51] no they don't make all of them they only make the uh the basketball and the uh
[00:59:59] WWE F whatever it's called games the WWE ones yeah I don't think they make the basketball games
[01:00:06] or the uh it's like tennis sports or whatever there's probably divisions within it I don't know
[01:00:12] the structure of it but still it's like still even if they got a whole year to do it it's like
[01:00:20] it's fully licensed with 35 plus teet leagues and 800 plus teams like the amount of content this
[01:00:26] is supposed to have is like how in the fuck did they get this in a year I mean did they use AI
[01:00:32] and that's gonna be a fucking dumpster fire like I have a feeling when this game releases
[01:00:36] it's gonna be a dumpster fire and it's gonna be yeah oh I just realized the name of the announcer
[01:00:43] in the game is a vannarl right that's right and I like him he was good he actually was I
[01:00:51] guess a sportscaster for he works for Turner sports now he worked he was on CNN sports tonight
[01:00:59] for a while I believe it I mean did you get job no yeah I really I really enjoyed him yeah
[01:01:07] he did good um also the producer bit this game is bill Mitchell I don't think it's that billy
[01:01:13] Mitchell that would be amazing without be interesting that would be amazing so now I guess
[01:01:24] must play okay stay away I mean this is a tough one for me I don't want to say must play because
[01:01:32] I don't think this is a game that will peel everybody but I feel like it's better than
[01:01:37] if you're still okay yeah I agree like it's too good to be okay but like I don't know if
[01:01:46] I would say must play for this I don't really know if I would I think I'm gonna break the rating
[01:01:54] and say that this game is solid yeah I'll say I'll say it's a good one okay
[01:02:04] like like if this interests you go play it man you'll probably if this is what you want
[01:02:12] you'll have a great time you know but even if you're not and say you're curious to what we're
[01:02:18] playing right and you'll play this you're probably like yeah it's good like it's it's well above
[01:02:24] okay left field no what they're doing but at the same time I can't recommend it as like a must
[01:02:29] play because I think it's too sim heavy and not it's not beginner friendly at all yeah that's really
[01:02:36] the the biggest thing that kind of gets on the way if it was easier to kind of get into it
[01:02:41] from a casual perspective it would be an absolute must play and it would be one of the better
[01:02:46] sports games I think it is one of the better sports games on the system but as you said what I put
[01:02:50] this above say madden now yeah even though this I think is looks better the game plays probably
[01:02:59] more solid and is more feature rich than madden but bad just plays better I think yeah that was
[01:03:07] kind of my whole thoughts on it like I had fun playing this but it's not a game that I would find
[01:03:15] myself playing just because I want to like I wouldn't like if we weren't reviewing it for the show
[01:03:23] this probably wouldn't have been a game I would have been like I want to own slam in GM 95 as a kid
[01:03:29] yes but as a game itself it's perfectly fine like I had fun playing it I can see why people
[01:03:39] would like it it's just not a game for me no I would say if you want to play a basketball game
[01:03:49] I would say get it get a NBA jam or if you want something that's a little bit more involved maybe
[01:03:55] NBA Street Volume 2 yeah I can't tell you which are the good and bad NBA 2K games
[01:04:03] I played one of the Dreamcast ones and I thought it was solid I can't remember which one it was though but
[01:04:09] play one play one of the Dreamcasts 2K sports games I'm sure those all are good like all the
[01:04:15] NFL 2K games with your in-caster phenomenal yeah honestly like this is a hard one but yeah honestly
[01:04:27] like if you come if you're a 3D O collector and you see this game this game and it is an expensive
[01:04:34] and you see it for you which cheap go for it I'd say it's easy filler for your collection like most
[01:04:40] sports games are yeah and you'll probably get a decent like laugh out of it or at least like
[01:04:46] you'll have fun for like an hour yeah like what's so crazy about sports games is yeah if you're
[01:04:51] collecting for a specific console there's gonna be like a fair amount of them and those are usually
[01:04:57] like the cheap ones because their value only really exists for that little bit of time where they're
[01:05:02] relevant there are exceptions of course so when you go back you know you'll you'll probably
[01:05:10] go through them be like oh let's see and you'd be like oh not bad like this is one of those
[01:05:15] this is like say if you bought a copy of like Mad No 7 for the game cube or like the S2
[01:05:21] or whatever and because it was like super cheap and you're like oh let me just pop it in and play
[01:05:25] and then you do and you're like oh this is pretty good yeah good good stuff yeah so I was still in the
[01:05:32] era where Mad No wasn't shit yeah or like NASCAR dirt to Daytona or something for like PS2
[01:05:38] like that's a fun cheap game or the the Tiger Woods PGA Tour Series like through the mid 2000s
[01:05:46] those all are really good yeah although I will say I'm more of a hot shot golf guy myself
[01:05:52] that's fair but that's a different kind of golf game that's true so yeah for next game I'm not really
[01:06:03] sure we've done a fighter recently we've done we've done a bunch of FPS games yeah
[01:06:17] see looking at the collection I have here okay I wish I had an easier way to look at all my games
[01:06:34] do you get psychic detective yet I do have that one that one might that could be fun I feel like
[01:06:41] we're gonna need some more time for that one though yeah that'll probably be a two weeker
[01:06:46] so I was thinking next week maybe we do our we do another developer showcase and we talk about
[01:06:51] we do our toys for Bob episode that we uh we're talking about let's do that okay and then we'll make
[01:06:56] the next game psychic detective but we won't have I don't think I think what we'll do is we won't
[01:07:02] give a date when we're gonna officially do it but we'll get that'll be our next game and if we
[01:07:07] have to do other episodes in between we'll do that yeah maybe we'll sneak an army man game
[01:07:14] then there we have to army man game maybe we'll play some battle tanks or something there you go
[01:07:19] well we gotta get quest if we're gonna do battle tanks yeah yeah I get the big boy but I have both
[01:07:24] army men games for the original Xbox now so yeah I don't really want to play major malfunction
[01:07:31] but I have I have that sealed yeah I have a sealed copy where it belongs
[01:07:40] I bought it sealed I think it was like 10 bucks maybe and then I look on like price charting
[01:07:46] and it's like oh it's like $40 I'm like what what yeah price charting is a little sub price charting
[01:07:54] is a little sub sometimes occasionally occasionally but they do they do good work
[01:08:02] yeah but yeah so next week we'll talk toys for Bob and yeah other than that though once again guys
