[00:00:05] The following is a GNC Podcast Production, Pop Culture Podcast.

[00:00:41] Hello and welcome to Geek Addicts, the pop culture podcast where we talk about all the different ways we can psychologically break people for cheating at games.

[00:00:48] My name is Matt, with me my co-host who's been asleep for 5,000 years, Bill Barber. How's it going Bill?

[00:00:54] I wish I could sleep for 5,000 years, I'm so tired all the time lately.

[00:00:58] Tell me about it, I'm fucking lucky to get six hours on any given night.

[00:01:02] Yeah.

[00:01:04] Yeah, yeah. So how's the week been for you Bill?

[00:01:09] Um, busy. That's the best way I can explain it.

[00:01:13] Um, I finally gave in, turned the heat on, so that's a new thing.

[00:01:19] Yeah, we did the same, but we also got another cord of wood in, so we're up to about three-ish cords.

[00:01:28] So we're up more, most of it, I think a little bit more, and we'll, we should be good for, for the winter, so.

[00:01:35] That's good.

[00:01:36] Yeah, it's been, it's crazy too, because apparently next week it's going to be in the 70s all week, so.

[00:01:41] New England weather for you.

[00:01:43] Yeah.

[00:01:43] Yeah.

[00:01:44] It makes sense up here. I mean, we have, we get lucky and we don't have all of like the natural disasters, like we don't have tornadoes or like hurricanes that often up here, but like, we just have like the most random weather, I think ever.

[00:01:57] No, but we get nor'easters and those, those are nothing to shake a stick at. I should know.

[00:02:02] Yeah.

[00:02:04] Fucking nor'easters would fuck us up.

[00:02:06] Yeah.

[00:02:07] The sad part is we're just so like used to them though, that like whenever they come through, it's just kind of like, eh, it happened.

[00:02:12] Yeah, but everyone in my house is like so scarred by the sound of the winds.

[00:02:16] I know.

[00:02:16] Like every time we hear it, we all get like PTSD flashbacks, I swear to God.

[00:02:21] That's everyone in the house cringes whenever the wind starts gusting.

[00:02:25] That's like the one thing that I've noticed down here in Connecticut to post a mass is like all the trees have been like taken care of.

[00:02:31] So like there's the few that there is, I like are monitored so they don't fall during like the storms.

[00:02:37] It's, it's crazy.

[00:02:39] Cause I remember up in a, when I was still living at home, I think every snowstorm, it was like, there was like an 80% chance we were going to lose power because a tree was going to go down on the lines.

[00:02:48] Yeah.

[00:02:49] Yeah.

[00:02:49] Well, it also depends on what neighborhood you live in.

[00:02:51] Cause I remember like when I lived at my mom's house, like for some reason, the grid she was on and just where we were like, like, I guess topographically, cause we were like higher up than a lot of other places around us.

[00:03:02] Um, for some, we like very rarely ever lost power.

[00:03:06] Like everyone around us will have lost power and we'd be fine.

[00:03:09] And even when we did, we had a generator.

[00:03:11] So it wasn't a big deal.

[00:03:12] Hmm.

[00:03:14] I've yet to lose power for more than like a minute up, uh, down here.

[00:03:18] Like, I think like most of the time it'll like flicker for maybe like a second and then it will come back.

[00:03:22] Um, I think, I think it's happened once since Francis was born.

[00:03:26] Hmm.

[00:03:27] Yeah. Cause I know back, uh, back home, like there was like points where it'd be out for like a week and it'd be like, what the hell?

[00:03:35] Yeah.

[00:03:36] There was, there was a couple of bad ones.

[00:03:37] It was usually during like the heavy snow falls, but we haven't really had heavy snow in a while.

[00:03:44] The worst one I can think of was this was back in 20.

[00:03:52] I want to say 2011.

[00:03:54] It was right at the end of summer.

[00:03:56] We had this like massive hurricane came through and it just like annihilated, like pretty much all the power lines, like storms and stuff.

[00:04:05] Like we had no power for like two weeks straight.

[00:04:11] Um, and I remember this because it was, it literally coincided with the start of the school year going into junior year of high school.

[00:04:18] So I had no power, no ability to, uh, bathe.

[00:04:26] I had to bathe in a fucking pool out in the backyard with a hose.

[00:04:30] That was wonderful.

[00:04:31] Um, at least it was summer or like late summer.

[00:04:36] Yeah, it still wasn't.

[00:04:38] It was ice cold hose water, which I'm amazed that even worked because we had well, so like it was.

[00:04:45] Oh, you had water too.

[00:04:46] I didn't even have a hose.

[00:04:48] I was using a water bottle.

[00:04:49] It was even worse.

[00:04:50] Like it was bad.

[00:04:54] Like, thank God, like being a dude, you can get away with a couple of days, but, um, yeah.

[00:05:00] Oh yeah.

[00:05:01] Cause I remember, uh, my mom and Alex, they would get up at like one in the morning to go drive like five towns over to go use like one of the showers at my mom's work because that was like just the only option.

[00:05:13] It was bad.

[00:05:14] Like, yikes.

[00:05:15] I still remember I got in an argument with my English teacher because this was during the era of schools where they were like, everything has to be done online now.

[00:05:25] Like you can't just do anything paid pen and paper anymore.

[00:05:29] And I didn't do any of the work cause I had no power.

[00:05:32] And I'll, one of my favorite arguments with my teacher, because she had no response to this was she, she had asked me why I didn't just go to the library and do it.

[00:05:40] And I looked at her in the face and said, I'm not going to pay money to do homework.

[00:05:43] Are you fucking stupid?

[00:05:47] Like I gave her this, like, I just, I looked at her dead in the face and she like wanted to argue back.

[00:05:53] But like, realistically, like, what was she going to say?

[00:05:56] Yeah.

[00:05:56] I'd be like, are you going to, are you going to pay for me to do it?

[00:05:58] Like, yeah.

[00:05:59] I was just like, I'm in high school.

[00:06:00] How much disposable cash do you think I have?

[00:06:03] Yeah.

[00:06:04] And I also, she also like tried to argue, well, you could use the school computers.

[00:06:07] I'm like, yeah, but I don't have a fucking ride because the late bus at the time didn't go back to our fucking neighborhood.

[00:06:14] Cause it was, cause I went to a multi town school and my parents had to work.

[00:06:19] So how was I going to get home and stuff like that?

[00:06:23] Believe it or not, computers don't solve everything.

[00:06:26] Yeah, no, it was a disaster and they didn't understand because we were also a multi town school.

[00:06:30] It was only the people from my town that didn't, that were suffering from no power.

[00:06:35] Um, yeah, I think, I think that was one of the last grades in my school.

[00:06:39] That was like strictly pen and paper.

[00:06:42] Yeah.

[00:06:42] We were for the most part, we had a few random teachers that were like gung ho about this technology shit.

[00:06:47] And I was like, this sucks.

[00:06:49] Like, I mean, they, they used like, um, like the new fangled, like projectors and stuff like that, like in the classroom.

[00:06:56] But as far as like, you know, take home work, it was all, it was all paper, which I appreciated.

[00:07:02] I mean, to be fair, I didn't do homework once my last like two years of high school, but.

[00:07:07] Yeah, I wasn't very good about doing it.

[00:07:08] Even when I was trying to do better in school, I still wasn't very good about homework.

[00:07:12] Well, most of my teachers were made it very apparent that homework was meaningless.

[00:07:18] So I would just do, I would either bullshit it or I would do it like 20 minutes before class started and just be like, whatever.

[00:07:25] I would just do it in class, at least for the classes that would give it out like early and be like, oh, like halfway through the class, like this is your homework.

[00:07:32] And I either do it in that class or I do it in the next class before I get that classes homework.

[00:07:37] Yeah. Well, some teachers tried to be smart about it and they'd be like, well, you have to show your work.

[00:07:41] And I'm like, all right. So I just write full, I just wrote like absolute nonsense.

[00:07:45] And I was like, there's my work. How does it make sense?

[00:07:48] I don't know. Fucking math doesn't make sense.

[00:07:51] So.

[00:07:52] Yeah, I did it right in front of you. You didn't see a calculator, did you?

[00:07:54] Yeah.

[00:07:55] Well, we were in the calculator generation where like by then I, my favorite part about our generation of school was we started out in that generation where like they were like anti everything.

[00:08:07] And then by the time we finished, they were transitioning into like everything was like given to you.

[00:08:13] Hmm.

[00:08:14] We were growing up. We were growing up. There was still like a period of time where all the adults thought the whole Internet computer revolution was just a fad and it was going to fade out eventually.

[00:08:25] Well, we also we had that and we also then had like some of the crazy like they thought technology was going to be way more advanced than it ended up being.

[00:08:31] It's like I remember.

[00:08:34] I was through that really awful period of time where like they weren't teaching us certain things because they assumed it wasn't going to matter in the future.

[00:08:42] Like my favorite was.

[00:08:44] They skipped handwriting because they assumed everything was going to be typed.

[00:08:48] And then but they only would teach us cursive because they thought everything was going to be written in cursive.

[00:08:53] Yeah, I remember that. Yeah, I really pushed the cursive.

[00:08:57] They also neglected to teach us how to tell time because they assumed everything was going to be digital in the future.

[00:09:04] Well, like it was such a weird backwards way of thinking, especially considering you look at it now and you're like, wow, I never like that didn't happen.

[00:09:13] I was lucky in that regard because they pushed that by like first grade.

[00:09:16] You're like, no, you got to learn that you had to learn the analog clock.

[00:09:19] Like, yeah, I figured out the analog clock by just staring at it for a good amount of time and eventually just kind of figuring it out.

[00:09:26] Like, I mean, considering all the clocks in the school were that like all the way through school, like, yeah, such a weird time.

[00:09:35] I mean, I don't know what kids go through nowadays because I'm sure they have to deal with all sorts of other weird shit.

[00:09:40] I mean, granted, the biggest thing we had to learn was like, don't trust anyone on the Internet.

[00:09:44] Like, don't make friends on the Internet and like surprise, surprise.

[00:09:47] That's how everyone makes friends now.

[00:09:49] Yeah.

[00:09:51] It was wild to me is like the whole like push for for like, like technological, like tools and stuff for teaching in school and whatnot.

[00:10:02] Like Xander's backpack is like way heavier than any backpack I had in school.

[00:10:09] Which is like really bizarre, because like all of us, almost all of his homework is on the computer.

[00:10:14] So it's like, what what is all this stuff?

[00:10:16] Like, why are they giving you all this shit?

[00:10:17] Why do you need to lug this around?

[00:10:19] Do they make any sense?

[00:10:20] Do they still have the big ass textbooks or is that are they beyond that now?

[00:10:25] I've never seen him with a textbook, so I couldn't tell you.

[00:10:27] Okay.

[00:10:28] Yeah, because I remember our big thing was we just had the fucking giant textbooks that weighed like 5000 pounds.

[00:10:34] Well, that's what I'm saying is like I've never seen the kid with a textbook, but his backpack weighs like 1000 pounds.

[00:10:39] I still remember like a teacher would always like whenever we'd complain about the textbooks and how much they weighed.

[00:10:45] They'd either like give us this like, oh, you can just read them online.

[00:10:48] It's like, yeah, but not everyone has computers at this point.

[00:10:51] Like it doesn't always work.

[00:10:53] And how are we supposed to have them in class?

[00:10:56] But then also like they'd be like, oh, they're not that heavy.

[00:10:58] And I'm like literally like sitting here like my sister broke a fucking rib from the backpacks being too heavy.

[00:11:03] I just want to point that out.

[00:11:06] Like that happened.

[00:11:07] I remember I had to like carry Alex's books for like a week because she couldn't walk like that was bad.

[00:11:14] It's freaking wild.

[00:11:15] Yeah, I don't miss school at all.

[00:11:17] Like I'll never understand the people are like I miss school.

[00:11:19] That was a fun time of my life.

[00:11:21] Like, no, I don't miss that at all.

[00:11:23] I mean, if I could go back in time to like that, that point in my life with all my knowledge and experience and redo it the smart way, then yeah, I but if I had to like go back and just kind of blink and all the years between have just disappeared.

[00:11:39] And I am myself from them.

[00:11:42] No, not a million years.

[00:11:44] No, no, I prefer.

[00:11:46] I much prefer post high school life.

[00:11:49] Yeah, for sure.

[00:11:50] Like, like the good like five years or so after graduated like that was like the golden years right there.

[00:11:58] See, not quite for me because I was working night shift, but.

[00:12:02] That's fair.

[00:12:03] I know I do.

[00:12:04] I do miss a lot of.

[00:12:06] I mean, I missed that point where I didn't have a lot of responsibility and it was the pay, but that's part of growing up.

[00:12:14] Yeah.

[00:12:15] I mean, I think that this week, I have watched some more anime.

[00:12:21] I have finally got around to watching do rah rah rah 2, which was really interesting.

[00:12:28] I really like the series.

[00:12:31] Um, I believe I mentioned before it's the same author who wrote Baccano.

[00:12:35] You know, and it has a lot of like the DNA of Baccano in it, like with a big ensemble cast and.

[00:12:41] Um, but it's modern day Japan and instead of like, like multiple stories.

[00:12:49] Taking place over multiple years, it's all like happening at the same time, like in and you will jump perspectives to different characters and stuff, but it's all one big story with numerous branches.

[00:13:02] Mm hmm.

[00:13:03] So I really like the way it works in that regard.

[00:13:06] It's a very fun series.

[00:13:08] And there are, there are a few references to Baccano where it is definitely in the same universe.

[00:13:13] Hmm.

[00:13:15] Yeah, I didn't, I haven't done a lot of anime this week.

[00:13:17] I mean, this was more of a reading week for me, uh, between comics and manga.

[00:13:21] I was just catching up on some stuff.

[00:13:23] Um, sometimes you just need a break.

[00:13:26] Um, last thing I watched was I finished Italia X powers.

[00:13:30] Um, the first season or the whole thing?

[00:13:33] Just, uh, just access powers for now.

[00:13:36] Gotcha.

[00:13:36] Yeah.

[00:13:36] Yeah.

[00:13:37] I went through the whole thing.

[00:13:38] It was, it's such a quick watch anyway.

[00:13:40] It's so easy to just kind of have on while you're doing other stuff.

[00:13:44] Yeah.

[00:13:44] That, that show is so like, that could never get away with that one nowadays.

[00:13:49] It's chaos.

[00:13:50] The anime.

[00:13:51] Oh yeah.

[00:13:51] There's so much like, like what you have to put into context whenever you watch the show that this is Japan and Japan don't give a fuck because my God, they're the amount of fucking racist shit that goes in that show.

[00:14:05] I'm like, holy.

[00:14:06] There's also, it was also a good few years ago too, because there's this whole like subplot between Russia and Ukraine about how they're like, love each other so much.

[00:14:14] It's just like, wow, that age is very poorly.

[00:14:18] I just, I couldn't get past the fact that Ukraine's characterization is basically just a girl with giant tits and they make bongo sounds whenever she walks around.

[00:14:27] Yeah.

[00:14:28] Well, there always has to be one, right?

[00:14:31] I was just like, what the fuck does this have to do with Ukraine?

[00:14:34] But okay.

[00:14:37] Um, but yeah, I finished that up, uh, last week.

[00:14:41] I watched Daraara 2 this week and, uh, I had another day of, of anime watching to, to do.

[00:14:48] So I ended up, uh, starting don't toy with me miss Nagatoro.

[00:14:54] Oh, what'd you think of that?

[00:14:55] Wow.

[00:14:57] Oh, I mean the whole thing really.

[00:14:59] I mean, it's, I mean the, the first episode is rough, but it gets, it gets a lot better after that.

[00:15:05] It does.

[00:15:06] But like, it's like Stockholm syndrome, the anime.

[00:15:11] It gets, it gets better.

[00:15:13] It's very rough at first.

[00:15:14] Well, I'm like, I'm halfway through the second season right now.

[00:15:17] And it's still like, yeah, it's where at the beginning it's like, like just straight up gaslighting.

[00:15:23] And then by like towards where I'm at now, it's like, she has like reverse Stockholm syndrome and now she likes him.

[00:15:31] Like, I don't know.

[00:15:32] It's weird.

[00:15:33] The, I won't spoil anything cause I've read more of the manga, but I think the implication is she's always liked him.

[00:15:39] It's just, it's, it's one of those situations where this is just girls are complicated.

[00:15:44] I feel like it's one of those things where she's just trying to like poke him into being more assertive, but.

[00:15:49] Yeah.

[00:15:50] There's a lot of interpretations on how to view that show is weirdly complicated for what it, especially considering it was the, the artist behind that manga.

[00:16:01] It was mostly known for porn.

[00:16:04] Some very fucked up porn.

[00:16:07] Yeah.

[00:16:08] Don't don't have it for anyone who's a fan of that show.

[00:16:11] Don't ever look up Nana.

[00:16:12] She's back background stuff.

[00:16:14] It's wow.

[00:16:17] Yeah.

[00:16:18] Yeah.

[00:16:19] Yeah.

[00:16:21] Yeah.

[00:16:22] Yeah.

[00:16:22] Fun thing about that show though, is like if the role, if the roles were reversed and Nagator was a male character and Senpai was a female character.

[00:16:31] Oh my God.

[00:16:33] That show would not be taken seriously at all.

[00:16:36] Like, holy shit.

[00:16:38] Yeah.

[00:16:39] It's funny how like, you know, changing just like one detail like that can completely change the context of a series.

[00:16:45] Well, it's funny if that was an American show.

[00:16:47] I don't think it would have made it past like a couple episodes because it is such that first episode is fucking rough.

[00:16:53] It's even worse than the manga.

[00:16:55] Well, there's the, there's just some things like, like, like, like you, you just can't break out of that medium.

[00:17:03] Hmm.

[00:17:04] You know, like, that's why like when I, when I heard that Kaguya-sama had a live action adaptation, like I just don't see how that would work in live action.

[00:17:11] This shit, the series is too animated.

[00:17:13] It would, it would either suffer because they're trying too hard to make it like the anime and it would be unrealistic or they would try to go the more realistic route and it would suffer because like the characters wouldn't be as vibrant as they are in the anime.

[00:17:26] You know what I mean?

[00:17:27] Yeah.

[00:17:28] So I feel like there's just some things that you just can't have any other medium.

[00:17:32] It has to be anime or can't exist.

[00:17:37] Yeah, honestly, it's.

[00:17:41] That manga is done though.

[00:17:43] So realistically, they, it should get a third season at some point.

[00:17:48] Hmm.

[00:17:49] Speaking of anime though, I watched the second seat, the second episode of Daima yesterday.

[00:17:54] Holy crap.

[00:17:54] They are dropping so much lore, so much lore just in those first two episodes.

[00:18:02] Like completely out of nowhere.

[00:18:05] Early mid November is when the dev will be coming.

[00:18:09] Are you going to be watching it week to week?

[00:18:10] Are you going to wait until it's done to binge watch it?

[00:18:14] I'll see how I'll see what I'm doing when that, when it comes out.

[00:18:17] If I'm not doing much, I might, I might do it like I did with slime and week to week, watch it.

[00:18:22] Cause well, I mean, it is kind of an experience to like watching it week to week and like being with Dragon Ball specifically, you know, and apparently this season's only going to, or this series is only going to be like 20 episodes.

[00:18:35] At least that's all that's planned right now.

[00:18:37] I don't know if it's going to, if it's supposed to go further than that, but as, as of right now, as far as release dates go, they only have up to 20.

[00:18:45] 20 episodes, uh, scheduled.

[00:18:47] So I think it depends on how well it does.

[00:18:49] Honestly.

[00:18:51] I mean, I'm, I'm liking what I'm seeing so far.

[00:18:53] It looks fucking gorgeous.

[00:18:54] I can tell you that much.

[00:18:57] Also, I guess, um, the, the, the character that's going to be like essentially doing like the call to action for them all to go to the demon realm.

[00:19:06] Apparently the English, uh, voice actor who's going to be playing him is, uh, Aaron Dismue.

[00:19:12] Oh, cool.

[00:19:12] So it's going to be the president.

[00:19:13] Good.

[00:19:14] Yeah.

[00:19:15] He's going to play a blue guy from the demon realm.

[00:19:18] Who has a gun.

[00:19:20] Nice.

[00:19:21] Yeah.

[00:19:21] It'd be fun.

[00:19:24] Oh yeah.

[00:19:25] That'll be interesting.

[00:19:26] It's going to be weird.

[00:19:27] Cause we're going to have like two separate continuities going on, but yeah, that's dragging a ball for you.

[00:19:33] Oh, who knows?

[00:19:34] Maybe by the end it'll wrap up in a way that, uh, ties it in with super.

[00:19:38] It just becomes super all of a sudden.

[00:19:41] Uh, who knows?

[00:19:43] Who knows?

[00:19:44] At this point, like, or it'll be by the time Dime is, huh?

[00:19:49] I said, or it'll be like GT and they'd be like, it's just over here.

[00:19:53] It exists there.

[00:19:55] It's possible.

[00:19:56] Um, I think at this point though, by the time Dime is finished, I think they will have pretty much filled up.

[00:20:02] Filled in the entire 10 years between Boo and Oob.

[00:20:08] Like, I think we'll have one more arc in a super that'll like get through that.

[00:20:13] And then that, that full 10 year time skip from the end of Z will, we'll have filled up that whole bit.

[00:20:20] Yeah.

[00:20:20] And then we'll see how they try to connect them together.

[00:20:23] If they even do well, cause for all we know, super is still an alternate universe and it'll, it might change everything.

[00:20:29] We'll see.

[00:20:30] I mean, like I said, though, they did change some stuff around at the beginning of Dime.

[00:20:35] Oh, that might make it not able to exist in the same universe as super.

[00:20:39] So we'll see what happens.

[00:20:41] Yeah.

[00:20:42] And we can't even say Toriyama forgot anymore.

[00:20:44] It's really sad.

[00:20:46] Well, to be fair, he, he, he went over all the scripts for this show.

[00:20:51] True.

[00:20:51] He gave, he gave a, a much more thorough outline of this show than he did for anything else.

[00:20:57] And then when they finished writing this, when Toei finished writing the scripts, they gave them to him and he had to approve them.

[00:21:02] So this has, this has the most Toriyama in and out of any other Dragon Ball anime that's come out since Z.

[00:21:11] True.

[00:21:13] Well, we'll have to wait and see on that.

[00:21:16] I'm excited.

[00:21:17] I will, I will refrain from telling you too much because I want you to be able to experience it, but I'm also very excited to talk about it.

[00:21:27] I'm sure it'll be a better experience than the Inuyasha fans got.

[00:21:31] So.

[00:21:32] It was fair.

[00:21:35] God, we'll have to cover Yashime at some time just so he can go through that wonderful experience.

[00:21:42] Sure.

[00:21:43] Well, next, next year I'm planning for as far as anime watching goes, I'm planning on doing like more of the longer series, like whether they're rewatches or some of the newer ones that I still haven't watched like Demon Slayer and my hero and stuff.

[00:21:58] Hmm.

[00:22:00] So that's, that's what next year is going to be.

[00:22:02] It's going to be the big haul trying to get through all the bigger shows that I've neglected.

[00:22:07] And rewatching some that I haven't seen in a long time, like Inuyasha.

[00:22:11] Yeah, I gotcha.

[00:22:14] But, um, yeah, I guess we should probably transition into our topic though for this episode.

[00:22:19] I think we've waffled on enough.

[00:22:21] Alex hates when I say waffle.

[00:22:22] So I'm going to just keep saying it now.

[00:22:24] Um, hey, it works.

[00:22:25] I like it.

[00:22:27] So I am a, I am a, a definite, definite waffle Stan over, over pancakes.

[00:22:32] And while I think, while I think French toast is the superior breakfast food, I feel like waffle is a much more, uh, acceptable breakfast food for daily consumption.

[00:22:42] So, yeah, I mean, I'm definitely on team French toast.

[00:22:46] Yeah.

[00:22:46] French toast is special occasion food.

[00:22:50] Um, I don't know how to start.

[00:22:53] So, so we're, um, we're doing, um, I throw you off a little bit.

[00:22:58] I wanted to try to throw a dig at Alex.

[00:23:01] A friendly dig, I should say.

[00:23:03] Um, cause last night she was like waffling.

[00:23:05] I hate when you say that.

[00:23:06] And I was like, oh good.

[00:23:07] I'm going to keep saying it then.

[00:23:09] That's okay.

[00:23:10] You can, you can dig on her all you want.

[00:23:11] I doubt she listens to the show.

[00:23:13] Well, she didn't realize that the, the anniversary special is like a couple weeks out at the time of this recording.

[00:23:19] Um, cause she's trying, she was scrubbing through the most recent episode just cause she wants to see the questions.

[00:23:26] Um, and she couldn't find them.

[00:23:28] And I was like, oh, that's cause it's not out yet.

[00:23:29] She's like, what?

[00:23:31] I was like, yeah.

[00:23:32] Yeah, no, we're like a month ahead.

[00:23:35] Yeah.

[00:23:35] I think it's first week in November, but, um, that being said, let's get to our topic.

[00:23:43] Uh, we're doing manga, manga retrospective.

[00:23:46] Uh, yeah.

[00:23:47] The, the Yu-Gi-Oh!

[00:23:48] Manga.

[00:23:50] Oh boy.

[00:23:51] The first seven volumes that the pre-dual monsters manga of Yu-Gi-Oh!

[00:23:57] The stuff that makes the anime makes so much more fucking sense.

[00:24:01] Like, holy shit.

[00:24:02] Like.

[00:24:03] Oh yeah.

[00:24:04] When they, when they.

[00:24:05] So much.

[00:24:06] When people always say like the, the start of the Yu-Gi-Oh!

[00:24:10] Anime.

[00:24:10] Uh, the, the one that everyone knows.

[00:24:13] Was.

[00:24:14] Kind of butchered.

[00:24:15] Um, yeah, they were right.

[00:24:16] Cause holy fuck.

[00:24:18] Like there's a lot of shit that just gets cut out.

[00:24:21] This is why I always say like, if somebody is like.

[00:24:24] If somebody is fine with watching subs, definitely watch season zero because a lot of the stuff that, that we're covering here in the manga.

[00:24:31] Like a lot of that was adapted into, into season zero.

[00:24:35] Yes.

[00:24:36] And, um, I guess we should start with a little bit of backstory.

[00:24:40] The Yu-Gi-Oh!

[00:24:40] Manga started in 1996.

[00:24:43] So year after I was born.

[00:24:45] Um.

[00:24:48] And it ran all the way up until 2004, 38 volumes.

[00:24:52] So it actually ran for a lot longer than I thought it did.

[00:24:55] Oh, the manga was already done by 2004?

[00:24:57] I didn't realize that.

[00:24:59] Yeah.

[00:24:59] It finished, uh, March 8th, 2004.

[00:25:02] Um, and it was written by the late, uh, Kazuki Akihashi.

[00:25:08] Um, who actually passed away, um, only a couple of years ago.

[00:25:13] Um, yeah, I think it was shortly, I think it was shortly after Kentaro Miura passed away.

[00:25:19] Yeah.

[00:25:20] And he, his death was like bizarre.

[00:25:21] Cause I think he was actually saving a bunch of people like who were like drowning.

[00:25:27] It was weird.

[00:25:28] It was just one of those things where it was like, wow.

[00:25:30] It's like this, like things you don't expect.

[00:25:33] Um, he had been retired for a while though.

[00:25:35] Like he retired in 2020, I guess.

[00:25:38] So.

[00:25:40] Yu-Gi-Oh! is officially done.

[00:25:42] Like it's one of those things where Konami is just going to milk the shit out of it now to make money.

[00:25:47] Um.

[00:25:48] That's about right.

[00:25:49] Although I am excited for that, that, that classic video game collection that they're planning on releasing at some point soon.

[00:25:55] Yeah.

[00:25:56] That'll be cool.

[00:25:57] Um, that being said though, the, the manga itself.

[00:26:01] Holy fuck.

[00:26:02] Is it dark?

[00:26:03] Oh yeah.

[00:26:04] Yeah.

[00:26:04] So much darker than anything you saw in the anime.

[00:26:07] And that says a lot because there are some, some scenes in the anime that even the English version, uh, kind of push it a little bit for a kid's show.

[00:26:14] So there's also a lot of things I noticed in the, the English anime that they were like, they were like adaptions of arcs from this first section that they just kind of repurposed for the anime.

[00:26:26] Like notably the, the Bacora episode of anime, the anime is very much an adaption of something that happens in the manga a lot earlier.

[00:26:34] Yeah, for sure.

[00:26:37] Um, one thing before we kind of go over the plot, I also want to bring up is, um, you had mentioned it off, uh, Mike, but the art style is.

[00:26:47] Holy crap.

[00:26:48] A lot different than the anime.

[00:26:50] Oh yeah.

[00:26:51] It's, I don't know.

[00:26:52] It's just something about the way this guy draws.

[00:26:54] Like it, like every single panel was just so like lovingly done.

[00:26:59] Like, and it really like accentuates like the, the differences between like, you know, light Yugi and dark Yugi.

[00:27:05] And, um, and it takes a while for him to really kind of like get a full handle on, um, the character designs.

[00:27:14] Yeah.

[00:27:16] Those first couple chapters, I was like, Ooh, this is, uh, this is interesting.

[00:27:21] Um, yeah, it takes a good, like full volume or so before you, they really start to, um, start to, to, to look more like what we're familiar with.

[00:27:31] Yeah.

[00:27:32] Cause I guess the best way to describe his art as opposed to the anime, the anime, for those who know is the art style in that show is extremely angular.

[00:27:42] Like everybody's pointy as fuck in that show.

[00:27:44] Oh yeah.

[00:27:45] Sure.

[00:27:46] The manga is also kind of angular, but it's got a inherent softness to it.

[00:27:52] That kind of makes it stand out a lot better than the anime where everyone very looks like they're cut and paste templates at times.

[00:27:58] For sure.

[00:28:00] Um, for sure.

[00:28:02] This manga is also.

[00:28:03] Everybody that they go to, everybody that they go to school with is a fucking psycho.

[00:28:07] Yeah.

[00:28:09] I mean, even, even Yugi's kind of a psycho in the sand of the manga at first.

[00:28:14] Yeah, for sure.

[00:28:15] That also being said, this manga is weirdly horny.

[00:28:20] Oh yeah.

[00:28:21] It's, this is, it kind of puts the Pokemon one to shame.

[00:28:26] Like this one is way hornier.

[00:28:28] Yeah.

[00:28:29] The Pokemon one is like weirdly unintentionally horny.

[00:28:32] Like this one is just straight up.

[00:28:33] Like we see, we see, uh, I'm going to use the American names a lot because I just, that's how my brain works.

[00:28:40] We see on zoo's ass like five times, like within like the first like four chapters.

[00:28:45] Oh yeah.

[00:28:46] I see her, her panties.

[00:28:47] Uh, there's a whole bit where like when she first meets, um, Yugi's grandpa and he was like, oh, your boobs are filling out quite nicely.

[00:28:55] Yeah.

[00:28:56] It's like, okay.

[00:28:57] Um, there's the point where they're at the water park and like Yugi's like pressed up into her boobs the entire time.

[00:29:02] It's like, this is wonderful.

[00:29:04] And it's so weird too.

[00:29:05] Cause he has like the body of like a little kid.

[00:29:07] So it's just super awkward.

[00:29:09] Yeah.

[00:29:09] Yugi's like that.

[00:29:10] He actually references it a lot where he's like, Hey, I'm a high schooler.

[00:29:13] And it's like, yeah, sure.

[00:29:15] You're like, Hey, I'm 16.

[00:29:17] It's like, what?

[00:29:18] Everyone's like, sure you are.

[00:29:20] You look like you're nine.

[00:29:23] Yeah.

[00:29:24] Like reading, reading this, I was like, wow, what a shit.

[00:29:28] What a, also, um, I did enjoy that the, uh, the localized this was nice enough to put in those little like asterisks, like basically being like this character's name was this in the show, just in case you were confused.

[00:29:41] Hmm.

[00:29:43] Cause, um, I guess to preface it, uh, for people who only watch the anime, Taya's name is Anzu.

[00:29:51] Joey is Juinchy and, uh, Tristan is Honda.

[00:29:58] Hmm.

[00:29:59] Everyone else for the most part is pretty much the same.

[00:30:01] Um, those are the only ones that really.

[00:30:04] Kaiba's still Seto Kaiba.

[00:30:05] Mokuba's still Mokuba Kaiba.

[00:30:07] Uh, Bakura's still.

[00:30:08] Yugi Moto is the same.

[00:30:09] Yep.

[00:30:10] Bakura is the same.

[00:30:11] Ryoto Bakura.

[00:30:13] Even though his first name never gets said.

[00:30:16] Yeah, that's right.

[00:30:17] Well, I mean, I, I knew what it was just from playing the video games.

[00:30:20] Cause the video games always had it for some reason, but.

[00:30:23] It only gets like mentioned when it's like his like introduction panel.

[00:30:26] And then it's just like, he's just Bakura for the rest.

[00:30:28] Well, I guess, cause in Japan they, they refer to each other by last names before first names,

[00:30:32] unless you're like on very good terms, it's different culture.

[00:30:37] Yeah.

[00:30:38] But that being said, the manga starts out.

[00:30:43] Fucking Junichi and Honda are fucking a-holes like right off the bat.

[00:30:47] Oh yeah.

[00:30:47] And they even like, like call attention to the fact that they are bullies and like,

[00:30:53] you're just totally fine with it.

[00:30:55] Everybody's a fucking bully in the show, in this manga.

[00:30:57] I swear to God.

[00:31:00] I don't know.

[00:31:01] I feel like he was trying to say something with this.

[00:31:03] Like I'm wondering how, um, how high schools were in like the eighties and nineties in Japan.

[00:31:07] It must've been a rough time.

[00:31:10] It's hilarious.

[00:31:10] I feel like it's a common theme for mangas of this era.

[00:31:14] It's hilarious too, because I swear to God, the only normal fucking people in this, in that school are Yugi and, um, Anzu.

[00:31:21] But like, even they're kind of weird.

[00:31:23] Yeah.

[00:31:24] Even that's a stretch.

[00:31:26] Cause Yugi is definitely a perv.

[00:31:29] Yeah.

[00:31:29] He's so weirdly pervy in this.

[00:31:31] And it's like, this is so weird when you've only seen the anime.

[00:31:34] Yeah.

[00:31:35] And they make multiple references to like other manga.

[00:31:38] Like I pretty sure in the first, the first chapter, they make a Dragon Ball reference.

[00:31:42] Yeah, they do.

[00:31:44] At least that's what I think it was.

[00:31:47] And then.

[00:31:50] Also, there was a point where they were like, uh, waiting for them to post like test scores or whatever.

[00:31:55] Um, cause in this, they actually go to school.

[00:31:58] Um, yeah.

[00:31:59] And they were, they were posting up the test scores and we find out that Yugi is actually not very smart.

[00:32:04] He does very poorly in school.

[00:32:05] He's like barely above, uh, Jonochi and Honda.

[00:32:09] Yeah.

[00:32:10] It's one of those things where like, because the anime basically like the school aspect of the anime basically gets forgotten after episode two.

[00:32:18] Um, cause they spend.

[00:32:21] Trading card games people trade.

[00:32:23] Also the trading card game doesn't appear for quite a bit.

[00:32:26] Yeah.

[00:32:26] I don't think it's until like midway through like the second volume or something that it's even introduced.

[00:32:31] And it's not even under the same name.

[00:32:33] I think I believe it's called like magic and wizards.

[00:32:36] Yeah.

[00:32:36] Cause they were still.

[00:32:38] The early days where they were kind of.

[00:32:40] Figuring stuff out.

[00:32:42] Mm hmm.

[00:32:43] Also the Kaiba stuff happens so much earlier in the manga.

[00:32:48] Yeah.

[00:32:49] Well, like the first, um, their first meeting with him, but then like the whole like death tea thing, which ends with like the duel.

[00:32:57] We all remember from episode one of the show.

[00:33:00] Um, that happens like with like volume five or six.

[00:33:06] So like that actually takes a little bit to get to that point.

[00:33:10] I like how before that fight happens though, we get this entire like virtual week.

[00:33:14] Like what is with this show, the series and virtual world arcs?

[00:33:17] I swear to God.

[00:33:19] I don't know.

[00:33:21] Um, I will say though, I loved the explanation for why Kaiba rips up the blue eyes.

[00:33:29] Uh, you have to remind me.

[00:33:33] So, cause in, in the show, he just rips it up randomly for no reason.

[00:33:38] Um, in the manga, it's implied that the reason he did is cause the card refused to listen to him.

[00:33:44] Right.

[00:33:45] Oh yeah.

[00:33:45] Cause it was the whole heart of the cards thing.

[00:33:47] It was like, oh, like this is my grandpa's card.

[00:33:49] I won't listen to you because.

[00:33:50] Cause so like just for context to anyone who hasn't read it before the first cause Yuki and Kaiba actually duel once before, like the duel that we all remember from episode one.

[00:34:01] Um, and in that duel, uh, this is like pre like the whole virtual, uh, projectors for dual monsters and all this stuff.

[00:34:09] Wasn't a thing yet.

[00:34:10] That was only invented because, um, dark Yugi, um, or the other Yugi as they refer to it in, in the manga.

[00:34:20] Um, used his, his magical power to create illusions of the monsters.

[00:34:26] Mm.

[00:34:27] And like Kaiba thought that that was so like crazy and cool that he ended up inventing the holographic, uh, technology for the game.

[00:34:34] And that's, that's why that exists in the manga.

[00:34:38] Yeah.

[00:34:39] Yeah.

[00:34:40] It's amazing how much shit makes so much more sense in the anime once you read this first like section of the manga.

[00:34:47] Yeah.

[00:34:48] Yeah.

[00:34:48] And like, so I love the fact that the card game takes it like, I mean, obviously it takes a backseat.

[00:34:54] It doesn't even exist for a good portion of it.

[00:34:56] And then even once it is introduced, it takes a while before we get to another card game.

[00:35:02] Um, and there's a lot of like different games in the series that aren't the card game.

[00:35:07] Oh yeah.

[00:35:08] Like, like almost like, cause there was a lot of like, um, isolated vignettes, like isolated stories.

[00:35:14] Uh, and in each one, it was a different kind of game that they were playing.

[00:35:18] It was some sort of different problem they had to overcome and, um, different kinds of shadow games that don't involve around cards.

[00:35:25] Like the manga has in a, not in a literal sense, but in like a metaphorical sense, it's got like a monster of the week kind of like set up at first where like every chapter would be like.

[00:35:36] Like, so after, after Yugi builds the puzzle, he doesn't immediately become the Yami that everybody knows like from the show.

[00:35:44] Uh, his first appearances as Yami or dark Yugi, as they refer to him in the manga, he's a fucking sociopath.

[00:35:51] Like, oh yeah.

[00:35:52] Like his like fucking like slasher smile he has for like the first couple appearances is like, wow.

[00:35:58] Like this is, I'm like, we were robbed of this in the show.

[00:36:01] Oh yeah, for sure.

[00:36:03] He set two people on fire on separate occasions.

[00:36:08] His first appearance is like, he's playing a game called where it's like stab the money and whoever can get the most without stabbing themselves wins.

[00:36:16] And then of course the guy he's playing with decides, I wait, I have a knife.

[00:36:19] I'll just stab you.

[00:36:20] And then Yugi's like, oh, you lose death to you.

[00:36:23] Cause everyone just fucking dies in this book.

[00:36:25] It's fucking crazy.

[00:36:27] Yeah.

[00:36:27] Cause if you, every day that dies, it goes crazy.

[00:36:29] Uh, cause it's like a whole thing where whenever he instigates a shadow game, if someone cheats at the rules, they have to play a penalty game or there's like a penalty.

[00:36:38] Um, like a supernatural penalty to them so that you'll be stuck in some sort of illusion or there'll be cursed or they'll just die.

[00:36:46] Oh yeah.

[00:36:46] Because the, the first guy, he, um, thinks he's playing in a pile of money, but it's actually a pile of garbage.

[00:36:52] What's that?

[00:36:52] Yeah.

[00:36:53] I actually, I, I, for the first time in a while, I took some notes.

[00:36:58] Uh, I actually made a list of all the different shadow games.

[00:37:01] Uh, just in the portion that we read, there are a total of 34 different games that they play.

[00:37:10] Um, and I was just wondering like, what were some of your favorite ones out of the, out of the ones we saw?

[00:37:14] Cause it was a lot of them.

[00:37:15] Um, I love the first one just cause like fucking sociopath, uh, Yugi was just funny to watch.

[00:37:22] I, one of my favorites was, uh, what I, I titled in my list here, extreme ice hockey.

[00:37:28] Yeah, that was, there was a bit, they were doing a school festival, uh, chapter or two, which, you know, staple and manga and anime.

[00:37:36] There's always a school festival at some point.

[00:37:38] And, uh, school, uh, Yugi's class had decided to do like carnival games.

[00:37:43] Um, well this, a bunch of like jock guys come up and they're like, no, this is our spot.

[00:37:48] We always do like grilling here where we grill food here.

[00:37:51] So they just bring this gigantic fucking like beefy fucking griddle and just dump it in their spot and say, we're leaving this here.

[00:38:00] Deal with it.

[00:38:01] So of course, dark Yugi shows up and he comes out with like this, like block of ice with explosives frozen into the middle.

[00:38:10] And he says, we're going to play table hockey.

[00:38:15] And when it melts down to the point where it hits the explosives, you better hope it's not on your side.

[00:38:21] That's pretty much what, what that game was.

[00:38:23] It was pretty wild.

[00:38:25] I like the one that was like the, uh, there was, there's an entire chapter that's Tom, they're making parodying like Tamodachi pets.

[00:38:32] And, uh, like Yugi, like just like makes them real and fucking like goes after the fucking bully of the week.

[00:38:40] Yep.

[00:38:41] That was like at the expense of Anzu's pet, because of course hers is the one that dies.

[00:38:46] It's like, wow, that was nice.

[00:38:47] Wonderful.

[00:38:48] It figures.

[00:38:48] Well, apparently like even in that, like they only had a life cycle of like what, 18 days or something like that.

[00:38:54] Yeah.

[00:38:55] There was also rock.

[00:38:56] There was the rock and sock of robot fad that went on for like 20 minutes.

[00:39:01] Yep.

[00:39:02] Yep.

[00:39:03] I do like the later ones, wasn't it?

[00:39:06] I believe so.

[00:39:07] It was because it's like the whole like a bully of the week arc thing goes on for a while where it's just like, it's a different game this day.

[00:39:16] And how is dark Yugi going to ruin someone's life this time?

[00:39:20] Yeah.

[00:39:20] With the exception of the Kaiba brothers and Bokora, that's pretty much the entirety of the game.

[00:39:24] These seven volumes.

[00:39:25] Like the last volume, I think was entirely Bokora.

[00:39:29] Yeah.

[00:39:30] Cause, um, oh, well, actually, no, we forgot about the, uh, the shoddy arc.

[00:39:32] Cause that's way earlier in the anime than it is in the anime.

[00:39:36] Right.

[00:39:36] He actually uses the scales.

[00:39:38] He uses the scales, the things that are utterly ignored for the entire anime.

[00:39:42] Yeah.

[00:39:43] I don't think anybody uses the scales for anything until they go to ancient Egypt in, in the anime.

[00:39:48] Yeah.

[00:39:49] Like he's just straight up walking around with the millennium scales and it's like, oh, that that's the thing that never gets referenced.

[00:39:55] Yeah.

[00:39:56] I was like, nobody knew what that did.

[00:39:57] If you just watch the anime.

[00:39:59] Yeah.

[00:40:01] Yeah.

[00:40:01] Like there was a whole thing where, where shoddy gets introduced.

[00:40:04] Um, cause, uh, I think it was like one of, um, grandpa Motos, uh, friends, like archeological friends, like asked if they could put the millennium puzzle on display at a museum.

[00:40:20] And he tries to sell it.

[00:40:23] Yeah.

[00:40:23] And like shoddy shows up and he's like, oh, you guys stole all this shit from Pharaoh tombs.

[00:40:27] So now I'm going to like test your hearts.

[00:40:29] And if, if you're greedy and evil, I'm just going to kill you.

[00:40:33] And he kills one of the guys.

[00:40:34] And like, uh, basically he encounters Yugi and is like, oh, you finished the millennium puzzle.

[00:40:40] I got to test you.

[00:40:42] And pretty much is like, he's ready to kill everybody.

[00:40:45] They're all of his friends, like straight up.

[00:40:49] It's basically the same as games.

[00:40:52] It's basically the same as the anime adaption.

[00:40:55] Only it's a lot darker and a normal Yugi doesn't appear in his subconscious.

[00:41:00] Mm.

[00:41:01] Yeah.

[00:41:04] I think dark Yugi instead is like, uh, he's like, Hey, I don't like that you're here, but I'm not going to kill you because you've made it this far, but I'm going to ask you to kindly fuck off.

[00:41:14] Yeah.

[00:41:14] I'm going to kindly ask you to exit my mind.

[00:41:16] Thank you.

[00:41:17] Yeah.

[00:41:19] And he's like, see, I'm not all bad.

[00:41:21] I helped you out of the hole.

[00:41:23] He's like, he's like, you might be useful later.

[00:41:25] So I'm going to let you live.

[00:41:27] Hmm.

[00:41:29] But yeah.

[00:41:30] So, um, what were some of the other ones?

[00:41:34] Um, oh yeah.

[00:41:36] Yeah.

[00:41:37] I'm going to let you live.

[00:41:44] I'm going to let you live.

[00:41:49] I'm going to let you live.

[00:42:02] Yeah.

[00:42:02] Yeah.

[00:42:03] Like he was like in the anime, the most we get is like that one very brief arc in the beginning during Duelist Kingdom where he like challenges Yugi.

[00:42:12] But like that's over after like a minute.

[00:42:15] So yeah.

[00:42:16] And then by that point, he's like, yeah, no, I like like I'm still going to, you know, side with my brother on a lot of things, but I still like you guys.

[00:42:23] So I'm going to be nice.

[00:42:24] I did like the way they explained how Mokuba becomes nicer though to a group is because he gets he challenges Yugi to like this weird capsule game, which I swear to God at first I thought was dungeon dice monsters.

[00:42:37] No, there is an arc for that in the manga later on.

[00:42:40] Yeah, I assume that's what I assumed.

[00:42:42] But I was like, I was like, I was like, okay, we got another random game.

[00:42:46] And Yugi, of course, beats him because they really do explain the whole king of games thing with dark Yugi.

[00:42:54] But he, of course, beats Mokuba.

[00:42:57] And then Kaiba's got these weird like, hello, motorcycle man.

[00:43:05] I was going to say, Kaiba's got this weird like, evil Kaiba is way more sadistic than he was in the anime here.

[00:43:16] Oh, yeah.

[00:43:17] He employs a serial killer at one point.

[00:43:21] Yeah.

[00:43:21] Yeah.

[00:43:22] He's got this whole like gimmick where like, he has these like, dual boxes where if you lose the game, you basically go through like fucking hell on earth before you get out.

[00:43:32] Yeah.

[00:43:33] They basically put you through this like holographic like hellscape where like, apparently it's tested and proven that you will lose your mind within 10 minutes of being in there.

[00:43:44] Yeah.

[00:43:46] Wonderful, man.

[00:43:48] And Kaiba leaves his brother in there when Mokuba inevitably loses to Yugi.

[00:43:51] He's like, he's like, I don't care about losers.

[00:43:53] And he just leaves him in there because Kaiba is just a sadistic asshole by this point.

[00:43:58] And Yugi.

[00:43:59] I didn't want you to challenge Yugi at all.

[00:44:01] So the fact that you did it lost.

[00:44:03] Well, guess what?

[00:44:04] You still get the penalty.

[00:44:05] Yeah.

[00:44:07] But of course, Yugi has a heart and he pulls it out.

[00:44:10] And then that's kind of where like the whole friendship kind of starts.

[00:44:16] We also get a bit more of the backstory of Kaiba, the Kaiba brothers, like where we see they get adopted by the older Kaiba.

[00:44:25] I forget his name right now.

[00:44:27] In the anime, it was Gozaburo.

[00:44:29] I don't know if that's his actual name in the manga because they didn't say it.

[00:44:33] Yeah.

[00:44:33] We did understand, though, how he ends up taking becoming the sadistic asshole he was because it's implied that on this call him Gozaburo for now.

[00:44:42] He basically mind tortures him into becoming basically a mini version of himself.

[00:44:47] Yeah.

[00:44:48] Conditioned him to be a piece of shit.

[00:44:50] Yeah.

[00:44:50] And then Kaiba ends up doing a hostile takeover of the company.

[00:44:55] And rather than accepting it, he ends up just committing suicide.

[00:45:00] Be like, ha, you win.

[00:45:01] And then just dies.

[00:45:02] It's like.

[00:45:02] Yeah.

[00:45:03] Like the way it's like explained or shown in the manga is Gozaburo like looks at him.

[00:45:10] He's like, this is what losers deserve.

[00:45:12] And he jumps out the fucking window.

[00:45:15] Yeah.

[00:45:15] It's like, it's like, damn.

[00:45:18] And then it also kind of explains like why Kaiba has this hang up about Yugi and like explains so much more to that context because he literally watches dad kill himself because he lost to Seto.

[00:45:31] And he's like, he has that whole like thing drilled into his mind.

[00:45:34] Like, this is what losers deserve.

[00:45:36] So like that explains why he has such a fucking serious vendetta against that one loss he had.

[00:45:43] I also found it really fucked up that when Dark Yugi beats Kaiba the first time, his punishment for Kaiba is like, I left him in the card for a little bit.

[00:45:51] He'll get out eventually, but I just want to fuck with him for a little while.

[00:45:54] Yeah.

[00:45:55] The first time at least.

[00:45:56] And the second time he did like a mind crush.

[00:45:59] Yeah.

[00:45:59] Like in the anime and got killed off his evil side.

[00:46:04] Don't know why he doesn't just do that to everybody, but whatever.

[00:46:06] Because Dark Yugi at first is kind of an asshole himself and doesn't care.

[00:46:12] Again, he set two people on fire.

[00:46:15] I do like the progression of Dark Yugi though, where like he starts off as like this like absolutely sadistic, like fucking like psychopath.

[00:46:23] And then like progressively every time he appears, he's less and less like the slasher smile eventually goes away and he kind of becomes more of the Yami that we know from the anime.

[00:46:32] But in his defense, he only does that psychotic shit if someone like deserves it.

[00:46:38] Like if they bring it on themselves.

[00:46:42] Like that kind of shit only happens if you're either A, cheat or B, trying to fucking like kill the other person.

[00:46:49] Yeah.

[00:46:50] So, I mean, it is deserved.

[00:46:52] I just find it funny that like in the early chapters, like the thing that triggers Dark Yugi is just like Yugi being minorly inconvenienced or something.

[00:47:01] Like he's like, I'm mildly annoyed.

[00:47:03] Time to come out and kill somebody.

[00:47:05] Someone stole Genochi's shoes.

[00:47:07] Yeah, that was a chapter.

[00:47:13] Also, Anzu gets kidnapped like every other chapter too.

[00:47:16] I thought that was mostly an anime trope, but I was like, no, she's always getting kidnapped.

[00:47:20] Oh yeah, the weird fortune teller kid who like was the chloroformed Anzu and was like ready to, you know.

[00:47:28] Yeah, I was like, I'm like, yep, this is a manga, right?

[00:47:32] For kids.

[00:47:34] For kids.

[00:47:37] Shoddy's freaking Rue Goldberg like machine that he has built where she's like standing on this like platform that's supported by a rope.

[00:47:44] And like if they lose, the rope just breaks and she falls to her death.

[00:47:48] But if they win, then it launches the key towards her and it'll free her brain.

[00:47:53] But she gets fucking brainwashed all the time in this series, apparently.

[00:47:57] And it's that thing always bothered me, even going all the way back to watching it in season zero.

[00:48:03] That always bothered me because if this is real life, you know, and that happened, you were standing on that platform brainwashed and the key touches you and it frees you from the brainwashing.

[00:48:13] You wake up in that scenario, you're going to fucking fall.

[00:48:16] Like, I don't care who you are.

[00:48:17] Like, just the shock, like surprise or like the grogginess of waking up, like you're going to fall before you even realize you're standing there.

[00:48:24] Yeah.

[00:48:25] Well, because they even play with that a little where like Junichi's like holding it up underneath and she's like, he's like, he's like, Anzu, get the fuck off the thing.

[00:48:32] And she's like, I can't.

[00:48:33] I'm scared.

[00:48:34] And he's like, we don't have time for this.

[00:48:37] Yeah.

[00:48:37] While he's got like the zombified, like professor come climbing after him.

[00:48:42] Like, oh yeah, that was a thing for a little while too.

[00:48:45] I love how by the end of that, the dude like gets cured of the thing by touching the key.

[00:48:51] There's still he wakes up and he's like, what the fuck?

[00:48:53] I got no teeth left.

[00:48:54] What happened?

[00:48:57] He got like bashed in the face with like a lamp or something.

[00:49:00] And then, and then Junichi like punched the half of his other teeth out.

[00:49:04] Yeah.

[00:49:05] Dude's got like four teeth left.

[00:49:07] Yeah.

[00:49:08] I love the fact too, that like, there are some like sadistic fucking faces in this show.

[00:49:13] I'm like, in this book, I'm like, damn, goddamn, like grandpa, some of his faces early on.

[00:49:17] I'm like, holy crap, dude.

[00:49:19] Oh yeah.

[00:49:22] Yeah.

[00:49:23] There's a lot of, a lot of weird stuff in here, but it's, it's at the same time, it was like

[00:49:27] such an entertaining read.

[00:49:28] And I really loved the monster of the week aspect of these, these first few volumes.

[00:49:33] Cause it was such a page turner and there was always some, some new crazy shadow game

[00:49:38] being played on the next one.

[00:49:40] And the fact that it didn't focus around just one particular game the whole time, like

[00:49:44] made it really interesting.

[00:49:46] No, that that's true.

[00:49:47] Cause like a lot of the time I was always like the whole time I'm like, this school is not

[00:49:52] real.

[00:49:52] But then I realized, of course it's not.

[00:49:54] There's fucking monsters, real monsters and shit going on.

[00:49:57] And I'm just like, this entire world is supposed to be a joke.

[00:50:00] Yeah, for sure.

[00:50:03] I like how they make a reference to like gag mangas too, at one point, even though like

[00:50:07] the early Yu-Gi-Oh stuff is very much a gag manga.

[00:50:11] In a lot of ways.

[00:50:12] Yeah.

[00:50:15] Excuse me.

[00:50:16] So the Kaiba fight I found interesting, like it's a lot different than the one in the, in

[00:50:23] the, in the show.

[00:50:25] The, the first one or like the death tea stuff.

[00:50:28] The, the one that's based off of the actual anime fight, like where he actually goes against

[00:50:32] a, where he uses Exodia and everything.

[00:50:36] Gotcha.

[00:50:37] Yeah.

[00:50:38] So yeah.

[00:50:38] Cause that, that set up as like, it was part of his like revenge plot.

[00:50:42] Cause he lost once before that.

[00:50:44] And he opens up Kaiba land, which is basically theme park skyscraper.

[00:50:54] And it starts out with like, actually the, the duel that Kaiba had against Yu-Gi's grandpa

[00:50:59] happens in front of a crowd.

[00:51:00] So like, it was a lot of people who, who saw what happened.

[00:51:04] And then he's like, okay, well I'll let your dad, I'll let your grandpa out of like the,

[00:51:09] the psycho, like lose your mind death chamber.

[00:51:12] If you agree to, to take on the death tea, which is basically just a gauntlet of multiple

[00:51:20] different challenges that are so fucking stacked against him.

[00:51:23] It's not even funny.

[00:51:25] Yeah.

[00:51:25] This, this would have been a great arc to actually show in the anime.

[00:51:30] Yeah.

[00:51:31] Which again, if you haven't watched it, I highly recommend going and finding season zero.

[00:51:36] Pretty sure it's still on YouTube.

[00:51:38] Yeah.

[00:51:39] I'm pretty sure.

[00:51:39] I'm pretty sure.

[00:51:43] Well, no, that might've been four kids back before.

[00:51:45] Kids is still a thing.

[00:51:46] Oh, I'm sure.

[00:51:47] Konami still has it on there.

[00:51:48] It's around.

[00:51:49] It's worth watching.

[00:51:50] Um, but yeah, there's, uh, like the, the, there's like five stages to the death tea.

[00:51:57] The, I believe the first three happened without an audience, which makes sense.

[00:52:03] Cause, uh, the first one was like basically extreme laser tag.

[00:52:08] Yeah.

[00:52:09] Where, uh, it was, it was Yugi, Junochi and Honda against three like actual mercenaries.

[00:52:16] Yes.

[00:52:17] And, uh, the mercenaries were given like pretty much live ammo and they were given toys.

[00:52:24] Yes.

[00:52:25] Um, cause Kaiba's a fucking dick.

[00:52:28] Oh, and, uh, Honda had his, uh, nephew, his baby nephew with him the whole time during

[00:52:32] all this.

[00:52:33] Oh yeah.

[00:52:33] Who's like motorboating Anzu the entire time.

[00:52:36] Yeah.

[00:52:37] And that's not an exaggeration that this baby is like fully sentient and talking with them

[00:52:42] and involved in everything and consistently pervy.

[00:52:46] Yeah.

[00:52:48] Anzu's like just there for like comic relief half the time too, which is kind of sad.

[00:52:52] Well, I, I, that's one thing about this early section is I like that.

[00:52:57] Everybody has something to do.

[00:52:59] Like, it's not just about like who's good at card games and who's not like everybody has

[00:53:03] a role in this series up to this point.

[00:53:06] And it's, it's really well done.

[00:53:08] Like, like the, the characters all have their own parts to play and they're not just cheerleaders.

[00:53:14] Yeah.

[00:53:15] Like they are in the entire anime.

[00:53:18] Yeah, exactly.

[00:53:20] Um, but, uh, yeah, so they, they, they go against the mercenaries and the only reason

[00:53:25] they're able to win is because Anzu had apparently gotten a job there as like a host for the death

[00:53:31] tea.

[00:53:32] Oh yeah.

[00:53:32] Cause she just shows up and it's like, what?

[00:53:36] Yeah.

[00:53:36] Cause, cause one of Kaiba's like subordinates had hired her not knowing the connection.

[00:53:41] So, but she had an actual like live gun.

[00:53:44] So.

[00:53:45] Yes, she did.

[00:53:45] And so they actually had one to use against the mercenaries and ultimately they came out

[00:53:50] on top in that scenario.

[00:53:52] And then there was like a mini game between the first and second one where, uh, Kaiba's

[00:53:58] butler, who is apparently a certified expert of torture.

[00:54:03] Um, they had to ride like, uh, like a haunted ride, like on a little, like not a roller coaster,

[00:54:10] you know, like kind of like a, like a Disney kind of ride, but it was all horror stuff.

[00:54:14] And basically they had to be completely silent or they would have been electric chaired because

[00:54:19] they were all strapped into electric chairs.

[00:54:21] Yep.

[00:54:22] Um, do you remember how that one gets resolved?

[00:54:25] Not off the top of my head.

[00:54:27] So everyone's strapped into their electric chairs and everyone's like losing their shit.

[00:54:31] Like if they make the slightest sound, they'll be zapped.

[00:54:34] And like, it is like legit electric chairs.

[00:54:36] Like they will die.

[00:54:37] Uh, and the way that they got out of that was, um, because Honda's nephew was there,

[00:54:45] he wasn't strapped into a chair cause he's a baby.

[00:54:48] So he crawled up to the butler and shat in his lap.

[00:54:54] Yep.

[00:54:55] That's right.

[00:54:55] Just left a turd on his lap and he freaked out, made the noise and they got zapped.

[00:55:01] And that was how they got out of that one.

[00:55:04] Manga.

[00:55:05] Gag manga.

[00:55:06] Yep.

[00:55:06] You know?

[00:55:07] Yep.

[00:55:08] Uh, so that happened.

[00:55:10] Um, so they get to the second like legit challenge and it's like a legitimate haunted house,

[00:55:17] uh, where Kaiba employed a literal serial killer, basically bury the chopper from Fullmetal Alchemist.

[00:55:24] Uh, and they, he changed Junochi to him.

[00:55:29] Um, and they're just chained together and he has to, and he has to like either defeat him in combat or get out or whatever.

[00:55:38] Ultimately he's able to, actually, I think he set them on fire.

[00:55:43] Yep.

[00:55:44] Yeah.

[00:55:44] Yeah.

[00:55:45] I guess that makes three people set on fire.

[00:55:49] Um, so yeah, that happened.

[00:55:51] Uh, I feel like the author had some demons, something that he had to just get out.

[00:55:56] They had to, man.

[00:55:57] Cause Yu-Gi-Oh!

[00:55:58] Is dark as shit.

[00:55:59] Like anyone who only watched the anime, you don't, you don't know Yu-Gi-Oh!

[00:56:05] Yeah.

[00:56:06] Especially if you watch the four kids version.

[00:56:09] Yeah.

[00:56:09] Yeah.

[00:56:10] Definitely.

[00:56:12] Yeah.

[00:56:12] Yu-Gi-Oh!

[00:56:13] Is much darker than you remember.

[00:56:16] Um, I'm sure I remember what the third, oh yeah, the third one was, um, Extreme Tetris.

[00:56:23] Yep.

[00:56:23] Yes, it was.

[00:56:25] Where they were stuck in a room where the only way out was like way up above them and they were dropping these giant blocks where they had to dodge the blocks in the right order or they'd be crushed to death.

[00:56:36] And then had to let them build up enough so that they could climb up to the exit.

[00:56:40] Yeah.

[00:56:41] Yeah.

[00:56:43] I know there's a whole bit where like Honda gets stuck, like his jacket gets stuck between two of the blocks and he's like, oh, go on without me guys.

[00:56:50] It's fine.

[00:56:51] You know, you, you do what you got to do.

[00:56:53] And then he shows up later on and he's just not wearing his coat.

[00:56:56] It's like, bro, I didn't just take the coat off then and go with them.

[00:57:00] I mean, ultimately ended up working out in the end, but.

[00:57:04] Honda's not very bright.

[00:57:07] I mean, none of them are apparently.

[00:57:08] They're all very, very poor test scores.

[00:57:10] Yes.

[00:57:11] I'm not going to lie.

[00:57:12] His voice actor in the, um, the original first couple episodes of the dub that was like really dumb and goofy.

[00:57:19] He fits this version of the character perfectly.

[00:57:23] If I'm being honest with you.

[00:57:26] Um.

[00:57:27] Uh, like about half of the time I was reading his voice as a bridge, Tristan.

[00:57:33] Yeah, that's true.

[00:57:34] Hey guys.

[00:57:37] Because he gets that like much.

[00:57:39] Because I mean, in the later half of the anime, he has the much more like heroic voice, but like the first half, he's just got that really dumb ass voice for no reason.

[00:57:48] Yeah.

[00:57:48] I kept like flip-flopping between the bridge voices and that poor kid's voices.

[00:57:53] I mean, whenever I, whenever Janucci's on screen, I'm all, it's always the weird Brooklyn accent where it's like, you can't not read it in a Brooklyn accent.

[00:58:02] It's just one of those things.

[00:58:03] Wayne Grayson.

[00:58:04] It's just Wayne Grayson is Joey at this point.

[00:58:08] Yep.

[00:58:10] Um, so yeah, once they get past the extreme Tetris, as I call it, uh, that's when Yugi goes up against Mokubo with the, the capsule monsters thing, which we already talked about a bit.

[00:58:22] Um, so then it moves on to Yugi versus Kaiba, which is pretty much like beat for beat exactly the same as the, um, the anime episode one version.

[00:58:35] Yeah.

[00:58:35] The, um, the, the arena is not nearly as grand as it is in the, uh, anime because the anime, like by this point, he's like way more advanced with his technology.

[00:58:44] Yeah.

[00:58:44] Like in the anime, it's assumed that like that technology already existed and like he had built it up to a grand scale and apparently mass produced them because they're fucking everywhere.

[00:58:54] Um, cause like in the anime by that point, we're already seeing tournaments with that stuff.

[00:58:57] And it's like in this, in the manga, it's like, yeah, yeah.

[00:59:00] Well, in the manga, um, and you're going to see this as, as you continue through, um, it's basically just a regular size table that they're playing on and they make like smaller, um, holograms of it.

[00:59:14] Like, you know, like maybe the biggest of them, I mean like Exodia and blue eyes and stuff like they're bigger, but like for the most part, like the most, like the biggest you're going to get is like the size of like a, you know, medium sized dog.

[00:59:29] Yeah.

[00:59:31] Yep.

[00:59:34] But, and that's something you're going to see a lot, like the, the big, huge stadium, like that's not a thing really in the manga.

[00:59:41] I think they just did that in the anime to make it seem more grand.

[00:59:44] So they could have the giant hall like monsters on screen and it wouldn't look dumb.

[00:59:48] Probably.

[00:59:49] Yeah, exactly.

[00:59:50] Make it more interesting to the younger audiences, I guess.

[00:59:53] That's my guess.

[00:59:54] But, um, but I actually, I like this version better, especially in the manga because it feels like much more up close and personal.

[01:00:03] Yeah.

[01:00:04] You know, it's a little bit more realistic with like them having conversations and not being like a football field away.

[01:00:12] No, 100%.

[01:00:14] Um, so I think after the Kaiba arc, then we get into the final arc, which is like all the Bacora stuff.

[01:00:21] I think there was a couple, um, a couple other like smaller monster of the week stuff in between.

[01:00:27] But for the most part, yeah, mostly just moved right into, into the Bacora.

[01:00:32] Cause we had the little yo-yo thing.

[01:00:34] Oh yeah.

[01:00:35] That was so many random games, just one-off games.

[01:00:39] Yeah.

[01:00:40] Cause there was a gang running around beating people up with yo-yos.

[01:00:44] Um, yeah.

[01:00:45] Between Kaiba and Bacora, we had the, the love tester scavenger hunt.

[01:00:51] All right.

[01:00:52] Yeah.

[01:00:52] It was like, it was like the little Tamagotchi machine, but it was like a love tester to see like compatibility or whatever.

[01:00:58] And there was a whole thing with that.

[01:01:00] Um, there was the, the game show that Jonochi was on trying to win money.

[01:01:05] Oh yeah.

[01:01:06] Yeah.

[01:01:07] His sister still hasn't been revealed yet.

[01:01:09] Right.

[01:01:10] Right.

[01:01:12] Um, although his, his alcoholic father has.

[01:01:15] Right.

[01:01:16] Yep.

[01:01:17] Um, yeah, there was the extreme rock and sock them that we mentioned before.

[01:01:22] Uh, there was the Ferris wheel bomber.

[01:01:25] Oh yeah.

[01:01:26] Yeah.

[01:01:26] That whole arc with the Yugi and, uh, Anzu at the theme park where like, uh, she straight up, um, the, the one guy, like,

[01:01:35] she's chilling at the pool and that one guy comes up and is like, Hey, Hey, you lone.

[01:01:39] And she's like, Oh my God, a perv.

[01:01:41] And this guy's like, didn't do anything.

[01:01:43] Yeah.

[01:01:44] Cause she's trying.

[01:01:44] Cause she, at this point she's aware of other Yugi and like, she has a thing for him.

[01:01:51] Yeah.

[01:01:51] Even though it's, it's a, it's like the weirdest love triangle on the planet.

[01:01:55] It's like, I'm in love with him and his other self.

[01:01:59] It's like, yeah.

[01:02:00] It's bizarre.

[01:02:03] Um, and then there was also like the weird, like evil dragging card thing that was like based on feng shui.

[01:02:10] Yeah.

[01:02:10] I felt bad for that poor bastard at the pool though.

[01:02:12] He legit didn't do anything wrong.

[01:02:14] And then he gets beat up for no reason.

[01:02:17] That kind of shit happens a lot.

[01:02:19] I know.

[01:02:20] I remember the, the, the one like, uh, I think it was like right before, um, they got Shanghai to Kaiba's house when, um, they were at the arcade and like this random dude dressed up like Bruce Lee just beat the absolute piss out of Yugi.

[01:02:33] Cause he lost.

[01:02:34] Cause he, yeah.

[01:02:35] Like, okay.

[01:02:38] Uh, Yugi gets beat up a lot in the manga.

[01:02:42] Yeah.

[01:02:43] A lot.

[01:02:45] Honestly, uh, regular Yugi is pretty pathetic in the manga so far.

[01:02:50] So far.

[01:02:50] I, I assume he's going to go through a similar arc that he goes through in the anime.

[01:02:54] Like once we start getting into the dual monster stuff, but as of right now, he's, he's pretty, pretty low on the totem pole.

[01:03:01] I will say though, there is one scene that annoys the fuck out of me just because he doesn't, it clearly implies that he doesn't learn is the scene where Kaiba runs into him at the school.

[01:03:11] When Yugi has the blue eyes, he's like, Hey, can I just take a look at it?

[01:03:14] And Yugi's like, Oh sure.

[01:03:15] Nothing wrong could happen here.

[01:03:17] And then immediately realizes Kaiba swapped the card with a fake.

[01:03:21] And, uh.

[01:03:22] Yeah.

[01:03:22] Well, I do love that he picked up on that immediately.

[01:03:25] Yeah.

[01:03:25] It just, it annoys me because then we go to the anime and it's like the whole scene with Weevil later on.

[01:03:30] And I'm like, you didn't learn you dumb ass.

[01:03:33] Hmm.

[01:03:33] Well, at least at that point, like it, he didn't have any reason to be suspicious of Weevil.

[01:03:39] It was just a dude that he just met.

[01:03:41] But I mean, at the same time, almost everybody that Yugi meets is a piece of shit.

[01:03:46] So.

[01:03:46] Yeah.

[01:03:47] I just, it's like the whole thought of like, it's like you have like some of the rarest cards in the game.

[01:03:51] I'm gonna let this random stranger who's one of my direct competition hold them.

[01:03:56] Surely nothing bad will happen here.

[01:03:58] Yeah.

[01:03:59] In the middle of the ocean.

[01:04:00] Yeah.

[01:04:01] On a boat.

[01:04:03] With the implications.

[01:04:06] There's so much of a missed opportunity of like, what could have been done if Yugi still had Exodia throughout the entire story.

[01:04:13] Hmm.

[01:04:14] Yeah.

[01:04:14] No kidding.

[01:04:16] Of course, it would have been too easy.

[01:04:18] And then we wouldn't be able to, he wouldn't be able to showcase all these other cool cards that he gets as the game goes along.

[01:04:24] I just wish we could have got at least a few more fights just because we could have had some of like some interesting ideas where like, oh, he has to get the five cards, but he it's like, he doesn't have just like extreme luck like he did the first time.

[01:04:37] True.

[01:04:38] But yeah.

[01:04:41] So yeah.

[01:04:43] Shadow D&D.

[01:04:46] Kind of.

[01:04:46] Yeah.

[01:04:48] Pretty much.

[01:04:50] Also, we get different, but it's D&D.

[01:04:53] We also got like the first time the ring takes over him here, which is kind of like dark as fuck.

[01:04:59] Yeah, because it's, it's implied at like when Bacora is introduced, like, because he like meets them and he's like, you know, they're all cool.

[01:05:08] And they're like, oh, let's be friends and stuff.

[01:05:10] And he's like, yeah, like, I really want to be friends and like play games and stuff with you guys.

[01:05:14] But like every time I play games of people, I black out and they go into a coma.

[01:05:20] And I don't really don't want to go through that again.

[01:05:23] So no.

[01:05:24] But then we also evil Bacora takes over and he has different plans.

[01:05:28] We also got a perfect explanation for because in the anime, it's implied that the Millennium Ring is weird and it like doesn't like to be separated from its owner.

[01:05:38] We actually got a good explanation for how that works where like the damn ring fucking like merges with Bacora.

[01:05:44] Like it stabs its little points into his chest.

[01:05:46] And I'm like, holy fuck.

[01:05:47] Like this is dark.

[01:05:49] Yeah.

[01:05:50] Yeah.

[01:05:51] Like the little thing, the little sharp dangly bits that hang from it were literally like just freaking embedded into his chest.

[01:05:58] We did get a bit more of that in Dark Side of Dimensions like years later, like that explained a lot.

[01:06:04] But I like this explanation where it's like the ring is kind of just like very possessive.

[01:06:11] Mm hmm.

[01:06:12] Because I think the spirit in the spirit of the ring is essentially tied to Bacora in a lot of ways.

[01:06:19] No, I believe it's part of the same bloodline.

[01:06:23] Yeah, I could be wrong, but I'm fairly certain it is.

[01:06:27] It's similar to how like you use a descendant of the Pharaoh in a way.

[01:06:32] Yeah.

[01:06:32] Yeah.

[01:06:34] So, yeah, like they meet, they go through this whole thing and then like Bacora like doesn't show up to school one day and they're like, oh, let's go visit him at his house because we just know where he lives, apparently.

[01:06:47] So they go and visit him and Bacora is about to tell them to leave and instantly Shadow Bacora takes over.

[01:06:53] It's like, oh, come on in.

[01:06:54] We're ready to play a game.

[01:06:56] Yeah.

[01:06:57] And they all pick, you know, their little characters and make their character sheets and stuff for D&D.

[01:07:04] And instantly things start going wrong.

[01:07:07] Yeah, it's a bit more.

[01:07:09] It's a bit less.

[01:07:12] It's essentially an adaption of the evil spirit of the ring arc from the anime where they basically do that little game.

[01:07:20] We're like, hey, let's all have our favorite cards and Yugi's deck and it'll be a fun little game thing.

[01:07:25] But instead, it's D&D.

[01:07:28] Yeah.

[01:07:28] Which I honestly, I like this version better.

[01:07:31] And I love that episode when I was actually had that episode of VHS when I was a kid and I loved that one.

[01:07:35] But I like this version of better.

[01:07:37] I feel like it works better.

[01:07:40] It's basically the same idea.

[01:07:42] It's just not as fantastical.

[01:07:47] And also, I don't know if you picked up on this because everyone's character has the same name as their actual like selves.

[01:07:55] Except Junochi.

[01:07:57] Did you notice his character name in D&D was Joey?

[01:08:03] Oh, you know what?

[01:08:05] My brain is just so trained to him being Joey that I probably didn't even notice.

[01:08:11] I literally, I've read this portion of the manga a few times.

[01:08:14] I didn't notice it until this read when I was actually trying to pay attention to what was going on.

[01:08:20] That's probably what happened with me.

[01:08:21] I probably saw it and just assumed, oh yeah, Joey.

[01:08:23] And then my brain kind of forgot.

[01:08:25] Oh yeah, he's not Joey in the manga.

[01:08:26] I don't know.

[01:08:28] So, yeah.

[01:08:29] You remember the episode of Pokemon when Ash goes to challenge Sabrina's gym?

[01:08:36] and he loses and they all get like shrunken and put into that like little doll

[01:08:42] like doll town or whatever and everyone was like everyone had like their souls like sealed into

[01:08:48] dolls and shit that's essentially what pakora has been doing all along he gets people to play

[01:08:53] the dnd game with them and when they lose their souls get trapped inside that game piece so he

[01:08:59] has this huge fucking collection of game pieces that are actual people and that's kind of like the

[01:09:06] like almost instantly like they realize that something's not right about what's going on

[01:09:10] because the characters are like moving and talking on their own yeah it's it's one of those things

[01:09:17] where it's like this is dark and also the implications like what does he do with the

[01:09:21] bodies well i i think the bodies themselves are just in a coma so they're probably at the whatever

[01:09:28] hospital that's closest to them at the time so there's just thousands of bodies just in the

[01:09:33] hospital in commas apparently and apparently there's no limit to like he's not limited to just

[01:09:40] sealing them into like the little figurines because apparently he's also sealed some souls into the

[01:09:45] dice that he uses yeah and which he uses to cheat yeah but so dark pakora is a fucking if you thought

[01:09:56] dark yugi was a sociopath who but there was like i don't know and it was cool because we get zork

[01:10:03] like you know zork like the big bad from the final arc of the anime appears in this he's like the the

[01:10:10] monster that they're trying to overcome in um in the dnd game which i thought was really interesting

[01:10:16] it was kind of like a big like foreshadowing moment to like the end game

[01:10:22] um and then there was uh there was like some like little detail stuff that they they threw in there

[01:10:28] as they were playing like i think at one point jonoji cuts off zork's arm so like it was like a

[01:10:37] connection between zork and pakora uh so when he cut off zork's arm good pakora was able to control

[01:10:44] the arm that zork no longer has so he was kind of like you know fucking up evil pakora's uh schemes

[01:10:53] and stuff on their behalf and like trying to make shit work it was really interesting like the whole

[01:11:01] the whole course of events um it's a really it's a really fun read i really suggest anyone check it out

[01:11:06] yeah it's it's so weird reading it now after seeing the anime because it's it's it basically makes you

[01:11:13] realize that anime is such a full adaption of the manga it really is like i really wish we had like

[01:11:19] a true like faithful adaptation of yukio like from beginning to end i'm surprised they haven't like

[01:11:27] tried to redo the uh the original anime at some point i guess it's because konami's lazy but

[01:11:35] i mean it might happen in the future if they ever decide to stop making new shows and

[01:11:39] like you know because they're still making new yukio shows and new yukio cards and video games

[01:11:45] all this other stuff but yeah because they gotta make money well i mean yeah i have any idea how much

[01:11:52] nostalgia they've been able to play off of it they've remade the original anime but with like

[01:11:56] modern animation and like faithfully telling the story from the manga like

[01:12:01] yeah especially because like their animes aren't afraid to be dark nowadays so

[01:12:07] yeah no kidding god that would be even like like the ones that are more meant for kids like um

[01:12:13] like first is dragon quest the adventures of die like that is very clearly a kid show but it has

[01:12:18] such dark moments no it really does and it's it's it's something that i'd like to see i just don't

[01:12:26] know if konami would ever do it because konami is konami well i mean it it isn't even necessarily

[01:12:32] that they would have to read i mean they could easily just whoever holds the rights right now for

[01:12:39] season zero if they dubbed that that could be a whole separate series true you know it's only like

[01:12:47] it's only like a regular season length you know it's not very long there's probably some sort of

[01:12:53] conflict between the studio that does the animation for uh yugioh now and then toy yeah because it

[01:13:01] because it was uh it was a different animation studio that did season zero i believe it was toe

[01:13:06] way that's what i thought but i didn't want to i didn't want to claim it as a statement of fact

[01:13:12] because i don't know for sure i just remember too like i had a magazine that was like a yugioh

[01:13:18] insider magazine way back in the day and like they had all these images from season zero and i was

[01:13:22] like what the fuck is this like i have no recollection of this at all season zero also has a movie as well

[01:13:30] i believe like the red eyes is like the focal point of it that's interesting because like that

[01:13:37] that card is so associated with joey nowadays i don't even remember like what the context of it was but

[01:13:45] i know i watched it a long time ago

[01:13:49] so we that's pretty much where the uh what we read ends off with i believe right

[01:13:58] because i'm assuming i do love the i was gonna say i do love like how i mentioned earlier how like

[01:14:04] like good bakora kind of gets control of that arm that they cut off of zork

[01:14:10] uh i love the way that evil bakora like gets around that yeah he just like takes the hand and

[01:14:17] stabs it on one of the like figurines like literally just like skewers his own hand

[01:14:23] just to keep it in place like yeah evil evil bakora does not give a fuck like he literally is like yeah

[01:14:31] deal with that and then move on with this plot yeah i don't know it was just over like beginning to end

[01:14:36] i just i loved this whole section it was like honestly i mentioned it to you i didn't want to

[01:14:41] stop reading once i once i got to the end point like i wanted to just keep going because it's just

[01:14:46] such a fun story no it is honestly like i was thinking about it as well but i don't have any more

[01:14:53] i only have the two more volumes left in the three and one and then i have to track down more at the

[01:15:00] moment yeah but uh yeah i i really did enjoy the read through it was

[01:15:07] shocking how different it is in a lot of ways um yeah it'll be even more so like as we as we go

[01:15:14] through more of the manga because like yeah we're going to start getting into the territory of stuff

[01:15:18] that we saw in the anime but like a lot of the stuff happens very differently like especially because

[01:15:23] we watched the the four kids version of it where it was like severely watered down yeah

[01:15:30] yeah yeah definitely um but yeah i think uh it'll probably be a bit before we get back to you the

[01:15:38] yugioh manga because we're going to be cycling through to different uh mangas over the course just to keep

[01:15:43] things fresh um but yeah next time we'll definitely continue on i'm not sure what the next manga we're

[01:15:50] gonna do going forward is uh we'll probably figure that out off camera um but yeah other than that i

[01:15:59] think that's that pretty much wraps up the episode yeah uh what what would you give a for a rating for

[01:16:07] this this section of manga i'd give it an eight like a solid eight um i like where it's going i i'd like

[01:16:14] to see more of it before i have a more definitive thought on it um it's definitely a lot more

[01:16:22] interesting than the anime kind of is in a lot of ways so i'll give it a major props for that um it is

[01:16:29] surprisingly dark though like if you're not expecting that going in it is kind of shocking to someone who

[01:16:37] has never yeah it's surprisingly dark and more pervy than you would think yeah it's very much a product

[01:16:43] of the early 90s and early 2000s it is um i think the best way to describe it is it is a trip

[01:16:51] for sure for sure i i have to recommend anybody who hasn't read the yugioh manga please do so

[01:16:57] it uh the entirety of it is on um the shonen jump streaming app for three dollars a month you get their

[01:17:05] whole library available to read um which includes you know yugioh pokemon not pokemon
