[00:00:05] The following is a GNC Podcast Production, Pop Culture Podcast.
[00:00:41] Hello and welcome to Geek Addicts, the Pop Culture Podcast where we talk about summoning devils to learn the secret of immortality.
[00:00:47] My name is Matt, with me, he's got a gun in his heart, Bill Barber. How's it going Bill?
[00:00:54] I'm so lost. I didn't know how to think of that one for a minute.
[00:00:59] I'm doing okay. It's been a rough week but at the time this comes out it'll be like a month after that.
[00:01:07] We'll see how we are by then.
[00:01:09] Yeah, hopefully things will be improved.
[00:01:13] I don't know about your week but it just feels like everything in my house is falling apart all at once.
[00:01:19] I know that feeling.
[00:01:22] Like the spray hose in our sink is broken, our oven is broken, our dryer is broken, our fridge is leaking.
[00:01:29] Literally everything is fucking falling apart all at once.
[00:01:32] That's kind of been my experience being a first time homeowner.
[00:01:37] Like it's, the place was a shithole when I bought it and I had to fix everything because of the previous attendance but I'm still finding stuff.
[00:01:46] Like things keep, I notice things I'm like oh that's great.
[00:01:51] No kidding.
[00:01:54] But yeah, I mean we both made some progress on animes this week so that's a good thing at least.
[00:02:00] Yeah, we're kicking it into gear now because we're getting closer to the end of the year.
[00:02:04] We got two and a half months before the year end.
[00:02:08] Right?
[00:02:08] Yeah.
[00:02:09] So I don't know about everybody else but I'm re-banging out a good portion of the list I'll be bringing to the year end to wrap up within the next couple of months for sure.
[00:02:18] Well I want to challenge, I want to at least challenge Slade and possibly Alex this year because I know-
[00:02:25] I'm not setting my sights that high.
[00:02:28] I mean, I know Slade's watched a lot but I can at least like follow him because me and him both are on an analyst and analyst you can actually see what other people are watching which is kind of fun.
[00:02:39] That's fair.
[00:02:41] That's fair.
[00:02:41] Alex is not so like I have no idea what Alex has watched.
[00:02:44] All I know is she's watched like over 70 shows so.
[00:02:47] Seriously?
[00:02:48] Yeah.
[00:02:49] Jesus.
[00:02:51] Although she counts her re-watches so we'll have to see what that means.
[00:02:57] Well, I do too but to be fair the vast majority of re-watches I've had this year are things that I haven't seen in the better part of a decade.
[00:03:04] Some in some cases more than a decade so I mean those ones those would you get a little bit of leeway with you know.
[00:03:11] I'm probably gonna so I keep mine separate just because I like to count just stuff I've seen the first time, but I am gonna this year have a separate side.
[00:03:21] I'm gonna note the things I did rewatch so I'll at least have a note of them but they're not gonna be on my official list.
[00:03:27] I was planning on doing pretty much the same thing.
[00:03:31] Um, yeah, I have like separate categories for new watches re-watches and movies like separate them all right now they're just all on the same list just until I sort of hope.
[00:03:40] Yeah, like people don't need to know I rewatched inu yasha for like again because that's just it's expected that I'm gonna at least watch part of that during the year.
[00:03:49] Yeah, and although I haven't put it on my list, but I did technically rewatch most of both kaguya sama and fruits basket this year just because Cindy was watching them so.
[00:03:59] Mm hmm.
[00:04:01] Just from happening to be there I watched a lot of those again so not the whole thing for both but most of them.
[00:04:09] Speaking of kaguya sama you recently finished uh o shinoko.
[00:04:13] Yeah, I uh yesterday I I finished it up and I was real I was really enjoying the story really looking forward to season two which as of recording I believe is wrapping up in Japan.
[00:04:24] Uh, and the dub is just starting to come out here.
[00:04:28] Episode three I believe just released dub so yeah, so I got a little bit because uh at least until the dub is complete for season two.
[00:04:38] It's definitely not gonna be leaving high dive which I don't have at the moment the only reason I watched o shinoko is because the first season was put on hulu.
[00:04:44] So hopefully when the dub is complete that'll get put on hulu it'll probably be a little bit but I might just do a free trial just to watch the second season because I'm kind of a best in the story now I might even buy the manga.
[00:04:59] It's I I don't wanna I don't wanna say too much because I've read ahead in the manga and oh boy the series takes some weird turns but um.
[00:05:08] I can already kind of see some shades of of stuff coming up.
[00:05:12] Yeah, there's a particular aspect to it that I'm not 100% sure how I feel about but um.
[00:05:18] I'll leave that for people who are interested to find out.
[00:05:22] As I said to you, you know, behind the curtain um that I I'm already seeing like some stuff going on in the background that's making me kind of like uh.
[00:05:35] The premise.
[00:05:36] I don't know how this is gonna unfold but it's it's yeah.
[00:05:39] Yeah.
[00:05:40] The premise is one of those things that's really interesting but then when you really think about some of the aspects of the plot you're like what the fuck.
[00:05:47] Like cool.
[00:05:48] Especially once you start getting more details about like their feelings about certain things and it's just I don't know.
[00:05:53] Yeah.
[00:05:53] We'll see where it goes.
[00:05:54] We'll see where it goes.
[00:05:55] See for me I just it my biggest like thing that always gets me is this this technically the same universe as Kaguya-sama.
[00:06:02] Hmm.
[00:06:03] Like they.
[00:06:03] Which is bizarre.
[00:06:04] Which is apparently like leads me to believe that like this is all happening.
[00:06:11] Like at the same time as like the goofy Kaguya-sama stuff is happening so.
[00:06:16] Well from what from what you told me about um.
[00:06:20] About that little like crossover reference uh apparently like the Kaguya stuff happened like years before what's going on in Oshinoko now.
[00:06:29] Yeah.
[00:06:30] Yeah because.
[00:06:30] I don't know how many years but Kaguya is apparently married so at least a portion at least a few years.
[00:06:38] Yeah.
[00:06:38] Yeah.
[00:06:38] Oh yeah.
[00:06:39] The big like thing that uh the blinker miss it thing is if you pay attention to her signature at the end there she's uh it's revealed that she married the uh.
[00:06:47] She married Mayuki at one point.
[00:06:49] Mm hmm.
[00:06:51] Which I mean everyone saw coming but.
[00:06:53] Yeah I mean it's kind of obvious it's kind of the point of the whole show.
[00:06:56] I know um in the Kaguya-sama manga one of the later chapters there's an image of um.
[00:07:03] There's like a big poster for Bikamachi in the background so it's it's there is definitely some crossover.
[00:07:10] He has a third he's got a third series like manga that he's uh writing as well.
[00:07:15] Um that's not as like that shit insane as Oshinoko but it's it hasn't been brought over here yet but apparently that also takes place in the same universe.
[00:07:25] But I imagine this the shared universe thing with with Oshinoko and Kaguya and whatever that third series is is probably somewhat similar to how technically Dr. Slump and Dragon Ball take place in the same universe.
[00:07:38] Hmm.
[00:07:39] Which.
[00:07:40] True.
[00:07:41] Is so out of the realm of possibility but it just is so you just kind of accept that.
[00:07:47] It's just one of those weird things that um.
[00:07:52] That you just kind of accept the more you uh get get through it.
[00:07:57] Yeah.
[00:07:59] Oh.
[00:08:00] But yeah aside from that uh.
[00:08:03] I got my my my crunchy roll back.
[00:08:06] So uh.
[00:08:07] Balls have been chipping away at one piece I am.
[00:08:10] At the time of recording right now I less than 40 episodes before I am caught up on the dub so.
[00:08:16] Hmm.
[00:08:17] Whew.
[00:08:18] Almost there almost there.
[00:08:19] Um.
[00:08:20] Yeah.
[00:08:20] But I also.
[00:08:22] Oh was that.
[00:08:23] I was gonna say uh just uh.
[00:08:25] I've been like switching between like Netflix uh crunchy roll high dive because there's there's a.
[00:08:32] I'm not gonna lie high dive is worth the uh the subscription because like there is a lot of stuff on.
[00:08:37] I don't know if right now.
[00:08:38] Yeah I've been thinking about that lately because like you know not even just Oshinoko but I've been hearing about a bunch of stuff that's on there that just isn't anywhere else.
[00:08:45] It feels like a lot of streaming services are trying to like snatch up ones that are just saying no you can only watch this here.
[00:08:52] Well high dive is like if you want to watch Jojo part six you have to go to Netflix.
[00:08:55] Yeah.
[00:08:56] You can't watch anywhere else you know.
[00:08:57] So I'll give high dive credit like they get exclusive rights to most of their stuff like right away and then eventually they'll let it branch out.
[00:09:06] Um high dive though I'll say is it I'll give it a pass on a lot of things mostly because it's pretty much all just sentai stuff because sentai owns high dive.
[00:09:13] Mm hmm.
[00:09:15] So it's not like they're hoarding specific things that's just they're they're basically just releasing the stuff that they own.
[00:09:20] I gotcha.
[00:09:22] Um which is fine because you also get a lot of old ADV stuff including like Asamaga Dio's on there which is amazing.
[00:09:29] Oh that's cool.
[00:09:30] That's one that I've been meaning to watch because it's one that I I have a lot of like old school anime fans talk about that one and it's just I've been wanting to check out more like 80s and 90s like older anime.
[00:09:42] So Asamaga Dio is like a 2000s anime like very early.
[00:09:46] Um it it it the reason why Asamaga Dio is so amusing is it was one of those animes that was considered undoubable for the longest time because it is the series is I always joke saying like the series is literally Seinfeld the anime because it's literally an anime about nothing.
[00:10:03] Yeah.
[00:10:04] It's just five high school girls and the weird shit that happens.
[00:10:09] Well that's like the same kind of shit that people say about Dr. Slump that it's undoubable but no it's definitely double.
[00:10:14] There's plenty of other gag animes that have come out over here dubbed and they make total sense even if they had to change up some of the jokes to make them work like you can make it work.
[00:10:26] You just know I'm gonna try and at this point we have enough people who know what they're doing in the industry that they could they could do it and it wouldn't be a big deal.
[00:10:35] They could definitely do it nowadays like obviously like early 2000s I understand like that could have been a bit more of a thing.
[00:10:42] Yeah a little more of a struggle especially with like the weird way that they treated American audiences with anime like they a lot of censorship a lot of localization and stuff like that.
[00:10:53] Also like slice of life and like comedy animes just didn't really come out over here at the time.
[00:10:59] True.
[00:10:59] It was all action-y stuff.
[00:11:01] It was basically all Dragon Ball shounens and stuff like.
[00:11:05] Yeah like that style.
[00:11:06] Even like the more girly animes were like Sailor Moon and stuff which were still pretty action-packed.
[00:11:12] Hmm.
[00:11:14] But uh.
[00:11:16] I know in the um.
[00:11:18] I was just gonna I was gonna continue with the anime thing go on.
[00:11:21] I was just gonna say like I know in um over on the GNC server we have the uh the gif space which is just I I swear every server has like that one channel that's just dedicated to like gifs or like emojis or something.
[00:11:33] It gives a memes.
[00:11:35] On uh the GNC server we have the anime gif space which is just random no no context anime gifs at all times.
[00:11:43] But um I always love to throw like Azamaga Daiya ones in there because like they are just hilarious because they out of context it's like what the fuck is this show?
[00:11:51] Not gonna imagine.
[00:11:52] Like my favorite one.
[00:11:54] It's definitely one I want to check out.
[00:11:56] Yeah my favorite one I posted recently was it was them in like the swimming pool during like school like swimming class and like one of the girls is like the
[00:12:04] like just like floats to the top of the surface and it just like the reactions from the characters are great.
[00:12:10] Hmm.
[00:12:11] In context it makes sense but as a gif you're like what the fuck.
[00:12:15] I gotta mad at him.
[00:12:17] Yeah so after that I uh I rewatched FLCL for the first time in a very long time.
[00:12:24] And god damn that it's just as confusing as it always was.
[00:12:28] It's just it's entertaining for sure but it's just so fucking chaotic and insane it makes absolutely no sense.
[00:12:35] The soundtrack is a fucking bop though.
[00:12:38] I won't tell you that much.
[00:12:39] Yeah.
[00:12:40] Yeah that's my favorite part of watching like different animes recently like the fucking soundtracks.
[00:12:45] Like every show's got a different one and it's like wow these things bop.
[00:12:49] I've also been re-watching um Darker Than Black.
[00:12:52] Have you ever seen that one?
[00:12:54] I have not.
[00:12:55] I've heard of it but I haven't had a chance to watch it.
[00:12:57] It's an interesting one.
[00:12:59] It's another one of those like original animes where there's no I mean technically they made like a two volume manga after the fact.
[00:13:05] But it was like it like Cowboy Bebop or Death Parade where it was made specifically to be an anime.
[00:13:10] Um.
[00:13:12] And it's really hard to find nowadays.
[00:13:15] Like uh you can't stream it anywhere.
[00:13:19] Even though like if you google it it says you can watch it on YouTube but they only have one episode.
[00:13:24] Which is pretty useless because the entire series is just like two part episodes.
[00:13:30] Ah.
[00:13:31] So getting one episode doesn't really do much for you.
[00:13:35] Um.
[00:13:37] But it's like really hard to find nowadays and even if you want to get the DVDs like I looked on eBay just for shits and giggles just to see.
[00:13:45] It's like fucking $200 for that show.
[00:13:48] And it's only a 26 episode show.
[00:13:49] It's it's not a long one.
[00:13:51] And there there is technically a second season but it's garbage.
[00:13:55] Yeah.
[00:13:56] It completely changes the whole tone of the show.
[00:13:58] So.
[00:14:00] I mean that's that's not as tone.
[00:14:02] Well I mean when I think like confused like tonally confused shows I still think Full Metal Panic is like the uh.
[00:14:08] The winner of like just this show has no idea what it wants to be.
[00:14:12] Hmm.
[00:14:13] You you said you watched that show this week right?
[00:14:15] I well I watched it in full like way back like back in like the day.
[00:14:20] But it's been like years since I've actually given it a full rewatch.
[00:14:23] Um.
[00:14:24] So I just kind of counted this as my uh.
[00:14:27] As a watch.
[00:14:28] Like because it.
[00:14:30] Legit the last time I watched it in full was like early 2000s.
[00:14:33] So.
[00:14:35] But um.
[00:14:36] Yeah.
[00:14:36] Full Metal Panic is one of those shows where it's it's one of the few mech shows that I can actually watch.
[00:14:41] Hmm.
[00:14:50] Um.
[00:14:52] And it can't decide which one it wants to be.
[00:14:55] It's the most tonally confused show like ever.
[00:14:59] But then it gets better because the second season just fucking throws the mech stuff out and it's just a fucking slice of life the entire time.
[00:15:06] That's pretty funny.
[00:15:07] But then.
[00:15:08] But then the third season gets rid of all the slice of life comedy and just becomes a full on action mech show.
[00:15:14] Like.
[00:15:14] That's wild.
[00:15:17] It's bizarre.
[00:15:20] Yeah.
[00:15:21] Yeah.
[00:15:42] It's bizarre.
[00:15:44] Like it's even more like heavy than the first season.
[00:15:46] Never get into like macross or any of that stuff.
[00:15:48] Yeah.
[00:16:14] I mean.
[00:16:15] What franchise is part of but there's a series called Iron-Blooded Orphans.
[00:16:19] I think it's an offshoot of.
[00:16:22] Might be an offshoot of Gundam.
[00:16:23] I'm not sure.
[00:16:24] I'd have to look it up.
[00:16:25] But um.
[00:16:26] I heard that was good.
[00:16:27] Hmm.
[00:16:28] Um.
[00:16:28] Another good one that's worth watching is Garn Ligon.
[00:16:32] But Garn Ligon's kind of like a parody of mech anime.
[00:16:35] Hmm.
[00:16:36] It's kind of.
[00:16:36] It's the same.
[00:16:37] It's the same people that did Kill la Kill.
[00:16:39] Um.
[00:16:40] Okay.
[00:16:41] Where Kill la Kill was more of a parody of shounen.
[00:16:43] Uh.
[00:16:44] Garn Ligon's like a parody of mech anime.
[00:16:47] Which is kind of why I find it more interesting.
[00:16:50] I gotcha.
[00:16:52] I gotcha.
[00:16:55] But yeah.
[00:16:56] Um.
[00:16:58] That's pretty much been it for stuff that I've watched this week.
[00:17:03] Um.
[00:17:05] Definitely played a whole lot.
[00:17:06] I did start a play of um.
[00:17:09] Dragon Quest 6.
[00:17:10] Which.
[00:17:11] Nice.
[00:17:11] I just figured it was time.
[00:17:12] You know.
[00:17:13] It's been a while since I beat the fifth one.
[00:17:15] And.
[00:17:16] I've kind of like.
[00:17:17] Gone around.
[00:17:18] I've played one or two Final Fantasies.
[00:17:20] And um.
[00:17:22] You know.
[00:17:22] Chrono Trigger.
[00:17:23] A couple other games since then.
[00:17:25] So I was like.
[00:17:25] Yeah.
[00:17:26] You know.
[00:17:26] I think it's time to jump back into Dragon Quest.
[00:17:28] Hmm.
[00:17:29] I haven't played very much.
[00:17:31] I've been only like two hours in or something like that.
[00:17:32] But.
[00:17:33] 6 is good.
[00:17:34] It's just like.
[00:17:35] The thing with 6.
[00:17:36] It's actually good that you're playing it now.
[00:17:37] And not directly after 5.
[00:17:39] Because um.
[00:17:41] 4 and 5 are like masterpieces.
[00:17:42] And 6 is a good game.
[00:17:44] But it definitely felt kind of like a step back.
[00:17:46] Compared to.
[00:17:47] 4 and 5.
[00:17:48] That's fair.
[00:17:49] But playing it now.
[00:17:50] You're probably.
[00:17:50] You won't even notice.
[00:17:52] Most likely.
[00:17:53] Yeah.
[00:17:54] I mean.
[00:17:54] It's just.
[00:17:56] I don't know.
[00:17:56] A lot of those kinds of.
[00:17:58] Like with the Dragon Quest games.
[00:18:00] And like the early Final Fantasies.
[00:18:01] They all kind of blend together for me.
[00:18:03] Like.
[00:18:04] Like.
[00:18:05] They don't have like.
[00:18:06] I don't know.
[00:18:07] I guess it depends on which one.
[00:18:09] Individually.
[00:18:10] You know.
[00:18:11] In general.
[00:18:12] They don't have like super stellar writing.
[00:18:14] Or.
[00:18:15] You know.
[00:18:16] Incredible effects.
[00:18:17] Or anything like that.
[00:18:18] It's usually.
[00:18:19] It's pretty standard.
[00:18:20] For the time.
[00:18:22] I mean.
[00:18:23] There are exceptions.
[00:18:24] I.
[00:18:24] I mean.
[00:18:25] Dragon Quest 3, 4 and 5.
[00:18:26] I love all.
[00:18:27] All three of those games are amazing.
[00:18:29] So many puns.
[00:18:31] Oh yeah.
[00:18:32] All the time.
[00:18:34] But.
[00:18:35] Yeah.
[00:18:36] I don't know.
[00:18:37] I.
[00:18:37] I need to keep going with that.
[00:18:39] Because I started my Dragon Quest run.
[00:18:40] A few years ago now.
[00:18:42] And.
[00:18:43] I still have.
[00:18:44] What?
[00:18:45] 6, 7, 8, 9.
[00:18:47] So 5 more games.
[00:18:49] To go through for Dragon Quest.
[00:18:51] At least out of the main games.
[00:18:53] So you started 6, 7, 8, 9.
[00:18:56] And 11.
[00:18:57] Because we can't play 10.
[00:18:59] Because.
[00:18:59] Squeenix hates us.
[00:19:01] Well.
[00:19:01] I heard.
[00:19:02] I heard a rumor.
[00:19:03] That we were supposed to be getting.
[00:19:04] An offline version of 10.
[00:19:05] At some point.
[00:19:06] But.
[00:19:06] We'll see.
[00:19:07] We've.
[00:19:07] We've been supposed to get that.
[00:19:09] For so long though.
[00:19:10] That I'm always like.
[00:19:11] I'll believe it when I see it.
[00:19:12] Yeah.
[00:19:13] I mean.
[00:19:14] I'm not holding my breath.
[00:19:15] I mean.
[00:19:15] I still have plenty of other games.
[00:19:16] To play before I get to that.
[00:19:18] Between Dragon Quest.
[00:19:19] Final Fantasy alone.
[00:19:20] Not even counting.
[00:19:21] Like the Persona games.
[00:19:22] And whatever else.
[00:19:23] So.
[00:19:23] Yeah.
[00:19:26] Yep.
[00:19:26] I hear you there.
[00:19:28] Hmm.
[00:19:30] But.
[00:19:31] Yeah.
[00:19:31] We've waffled on enough.
[00:19:33] We should probably jump into our topic for this episode.
[00:19:36] This one was.
[00:19:37] One that you've been spearheading for a while now.
[00:19:40] Hmm.
[00:19:42] We.
[00:19:44] I finally watched Bacchano.
[00:19:46] So.
[00:19:46] We're going to finally talk about Bacchano.
[00:19:49] Huzzah.
[00:19:50] I finally know somebody else has watched Bacchano.
[00:19:53] Yeah.
[00:19:54] Because it's one of those shows that like.
[00:19:56] It.
[00:19:56] It is a.
[00:19:57] A very well done show.
[00:19:58] And I've read a bunch of the books too.
[00:20:00] And those are.
[00:20:00] Are really.
[00:20:01] Really good too.
[00:20:03] Um.
[00:20:04] But it's.
[00:20:05] It's.
[00:20:05] It just feels like it's such an unknown.
[00:20:07] And it's so hard to find.
[00:20:09] Because.
[00:20:09] Like.
[00:20:09] Like I was saying earlier with Darker Than Black.
[00:20:11] You can't stream it anywhere.
[00:20:13] So.
[00:20:14] You either need to download it.
[00:20:16] Or you need to buy the DVDs.
[00:20:17] Which.
[00:20:20] The official release DVDs.
[00:20:22] Are.
[00:20:23] Pretty expensive nowadays.
[00:20:24] I got lucky.
[00:20:26] Paying $80 for mine.
[00:20:29] At.
[00:20:29] Actually at Anime Boston.
[00:20:31] Years ago.
[00:20:33] See.
[00:20:34] I believe.
[00:20:35] I believe they're like twice the price now.
[00:20:36] For the official.
[00:20:37] Yeah.
[00:20:38] See.
[00:20:38] I.
[00:20:38] I.
[00:20:39] I watched mine graciously.
[00:20:40] Because Matt sent me a bootleg.
[00:20:42] Which I am very appreciative for.
[00:20:45] But I mean.
[00:20:46] From what I saw.
[00:20:46] It was.
[00:20:47] It's a very well done bootleg.
[00:20:48] Bootlegs have come a long way.
[00:20:50] That's.
[00:20:50] That's for sure.
[00:20:51] So.
[00:20:51] It worked.
[00:20:52] But I am.
[00:20:53] I.
[00:20:55] Basically.
[00:20:56] The way I see it is.
[00:20:57] I'm only going to watch these.
[00:20:58] When I want to watch.
[00:20:59] The show.
[00:21:00] Because I.
[00:21:00] Whenever I.
[00:21:01] When I booted these things up.
[00:21:02] I was like.
[00:21:02] Sometimes the DVD player was like.
[00:21:04] Didn't want to read it.
[00:21:05] And other times it would.
[00:21:06] Boot right up.
[00:21:06] And I was like.
[00:21:07] Yeah.
[00:21:08] It's.
[00:21:08] It's a little.
[00:21:09] It's a little hesitant on these.
[00:21:11] Yeah.
[00:21:11] Well.
[00:21:12] I mean.
[00:21:12] When.
[00:21:14] Whenever I get around to.
[00:21:16] To coming down to visiting.
[00:21:17] I'll bring my hard drive.
[00:21:18] And you can have my.
[00:21:19] My digital version.
[00:21:21] So that way.
[00:21:22] You'll just have it.
[00:21:22] You can just.
[00:21:23] Stick it on a flash drive.
[00:21:24] Or something.
[00:21:25] Yeah.
[00:21:26] That was funny though.
[00:21:27] Like occasionally.
[00:21:27] Like.
[00:21:28] I got to disc two.
[00:21:29] And I was.
[00:21:29] It was like.
[00:21:29] It wouldn't play for a few tries.
[00:21:31] And I was like.
[00:21:32] Oh no.
[00:21:32] Like this might be a bad sign.
[00:21:33] But eventually it did.
[00:21:34] I think the DVD player was just being.
[00:21:36] Shit.
[00:21:38] Yeah.
[00:21:39] Yeah.
[00:21:40] I had to.
[00:21:41] I watched via bootleg.
[00:21:42] But.
[00:21:42] I got the full experience.
[00:21:43] Because like Matt said.
[00:21:45] This show is impossible to find.
[00:21:47] Like.
[00:21:48] Period.
[00:21:50] Legally.
[00:21:52] Yeah.
[00:21:53] Yeah.
[00:21:53] Even I.
[00:21:53] Even I didn't watch it legally.
[00:21:55] Technically.
[00:21:56] Yeah.
[00:21:58] You know what I found interesting.
[00:21:59] I was looking into it.
[00:22:00] Like this show came out.
[00:22:02] At a point too.
[00:22:03] Where like shows like this.
[00:22:04] Just kind of.
[00:22:05] Anime was still kind of in that weird.
[00:22:08] Space.
[00:22:09] Where not everyone had really accepted it yet.
[00:22:12] Mm-hmm.
[00:22:13] And I feel like.
[00:22:14] Especially a show like this.
[00:22:16] That was very.
[00:22:19] Not typical.
[00:22:20] Probably got overlooked.
[00:22:22] Yeah.
[00:22:23] I mean.
[00:22:23] I believe when the show came out.
[00:22:25] In Japan.
[00:22:25] We were in middle school.
[00:22:27] So it was still.
[00:22:28] It was still that weird.
[00:22:29] Like awkward time for anime.
[00:22:31] For sure.
[00:22:31] I also.
[00:22:32] I also found out.
[00:22:33] This show apparently bombed in Japan.
[00:22:35] But was very successful over here.
[00:22:37] Which is.
[00:22:38] Well I mean.
[00:22:38] I guess it makes sense.
[00:22:39] Because of the tone of the show.
[00:22:41] Because.
[00:22:42] Like apparently.
[00:22:42] It's a very western show.
[00:22:44] Yeah.
[00:22:44] It takes place in New York in the 20s.
[00:22:46] Yeah.
[00:22:47] I was reading.
[00:22:48] Apparently.
[00:22:49] The reason why it never got a second season.
[00:22:52] Is because.
[00:22:52] It was so poorly received.
[00:22:54] And rated so badly in Japan.
[00:22:56] That they just didn't bother.
[00:22:58] That's wild to me too.
[00:22:59] Because.
[00:23:00] You've been writing the books for a long time.
[00:23:02] And from what I understand.
[00:23:03] The books did really well.
[00:23:05] True.
[00:23:05] But.
[00:23:06] To be fair.
[00:23:07] Like after watching this.
[00:23:08] Like the series is very western.
[00:23:10] Oh for sure.
[00:23:11] I don't know.
[00:23:12] I feel like.
[00:23:13] I feel like western style stuff.
[00:23:15] Generally tends to do well over there.
[00:23:17] There.
[00:23:18] But I guess.
[00:23:19] It depends on what it is.
[00:23:21] I think this one might have just came out at a weird time too.
[00:23:24] It's funny.
[00:23:25] Because I feel like if this came out over here now.
[00:23:28] It would be even bigger.
[00:23:29] Because like this show reminded me a hell of a lot of Spy Family.
[00:23:33] When I was watching it.
[00:23:34] Yeah.
[00:23:35] It definitely does have like.
[00:23:36] Because it has that very like old school vibe to it.
[00:23:39] Yes.
[00:23:40] It takes place during Prohibition.
[00:23:42] So I mean.
[00:23:45] I also say that.
[00:23:47] So this was one of those animes that Funimation did the dub on.
[00:23:51] But I don't think they actually own the rights to.
[00:23:53] Kind of like Fullmetal Alchemist in a sense.
[00:23:56] Um.
[00:23:57] Because the dub is phenomenal.
[00:23:59] Yeah.
[00:24:00] Very well done.
[00:24:01] It was definitely.
[00:24:01] I feel like when this was dubbed.
[00:24:03] It was at like Funimation's high point.
[00:24:05] Where they still had a lot of the classic actors.
[00:24:08] But at this point.
[00:24:09] They had a lot more experience.
[00:24:11] Than when they had started out.
[00:24:13] Like they knew what they were doing.
[00:24:14] And they were just starting to sign on with a lot of like.
[00:24:16] The newer ones.
[00:24:17] Which are.
[00:24:18] Kind of like.
[00:24:20] The newer ones who are like.
[00:24:22] Classics.
[00:24:23] Who are like staples now.
[00:24:24] Yeah.
[00:24:25] Because like.
[00:24:25] Just like to name a few.
[00:24:26] Like right off the bat.
[00:24:27] You got J. Michael Tatum.
[00:24:30] Caitlin Glass.
[00:24:31] Just to name a few.
[00:24:35] Todd Haberkorn.
[00:24:35] Who I think this was one of his earlier roles.
[00:24:38] Yeah.
[00:24:40] Ian.
[00:24:42] What the hell?
[00:24:44] Ian Sinclair.
[00:24:45] That's his name.
[00:24:46] Ian Sinclair.
[00:24:46] He was.
[00:24:47] Yeah.
[00:24:47] It's funny.
[00:24:47] Because he's in everything now.
[00:24:48] But.
[00:24:49] Yeah.
[00:24:50] This was like one of his.
[00:24:51] This was one of his very first roles.
[00:24:53] I mean.
[00:24:54] Then you have like staples.
[00:24:55] Like Chuck Huber.
[00:24:56] Plays a character.
[00:24:59] Brian Massey.
[00:25:00] Jerry Jewell.
[00:25:01] Like all the Funimation staples.
[00:25:03] I'm pretty sure like.
[00:25:04] John Borgmeyer's in here.
[00:25:05] At one point.
[00:25:06] Yeah.
[00:25:07] He's a smile guy.
[00:25:08] Yeah.
[00:25:09] Yeah.
[00:25:11] Jason Lieberich is in this.
[00:25:13] I'm just kind of going down the list.
[00:25:15] Ironically.
[00:25:16] Despite the fact that it's a Funimation dub.
[00:25:18] No Chris Abbott.
[00:25:19] Yeah.
[00:25:20] I found that interesting.
[00:25:21] I mean.
[00:25:21] Oh Chris Patton.
[00:25:22] One of the classic ADV dubbers who had jumped overs in this.
[00:25:28] I watched Full Metal Panic recently.
[00:25:30] So that's why Chris Patton's voice pops into my head.
[00:25:32] Because he's the main character in that.
[00:25:33] But Joe McDonald's in it.
[00:25:39] Colleen Clickenbeard.
[00:25:40] Yeah.
[00:25:41] It's a very solid cast.
[00:25:42] Oh yeah.
[00:25:43] And it's all.
[00:25:43] It's all mainstay voices that you have definitely heard at one point or another.
[00:25:49] Just funny going down the list of characters because there are so many wacky characters
[00:25:53] in this show.
[00:25:56] So I got to ask.
[00:25:58] Because you mentioned that you might have to.
[00:26:00] Did you end up reading a synopsis after you watched it?
[00:26:02] I did and I'm still confused.
[00:26:06] So I'll say it right off the bat.
[00:26:08] This show is a show that you have to kind of watch a couple times because it tells a story.
[00:26:15] But it doesn't tell the story in a linear order.
[00:26:18] It tells multiple stories.
[00:26:20] And I think one of the most confusing parts about it is the fact that there are some characters
[00:26:26] that are in multiple of the stories.
[00:26:28] And because it tells chunks of each story in every episode, it can get a little confusing.
[00:26:34] Especially where Isaac and Miria are involved.
[00:26:39] Because they are in all of the stories.
[00:26:41] But they are also the best characters in the show.
[00:26:44] True.
[00:26:45] This is true.
[00:26:45] Because they are so disconnected from the plot.
[00:26:49] But they're also in every aspect of it.
[00:26:53] So how do you want to handle this?
[00:26:54] Do you want to kind of just jump around and talk about different aspects?
[00:26:57] Do you want to focus on each individual storyline on its own?
[00:27:01] I say we can cover the stories, but I think we should jump around probably a bit.
[00:27:06] Kind of like how the show does.
[00:27:07] Because it just makes sense.
[00:27:11] I found it interesting that the first episode kind of like...
[00:27:14] Acts is kind of like an explanation of what goes on.
[00:27:19] And then it immediately kind of starts jumping around after that.
[00:27:22] Yeah.
[00:27:23] It's funny too because the first episode...
[00:27:25] Like if this is your first time watching, you wouldn't catch on to it at first.
[00:27:29] But when you go back for your second watch, you realize the first episode, almost everything it shows is the end of the stories.
[00:27:36] Yeah.
[00:27:37] Yeah.
[00:27:37] Because they talk about the train, the flying pussyfoot or something like that.
[00:27:41] The flying pussyfoot.
[00:27:42] Yes.
[00:27:42] Yes.
[00:27:43] Everybody laughs when they hear that.
[00:27:46] That is such a train name though.
[00:27:49] Yeah.
[00:27:49] Yeah.
[00:27:51] Um...
[00:27:52] So, just a basic outline of pretty much covering all of the stories essentially.
[00:27:59] The story is about Prohibition Era and it's Immortals and Gangsters.
[00:28:05] It's basically the whole shebang.
[00:28:07] So, the funniest part about this was we had watched the first episode on a...
[00:28:12] We were like live streaming some anime earlier and I watched the first episode there.
[00:28:16] And then I had like taken like a two week break before I jumped into this.
[00:28:21] And I had completely forgotten about the Immortal stuff.
[00:28:23] So, when like the whole deal with the devil happened, I was like, what the fuck?
[00:28:27] Like where did this come from?
[00:28:29] Yeah.
[00:28:29] Yeah.
[00:28:30] Which in the books, it goes a lot deeper into explaining like what that actually was.
[00:28:35] And like how things get set up.
[00:28:38] I'm still...
[00:28:38] I'm not totally caught up with the books.
[00:28:40] But I've read like 15 of them.
[00:28:42] By the way, the anime only covers like the first four books.
[00:28:46] And like little tiny snippets of a couple of the later ones.
[00:28:50] But that's it.
[00:28:51] As all the show covers.
[00:28:52] There's so much more to the story.
[00:28:54] So, I'm guessing that the train is only like the first like real major story.
[00:28:57] Like the train kind of goes away after that.
[00:29:00] Yeah.
[00:29:00] The train is the second and third book.
[00:29:03] Okay.
[00:29:04] And then after that, I believe the train is decommissioned afterwards.
[00:29:07] Yeah.
[00:29:07] Because the series basically like...
[00:29:10] It's actually kind of interesting.
[00:29:11] The series basically is exclusively pulled on this train.
[00:29:16] Which is interesting to me.
[00:29:18] I kind of like like heist, train heist kind of stories.
[00:29:21] So, I kind of like dug this from the start.
[00:29:25] Yeah.
[00:29:27] Yeah.
[00:29:27] The first time I watched it, the train storyline was definitely the part that caught my interest the most.
[00:29:34] I do...
[00:29:35] Well, first of all, before we really jump into the story.
[00:29:38] How's that opening theme?
[00:29:41] Very, very catchy.
[00:29:43] It's got a lot of bass and a lot of big band.
[00:29:45] And I like it.
[00:29:46] Yeah.
[00:29:46] It's very, very jazzy.
[00:29:48] I like how it does like the character rundown.
[00:29:51] Which I believe is a reference to an old British movie.
[00:29:55] But I don't remember it.
[00:29:57] Because I know my buddy Matt, who showed me this show actually.
[00:30:00] He told me what it was...
[00:30:02] What that was from.
[00:30:03] But I don't remember what it was.
[00:30:04] I'd have to ask him.
[00:30:06] I love how it starts with that coin flip every time, too.
[00:30:09] Yeah.
[00:30:13] Also, you got to give the dubbers credit.
[00:30:15] Because like the New York Brooklyn accents that everyone puts on are so spot on.
[00:30:19] Oh, yeah.
[00:30:20] It's great.
[00:30:21] Like very like newsies kind of.
[00:30:24] Like old school Brooklyn accents and shit.
[00:30:27] It...
[00:30:27] This is a very stylistically accurate show in like every aspect.
[00:30:32] Yeah.
[00:30:33] Just like...
[00:30:33] I don't know.
[00:30:34] There's so much about this show that I just love.
[00:30:36] Even though it is very confusing.
[00:30:39] But it's short enough where you can get away with saying, okay, I can watch it twice back to back.
[00:30:43] And now I understand what's going on.
[00:30:46] Yeah.
[00:30:48] Well, so the three main storylines that are going on is the first storyline.
[00:30:54] Like if we're looking at it chronologically.
[00:30:57] Because the show doesn't.
[00:30:58] So we will.
[00:30:59] Chronologically.
[00:31:00] Chronically.
[00:31:00] There's the story around the different mafia and Kimura families in New York.
[00:31:11] And the story of how a bunch of them became immortals.
[00:31:14] That's the first storyline.
[00:31:15] The second storyline is the story on the train where three different factions all kind of collide.
[00:31:24] And the third story is kind of a continuation of the first story where a character from that story is missing and his sister is trying to find him.
[00:31:34] And shenanigans happen because of that.
[00:31:38] Isaac and Miria...
[00:31:41] My voice just fucked up.
[00:31:43] What's her name again?
[00:31:45] Miria.
[00:31:47] Miria.
[00:31:47] Miria.
[00:31:47] Yep.
[00:31:47] Isaac and Miria are involved in all three of these stories somehow.
[00:31:51] But also not involved.
[00:31:52] It is...
[00:31:53] They are enigmas in this show.
[00:31:55] And I kind of like that.
[00:31:56] Yes.
[00:31:56] They are.
[00:31:57] For sure.
[00:31:57] There's actually a lot of enigmas and a lot of really fucking...
[00:32:01] A lot of serious nut jobs in this show.
[00:32:03] That's for sure.
[00:32:04] Well, it's like...
[00:32:05] It'll cut from episode to episode.
[00:32:07] And like the...
[00:32:08] You had told me this when I was...
[00:32:09] I was...
[00:32:10] We were chatting dirt while I was watching it.
[00:32:11] And you had mentioned how the best way to tell what's going on is what is Isaac and Miria wearing at the time.
[00:32:19] Because their whole shtick is that they are robbers, but they're idiots.
[00:32:24] So they like to dress up in crazy costumes.
[00:32:27] Like just for example, I don't know if it was mentioned in the show.
[00:32:30] I know it was a thing in the books.
[00:32:32] But they think that they killed a bunch of kids because they stole candy.
[00:32:40] They stole a bunch of candy and they think that a bunch of children starved because they didn't have candy to eat.
[00:32:46] They also wanted to steal the entirety of a museum and realized that they weren't able to do that.
[00:32:51] So instead, they stole the entrance.
[00:32:54] And by that, I mean they stole the door.
[00:32:57] But that's the kind of shit they get up to.
[00:32:59] And they're dressing crazy costumes for all of it.
[00:33:01] I think in this show, we get to see them.
[00:33:04] They're coal miners.
[00:33:06] They're dressed up as Native Americans.
[00:33:09] And a nun and a pastor at one point.
[00:33:12] Yeah, and they were like a cowboy and a saloon girl at one point.
[00:33:18] At the end of this series, you see them in like, you know, 70s guard.
[00:33:22] Disco guard.
[00:33:23] In the early 2000s, which makes it even funnier.
[00:33:26] Yep.
[00:33:28] Yeah, it's pretty wild.
[00:33:29] I love the way that the series ends with that, by the way.
[00:33:31] It's fucking great.
[00:33:33] Yeah.
[00:33:35] See, when I saw them in the Native American garb, I was like, what the?
[00:33:38] I was like, okay.
[00:33:39] Like, what does this have to do with anything?
[00:33:42] And I think that's kind of the point.
[00:33:43] That it has nothing to do with anything.
[00:33:45] So, is anyone listening up to this point who is really confused about what this story is about?
[00:33:54] Watch the show and you'll probably still be just as confused.
[00:33:57] Yeah, this is exactly what it's like watching the show.
[00:34:00] Because you're literally going to go from episode to episode and be like, wait, wait, wait.
[00:34:03] Did I miss an episode?
[00:34:05] And then you realize, oh, no.
[00:34:07] It's just, it's told in such a, like, non-linear fashion where it literally jumps around.
[00:34:13] And, like, you'll see, like, points that should be near the beginning are, like, in the middle.
[00:34:16] And then, like, points near the beginning are at the end.
[00:34:19] And it's just all over the place.
[00:34:21] Or even just in that first episode when, like, they're by the train tracks and they're talking about all the bodies that were thrown from the train.
[00:34:27] They're like, oh, we got a live one over here.
[00:34:29] And then you see Lad Russo, which, if you watch the series, you know, like that motherfucker.
[00:34:35] And he's just missing an arm.
[00:34:37] He's got the bone sticking out of his stump and everything.
[00:34:40] And you're like, okay.
[00:34:41] How does this happen?
[00:34:43] We should also talk about just how fucking violent this fucking show is.
[00:34:48] Yeah, it gets pretty rough at points.
[00:34:50] Not, like, you know, it's violent, but it's not, like, berserk violent or Helsing violent.
[00:35:00] It's definitely not necessarily family friendly.
[00:35:06] See, I'd say it's violent in the sense that it's, like, shockingly violent.
[00:35:11] Like, when you're watching Berserk or Helsing, at least you know what you're in for.
[00:35:16] You respect it.
[00:35:17] Yeah, this show you'll be thinking, okay, this is just some weird, goofy crime, like, New York crime-like drama.
[00:35:23] And then it's, like, just guy just explodes blood everywhere.
[00:35:26] And it's like, oh, okay, we're doing this, I guess.
[00:35:29] Yeah.
[00:35:31] Like, one of the characters literally coats himself completely head to toe in blood and then just goes on a murder spree.
[00:35:37] He's one of my favorite characters.
[00:35:38] Oh, the scene with him and Lad Russo fighting on top of the train is literally my favorite part of the show.
[00:35:45] Just because it's literally just Jerry Jewell and Brian Massey just fucking, like, chewing the scenery the entire time.
[00:35:51] Oh, yeah.
[00:35:52] They absolutely kill it in that scene.
[00:35:54] I love that whole, like, monologue that Jerry Jewell goes on in that scene with just, like, this whole world is mine.
[00:36:03] Like, if I were to die, everything would cease to exist.
[00:36:06] I can make anything happen because I am God in this world.
[00:36:09] And it's, I don't want to say it's true, but it kind of is.
[00:36:14] Like, the dude could, like, do anything.
[00:36:16] My favorite part about that is, like, Jerry Jewell is, like, a very, like, talented voice actor and funny.
[00:36:23] But, like, he has, like, this one voice he does that's, like, the one that I recognize the most, which is the one he was using in this show.
[00:36:29] But it's also the same voice he uses for, like, Kiyosoma in Fruit Baskets.
[00:36:34] So the whole time I'm like, damn, this is what happened if Kiyos snapped and never met Toru.
[00:36:38] Yeah.
[00:36:39] Like, this is exactly what would happen.
[00:36:41] And I love how, you know, I mentioned earlier with the opening theme song where it gives the rundown of the characters.
[00:36:49] Notice how it didn't mention, like, you see him, like, in passing in that.
[00:36:54] But it doesn't name him specifically because they didn't want to bring attention to him.
[00:36:59] They wanted it to be a surprise in the show.
[00:37:01] And I really like how they did that.
[00:37:03] And I noticed that on my most recent watch through.
[00:37:06] That one scene in the train where you see him, like, in the distance and he looks like this fucking demon running through the train is, like, I was like, what the fuck is this show?
[00:37:15] And then you realize it's just him covered in blood.
[00:37:17] And you're like, oh, okay.
[00:37:18] And then he's like, oh, he's just, like, he literally is just, like, a circus performer who became an assassin is just extremely, like, like, physics breakingly.
[00:37:28] Like, unhinged, but physics breakingly, like, nimble.
[00:37:31] Like, he can just fucking do anything.
[00:37:34] Yeah.
[00:37:35] I like his, like, one line where he's like, he's like, he's like, I'm just a train conductor.
[00:37:40] You killed my friend.
[00:37:41] Now I'm going to murder you.
[00:37:43] Yeah.
[00:37:43] His name was Tony.
[00:37:45] Yeah.
[00:37:46] He was two days from retirement.
[00:37:50] Poor Tony.
[00:37:51] Just the way Jerry Jewell delivers that line.
[00:37:55] I'm just like, Jesus Christ.
[00:37:57] I love the scene.
[00:37:58] I love the scene where he confronts the kid after the train.
[00:38:02] And he's just like, oh, I thought you would have recognized my voice, blah, blah, blah.
[00:38:05] And when the kid realizes it.
[00:38:07] And the dude just keeps talking.
[00:38:08] All of a sudden the kid just, ah, and just runs away.
[00:38:13] Just loses it.
[00:38:16] There's so much shit in the show is like.
[00:38:18] Like, the best way I can describe this show is fucking unhinged and off kilter.
[00:38:23] Do you know what Baccano means?
[00:38:26] No, I do not.
[00:38:27] What does it mean?
[00:38:28] Baccano means ruckus in Italian.
[00:38:31] Makes sense.
[00:38:32] Yeah.
[00:38:32] Because my God.
[00:38:34] Everything about this show is mental.
[00:38:36] Yeah, for sure.
[00:38:39] So yeah, let's spread out and talk about some of the individual characters.
[00:38:44] So Firo is your basic anime protag.
[00:38:46] Even though there is no protag in this show.
[00:38:49] Yeah, he's like.
[00:38:50] He was literally kind of like the cover shot character.
[00:38:54] He is kind of like the poster child of the show.
[00:38:58] I mean, he's the guy that's.
[00:39:00] He's supposed to be like American, but he's very clearly like the Japanese anime protagonist.
[00:39:05] Yeah.
[00:39:06] Well, even though there's only like a couple of Asian characters in this series.
[00:39:11] True.
[00:39:11] True.
[00:39:12] And they're generally not given a ton of focus either.
[00:39:14] At least in what's covered in the anime.
[00:39:17] There are more in the books, but.
[00:39:19] The only one I can think of is like the girl that worked at the club that Isaac and Miriam were like robbing.
[00:39:26] Hmm.
[00:39:28] The one when Isaac got shot by the bullet.
[00:39:31] Yeah.
[00:39:32] When they're doing like the initiation into the into the Kimura family.
[00:39:37] Yeah.
[00:39:37] I love that.
[00:39:37] The firing of the ceremonial pistola and he fires into the roof.
[00:39:41] And you just hear.
[00:39:41] Oh, Isaac's been killed.
[00:39:44] Well, I love that scene because they play it early in the show and they don't.
[00:39:48] They don't bring it up again.
[00:39:49] It's supposed to.
[00:39:49] And you think it's just like an off kilter gag.
[00:39:51] And you're like, oh, that's dark, but funny.
[00:39:53] And then you find out what actually happened.
[00:39:55] You're like, oh, that's even funnier because it's it's once again, Isaac and Miriam.
[00:39:59] Once again.
[00:40:00] It's fucking great.
[00:40:01] It's Isaac and Miriam are definitely the heart and soul of the show.
[00:40:05] For sure.
[00:40:06] I love their reasoning, too.
[00:40:07] They robbed the place and then they just start throwing the money around and they're like, this will make up for rob for all the thefts we did in the past.
[00:40:13] Right.
[00:40:14] It's like, yeah, sure.
[00:40:16] That's exactly how this works.
[00:40:17] It's like they came to a point in their thievery where they were just like, you know what?
[00:40:21] I feel like we should kind of like make up for all the bad shit.
[00:40:23] So we're still going to steal, but we're going to steal from criminals instead now and give to the poor or the modern day Robin Hood.
[00:40:29] Yeah.
[00:40:30] Right.
[00:40:32] Yeah.
[00:40:32] There's there's just so much to the show.
[00:40:37] So they didn't really give them a ton of attention in the series, but I really enjoy the Gandor brothers.
[00:40:45] Hmm.
[00:40:47] Especially the way that they're introduced in the first novel.
[00:40:54] Because I believe in the show.
[00:40:56] Well, I mean, we see bits and pieces of them, but the first time that they're like really introduced, I believe, is when Dallas goes to them for help.
[00:41:04] And they kind of just tell him to fuck off.
[00:41:07] Um, because I believe in the book, uh, there's actually a scene with them right before he shows up where they're essentially confronting one of their lieutenants for, uh, embezzling their money.
[00:41:21] And, um, they do like this whole thing where like they're playing poker with them and, uh, they're like, oh, let's make it interesting before they actually confront them.
[00:41:31] Um, they put a revolver on the table and they say, whoever loses, uh, you know, pushes to their head and fires.
[00:41:41] And they all put their hands down, like all the Gandor brothers, and they've all clearly cheated.
[00:41:46] Like they like, yeah, like they have like, like a six of a kind in some cases, like random shit like that.
[00:41:51] Like it's very obviously they're cheating.
[00:41:54] Uh, just to like, kind of like, um, you know, draw them out.
[00:41:59] And they're like, we know you've been stealing money from us, blah, blah, blah.
[00:42:02] Like you lost to the gun thing.
[00:42:04] And they do this whole like run through where it was a blank in the gun, but he turned it on them.
[00:42:08] And, uh, it basically was like, oh, you chose the worst choices.
[00:42:12] Like if you had, if you had put the gun to your head and fired, we would have just let you go and cut ties.
[00:42:17] If you had, uh, begged and pleaded for your life, we would have kicked your ass.
[00:42:20] And then we would have let you go.
[00:42:22] So, but you know, now you're going to die because you tried to kill us.
[00:42:25] Like it's, it's, I can't really do it justice by explaining it, but it's just a bad-ass scene when you read it for the first time when the Gandors are introduced.
[00:42:31] It's just so cool.
[00:42:33] Oh yeah.
[00:42:34] And luck is just a cool character.
[00:42:36] Hmm.
[00:42:37] I was going to say too, like another scene we should really talk about is the scene where like that explains the whole immortality thing.
[00:42:45] Uh, on the, on the ship.
[00:42:47] But the part where they drink the, the, the elixir and become immortal for the first time.
[00:42:54] Yeah.
[00:42:56] Um, so the way that, that, that the, the liquor of immortality gets there is it, it, it jumps around before it actually gets to their table and, and is drank.
[00:43:09] Cause, um, there's a, there's this character called Zillard Quate, Zillard Quate, who was one of the original immortals where all of this starts, uh, from 200 years previous.
[00:43:21] And he had been trying to perfect the liquor, uh, and finally succeeded only for a couple of schmucks to accidentally burn down the warehouse that it was being made in.
[00:43:33] Um, so they were only able to save two bottles of it and basically it goes from getting stolen by, um, uh, Dallas's group to being left at the Gandor's to being stolen again by Isaac Amiria and then being brought to where it would eventually be drunk.
[00:43:50] Yeah.
[00:43:51] Yeah.
[00:43:51] I just love the scene where like he drinks it and he's like, he's like, huh, does it even work?
[00:43:56] And the, the, the eerie voice in the back's like, oh, what, you don't trust me?
[00:44:00] And then he's like, how about this?
[00:44:01] And he just fucking cuts his head off.
[00:44:03] Yeah.
[00:44:03] And then you're just like, oh shit.
[00:44:05] And then it just like, kind of like, it shows you how the immortality, they just kind of like, it just kind of like sticks itself back together and he gets back up, like the blood flows back in and everything.
[00:44:14] And he's like, he's like, you believe me now?
[00:44:16] And it's like, wow, like that's a dark scene.
[00:44:19] Yeah.
[00:44:19] But then immediately everybody's like, oh, it works.
[00:44:22] And they just start drinking it.
[00:44:24] Yeah.
[00:44:26] Yeah.
[00:44:26] It's really interesting.
[00:44:27] Cause I don't think I've ever really seen this kind of immortality before this series.
[00:44:32] There's been many different variations of immortality through fiction.
[00:44:35] And this is definitely the most interesting, I think.
[00:44:38] Well, it's like, it's weird because it's like they're immortal and the only, but they can still be killed, but by other, only by other immortals.
[00:44:47] Which is a pretty, the first time you see that happen, that's, that's disturbing.
[00:44:52] Yeah.
[00:44:53] Like the, the, cause you see the fucking, basically they have this ability where if they can like touch them on like the forehead with their hand and then like, just like think of devouring them.
[00:45:05] And then it just literally like, they get sucked into their hand and it's like bone and all it's fucking, it's like the most fucked up scene in the anime.
[00:45:12] Yeah.
[00:45:13] Yeah.
[00:45:13] It's, it's incredibly graphic for what it is.
[00:45:19] Yeah.
[00:45:19] It's, it's definitely pretty dark, but like the whole concept of it and then just like, oh, then like, yeah, you're killing them, but you're also absorbing them into yourself.
[00:45:27] So you gain all of their knowledge, all of their experience, all of their skills, like all of their memories, everything, everything that they are becomes a part of you.
[00:45:36] Like, well, that was like, to me, like the biggest, like shock was like, uh, Zillard's eventual demise.
[00:45:42] I wasn't expecting him to get fucking devoured by Fero of all people at the end of the series.
[00:45:48] Hmm.
[00:45:48] Which is a big reason why, like, I feel like the series kind of tries to paint him as the main character because he, because it had been established that Zillard had eaten like what, 18 other immortals.
[00:46:00] So he has a lot of, a lot of knowledge and a lot of skills that he's absorbed throughout the years.
[00:46:07] So Fero just gets that like day one, right after it becomes mortal.
[00:46:11] It's interesting to me though, how Fero's like intended to be the main character, but when you actually break it down, he really doesn't appear that often compared to some of the other characters.
[00:46:21] Yeah.
[00:46:21] He's not there a lot.
[00:46:23] Like most of the train stuff, he's only kind of basic, barely there.
[00:46:27] He's not even in the train.
[00:46:29] Yeah.
[00:46:29] Like he's waiting at the train station for the train to show up because he knows people who are coming there on the train.
[00:46:35] Yeah.
[00:46:35] Like he's, he's at the beginning of the train argument at the end.
[00:46:38] And it's like, but because they're waiting for, because they're waiting for Isaac, Miria and Claire.
[00:46:45] Yes.
[00:46:47] Because apparently everybody back in New York is, is buddies with Claire Stanfield and grew up with him.
[00:46:53] Yeah.
[00:46:54] Well, you know, there's always that one buddy from New York that everyone knows.
[00:47:00] Another super fucked up scene was the kid.
[00:47:04] I forget the kid's name.
[00:47:07] Um, uh, the, the little kid.
[00:47:10] Yeah.
[00:47:11] The, uh, uh, Chesla.
[00:47:14] Oh yeah.
[00:47:15] Yeah.
[00:47:15] Ches.
[00:47:15] Um, his whole backstory was super fucked where like, he was just tortured, like just on end until he fucking finally had enough and killed his, uh, he absorbed his, uh, quote unquote guardian.
[00:47:30] Yeah.
[00:47:31] Yeah.
[00:47:32] That was, that was pretty fucked up for sure.
[00:47:34] I love the scene too, where like, he's, um, he's being confronted by, um, by, uh, uh, Jerry Jewel's character.
[00:47:44] I forget the name.
[00:47:45] Oh, Claire.
[00:47:46] Yeah.
[00:47:46] Claire.
[00:47:47] And he's all like, he's like, ah, do your worst.
[00:47:49] I've been tortured by everything.
[00:47:50] Nothing frightens me.
[00:47:51] And he's in clear.
[00:47:52] It's just like, you want to bet?
[00:47:54] It's just immediately just goes super extra.
[00:47:58] Yeah.
[00:47:58] He's like, you ever heard of any Chinese styles of execution or Japanese torture?
[00:48:03] You know what?
[00:48:03] Rip your muscles apart and carve intricate things into your bones.
[00:48:07] It's like, Jesus Christ, dude.
[00:48:08] They may be a mortal, but he's still fucking eight years old.
[00:48:12] I also, I love the fact too, that he then proceeds to put him under the fucking train and just let him get dragged.
[00:48:17] Like I can't, the entire time.
[00:48:20] Yeah.
[00:48:20] That was, that was a pretty fucked up scene.
[00:48:22] And like, despite the fact that Claire does all that stuff, he just still can't help but like it.
[00:48:27] Like, I don't know what it is.
[00:48:29] He just has that magnetism about him.
[00:48:31] Well, Claire is just so fucking unhinged that like, it's, he's very, he's, he's not even like, really, he goes from being a villain to just being kind of like comedy.
[00:48:41] Character because he's so, he's so insane.
[00:48:47] For sure.
[00:48:48] Well, it's kind of all, it's like when he's fighting against, uh, uh, Lad Russo on the top of the train.
[00:48:53] It's, you literally got these two absolute piece of shits like fighting, but you just kind of like both of them because they're so ridiculous.
[00:49:01] Yeah.
[00:49:01] They're just so over the top crazy that it just, you can't help, but you would never want to be in the same room as one of them.
[00:49:08] Yeah.
[00:49:08] I'd probably, I'd probably be a little bit more open to being in the room with Claire than, than Ladd.
[00:49:13] But, uh, maybe we should talk about Ladd a little bit.
[00:49:17] So, cause he was, he was the leader of one of the factions on the train.
[00:49:21] Um, the white suits of the Russo family.
[00:49:25] And, uh, one of, like, one of the big, cause he's, you know, we obviously, we see him from episode one, but the first episode that we really get like a decent amount of focus on him, I believe it was like episode four.
[00:49:39] When you kind of get that little bit with him, uh, presenting his plan to his uncle, the leader of the Russo family.
[00:49:47] Hmm.
[00:49:48] And kind of telling him his whole idea about the, the train that he wants to do and everything.
[00:49:52] And like, right away, like these two henchmen or these two like members of the, of the, the mafia are, are talking to the boss.
[00:50:02] And Ladd just kind of walks in and just casually kills both of them.
[00:50:06] Yes.
[00:50:07] Just, just for, for kicks.
[00:50:09] He literally gets off on murdering people.
[00:50:11] That's like his entire shtick.
[00:50:13] But, but he only likes to kill people who can't even imagine the thought of themselves dying.
[00:50:20] And it doesn't matter whether they're strong or weak or, um, or good or bad.
[00:50:26] It does.
[00:50:26] It just, if death is the furthest thing from your mind, watch out for him because he will come for you.
[00:50:34] Yeah.
[00:50:34] And he'll do it with a smile on his face.
[00:50:37] Yeah.
[00:50:37] And he'll tell you every, everything he's going to do.
[00:50:41] He'll fucking, oh man.
[00:50:43] I'm very sure he drops the only F-bomb in the show.
[00:50:45] Yeah.
[00:50:46] That, that caught me off guard.
[00:50:47] I was like, oh.
[00:50:48] Yeah.
[00:50:48] Right.
[00:50:49] And I love that scene too, because he's just being a fucking goofball.
[00:50:52] Like while he's dancing on this fucking corpse's head.
[00:50:57] Legitimately anytime, like an anime that like is generally, I mean, it's swearing in anime is very common, but like when you, you don't see a lot of F-bombs all the time.
[00:51:06] So like generally whenever you get to an anime where they just straight up drop an F-bomb, it usually catches you off guard.
[00:51:11] You're like, whoa.
[00:51:12] Okay.
[00:51:13] It's like in Persona, it's like in Persona 4 whenever like a fucking F-bomb gets dropped during dialogue.
[00:51:18] Like I'm always like, damn.
[00:51:19] All right.
[00:51:20] Hmm.
[00:51:22] Oh.
[00:51:23] So yeah.
[00:51:25] And then I believe right after that scene, we get a flash forward to him on the train where he, he walks into a room with a couple of the black suits.
[00:51:37] And proceeds to beat the living shit out, like literally beat one of them to death with his bare hands, screaming about boxers of the era.
[00:51:46] Like.
[00:51:47] Yeah.
[00:51:48] And just losing his shit, laughing.
[00:51:51] Like, I don't know.
[00:51:52] It just, there's something about watching Lad on, on the screen that just gets me jazzed.
[00:51:58] Well, it's, it's the fact that it's fucking Brian Massey too.
[00:52:01] And he's just, he's doing his fucking, uh, long voice the entire time.
[00:52:05] Yeah.
[00:52:06] It's pretty, actually, I think this is, this predates him playing long.
[00:52:10] Oh yeah.
[00:52:10] I forgot.
[00:52:10] He wasn't the original long.
[00:52:13] Um, yeah, it's just, I don't know.
[00:52:16] It's just, it's just such a fun show to watch.
[00:52:18] All the characters are so fucking vibrant and alive, even though they're so fucking unrealistic.
[00:52:24] Like, um, probably talk about Jacuzzi because he's pretty important.
[00:52:30] Yeah.
[00:52:30] I was going to bring him up next.
[00:52:31] Uh, Jacuzzi and niece and Nick and Donnie is like that little group.
[00:52:37] They are such goofballs.
[00:52:39] Like they, they're like the, the incompetent group that just kind of walks into all their success by accident.
[00:52:47] Yeah.
[00:52:48] Um, and I love like their whole story too.
[00:52:51] Like, like all the stuff that led up to them being on the train.
[00:52:55] And then obviously the story of the train.
[00:52:57] Cause Jacuzzi is, he's the leader of their little like ragtag, ragtag band of, um, of like outcasts.
[00:53:05] And they are bootleggers.
[00:53:07] They, they make and sell booze.
[00:53:09] Um, and so this kid is like a total cry baby.
[00:53:13] Like he will cry at the drop of a hat.
[00:53:15] He's super fucking gullible.
[00:53:17] Cause the second he hears a story of the rail tracer, he fully believes it full tilt.
[00:53:21] Like everyone's going to die.
[00:53:22] If I don't go talk to the conductor who told this story, like, which is ironic because the conductor who told the story becomes the rail tracer.
[00:53:30] Yeah.
[00:53:32] Um, and, and he's also got a sword tattoo on his face and he like looks like a fucking 14 year old.
[00:53:39] Yeah.
[00:53:40] And his voice, his voice is the best.
[00:53:42] Cause he's like, it's exactly what you'd expect from like an awkward, like 14 year old.
[00:53:48] And then you got his girlfriend who's completely covered in, in old burn scars and is missing an eye.
[00:53:53] She's kind of bad ass though.
[00:53:54] Yeah.
[00:53:55] She's great.
[00:53:56] I love, um, niece.
[00:53:59] Um, honestly, that whole group is fun.
[00:54:01] Like anytime they're on screen, they're pretty awesome.
[00:54:03] Yeah, for sure.
[00:54:05] It, it, it, they're very endearing group of characters and they're all like very, I mean, yeah.
[00:54:10] Like while they are killing and they are, um, you know, technically doing crime by bootlegging and everything, but they're, they're very moral.
[00:54:19] I feel like they are like the moral center of that story.
[00:54:22] Hmm.
[00:54:25] Um, like they, they go out of their way to, to go up against the black suits, the white suits and hold their own.
[00:54:32] Yeah.
[00:54:33] Which is pretty impressive.
[00:54:34] All things considered.
[00:54:36] And then Isaac and Amiria just kind of show up and they fuck shit up and then disappear.
[00:54:41] It's great.
[00:54:41] Yeah.
[00:54:43] I will say this show is very quotable for sure.
[00:54:45] It is.
[00:54:46] I love the scene too, in the train where it's, it's, it's Isaac and Amiria and like Miria's in that like really tight red dress.
[00:54:52] And like someone like trips and falls and grabs the front of her dress and just fucking pulls open.
[00:54:57] Yeah.
[00:54:57] Yeah.
[00:54:57] Yeah.
[00:54:57] Jacuzzi.
[00:54:58] It just gets a full on eyeful.
[00:55:00] And like they completely after like that's done with, she just completely doesn't even acknowledge it.
[00:55:05] She's like, oh, well.
[00:55:06] Yeah.
[00:55:06] Cause she says it did, but she didn't even, didn't even occur to her that that was like a thing.
[00:55:11] And yeah, it's just like, what, like I remember seeing that.
[00:55:14] I was like, holy shit.
[00:55:16] What a, what a show.
[00:55:18] So yeah, they're, they're, they're pretty heavily involved throughout the whole train story and the, the OVA story as well.
[00:55:27] Like a Jacuzzi actually ends up ultimately going up against the leader of the black suits, which I'm guessing you didn't have a ton of context for, for the black suits whole deal.
[00:55:40] Um, yeah, not a, not a ton.
[00:55:42] I'm assuming that's explained more in the books.
[00:55:45] Uh, yes.
[00:55:46] Um, so it, if you recall, there were, there were scattered scenes throughout the show of, um, one of the original immortals from the boat who was in, in prison and like, you know, a couple of people visited him throughout.
[00:56:00] He was the, the guy played by Eric Bale with the French accent.
[00:56:05] Um, so basically a, a group of people kind of just congregated around him and kind of, kind of created a cult with him as like their, their God and leader.
[00:56:17] Uh, specifically because they wanted, they wanted to learn the secret of his immortality.
[00:56:22] And they were essentially hijacking the train because there was a Senator's wife and daughter on the train who they were going to threaten their, they were going to threaten their lives to try and get their leader Huey out of jail.
[00:56:36] And that was their whole deal.
[00:56:39] Uh, uh, and among them was Huey's daughter who becomes very important later on.
[00:56:45] I love her fight with lad too, on the, on the rooftop.
[00:56:47] That was great.
[00:56:48] There was a lot of, there was like three, three or four different rooftop fights.
[00:56:52] Yeah.
[00:56:53] There honestly was.
[00:56:54] Who's the character?
[00:56:55] That's literally the guy behind the stack of papers.
[00:56:57] You never, you never see his face.
[00:56:59] Oh, that's the, the leader of the day, the president of the daily days, the, the information broker and, and newspaper outlet.
[00:57:06] I just love any scene with him because it's literally just a giant stack of papers and you just hear his disembodied voice behind it.
[00:57:13] Yeah.
[00:57:14] I love that one scene where fucking the character who literally is goes by sugar cube.
[00:57:19] Cause he's always eating sugar cubes.
[00:57:21] Uh, he's just like, Hey, do you want one?
[00:57:22] And he's like, Oh, don't mind if I do.
[00:57:23] And like the other two characters are watching him go by the, behind the stack of papers, like in shock because apparently they've never seen his face either.
[00:57:32] Yeah.
[00:57:33] It's like goofy shit like that is always fun.
[00:57:36] Yeah.
[00:57:37] It was pretty great.
[00:57:39] Um, but yeah, that's the whole, um, the whole black suits deal.
[00:57:43] So we had the black suits, the white suits, and then Jacuzzi's gang.
[00:57:45] And it was the main three factions of the train story.
[00:57:49] Um, yeah, it's just, I don't know.
[00:57:53] There's so much to the story.
[00:57:55] And it's, it's, it's hard to quantify it in a way that makes sense because it happens so disjointedly.
[00:58:00] Like if I was talking about the books, I'd probably be able to lay it out in a straight way, but because the books actually tell it chronologically for the most part.
[00:58:09] I like how every section starts with like the, the year and like date.
[00:58:14] Hmm.
[00:58:15] Cause like literally the ending of the series, not counting the OVAs, like the, the specials.
[00:58:21] Um, it literally just cuts to a, like, it's like 2000, like.
[00:58:26] 2001, I think.
[00:58:27] 2001.
[00:58:28] Um, and it literally, it's, it's just like, it's Isaac and Miriam in like New York city, like modern day, like modern cars and everything.
[00:58:36] They're just in the seventies disco gear.
[00:58:39] And the best part is their whole line.
[00:58:40] They're like, wait a minute.
[00:58:42] Have you noticed how we never seem to age?
[00:58:44] This is like 70 years after all the events that, that the story takes place.
[00:58:49] Like they're like, it's this big revelation to them.
[00:58:52] Like, Oh my God, that's right.
[00:58:54] We haven't.
[00:58:55] They're completely still oblivious to the fact that they're immortal.
[00:58:59] Like, yeah, I love that whole bit.
[00:59:01] They just don't know that they're immortal the whole time.
[00:59:03] And like, there's a, there's a plot point because Chez is so like, um, he's so like scarred by all the, like the torture and stuff that he went through that when he, cause that's actually a rule.
[00:59:14] Uh, when you become immortal is you can't, you can't give a false name to another immortal.
[00:59:19] It's like an impulse thing.
[00:59:20] You can't help it.
[00:59:22] You have to tell them your true name.
[00:59:23] So when, when Chez is introducing himself on the train, he says his real name and he's like, Oh shit, that means there's an immortal here.
[00:59:29] And he's like freaking out about it because he doesn't know who it is.
[00:59:32] And he figures out that it's Isaac and Miriam, but they still don't know that they're immortal.
[00:59:36] Or even that immortality is even a thing.
[00:59:38] They're completely oblivious to it.
[00:59:40] Cause there's that scene where they're, they're all like upset because they think he's dying.
[00:59:44] Cause like he basically bled out under the train and, um, he's freaking out.
[00:59:50] Cause he's like, he's like, this is where I die.
[00:59:51] But then like, they don't do anything cause they have no idea.
[00:59:54] And he's like, what?
[00:59:55] Yeah.
[00:59:56] It's, it's really bizarre, but it's, it's very fun.
[00:59:59] Very fun.
[00:59:59] That scene where his, uh, blood is like slowly coming back to him from like the miles behind them on the ground.
[01:00:07] Um, and it freaks out all the other, uh, the people fighting on the top.
[01:00:11] Cause they're like, what the fuck, what is this?
[01:00:12] Like, I don't.
[01:00:13] Yeah.
[01:00:14] Like the, the leader of the black suits is like blasting it with a flamethrower.
[01:00:17] Cause he's like, what the hell?
[01:00:18] Oh, his, his fucking death was the most like hilarious death in the series.
[01:00:22] Cause he's got a flamethrower and he just like falls off the train and lands right on the tank.
[01:00:27] And then just boom.
[01:00:29] Like just, yeah.
[01:00:30] I love that too.
[01:00:31] Because like, I, that only, he only lost because Isaac and Miria were hanging onto the train by a rope that, um, that Donnie, like the, the big dude from Jacuzzi's group was trying to pull them up on.
[01:00:44] And he just fucking clothesline the black suit.
[01:00:47] Yeah.
[01:00:47] Yeah.
[01:01:13] And broke his tank.
[01:01:19] He's a very important person in that group.
[01:01:52] He's a very important person in the role of the black suit.
[01:02:15] And he's so over the top when he plays these characters.
[01:02:15] But up to this point, he's like the biggest piece of shit in the show.
[01:02:18] He's just, this show is, this show is literally a giant entire ensemble cast of pieces of shit.
[01:02:24] When you really think about it.
[01:02:25] Yeah.
[01:02:26] Even, even the, even the good characters are technically like kind of pieces of shit.
[01:02:29] Yeah.
[01:02:29] I mean, it's like, like Isaac and Miria are like the best characters, but they are also kind of pieces of shit just for the shit they've done in the past.
[01:02:38] Yeah.
[01:02:39] Granted, they're more just kind of like by proxy.
[01:02:43] Lovable idiots.
[01:02:44] Yeah.
[01:02:45] Um, but yeah, like, uh, so Dallas is, he was, um, he was like the heir to this really rich family's fortune.
[01:02:56] But, uh, actually I think he was the youngest son, but his, his father and his older brother were both killed by a character who shows up later.
[01:03:06] And, uh, Isaac and Miria stole their entire family fortune because Eve was upset about it causing, uh, dissension in their family.
[01:03:17] So he was all like fucking pissy about that because, uh, it never says it in the show, but in the book it actually, uh, says that he was actually, um, planning on killing his father and brother for that inheritance.
[01:03:30] Mm.
[01:03:31] Um, and, uh, they pretty much just like beat up and rob anyone who happens to fucking cross their path on the street.
[01:03:39] Yeah.
[01:03:41] Uh, including the old man who had distilled the liquor of immortality in the first place.
[01:03:46] Hmm.
[01:03:47] Which.
[01:03:48] Yep.
[01:03:49] Yeah.
[01:03:50] And then they, uh, proceed to get their asses kicked a lot.
[01:03:54] There is a lot of ass kicking in this show, like just in general.
[01:03:57] Oh yeah.
[01:03:58] It's a very action packed show for sure.
[01:04:01] Um, but like, even though a lot of it is very over the top and like definitely taking it to an extreme, like a lot of it is pretty rooted in reality.
[01:04:10] You know, putting aside the immortal stuff.
[01:04:12] Yeah.
[01:04:13] If the mortal stuff wasn't there, this would be actually a pretty realistic show.
[01:04:17] Yeah.
[01:04:18] Yeah.
[01:04:18] Especially with the way that like, like in the beginning, like one of the very first scenes where like Firo is getting, uh, jumped by the homeless guy.
[01:04:26] And like, he goes to like grab the knife and like the guy pulls back the knife, like in surprise and his fingers just come right off.
[01:04:34] Hmm.
[01:04:35] Um, and, uh, yeah, that was, that was the first scene where you realize, oh, uh, this show is not very kind to hands and fingers.
[01:04:44] No, not at all.
[01:04:45] A lot of people lose fingers in this show.
[01:04:49] Yeah.
[01:04:51] They get them back a lot of the time, but they, they also lose them a lot.
[01:04:55] Yeah.
[01:04:56] Uh, but we also have Ennis who is a homunculus created by Zillard.
[01:05:02] Um, which I think it's like a failed homunculus.
[01:05:06] Technically, because I mean, this isn't something you would learn from the anime itself, but the devil that was summoned on the ship, he's not actually a devil.
[01:05:14] He's a homunculus.
[01:05:15] He's a perfected real homunculus where like the actual concept of one where, uh, like I, a true homunculus is like a, a conduit of information essentially.
[01:05:25] Like just a, a wellspring of knowledge that no human has any business knowing, which is why he knows how to make the immortality liquor in the first place.
[01:05:33] Yeah.
[01:05:34] You have to like speak to people telepathically and stuff like that.
[01:05:37] Take different forms.
[01:05:38] So on.
[01:05:41] Um, and there's a bunch of like minor characters like, um, like Mize is kind of an important, he's a very important character actually.
[01:05:48] Cause he's the one who summons the devil in the first place, but he's also very minor in the actual story.
[01:05:53] Yeah.
[01:05:54] Um, he's kind of more of a conduit to, to the events that, that happened throughout.
[01:06:00] Um, and then you got, uh, the smiley guy.
[01:06:07] Hmm.
[01:06:07] Um, and he's, he's really fun.
[01:06:09] He isn't, he doesn't have a whole lot of screen time, but he's, he's a very fun character.
[01:06:14] Um, you do get more, more of him in the books.
[01:06:17] He actually, he gets a storyline.
[01:06:18] He has a whole book to himself.
[01:06:21] Uh, and it takes place in the two thousands.
[01:06:24] Oh really?
[01:06:25] Which is pretty cool.
[01:06:26] Yeah.
[01:06:26] That's the one thing about the books is even though it's mostly, um, chronological, occasionally it will just jump forward into the early two thousands.
[01:06:34] And then jump back like in a later book, like the, really the fifth, like the first four books take place in like the late twenties, early thirties.
[01:06:43] And then the fifth book jumps forward to 2001.
[01:06:46] And then the sixth book goes back to the early thirties.
[01:06:50] Um, which is kind of cool.
[01:06:52] Cause you kind of get to see like, you know, where some of the characters end up decades in the future and stuff like that, which is, it's interesting.
[01:07:02] Um, and it does add like an extra level of like, like mystery to it because there's a lot of things that kind of happen behind the scenes in those intervening years that you don't know about until later.
[01:07:14] Um, I'm trying to think if there are any other major characters we haven't touched on yet.
[01:07:23] Oh, we didn't talk about lad's girlfriend.
[01:07:26] Oh yeah.
[01:07:27] She's there.
[01:07:28] Yeah.
[01:07:29] She's, she's the reason he got thrown off the train in the first place.
[01:07:32] Yeah.
[01:07:34] Um, their relationship is weird.
[01:07:39] Most of the relationships in the show are kind of weird.
[01:07:42] Like it's weird that the health, the healthiest relationship seems to be Isaac and Maria.
[01:07:46] Yeah.
[01:07:48] Well, I mean, I, I give Firo and Ennis a pass.
[01:07:50] They, they do ultimately end up getting married.
[01:07:52] It takes about 60 years, but it does happen.
[01:07:56] Um, there's actually a, a two part, uh, two book, two part story.
[01:08:02] Uh, that is like their honeymoon.
[01:08:06] Um, but yeah, I mean, I guess that's kind of like the major, I think we've covered pretty much more of the major stuff, except for like the OVA stuff with, um, Graham Spector.
[01:08:20] Who was an interesting, interesting last minute edition.
[01:08:24] Domino's.
[01:08:25] Yeah.
[01:08:26] The domino's part.
[01:08:28] Oh, it's a, it's a game for children who don't know how to actually play domino's.
[01:08:32] And of course, yeah, it's, it's Isaac and Maria putting it together.
[01:08:36] Yep.
[01:08:37] But like everyone's super invested in it, which is really funny.
[01:08:40] And then Firo accidentally knocks it over.
[01:08:42] Hmm.
[01:08:43] They're like, no, they're all excited about it and shit.
[01:08:49] Um, so, uh, the whole Graham Spector thing.
[01:08:53] So this is like after the train.
[01:08:56] Um, so Graham Spector is a character in New York who, uh, like idolizes Lad Russo.
[01:09:02] Like they met a few years beforehand and they're like best friends pretty much.
[01:09:07] And he's crazy, but in a different way, he likes to break things.
[01:09:11] That's kind of his whole thing.
[01:09:13] And he's just like super eccentric, like outrageously where I can't even begin to describe this a lot.
[01:09:22] Like I said, there's a lot of nut jobs in this show and it makes the show very entertaining.
[01:09:26] Oh yeah.
[01:09:27] Even when you have no idea what's going on, it's extremely entertaining the whole way through.
[01:09:32] Um, and for some reason he just has like super strength for no reason.
[01:09:37] Um, well, you know, it happens.
[01:09:40] It's like the one case in this, in this series where it's just like, that makes no sense.
[01:09:44] Like he's way too strong.
[01:09:46] Like he just like starts destroying the whole fucking like cement floor.
[01:09:52] I just, I love the fact that he's fucking, it's Chris Patton.
[01:09:56] Yeah.
[01:09:57] Chris Patton being Chris Patton.
[01:09:59] Yeah.
[01:09:59] It's fantastic.
[01:10:00] Um, and of course he ends up fighting, uh, Claire because, you know,
[01:10:06] of course, lad's little like protege has to fight the guy who beat him.
[01:10:10] Yeah.
[01:10:12] Um, which was really fun.
[01:10:13] I love that whole, but I, I love the fight between Chani and lad as well on top of the,
[01:10:19] uh, the train because yeah, I, I just loved lad's reactions to everything that was happening.
[01:10:24] Like every time she would like deflect a bullet with her knife or something, he just like,
[01:10:27] did that just happen?
[01:10:29] He's like, whoa, he's like, I'm going to enjoy killing you.
[01:10:35] Yeah.
[01:10:36] It's just fucking fantastic.
[01:10:37] And then when he's fighting, uh, fighting Claire, he's like, Hey, I have first dibs on
[01:10:41] her.
[01:10:42] I get to kill her first.
[01:10:44] For real.
[01:10:46] It's just, uh, just the, the way that the characters interact throughout this show is
[01:10:50] just so fun.
[01:10:52] It's like, I honestly, I can't gush enough about this show.
[01:10:54] It's one of those things you kind of have to experience, which is really a shame because
[01:10:58] of how unavailable it is.
[01:11:01] Yeah.
[01:11:02] I mean, you can get the bootleg.
[01:11:04] I paid like, I don't know, maybe $20 for the bootleg that I sent you.
[01:11:08] So like, you can get it, but you know, it's not going to be the best quality, but it's still
[01:11:14] worth it.
[01:11:15] The picture was fine.
[01:11:17] Like for what it was, it was just sometimes the disc didn't want to read.
[01:11:20] Yeah.
[01:11:22] Yeah.
[01:11:22] Um, I will say though, if anyone is on the, uh, either the super pod or, um, the GNC discords,
[01:11:32] I am fully open and willing to doing watch parties as I have it on my hard drive and can
[01:11:38] anytime do a watch party of that.
[01:11:40] So if anyone's interested, let me know.
[01:11:42] Cause I would, I would love for more people to experience this show.
[01:11:45] Cause it is, it is a time for sure.
[01:11:48] I, I wonder who owns the rights to it, honestly.
[01:11:51] Cause I feel like that's the reason why it's fucking in this weird limbo.
[01:11:55] I'm actually kind of curious.
[01:11:56] I have no idea.
[01:11:57] Honestly, I feel like it's an Aniplex show, but I mean, I want to, I want to say Aniplex
[01:12:05] cause Aniplex seems to always be the one that holds these shows in fucking purgatory.
[01:12:09] Yeah.
[01:12:10] Yep.
[01:12:10] Aniplex of America.
[01:12:11] Of course.
[01:12:12] Yeah.
[01:12:13] It's always fucking Aniplex.
[01:12:14] Aniplex.
[01:12:15] Well, they own all these shows and they have to hold them in purgatory forever.
[01:12:19] Yeah.
[01:12:20] Which is a real shame because a lot of them are so fun to watch.
[01:12:24] Even if it's not like a super engaging story, it's just super fucking fun.
[01:12:28] Like I've never watched Baccano and not had a great time.
[01:12:33] See, I feel like this is one of those shows that if it came out now, Netflix would have
[01:12:36] picked it up.
[01:12:38] Yeah.
[01:12:38] Yeah.
[01:12:39] And I would love a continuation cause there's so much, so much more to the story.
[01:12:44] Like there's a whole storyline in the books where, um, where, uh, Huey, the, the French
[01:12:52] guy gets sent to Alcatraz.
[01:12:54] Lad Russo also gets sent to Alcatraz, which it was a whole thing in the series where he
[01:12:59] wanted to kill Huey just because of Johnny.
[01:13:03] And Firo also gets sent to Alcatraz.
[01:13:06] They're all in Alcatraz at the same time and craziness ensues.
[01:13:11] Um, there's all, there's some hive mind stuff that gets brought in later.
[01:13:15] Um, there's plenty of characters that weren't introduced in the show that are introduced
[01:13:19] later on.
[01:13:20] There's a character named Christopher who is just, just very fun.
[01:13:24] Uh, and I really wish he had been a part of the anime.
[01:13:27] Um, I don't know.
[01:13:28] It's just, there's so much potential and there's so many stories that it really is upsetting
[01:13:34] that we'll probably never get that anime form.
[01:13:38] The sad part is that you can't even say it was because it didn't do well here because
[01:13:42] it did.
[01:13:42] It was that it bombed in Japan and unfortunately that's where it matters.
[01:13:47] Yeah, for sure.
[01:13:49] Uh, and this one works so well as a live action.
[01:13:53] I think because like the, really the only like real supernatural aspect of it is the immortality
[01:13:59] itself.
[01:14:00] Then the devouring people through the hands, that would be probably the only thing that
[01:14:05] would be hard to transfer to live action, but true.
[01:14:10] I'm sure they can figure it out though.
[01:14:12] I mean, if all of your budget is, if all of your budget for special effects is going into
[01:14:17] CGI blood and, and the act of eating people, which doesn't happen that often anyway.
[01:14:23] Um, it's only the one time it's seen up close and it's the, honestly the most disturbing
[01:14:27] point in the series.
[01:14:29] Easily, easily.
[01:14:31] Um, but yeah, there's, there's, there's so much potential there.
[01:14:36] Like there's over 20 books and, uh, for, for anyone who's interested and, um, doesn't want
[01:14:43] to go out of their way to try and get the, the anime.
[01:14:46] Um, the novels are available.
[01:14:49] They have been translated and brought over here and they are now getting official audio
[01:14:53] books on audible.
[01:14:55] Uh, I believe the first two were out.
[01:14:57] The third one will be coming soon.
[01:14:59] So look forward to those.
[01:15:02] Um, I'm certainly excited about it.
[01:15:06] And they actually got a dude with a pretty thick Brooklyn accent to read it.
[01:15:09] So that's pretty cool.
[01:15:10] Nice.
[01:15:12] He does a good job too.
[01:15:14] For sure.
[01:15:19] Um, I think that just about does it.
[01:15:23] Yeah, I think we pretty much covered up most of the bases.
[01:15:27] I feel like I'm going to, I'm going to go back later and be like, fuck, I forgot this
[01:15:29] character, but yeah, it's one of those things where this is an ensemble series.
[01:15:35] There's a lot of characters and they pop in and out consistently throughout.
[01:15:40] Yes.
[01:15:41] Um, like we didn't, I know we didn't talk about a bunch of the daily days guys.
[01:15:44] We didn't even touch on Dallas's sister, but I mean, that's kind of a minor point anyway.
[01:15:50] Yeah.
[01:15:52] It's just kind of one of those things where the show, a discussion of the show sounds
[01:15:57] disjointed because the show itself is incredibly disjointed.
[01:16:00] Yeah, for sure.
[01:16:02] And while it is confusing and like, while you're watching it, you kind of scratch your head
[01:16:07] like, why do they do it this way?
[01:16:08] Um, when you really think about it, the series is only 16 episodes and there's four different
[01:16:13] storylines that happen throughout.
[01:16:16] So if you were to tell it chronologically, no, not only what a lot of like, you know,
[01:16:21] like the mystique intention be taken out because each of these arcs would only be about three
[01:16:26] episodes long.
[01:16:26] And so in that way, I can kind of see why they did it this way.
[01:16:33] Honestly, I think they should have just foregone the series in general and just done movies
[01:16:38] like one movie per storyline would have been perfect.
[01:16:41] Yeah.
[01:16:41] Yeah.
[01:16:42] That probably would have made more sense, but movies weren't as common back in the day.
[01:16:46] Like this came out in 2007, I want to say.
[01:16:49] Oh, I think it was a wait.
[01:16:50] Um, but yeah, I think it must've, I think, I think it came out in Japan in 07.
[01:16:57] We got the dub in 08.
[01:16:58] That's okay.
[01:16:59] That's, that's, um, but yeah, it, it was definitely at a point in time where, um, with the exception
[01:17:06] of like studio Ghibli movies, um, like big theatrical release anime movies weren't super,
[01:17:13] um, like super consistent at a time.
[01:17:17] Nah, there'd be like a few here and there, but for the most part, it was very far in between.
[01:17:22] Yeah.
[01:17:23] They were still kind of doing more like the, um, like the, the mini movies that they would
[01:17:28] do at like film festivals and stuff in Japan, you know, like, you know, like the, the early
[01:17:34] drag movie kind of style, you know, and, um, some other series that did the same thing,
[01:17:39] but yeah.
[01:17:42] But, um, yeah.
[01:17:44] So I think that'll wrap up this discussion of Baccano.
[01:17:48] It was, I will say it was really good getting to finally experience it.
[01:17:52] Uh, out of curiosity, what did you give it on?
[01:17:56] Uh, I gave it, I think I gave it an eight out of 10.
[01:18:01] That's fair.
[01:18:01] An 80% on a any list.
[01:18:05] That's fair.
[01:18:06] Yeah, I definitely, as much as I love the story, I definitely, because of the confusing
[01:18:12] nature of the structure itself, um, for that alone, you can't exactly give it top marks,
[01:18:18] but no, I mean, I don't know if it is engaging.
[01:18:22] The characters are so vibrant and alive.
[01:18:24] That's so entertaining.
[01:18:25] There's so many good interactions between the characters.
[01:18:29] It, you, even if you're confused watching it, you will have a great time.
[01:18:34] I guarantee it.
[01:18:36] Yeah.
[01:18:37] Like, I don't know if it would make my top 25 list, but it's definitely a show that
[01:18:41] I consider.
[01:18:42] I consider watching again at some point.
[01:18:45] Hmm.
[01:18:46] And I, I definitely highly recommend, uh, anyone check out the books because it's, it's a very
[01:18:52] fun story.
[01:18:52] And it was, uh, where I left off, they were definitely building up to something, uh, to
[01:18:57] something big.
[01:18:58] So definitely worth it.
[01:19:02] Nice.
[01:19:04] But with that, everybody, once again, thank you for joining us on geek addicts.
