[00:00:00] Hey I'm Jerry, hey I'm Aaron and this is Retro Rehab.
[00:00:21] Hey welcome back to Retro Rehab.
[00:00:23] Hello the great collaboration of all time today we're going to talk about some amazing
[00:00:28] 16 bit RPGs that you may or may not have heard of or played before actually before we
[00:00:35] involve that though Jerry what the heck could possibly be new in the world of Retro.
[00:00:42] Aaron I'm glad you asked let's start off with the Nintendo shenanigans I guess Nintendo
[00:00:52] has to calm down they got a calm down man because like if they're not going to make you
[00:01:00] know their catalog of amazing games it's like let's be real man they got amazing games
[00:01:05] and they got like a huge fantastical catalog of great games ranging from 8 bit 16 bit everywhere
[00:01:14] it's just good stuff but like I don't know they're like super but hurt every time someone's
[00:01:19] like hey how about we preserve these for you and they're like not on our fucking watch
[00:01:26] so with that said Mr Bradley Nintendo himself is like I'll be cold and dead in my goddamn
[00:01:35] 12 foot deep grave forever let anyone touch Metroid if anyone's gonna leave that fucking
[00:01:45] fridge it's going to the wall with me bearing me with all of my Metroid cards he would
[00:01:54] with Mr. Metroid himself bearing me six feet deep with Rob the robot don't you dare try
[00:02:01] to replicate him so yeah Nintendo they done did it they shut down Yuzu if you don't know
[00:02:10] Yuzu is it was an emulator that was created for PC to be able to play switch games but I mean
[00:02:20] the thing is like there was some gray area there like there wasn't like totally uncalled for
[00:02:30] but at the same time it's like all right guys like let's take it easy I think a lot of it was
[00:02:34] the fact that even even even if you did it the way like proper like if you if you had the
[00:02:43] cart show the cart was like I own this game and here's me playing this game on Yuzu then they
[00:02:50] with like I don't know they were still like nah it plays better on that thing how dare you because
[00:02:57] like I know for myself I tried out the Yuzu emulator on I have my steam deck and it was like oh this
[00:03:04] is just a better switch like it was it was crazy but I think the the nail on the coffin was the
[00:03:11] fact that breath of the or not breath of the wild tears of the kingdom leaked like fucking two weeks
[00:03:20] early or something and yeah they didn't and care for that they didn't they didn't really like that
[00:03:29] too much so I mean fair I mean you can't really blame them for that but then they then they went
[00:03:37] shut down Citra because Citra is like I think by the same developers as Yuzu and I don't know man
[00:03:44] like what did we really need to shut down a 3DS emulator I mean isn't the 3DS eShop done like
[00:03:51] isn't that doesn't that like not exist anymore I'm pretty sure though just hates the hate gamers
[00:04:01] more than Konami I guess yeah they they hit preservation that's for god damn well sure but
[00:04:10] we kind of like they kind like they kind of like hard kind of like to preserve some of their old games
[00:04:19] like mostly fucking excite bike and like any Mario Brothers game they'll be like all bets on the new
[00:04:25] tanda so the new nanda well like there's a lot of I mean how many time how many iterations are the
[00:04:33] virtual console are we're gonna get like this is really nice that's that's that's at least like
[00:04:41] I wish they would have carried that shit over from like system to system to system instead of
[00:04:46] making it like a new whole fucking thing every fucking system because like fucking games you
[00:04:52] bond like the Wii virtual console I'm kind of going off an attention here but like the games you
[00:04:57] bond like the Wii virtual console didn't carry over to the Wii U virtual console or the yeah
[00:05:01] 3DS virtual console god forbid like if they would have made that forward compatible that would
[00:05:07] have been kind of cool but Nintendo's like nope money money money please and yeah yeah fuck was
[00:05:15] that Mr. Krabs yeah that was this one best mr. Krabs money money money money money it's pretty good
[00:05:22] it's pretty good um but you know and now Aaron can't speak for the remainder of the podcast um it's
[00:05:31] me Aaron uh if if Nintendo is not gonna preserve shit the the community's still gonna do it like
[00:05:42] they can't shut down everything and on that note um one of my favorite preservation uh things
[00:05:50] is the mister and I guess it was around this time last year I think uh Robert who is the developer
[00:05:59] of the n64 core for the mister so if you don't know what the mister is the mister is essentially um
[00:06:06] I don't know it's like people will argue like there's a there's a blurred line of like what is
[00:06:10] actually considered emulation and the best way that I can describe it which is the incorrect way but
[00:06:15] for the for most people it'll make sense it's not emulating the games it's emulating the consoles
[00:06:21] so that you get like the one to one like it's good it's it's fantastic so this this Robert guy
[00:06:29] he um he started develop he announced that he was going to try to make the n64 core
[00:06:36] the n64 core even like a year and a half ago everybody was like that's never gonna happen
[00:06:41] like the mister is tapped out now even the ps1 I guess was like a big deal like the fact that
[00:06:46] that even got developed which was also developed by the same dude um so his goal was to have one
[00:06:54] game playable by Christmas and by Christmas pretty much everything worked like with some some bugs
[00:07:02] yeah it was crazy he pulled off like the impossible and I guess uh just I think it was just last month
[00:07:11] at the time of this recording he kind of hit a brick wall and unfortunately like made this post
[00:07:15] saying like guys this is it like hit the brick wall this as far as it goes and it's not a 100%
[00:07:22] compatible a lot of the there's like a few get there's a very short list of games that do not work
[00:07:29] um like jet force Gemini flat out does not work uh you can get into the game for like a few seconds
[00:07:37] and then it just crashes the big but like oh gives a shit about jet force Gemini anyways
[00:07:45] is that good is that a good game I mean it's good but like it's also on Xbox one oh yeah it's
[00:07:51] on that yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah it's readily available so so fuck it the one that people were the
[00:08:00] most but heard about is conquerors bad for day is one of the ones that it has you can it's weird
[00:08:08] you can actually get through it if you like safe scum say like if you just like save it often um
[00:08:15] because it has random freezes like it'll just freeze it random ass times
[00:08:21] and fuck yeah I know it's it's crazy um but it does work like I have actually thrown it on and
[00:08:28] I played it and yeah it's true like it it will just randomly freeze like you might splash in a puddle
[00:08:34] and then it just all of a sudden something to do with like the memory and like the the timing
[00:08:40] of the core and stuff like it's just it does can't handle it but that being said so at 90
[00:08:46] episode replay also it is uh there's there's I mean there's there's other ways to play it um
[00:08:53] I think Resident Evil 2, 64 doesn't work also has like intermittent
[00:08:58] freezes but like the PS1 core is 100% compatible I would say play Resident Evil 2 on the PS1
[00:09:08] and if anything if you're gonna play it on something I would play it on that
[00:09:12] and then I think is there a Dreamcast core for that thing so they could think two
[00:09:18] no also one dreamcast no they wouldn't it's um it's like it's tapped out now with this at 64
[00:09:24] thing like something to do with like the um the memory like that's actually built into
[00:09:31] the the mystery I guess it's like it's tapped out like it's things as far as it can go
[00:09:35] there's like rumors and stuff that there's like this other thing called the Mars project
[00:09:39] um which is like according to them like a successor to the
[00:09:44] the mister but like it's probably gonna be like thousands of dollars because even the mister is like
[00:09:49] such cheap um but yeah like the Mars thing they're saying like it there's like this
[00:09:55] hazy cloud of like oh it might play a dreamcast game but like the I don't know
[00:10:01] how feasible that's gonna be I mean you could there's other ways you could do dreamcast like
[00:10:07] I have I have a dreamcast and it's got the um I did the uh I can't remember what the name of the
[00:10:13] mod is but it's got like the SD card thing in it and yeah that's there's I think there's only one
[00:10:19] game that doesn't really work with that setup is um uh crazy taxi no it starts with the B
[00:10:29] it's on at 64 to I can't it'll come to me eventually um but holes yeah that that's the one uh
[00:10:39] but yeah so the 64 core is done essentially with the cool thing is uh he did a like a parallel
[00:10:47] core to that core called the uh the n64 turbo core and it actually runs some games in like
[00:10:54] locked 60 like did he con racing in 60 frames per second dude oh yeah oh yeah dude I played
[00:11:02] cool I played through Castlevania Legacy of Darkness with the high res mode turn on which is normally
[00:11:09] like a fucking slide show and that was like oh fuck it was powerpoint presentation
[00:11:20] and it knows 95 like the darkness yeah man no it was it was fantastic it ran beautifully um and
[00:11:27] like even even stuff like I was like when I was testing out the core like as it was coming along
[00:11:33] I was I took a video of me playing Bomberman hero and I sent it to my buddy and he was like
[00:11:40] hang on a second because he has an actual n64 with the hdmy mod and he threw it on and he was like
[00:11:48] you have way better like you have like locked 30 frames or something like what's going on
[00:11:52] and I was like I don't know dude fuck yeah I'm just like playing it on this core and yeah or it works
[00:11:57] beautifully so at the 98% that we have plus the turbo core yeah I think we're okay we're okay
[00:12:05] that's pretty fucking solid all things considered because like even my uh the little like retro
[00:12:11] handhelds like in particular I have the in brinick rg 353 ps or something like that and they can run
[00:12:20] quite a few n64 games but there's some like wave race 64 it flat out refuses to fucking really
[00:12:29] because it's just yeah it's just two were just ways to realistic man was way the fucking
[00:12:36] seagulls do those fucking seagulls are too much that sound way at the beginning just crashes
[00:12:42] the whole game wait race race or you did stops or a curvy 64 it can run but like the ground like
[00:12:54] the textures and the ground freak out so really so yeah it must be it's running off an emulator right
[00:13:01] like it must be just yeah there's some like n64 retro arc core that it uses I forget
[00:13:09] mupe and 60's like three mupe next I think is the one on retro arc that everybody uses
[00:13:14] that sounds right yeah it can run like quite a few n64 games but yeah there's some that it just
[00:13:21] it can't really do the best so the fact that yeah the mister got like 98% compatibility and as
[00:13:27] that fucking turbo nonsense on it like that's pretty fucking and it's it also has he also
[00:13:32] implemented implemented this thing for turning 480i signal to 480p and like de-interit like
[00:13:41] it's like a it's kind of like an oh like yeah yeah it's crazy man like you should go
[00:13:48] you know if you're listening to this and you're an n64 fan definitely go check out the work
[00:13:53] that Robert has done on the s64 core because it is it is fantastic even at even at 9000
[00:13:59] yeah our man Bob bringing it to you Bob gonna give it to you speaking of that let's let's check
[00:14:08] to see if ludicrous is still alive because I haven't heard from that me in a while let's let's
[00:14:11] let's do this is ludicrous alive is this our is this our daily check and see if this person's alive
[00:14:17] is you know what it was funny is ludicrous actually alive still yes he is alive actually okay all right
[00:14:26] so there you have it ludicrous is still alive and with us luda god bless yeah you got polva thank god
[00:14:37] I guess we can finally get the vast and furious sequel that we deserve oh thank god yes
[00:14:45] the I just hope they go fast fast the fear fast the furious was it it's not it's not truly fast and
[00:14:52] furious without ludicrous it's time we got him in his rightful place natural habitat it's fast
[00:14:59] the furious yeah yep and furious yep get that out to luda but uh luda Aaron what what the hell
[00:15:10] we do it here today hey huh what's what's going on here what's uh you uh you brought a topic to
[00:15:15] my attention and I immediately said you son of a bitch I'm in oh we're gonna talk about uh 16 bit RPG
[00:15:24] not so hidden gems yep that's right so we're gonna talk about games are they're pretty pretty
[00:15:32] popular what uh well I mean yeah I think I can kick off with a hidden gem though if you want to
[00:15:40] head down like a hidden gem okay so let's go let's go let's go I'm ready I think you and I and maybe
[00:15:47] like four other people that I know know about secretive men oh like I have the game has changed my
[00:15:58] pants it's so good it's amazing and I can understand how nobody is heard of this game like
[00:16:05] it's it's crazy like I the ring man the ring menu what are you guys doing
[00:16:13] why hasn't anybody used a ring menu again you out of your mind let me get a Mario let me get a Mario
[00:16:29] oh man in the AI control party members that follow you around man like where's that another game I know
[00:16:36] no one's no one's played this game why has nobody ever thought of the fact that you could have
[00:16:44] two your friends come over tap in with a multi tap to assist them and play a three player cooperative
[00:16:55] action RPG in the same room nobody's doing this nobody's doing this everything's gonna be online now
[00:17:03] I had enough of this online garbage I want to sit in a room with my friends
[00:17:09] fuck them I want to sit in a room with smelly fuckers
[00:17:14] and soundtrack is it's pretty good too man the two pan it's not on anything
[00:17:20] I mean it's on it's on everything that's the joke but the soundtrack is really really especially
[00:17:28] the they remastered it I think I think either they like full-on remastered it or like remade it
[00:17:35] with the remake I forget which one it is but it's fucking good that's what you're running good
[00:17:39] mm-hmm now I mean a game that everybody has heard about I would imagine and it's probably sitting
[00:17:46] on everybody shelves because everybody owned this back in the day you couldn't go to a friend's
[00:17:51] house without seeing this game sitting on the shelf and of course I'm talking about Secret of Evermore
[00:17:55] which is basically just oh like Secret of Mana is just way worse or Secret of Evermore you know
[00:18:02] I was saying like yeah fuck you copycat dude watered down Secret of Evermore total copycat
[00:18:09] you know what's crazy is Secret of Evermore okay get this Secret of Evermore came out
[00:18:15] after Secret of Mana and our dumbass is over here in North America we're like is this Secret
[00:18:22] Man 2 no it wasn't because we didn't ever get that until like two and a half seconds ago
[00:18:31] like that didn't exist over here and then when they just did decide to bring it over there like how
[00:18:36] would you guys like like finally like an actual translated version of this oh and a 3d remake
[00:18:42] they just busted it out that said though and they were yeah and so and they were like hey what if
[00:18:50] what if what if like they're they're holding a Secret of Mana cart in their hand they're like
[00:18:56] what if we took out the dog what if we got rid of the dog from Secret of Evermore probably the
[00:19:03] best character in the whole game the dog what if we got rid of him and put two mother fuckers in
[00:19:08] there instead two mother fuckers that you could choose from you could choose the mother fuckers that
[00:19:14] keep you company it's true but no yeah Secret of Evermore came out in like 96 or something like 95
[00:19:22] it was like late it was late to the to the Super Nintendo um but I mean
[00:19:29] it's so good like I haven't I haven't actually played a lot of Secret of Evermore which is
[00:19:35] crazy because everybody owned it um but yeah you you were like in from what I remember playing
[00:19:43] you were in like a prehistoric age at first and I think it goes on like it keeps going like through
[00:19:49] different times and stuff um and I think the the crazy thing is that the pitch for this game was
[00:19:56] made like this wasn't actually developed in Japan it was developed in squares um Seattle division
[00:20:06] and when they developed it I guess square japan was like you got to make this western so they like
[00:20:13] basically made them they were like you got to put all these pop culture references that the
[00:20:17] the westernites are gonna get and that's what they did they were like all right I guess so I guess
[00:20:24] like there's a whole bunch of like different I don't know like references and stuff to like
[00:20:30] pop culture stuff but it's it's pretty fun uh there's actually a misconception that this game
[00:20:38] is co-op out of the box it's not you and I can't throw that on it you can't be the mother-fucked dog
[00:20:45] and I can't eat the dude that holds the stick um but stick man there's a stickman who so
[00:20:52] there's a uh a rom-hack of this game that allows for two player co-op maybe we should play this
[00:20:59] sometime together deep son dog you can have the dog deep son dog okay you can have a cool yeah okay
[00:21:06] all right yeah you got school man yeah um yeah secretive evermore was a lot like secretive mana
[00:21:13] literally had the ring menu um they took a lot of what secretive mana already had and they were
[00:21:20] like well none of this is broken so let's just do it again I guess but it was it was yes it's
[00:21:27] it's a it's a strange little game but yeah I mean it's pretty cool if you like seared a mana I would say
[00:21:35] check that out you get a you get a bazooka pretty early and well I guess you don't like it to keep it
[00:21:42] but you get a bazooka pretty early in the game oh yeah so you like secretive mana dogs and bazookas
[00:21:47] yep you can ever more mm-hmm and there's an alchemy system oh yeah yeah yeah do like do
[00:21:55] alchemy to make magic and stuff yeah it's really cool it's fucking tight yeah I'd check it out we
[00:22:01] should check it out let's check it out let's check it out okay okay let me get a Mario oof
[00:22:07] Mario oh okay well I've got one for you Jerry so so
[00:22:16] man how do I how do I say it so so earthbound right what is that big fucking big fucking copycat earthbound
[00:22:24] oh fuck hang on I fucked it all up already um so let me let me sell you on this game that I just
[00:22:30] discovered maybe two other people on some secret wiki form I've heard of this uh
[00:22:37] we make sure the room is clear earthbound what the hell is that uh so so like earthbound
[00:22:45] you play as kids and you're fighting literally fucking everything uh uh crows snakes paintings
[00:22:55] cars cultists robots aliens bucket everything you're fighting everything because everything is
[00:23:03] possessed by this being who it just exudes pure evil um what if I were to tell you that uh
[00:23:11] there's uh there's not much better it just sounds like god growth or evolution for the super
[00:23:20] Nintendo it is it's a lot like that actually fuck my bad it's growth or de-evolution the fuck
[00:23:28] whatever but yeah isn't like that I just remember seeing the cover of this thing and thinking
[00:23:35] is that a bald kid yeah he joins he joins you later on man so tell me about this game
[00:23:45] dude so it starts off like earthbound your little kid um well it's like earthub because you start off
[00:23:53] as a little kid but um so you're on your way to your grandma's house for the summer um and then
[00:24:01] I've had burp so you're only waiting to the grandma to your grandma's house for the summer and come
[00:24:07] across this like shrine or something I forget and then game take place in modern times yeah well
[00:24:17] it starts off in modern times then you find that shrine or whatever and then time like skips ahead
[00:24:22] a few years to where humanity has been completely overtaken and like overrun by aliens and shit
[00:24:29] um so now the kid that you were he's now aged maybe I forget how many years I think it's like
[00:24:36] five years or something and uh then yeah the get the the combat is I mean it's like any other RPG
[00:24:45] from the time kind of because it's like the menus and ship yeah yeah so like where earthbound is
[00:24:50] like give that first person perspective um you have like a little over the over the shoulder
[00:24:55] view of light you'll see your each of your four characters on the screen and you'll see them do
[00:24:59] their actions and shit um kind of like uh I can't think of like another one on the SNES that's
[00:25:08] like that as well too if you look up a uh like some screenshots of of the game you'll be able to
[00:25:16] see it possibly but yeah it's there there are tons of English translations out there so the game
[00:25:23] is super easy to you just install it and it'll come with the fucking English patch like pre-installed
[00:25:29] you can install the ROM in them fucking load it up and bam it's ready to go and it's fun man
[00:25:34] it's really cool wonder uh just for curiosity sake so long to beat God how long to kill how long
[00:25:46] would it take to kill God oh so it's a weird title
[00:25:54] growth or the evolution he'd the call to awaken
[00:25:59] yeah it's got a really fucking long like Japanese name 36 hours oh shit
[00:26:06] I need to finish this one yeah I like this character yeah it's it's really fucking good
[00:26:13] looks neat yeah I didn't I don't know much about this actually I mean I can't believe that
[00:26:20] everybody else is this game and nobody's heard of earthbound
[00:26:25] I know right hey if you listen into this go go try to find earthbound I mean it's
[00:26:32] maybe maybe you'll be able to find it all seriousness I dare you to pay for earthbound
[00:26:37] it's so expensive I double-doctor you to go buy a copy of earthbound I take Jerry
[00:26:44] I I triple-doctor you to go buy earthbound I don't I don't got that kind of money man pull up your
[00:26:50] phone god pull up your phone right now I'm scared it's so crazy how expensive earthbound is
[00:26:57] like yeah it's fucking ridiculous boxed copy of earthbound is like thousands
[00:27:02] it's that Panzer Dragon saga yeah again there's another one out of here with that
[00:27:11] yeah I've come to terms of the fact that like unless I win the lottery I'll never own those games
[00:27:15] I can tell you right now what those games are going for let's let's see we got we got any bet
[00:27:19] some what's more hey let's play a fun little game what's more expensive oh Panzer Dragon
[00:27:26] saga is absolutely more expensive than earthbound the third one will add to the mix
[00:27:32] oh it's a good one we'll throw cube of ore in there cube of ore oh my god I change my pet
[00:27:41] though I think cube of ore is more expensive okay so Panzer Dragon saga is a thousand dollars
[00:27:50] okay that's okay it complete inbox we'll go complete inbox okay okay okay earthbound is
[00:28:06] 1662 50 50 cents just thrown in there for some reason I guess her inflation fucking throw up
[00:28:14] and what was the third one show show be cube of ore cube of ore cube cube of ore it's on game cube
[00:28:26] come on cube of ore 456 62 fuck my fucking balls never mind keep a word get fucked
[00:28:37] earthbound is earthbound is like the price of a new gaming PC
[00:28:44] so you're saying if I bought that I could sell it to bug new gaming PC exactly what I'm that's
[00:28:53] but yeah that's holy fucking shit
[00:29:00] that is fucking crazy
[00:29:02] oh
[00:29:09] fucking god hey Jerry what's your next hit and gem
[00:29:14] glad you asked so look illusion of guy okay have you ever played that game
[00:29:23] a play a little bit of it yeah that's a good game it's a good ask game
[00:29:29] yeah you know what's uh it's funny because I'm actually I'm actually fucking up the bit that we've
[00:29:37] we've designed for this very episode but here we are I'm just gonna I'm gonna roll with it
[00:29:46] uh illusion a guy is the most well known of a certain franchise so it actually goes I think it's
[00:29:56] uh sold blazer or sold something sold blaster sold blazer sold blazer then it goes
[00:30:06] illusion of guy then it was Tara nigma and I did not play Tara nigma until
[00:30:15] roms and emulators came into my life because that game didn't come over here they got it in
[00:30:20] Japan and Europe only those bastards they always get the good things the Europe
[00:30:30] yeah I don't know why they didn't bring that over here like there's it's not even like
[00:30:34] it's not like a go-mongame that has like all these like weird ass suggestive
[00:30:39] fucked up things in it that they're like oh we gotta change some fucking swastikas to fucking
[00:30:44] jim's or something like there is swastikas in fucking go-mongame no fucking way
[00:30:51] yes what the fuck the little the blocks that you can like like chain pipe onto they have see
[00:30:59] the thing is I think that symbol means something else in in Japan that's why but we
[00:31:06] used to view it as a swastika but yeah it's it's like very similar to it's not like
[00:31:12] I don't know if it actually is a full one but I mean that game had other things too
[00:31:16] just even in the translation that had like some stuff that they didn't want to bring over
[00:31:20] to do with like homosexuality and stuff they were like wait we're not we're not even touching this
[00:31:25] shit um but yeah I mean at least we got uh mistkillment in just 64 and go-mongame's great adventure
[00:31:32] but everything else got fucked in the process side note though that uh that go-mongame on
[00:31:41] ps1 just got translated did I send you that one on the ps1 dude there's a bunch on the ps1 yeah
[00:31:49] I know that I thought it was just like uh and then 64 only kind of thing oh dude we're gonna
[00:31:55] have to do an episode on some go-mongames because they are so fucking good so good I mean mystical
[00:32:02] niggas good but it's just it just scratches the surface of how the other games are
[00:32:07] just just found it on cv romance there you go yep that's the one look at that shit uh sweet
[00:32:16] but I I'm supposed to be talking about taranigma which
[00:32:21] look if you're a fan of like the top-down Zelda kind of things
[00:32:25] I would say taranigma is probably one of my must-play recommendations on a on a super Nintendo
[00:32:34] because it's have you ever played it?
[00:32:37] how do yeah it's got a really fucking cool um menu system too we're like you go in the box
[00:32:43] instead of uh yeah you do go in the box and it's like these little different rooms like you have
[00:32:47] one room for equipment one room for like consumables any of like this little box where you can
[00:32:52] equip rings and shit for spells and yeah it's hard uh it's a fun and it's pretty good
[00:32:58] don't think I ever got past bloody Mary i don't think i've seen i know that the game eventually goes
[00:33:05] into like present day i know that because i've seen like screenshots and stuff but like
[00:33:10] i don't think i've ever gotten to that point because it's it's a tough game
[00:33:14] it's pretty hard pretty difficult fuck yeah um bitch but yeah it has a really cool premise where
[00:33:25] you're like kind of going through like time i think is what's going on i feel like that's yeah
[00:33:33] because like your character your character like fucks some shit up royally and kind of like
[00:33:39] he he he he undoes the fabric of time or the fabric of space or something stupid i forget
[00:33:46] and then this old dude is like oh you gotta fix it and then yeah you start off in
[00:33:54] like the one time and then you go to like the dark world or something and then well yeah
[00:34:00] I mean you believe that the weaver's village or whatever and it's like so fucked
[00:34:06] outside of that village everything i remember like that world map just tripping the shit out of
[00:34:10] me because it's like it's like fucking oh it looks so good yeah it's like all weird like it's like
[00:34:15] wrapping around in a weird way yeah it's it looks it's crazy and you gotta do that tower and shit
[00:34:21] but like the combat is really good too the combat is very similar to illusion of gaya
[00:34:26] um but i think it's it's a bit more refined than illusion of illusion of gaya is good but like
[00:34:33] i feel like tear nigma had more going for it like there's there's like more combos you can jump
[00:34:37] like you could do like the jump attack and like do like the slide thing they could do like the
[00:34:43] the dash um you could do like the thing where he spins that was like your block which was very
[00:34:49] similar to in illusion of gaya because you like spun your little flute or wherever the fuck
[00:34:54] was that you're hitting with but yeah crack pipe yeah tear nigma is a good one um again
[00:35:07] these are these are hidden gems yes but not really they're not really hidden gems but
[00:35:17] people you know what's funny though a lot of people enjoy 16 bit games but they don't know a lot
[00:35:23] about them like they don't know the the back catalog as well as you and i do
[00:35:30] there's so many people i talked to they're like i'm never gonna hurt any of these fucking games
[00:35:34] i've never heard of super mario world yeah yo she's ironed what the fuck oh
[00:35:45] oh bjad yeah there i remember talking to uh
[00:35:48] uh fuck what was it i was talking to fucking somebody at uh one of my my job back when i used
[00:35:58] to work in the office talking about like some of the best like some of the coolest games on the SNES
[00:36:03] mini when it first came out that like fucking nobody knows about like the secret of mana is popular
[00:36:09] but a lot of people haven't played that so i was trying to explain that to some friends and
[00:36:14] i was just a bunch of other ones because you could like hack the SNES many and put on there and
[00:36:20] i was telling people like do put fucking uh what you call um i already forget uh but i was
[00:36:29] giving people recommendations on like yo she safari yes can't even play it yeah
[00:36:35] yo she safari fuck it puts in virtual boy on that bitch what uh let me hit you another one how about uh
[00:36:41] uh fuck i i'm already fucking up the bit so bad um so at this point the bit doesn't even matter
[00:36:52] okay okay so at this point we're just we're just comparing hidden gems to like well known games
[00:36:59] so oh god the veil's been lifted no what could that part i will could so so
[00:37:07] so here's a real hidden gem for you shining force to uh tactics RPG on the genesis slash mega drive
[00:37:17] i guess whatever i heard that game it has a real bitch in soundtrack it does and also the fucking
[00:37:26] unlike other tactics RPGs were like exploring towns and shit is limited to just like
[00:37:33] you know like menus you know what do you think like a menu for like go to shop or like
[00:37:37] go to the fucking bar and get fucking wasted or something like stupid uh in in shining force too
[00:37:44] you actually roam around a world map and you go to towns and shit uh then the characters are all
[00:37:51] really cool they have like unique classes and stuff but what if i were to tell you there's a game
[00:37:55] kind of like that on the SNES it's uh i'm not sure how it's pronounced i think it's fita
[00:38:02] the emblem of justice fita the emblem of justice fita um
[00:38:09] fita like fita like fita fita it's uh they only came out in japan uh looks like it also got a remake on
[00:38:16] Saturn too that's cool but isn't that just uh fire emblem i always thought this game was a
[00:38:22] fire emblem game it's it's like it like shining force is basically like a fire emblem game
[00:38:28] except for that like shining force you can wander around on the world map and go into like
[00:38:33] explore towns and shit like that and there's some like secret hidden characters and stuff too
[00:38:38] that's cool it's uh but yeah fita fita is a lot like shining force yeah it's yeah your tactics battles
[00:38:47] um you've got the cool little combat sequences like shining force and fire emblem uh yeah you
[00:38:53] explore um towns and then shops and shit like that and like the overworld and all that stuff um
[00:39:01] yeah it's just a really fucking cool game and the there is uh fuck with my what i'm trying to say
[00:39:09] there is a uh an english patch out for it from the s cd romance or like rom hacking i think
[00:39:15] is the other one uh so go down on that shit and play it like you stop listening to this
[00:39:21] and go play fita just don't stop listen i'm just kidding i was kidding uh fita stop please stop
[00:39:31] fita um if you if you like that the hidden gem shining force you might like the the hit
[00:39:39] cast super famicom mega mega millions uh lottery a lotto uh RPG fita and the love justice
[00:39:49] all right uh as our war ludicrous might say
[00:39:56] i would like to draw your attention to you wouldn't believe this shit
[00:40:01] can you can you believe that at some point square soft and then tando the mother fuggers
[00:40:09] them motherfuggers got together in an elevator at one point and they were like
[00:40:13] should we make a fucking game we should just do this let's just do this and they did it
[00:40:18] they made super mario rpg now
[00:40:24] if you don't care for mario rpg because mario is in it and you just hate mario
[00:40:31] but you like you have like a little dartboard on your door with mario's picture in it and you're
[00:40:37] you're throwing fucking hatchet saturday you're like fuck you mario
[00:40:42] always taken the lady away from the fucking kupa king um fucking the uigi's cool too and he's not stupid red
[00:40:52] but maybe i'm colorblind and i can't tell the difference
[00:40:58] but jerry they have the em in the l
[00:41:01] oh but i'm also dyslexic
[00:41:06] dyslexic can't tell an em from an l they're fucking dyslexic head colorblind
[00:41:11] it's like this is your screwed bro yeah maybe lay off the video games for hot minute
[00:41:22] focus on literature and learning
[00:41:25] i mean if you're dyslexic it's hard to focus literature bro
[00:41:31] i'm sorry i'm sorry i don't mean to be calling out anybody for their fucking colorblindness
[00:41:38] you you don't know when it's christmas and shit
[00:41:47] i'm sorry to interrupt our colorblind listers
[00:41:49] um now if you do have a hard time telling the difference between mario and lewigen you really
[00:41:55] hate those two guys and you think why they make a fucking rpg with these guys like why
[00:42:02] what's the point of this there's a game though that's that's that's i would i would say
[00:42:09] might tickle your fancy it may even ding your dong and that game is none other
[00:42:14] than twisted tales of spike mcfanc do you like vampires who hasn't heard of that
[00:42:19] who hasn't heard of that i mean everybody's heard of twisted tales of spike mcfanc
[00:42:23] i totally did not find that in a bargain bin at a sears
[00:42:28] really to do yeah when i was a little kid and i remember just walking past me like oh
[00:42:34] i want to get this it's only like eleven dollars and yeah i brought it home and i was like
[00:42:41] what the fuck is this and it's kind of like it's top down kind of like
[00:42:46] i mean it's not like Zelda really like it's it's almost like
[00:42:51] you can buy like items stuff like when you kill stuff you get coins
[00:42:57] and like you can buy a different equipment to make you stronger
[00:43:00] like you uh your main attack is like a spin so you're this uh
[00:43:05] you're this little vampire kid and these um these other villains take over
[00:43:11] vampire land and you're out to stop them and everything is like
[00:43:17] like vegetables and stuff and like fruit it's like to like your health is tomatoes of all things
[00:43:24] and cool you uh yeah you spin like a little like a cape spin to attack the enemies but if you
[00:43:31] keep mashing it you like do a huge cape spin but you'd get dizzy and then you're vulnerable to
[00:43:37] attack so there's a happens to us all okay um yeah then you just gotta go go down the uh the old
[00:43:46] fridge and pop a pop a tomato real quick and yeah and you can hold the attack button and you
[00:43:55] like take your hat off because he wears like this stupid little top hat and you take that and
[00:44:01] like hover it and then you can you can throw it and that's like your rage to attack but it's
[00:44:06] it's a fucking difficult game man like really um i'm not ashamed to admit this i had to use
[00:44:13] save states to beat this game it was do you pretty difficult but do you get is it just spike the entire
[00:44:22] game or like do you get any teammates or anything like that yeah you get this other chick um at some
[00:44:27] point i vaguely remember she i think she joins you when you fight like this giant tree um which was
[00:44:36] a hell of a boss it was a crazy hard um but yeah like you don't really get any other like companions
[00:44:46] really like you don't control anybody else um and it's kind of it's not it's not a long game
[00:44:52] and it's very much like area by area like you can i think you can eventually like
[00:44:58] get in your little tour bus you little vampire tour bus and like backtrack yeah um but yeah like they
[00:45:05] spoken wrong star tour bus the cool thing about this which you'll be happy to know is that uh
[00:45:13] the game got a sequel that i can i can promise you nobody has heard of this what the fuck the game
[00:45:20] sequel was on none other than your favorite turbographic 16 and i just i think it has a translation too
[00:45:29] it's like macae print's doro boachan or something um and it was only in japan
[00:45:36] yeah it's uh it's pretty cool man it's a it's a fun fun little game that i would i would definitely
[00:45:43] recommend people who like kind of like top down action RPG type games there's not a lot of RPG to
[00:45:51] it but it's like an action actiony RPG i guess like there's you you level up and you can buy equipment
[00:45:57] and stuff but it's kind of like baby's first RPG action RPG and if you have a note to say uh super
[00:46:03] cool a trend with with my picks they're mostly action RPGs go that fucking love action RPG dude oh my
[00:46:10] god i love an action RPG oh okay so let's see yeah so so actually the the turbographics 16 game came first
[00:46:19] didn't then came this guy oh interesting but yeah it's good it's on super Nintendo and um play it
[00:46:29] anyway you can fucking kuna do it you should you got uh you got one more for me
[00:46:38] well what what what are these words i see you have written you have written down here shine
[00:46:44] magami tenisey what are these words what do they mean real hidden jams so yeah for for like the
[00:46:56] two of you that have played a shimagami tenisey game uh just like a normally well older games
[00:47:04] and like maybe some newer ones it'll be like like a first person dungeon crawl with like random
[00:47:10] encounters and you'll you'll fight demons and you can um you can talk to demons and recruit them
[00:47:17] into your party so it's got like kind of a Pokemon element to it but like you know you know
[00:47:22] almost throw up uh you do the other all ball at them jay don't throw a ball at them or just like
[00:47:29] catch them or give them their favorite food and befriend them that's a yoke i watch throwback hey
[00:47:36] yoke i watch um no uh shin magami tenisey you talk to a demon and you're like yo dog you want a
[00:47:44] fucking you want to fuck some shit up you want to try that fucking crew bro and the demon will be
[00:47:50] like fuck it you fucking know i do you got the good shit then you'll give us my favorite flavor of apple
[00:47:56] pie and you gotta like guess the right answer you're like i don't fucking know or care here's a life
[00:48:02] stone you fucking free and he's like cool dog that's fine with me uh and then yeah you can fuse
[00:48:09] demons together uh to make more powerful demons and uh they inherit skills and shit like that
[00:48:16] but there's there's a more probably more popular game that's kind of like that one
[00:48:24] that everybody's heard of it's arcana everybody it's arcana we all knew what was coming we had to
[00:48:29] talk about it the mega hit arcana snes um this one i'll have to check real fast yeah actually came
[00:48:39] out in both america and japan um so i remember the cover yeah it's got the wonkyest fucking
[00:48:48] covers just like it's fucking stevey nix with like a sword and some cards in her hand
[00:48:56] it's like a first game right yeah first person dungeon crawler
[00:49:01] and uh it's got random encounters and it's got like like a card aesthetic to it so like enemies
[00:49:10] well you know the pop up on the screen and they'll um the your teammates will be in like
[00:49:17] like there's just two of you on one side of the screen like yourself and then your first ally
[00:49:21] tifa whatever her name is tifa um yeah dude um man then you gotta bear it and the
[00:49:30] erath on the other side basically dude uh yeah the enemies show up on the screen as cards and like
[00:49:41] you're you and your teammates show up on the screen as cards and um yeah it's just like a like
[00:49:48] a turn-based RPG in a dungeon you just wander through the dungeons can they uh there's a like a map
[00:49:57] button so like the game will we'll keep track of of the map of the dungeon as you go along which is
[00:50:02] really cool which it kind of reminds me a lot of one of my favorite games ever e-tree and honestly
[00:50:07] i said the fact that e-tree and i see you get to fucking customize your characters and synergize a
[00:50:13] lot more but uh yeah arcana's pretty fucking cool like there's uh uh what like uh the town
[00:50:22] exploration is kind of cool because that's also done in like first person so you'll go you're like
[00:50:27] start off in like your house or something and then you'll you'll push forward to go out and then
[00:50:31] you'll like look around and go to different areas and talk to people and um learn a little hints about
[00:50:36] the game world and different uh different mechanics and if if you're not careful you could skip right
[00:50:45] past your first uh your first teammate which is like a healer check and yeah it's pretty fucking cool
[00:50:52] cool game hell yeah it's it's been a long time since i've laid eyes on this game i might have to
[00:50:58] throw it on to see i i i may have been turned off from it because of the card aesthetic
[00:51:04] because there's only been recently that i've actually been into anything to do with cards
[00:51:10] which is wild i know that's blasphemy for you that's
[00:51:13] it is your your fucking dead to me but like that's the blockass over
[00:51:18] oh
[00:51:20] virtual rehab is fucking done second and last fucking episode
[00:51:26] but other than like the characters showing up as cards that's it that's that's all the rest of
[00:51:30] the card aesthetic because like everything else in the combat and shit is is menu based and
[00:51:35] so it's like a type of drug quest really yeah so it's just like okay uh i'm sure you could
[00:51:42] be quite Google a screenshot yeah i'd be like your your menu pops up for certain characters like
[00:51:46] attack magic and you can like change weapons or like retreat or whatever um yeah hell yeah
[00:51:54] check it out check it out everybody i mean we already know you check that out
[00:51:59] yeah that's the mega mega smash superlato uh flint michigan head the
[00:52:06] the flint michigan oh he just shook on flint michigan is there water good yet flint
[00:52:11] michigan whoops i will spell it my sh flint michigan
[00:52:17] fuck me man i can't type water status is there water good hold on everybody
[00:52:24] i don't know what this means as of December 2022 flint michigan's water has nine parts per billion
[00:52:30] or ppb of lead uh that sounds good i feel like 15 i feel like any bit of lead is not good
[00:52:39] i know apparently it's below the federal standard of 15 though so it's it's it's it's
[00:52:46] drankable you can drink some flint michigan water you fucking turn so yeah any any any of you guys
[00:52:53] obviously have played god growth or de-evolution fetia emblem of justice and arcana obviously
[00:53:02] everybody's playing those nope you know those are those aren't the hidden gems okay the real hidden
[00:53:07] gems here are earthbound shining force two and shimmy gumma ten say obviously yes same with mine
[00:53:12] yeah i mean everybody's heard of secret of evermore terror neguens especially twisted tails of spike
[00:53:20] i like how like how the whole thing was 16 bit RPGs and there's only one genesis RPG
[00:53:28] was there is it didn't have i mean yeah there's fantasy star
[00:53:33] i but dude uh my buddy had just recently played i think fantasy's i want to say four maybe
[00:53:41] and he said it like it's a wild time yeah it's pretty fucking good yep and the soundtrack is
[00:53:49] pretty pretty good because it's got that grimy genesis soundtrack which is great
[00:53:56] yeah harsh you harsh fucking since
[00:54:02] Trent Trent Resonore's dick is so fucking hard listening to that soundtrack dude i fucking bet he's
[00:54:09] just he's cranking it real hard me listen to the fantasy star four sound chuck he's like oh my

[00:57:15] this is uh yeah this probably should have been like our fourth episode right now but uh hey what can
[00:57:22] you do when you're sick and you got uh you got the family showing up and you're just so fucking sick
[00:57:28] and tired of them just sitting around your house you know you know what you need palcom pont
[00:57:36] they've got your passed out like nearly lifeless like flu corpse flailing around at the water part
[00:57:43] because like you're sick and you're tired of this one to go to the fucking water park we can have
[00:57:47] bernies well in uh in our closing we always like to recommend a random game that we uh we feel is
[00:57:59] you know it doesn't necessarily have to be on topic or anything but uh this is just like a
[00:58:04] little treat for the listener you know that's uh hey you know what we stand by these games
[00:58:10] and we absolutely think you should play them or suffer the consequences
[00:58:18] you're the falcon punch the penis oh I was so short
[00:58:29] I've never not like it
[00:58:33] uh so Aaron what can you recommend the listeners as we part ways this time
[00:58:42] if there's any any party words I want to give to you listeners go play wetrix
[00:58:46] There's a version on N64, on a Game Boy color, one on Dreamcast.
[00:58:54] The Dreamcast one is probably the best.
[00:58:56] It plays super smooth and it's got some extra modes and stuff like that.
[00:59:01] But Wetrix is like, it's a puzzle game where you start off with like a flat plane and
[00:59:08] you're basically like race up different pieces of the land because you want to hold as much
[00:59:13] water as possible.
[00:59:15] Because every so often the game will give you like a race land thing and then like a
[00:59:20] ball of water to just fill with water or like a flaming ball to like dry up water and stuff
[00:59:26] like that.
[00:59:27] I remember this game.
[00:59:28] It's weird.
[00:59:29] Yeah, it's weird to explain.
[00:59:31] Yeah, it's fucking awesome.
[00:59:33] Yeah, but whether you can get either at the N64 or the Dreamcast version, those are
[00:59:38] the two best ones.
[00:59:39] Dreamcast is for sure the best one.
[00:59:40] Wetrix Plus on the Dreamcast.
[00:59:43] Hell yeah.
[00:59:44] Good to see a Dreamcast game, recommend.
[00:59:47] Recommendated.
[00:59:48] Yeah.
[00:59:49] Shout out to our last episode when I good stuff saying recommendated.
[00:59:54] Well, my parting gift to the listeners today.
[01:00:00] Look, it's no secret.
[01:00:04] I'm a Mega Man man.
[01:00:06] Okay?
[01:00:07] I'm a Mega Man man.
[01:00:10] One thing that I not know existed was Mega Man Extreme.
[01:00:13] I mean, I knew it existed, but I just didn't know what it was.
[01:00:17] And Mega Man Extreme is basically eight bit Mega Man X, but there's a catch.
[01:00:24] It's not just a remake of Mega Man X.
[01:00:28] There's actually like a story to it where like Mega Man is in like a simulation and there's
[01:00:34] bosses from not just Mega Man X one.
[01:00:37] There's like other bosses from Mega Man X one to three.
[01:00:40] Like it's really different and dude, it is fucking tough.
[01:00:45] Like it is hard.
[01:00:46] Dude, I couldn't even beat Jill Penguin.
[01:00:48] Couldn't do it.
[01:00:50] Couldn't beat Jill Penguin.
[01:00:52] First try.
[01:00:53] I'm like, is this am I taking crazy pills right now?
[01:00:55] Like Jill Penguin.
[01:00:56] Like as soon as I see him show up on the screen, I'm like, I'm beating this guy's ass.
[01:01:01] Like Jill Penguin.
[01:01:02] You don't stand a chance.
[01:01:04] It's always my go to like first guy that I go to in Mega Man X obviously because well,
[01:01:09] you get the boots and stuff there too.
[01:01:11] And he's just like not a hard boss.
[01:01:14] This motherfucker steps it up in Mega Man Extreme.
[01:01:17] And then once you beat the game, then you unlock hard mode which is essentially just a continuation
[01:01:25] of the game.
[01:01:26] Like literally like the story continues.
[01:01:29] And then there's more fucking mavericks like from other Mega Man X games.
[01:01:34] Like it just keeps going.
[01:01:35] It's like cool.
[01:01:36] It's like Mega Man X, like I don't know, greatest hits kind of thing.
[01:01:41] It's cool.
[01:01:42] It's really cool.
[01:01:43] XXX.
[01:01:44] And that's on the Game Boy color.
[01:01:48] So you can check that out.
[01:01:50] I don't know if that's on like any of the virtual consoles or not but god damn it, it should
[01:01:54] be.
[01:01:56] I think yeah, it was for sure on the 3DS one.
[01:01:59] Was it?
[01:02:00] Yeah, 3DS was the first Nintendo console they brought Game Boy and Game Boy color virtual
[01:02:07] console too.
[01:02:08] It was for sure on the 3DS.
[01:02:09] I mean, okay.
[01:02:10] Yeah.
[01:02:11] You know what, before we go, I'm going to hit up Wikipedia for the random article button
[01:02:17] and we'll see what we get.
[01:02:20] Michael J.E.
[01:02:21] Boy, American screen composer, orchestrator and multi instrumentalist.
[01:02:25] Is he dead?
[01:02:26] He's dead.
[01:02:27] Wait, wait, no, nobody's not.
[01:02:32] He's not actually.
[01:02:33] No, he's not.
[01:02:34] He's 62.
[01:02:38] Shout out to Ludacris Michael J.E.
[01:02:42] Boy and Michael J.E.
[01:02:43] Boy, all these guys are just out living themselves somehow.
[01:02:51] Good on Michael J.E.
[01:02:52] Boy.
[01:02:53] You too, Ludacris.
[01:02:54] Michael J.E. Boy, like the hidden gem because Michael J.Fox is the obvious one.
[01:03:01] Oh, I guess that's true.
[01:03:03] Yeah, yeah, Michael J.E. Boy is like the hidden gem of Michael J.E.
[01:03:08] He's the secret of he's the secret of mono Michael J.E.
[01:03:13] Oh shit.
[01:03:15] Perfect.
[01:03:16] Perfect.
[01:03:17] And with that, you know what, Aaron, why don't you take us out of here with, uh,
[01:03:24] with some, with some plugs and some device.
[01:03:28] Oh yeah, cool.
[01:03:30] Listen to fucking super podcast.

[01:04:07] Yeah, Friday, Friday, Friday, Friday.
[01:04:08] Gotta get down on Friday.
[01:04:11] Um, all right.
[01:04:15] Uh, well, take us out of here, Aaron.
[01:04:18] You know what?
[01:04:19] Well, think of listening, getting in some art and art with us today.
[01:04:23] In the meantime, Jerry needs to continue his catalog of every single monkey video game
[01:04:30] character.
[01:04:31] That's, I mean, it hits a little close to home because Greg and Beth always ridicule me
[01:04:36] for my obsession with caveman games.
[01:04:38] So it kind of checks out.
[01:04:42] Uh, also in the meantime, Aaron is going to stop making mukbang videos with Kirby.
[01:04:49] I can't help a man.
[01:04:51] I just, I love Wendy's way too much.
[01:04:54] Can't, can't not do it.
