[00:00:22] Hello, hello. Welcome to A Novel Console, your weekly podcast where we talk about books, games, food and stuff that cut our attention during the week.
[00:00:28] This week is another loading memories episode and I have one of my favorite people, third official co- unofficial co-host of A Novel Console, host of the secondary host of the 3DO show. And what was the other one still listening? The King Crimson podcast? Frame by frame.
[00:00:53] Frame by frame. Thrac is here with us. Hey, hi buddy. I'm okay. I'm still a little sick but I'm getting better. Like today's the first day where I'm like, oh, I think my energy is starting to come back.
[00:01:06] So I think I'm finally on the upswing. So that's good. It's been like two weeks dude. I've been out for less than a week. I got sick on. Are you sure? Yeah.
[00:01:17] I got like really sick on the second and as the day we're recording this is the seventh. So it's been like five days or I felt like shit.
[00:01:28] I mean, if you want to talk about mental health, it's been fucked for the last 20 plus years but you know, we're not here to talk about that. We started playing Diablo and it was scratching both of our brains in a specific spot that we didn't know we had.
[00:01:43] Oh yeah. We've both been playing like a dragon. Right. I don't know how far you're in. I'm in chapter five. I got to the labyrinth and I did like two rounds of the labyrinth and I haven't touched it since because I haven't had time.
[00:02:00] Well, I got past Danny Trejo which that was cool. That was so cool. And then that's when I got sick and then I just haven't bothered picking up the game yet again.
[00:02:10] But what I like about Infinite Wealth, it's the same with Seven where I can take breaks and come back and I'll be fine because the story is so simple. Right. But for some reason I've been in like NES mode. I've just been playing a bunch of NES games.
[00:02:24] I've beaten like four of them already. I don't know why. Maybe it's because I saw, if you know who Jeff Gertzman is. He has a little, he's like a games journalist and he has a side series where he's scientifically in quotes ranking all the NES games.
[00:02:40] He's just picking like random games and playing them and just putting them in like a list. And it's made me go back and play them, some of them from my childhood which we can talk about.
[00:02:50] And then other ones that are just like, I still have yet to sit down and play it but there's a game on the NES called Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom. And I'm told it's not bad. It's like a text adventure kind of game. Okay.
[00:03:04] We'll see. But I've just been playing I Beat Zelda 1 finally. That is an achievement. Well, I got to fill the Zelda quota so I got to do Zelda 2 later this year. Probably not. Probably in a little bit. And I finally ordered Link Between Worlds.
[00:03:23] I need to play that one. Oh, the 3DS one. Yeah, I finally ordered that on eBay. So because that's one I need to play. I need to play. But yeah, but long roundabout way of being like, I'm doing okay. I guess. Okay. That's good. Getting better. Yes. Yes.
[00:03:43] Can't get no worse. Oh yeah. Man, I can never get into the NES. I don't know what it is about it that just repels me. Because I've like I've told you before, I've beaten Mario 1, but then I can't get past the first world of Mario 3. Yeah.
[00:04:06] And I was just casually playing it today and got to World 2. Like not even trying. There's something about it. Like I know that there might be games there that I would like, but I don't know which ones they are.
[00:04:23] I think how to even go about it because it just feels so old and restrictive to me. Okay. Have you ever heard of the game Blaster Master? Yes, that game fucks. Well, you've played. So you've played the original Blaster Master.
[00:04:40] I've played one, two and three a little bit on the switch. Okay. The versions that came out of Switch. Okay. Yeah, then well, yeah, you probably like that. Basically get the NES app on the switch and just kind of go through it
[00:04:55] because there's some really good games on there. So just kind of go through that. I've always been interested in Star Tropics. Star Tropics fucks. Well, maybe that's an inappropriate say because you're playing as a little kid, but it's like American Zelda.
[00:05:16] The whole game was designed to be specifically targeted to American audiences. I think your main attack is like a yo-yo, like your character is a big fan of baseball. It's very like Ameribu, but it's pretty cool. It's like a weird...
[00:05:33] It's like if Zelda was more of an RPG, if that makes any sense. But yeah, I need to sit down and beat that game properly because I've tried playing it. It's fun. Someday, someday I'll beat my first NES game
[00:05:49] because the version of Mario 1 that I beat was the one for the Game Boy Color. Oh yeah, Mario... I don't like that version. The screen crunch. I just can't do it, man. It's bad. Yeah, I think it...
[00:06:05] Man, all of these recordings have been like one after the other so they're kind of like melding together, but I think it was with Bill that we talked about it. And he said that apparently you can zoom out in the game so that it's not as crunchy.
[00:06:18] I did not know that. Right? Like that surprised me. It would be nice because it's like way too zoomed in for my tastes. Yeah, yeah, no. I still don't know how I beat it with how zoomed in it is. I had memories of it being good
[00:06:38] and then I saw Karen's nephew playing it and I was like, oh shit. That is close. Well, I think when you're younger, you don't think about those things as much. You just kind of accept it, you know? Yeah, I guess.
[00:06:56] I was like what, 12 or 13 when I played it? Yeah, maybe. Maybe. I thought the legacy of Goku 1 was good and it's actually a terrible game. Oh yeah, that is a bad game. So you're here to talk games, old games specifically, games you played growing up. Memories.
[00:07:19] Right, so tell me about them. What was your first game ever? See, that's a tough one because my earliest gaming memory in general, there's actually even pictures that prove it. I did not pull one out is watching my older siblings play the NES
[00:07:40] because we had it in the house. They were probably playing Mario 1, could have been that or Mario 3 or even Dr. Mario, but I do remember it being a Mario game, you know? And just the look on my face of just like, whoa, what is this?
[00:07:56] You know, which I think is a lot of kids reactions to when they start playing video games. It's like, whoa, this is cool and you can control the action. Right? But we didn't just have an NES in the household. We also had a Sega Genesis.
[00:08:09] And the Sega Genesis was the one that really clicked with me. And the first game I ever played on it, it was either Sonic 2 or Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. I know those are like the first- Jesus Christ! Fucking Valley! I know.
[00:08:29] Those were like the first two that really caught me, you know? Yeah, for completely different reasons. I think UMK3 kind of desensitized me as well, but that's another topic. But I remember I really liked the cover because we used to have the...
[00:08:48] It was the cardboard box for it. I think because later Sega Genesis games went away with the plastic cases and had the cardboard boxes. So we had a couple of those in the boxes. It was that one, Jurassic Park Rampage Edition, I think World Series Baseball 95,
[00:09:06] maybe another game or two. And we had some that were just the cartridges as well. But we had a bunch of Genesis stuff, a bunch of NES stuff. And in fact, funnily enough, right here I found a box.
[00:09:19] And in this box are all the cased Genesis games that I grew up with. So I can get... There's one that's missing, and it's a game called Astrix and the Great Rescue. Now this one I bought myself, I remember my granddad taking me to...
[00:09:37] You've probably never heard of it. It's similar to like a Walmart, but around it like a more Midwestern one called Myer. And they had like a little section of just a bunch of cased Genesis games like Brand New Seal, they're probably like five bucks or something, right?
[00:09:52] And I remember going through it and just being mesmerized by everything. And I picked Astrix and the Great Rescue. Now the cover of it's really cool if you ever want to look it up. But that game, great soundtrack, but it's rough because it's like an action platformer,
[00:10:11] but your punch has no range. It's ridiculous. It's absolutely ridiculous. But in my head, there was another game I looked at that it was always like, ooh, I should have picked that one. And for years and years, I was like,
[00:10:27] what game was that that was in my head? And I've looked at all the Sega Genesis covers to try to be like which one was it? And I think I know which one it was. It was Streets of Rage 3, I think. Because whenever I look at that cover,
[00:10:42] it does something in the back of my brain that's like, oh, that's familiar. Right? And in that game, I don't know if you ever played it, but it's kind of cool. You can play as a kangaroo, like a boxing kangaroo
[00:10:54] or an old man robot as long as your normal Streets of Rage characters. It's not as beloved as 2, but it's still fairly solid. But anyways, we can go through some of these case Genesis games I have. I'll try to be quick with them.
[00:11:09] I've never played Streets of Rage 3. It's not bad. It's not as good as 2. 2 is the one, 2 and 4 are the ones to play. But anyways, real quick, we have Mario and Dreddy Racing, which is just a racing game. It's fine. We have the Batman Forever game.
[00:11:35] Speaking of Mortal Kombat, and this game sucks, right? But as a kid, you don't think about it. You just play the games, right? Okay, let's pause on Batman Forever. Let's dive into that one. Okay, continue what you were saying before we go into it.
[00:11:54] Well, because I've beaten this game. I know how to beat this game, and it's not great, but you know what in the back of my head? I have a little bit of a soft spot for it, but I think it's just because I grew up with it.
[00:12:09] Is that the one where they digitized Batman and Robin, and it's kind of like a multi-level side scroller with beat-em-up that's fucking atrocious? It's really horrible to play. Yes, the controls are the exact same as Mortal Kombat. Oh, fuck. Like it's the exact same moveset,
[00:12:34] but turn that into a 2D platform or beat-em-up? No. But I know this game very well. In fact, in here is like a little fighting mode where you can choose either Batman or Robin or the main villains or the henchmen and have a little fight.
[00:12:51] That's kind of the preferred way to play it, to be honest. Yeah, we have that. I remember playing that on Super Nintendo. Yeah, it's the same game. And PlayStation, and it was fucking awful. Yeah, it's not a good game, but when you play games as a kid,
[00:13:08] you're like, eh, I kind of like it. Yeah, I played it when I knew that games could be bad. Yeah, speaking of, I will defend this game. This game is a banger, Boogerman. Boogerman. I fucking love Boogerman. Look at his big-ass chin.
[00:13:24] He's got a big-ass chin, and he's got holes everywhere. His toes coming out of his socks, and he farts on people. It is so stupid, but goddamn it, I love this game. It's so good. Yeah, I remember when I was in elementary school,
[00:13:40] there was a kid that was telling me about Boogerman. And I thought that was the funniest shit ever, and I went to his house like one weekend, and we played it, and it was a game. It's a game. I've never beaten it.
[00:13:56] But maybe one of these days I should do that properly. I had the Jungle Book game, part of like that Aladdin Lion King thing. They threw Jungle Book. This is the one I grew up with, and it's a solid game. I've beaten it. Let's see. Hard driving.
[00:14:13] Oh fuck. This game sucks. This was the first game I ever played that made me realize video games could be bad. It's like a 3D driving game. I don't know if you can see with the screenshots. Oh, it looks like Desert Driver,
[00:14:31] that bus game where you drive a real bus to Vegas to see the Penn and Teller show. Yeah, but Desert Bus is better than this. Because you're on this race course, and there's a bridge that's out that you jump over. There's a loop that you do.
[00:14:51] But it's so fucking slow. The turns are just ridiculous. The only good part of the game is when you hit something, your windshield cracks, and then there's a credible zoom out of the instant replay of watching you hit.
[00:15:07] And then when you hit, your car just gets set on fire. When you get a chance, look up gameplay of this. It is terrible, but it's burned into my brain. Let's see. Madden 96. It's Madden. Of course. I like Madden, which should be known at this point.
[00:15:26] Oh, Madden 95, which is the better of the two. Ooh, NBA Jam. Turn it in. Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I remember we... Oh yeah, in here we still have the notebook paper that my brother wrote of all of the cheat codes if you wanted to play as Bill Clinton.
[00:15:49] Yeah, but both of my older siblings don't really play games anymore. In fact, I gave all of my NES stuff to him just because I thought he would want it, right? I don't even know if he plays it, because I'll get into that when we get into NES.
[00:16:04] NHL 95. Great game. Oh fuck. This might be one of the most hated games of all time for me. Pac-Man 2. The New Adventures. Fuck, let me see that face. Hold it a little bit down. There we go. Jesus fucking Christ. That is amazing. This game hurts my soul.
[00:16:30] It is so bad. One of these days I need to... Everybody listening, if you want me to describe the hatred of this game, like have me come on your show and we'll talk about it. I have things to say, but I'll reserve it. RBI Baseball 3.
[00:16:54] Which is fine, right? Side pocket. I've always had a love for pool, in general. In fact, that same granddad who I got asterisks with, he had a pool table in his basement. So I used to go down there and play it all the time.
[00:17:13] I've always had a saucepot for billiards. I don't know if I'm any good at it or not, probably not. I'm dog shit at it and I still love playing pool. The main course, I guess we'll do it now. Sonic 1. Right. Sonic 2. And Sonic 3. Sonic 3.
[00:17:31] We didn't have Sonic and Knuckles, but I ended up grabbing it later. So I did the Sonic 3 and Knuckles combo cart properly. With the stack technology, whatever the fuck it is. Yeah, the lock-on technology, yes. Ooh, this game slaps. Sunset Riders. Yeah, that game was fucking dope.
[00:17:55] That game was great. I think it's like the arcade, Super Nintendo version is different than the Genesis version, but this is the version I know. And yeah, I think I've beaten the final boss. I can get to the final boss no problem,
[00:18:09] but I think I've only beaten him once in my entire life because he is ridiculously hard, but still love it. You know, good old Konami back when they didn't suck. Oh yeah. Ooh. Konassles. All-time classic. I still play this game to this day. Tecmo Super Bowl.
[00:18:27] The best football game probably, you know? I know you don't give a shit, but hey. Yeah, sports are not my thing. A lot of sports games, but the Genesis was known for its sports games, right? Let's see. Two more games. Wheel of Fortune. Of course. Yeah.
[00:18:44] Very on-brand for Tec. Oh yes. I used to play this game with my mom growing up though, so a lot of fond memories of that. And then lastly is WrestleMania the arcade game, which is actually a really cool like... It's like a fighting game,
[00:19:01] but it has some wrestling in it and everything, but it's silly, you know what I mean? Like it has like the Undertaker, like shooting actual ghouls out of his hands to stun enemies. It's pretty crazy, but it's a lot of fun.
[00:19:15] But yeah, that mixed with a couple other... We had Sonic Spin Ball. I think it was the original Madden on Genesis and a couple of other games. That's what I grew up with on the Genesis or the Sega, as some people like to call it.
[00:19:31] And then on the NES front, I wish I had all those games because it'd be fun to go through. We had Mario 1, Mario 3, Tecmo Bowl, like the older Tecmo Bowl. Those are the games I remember being good. And actually in my NES playing recently,
[00:19:49] I've been playing this game that we had, but I never really played it because it weirded me out as a kid. But I want you to look it up. It's called The Adventures of Rad Gravity. Like just look it up. It is... it's weird,
[00:20:09] but god damn it, it's kind of good. Like I'm like happy. The Adventures of Rad Gravity, yes. Enough. What the fuck? I get it, why weirded you out. That shit is fucking nightmare fuel. How big his fucking head is. Yeah, like he's got the gigachad chin,
[00:20:30] the Elvis Curl, and it's like... Right. And his best friend is like a robot that is just a sentient eye and you're just traveling the galaxy for some reason. I don't know why I'm doing what I'm doing. And then there are levels where
[00:20:46] the entire level is upside down and you have to find the machine to flip it back right side up and you're like shooting sharks out of the sky. It's weird man, but it's kind of not bad. I see here a screenshot of him fighting
[00:21:02] like some brain tethered to a ball. Yeah. And the brain is kind of sitting in like a lounge chair, a futuristic lounge chair. Man that was like the... it was the Wild West of gaming man. People were just coming up with
[00:21:19] any weird shit they could come up with you know? They were just piecing shit together and throwing it out. Yeah. And then outside of that I know we had some other sports games but I didn't play those that much but also I grew up with crap like
[00:21:36] Where's Waldo on the NES. I can beat that game in like four minutes. Honestly, if I tried to speedrun it I could probably get ranked. Like genuinely. Like Guinness World Book of Records. No speedrun.net. Like speedrun.net. Like I could probably be ranked in there
[00:21:54] because it's a terrible game but I'm good at it. You know? We also had the Ghostbusters game for NES which that game is so bad. So bad. And the only NES game we had in box was Home Alone 2 Lost in New York. Another bad game.
[00:22:14] So I grew up with a lot of bad games as you can tell but we had more good games on the Sega Genesis. So that's what I was used to and I remember coming home from elementary school and playing them all the time. It was just my thing.
[00:22:31] And we also had a Sega CD for the Genesis funnily enough. And we had like, I think we had Mortal Kombat CD. We had, I think it's a game called Prize Fighter. It's like an FMV game, like an FMV boxing game. And we had Soul Feast
[00:22:50] which is like a pretty cool like shmup and a game called like the Adventures of Sherlock Holmes which is like a point and click detective mystery game. But you know, as a kid I'm like, I don't know what this shit is. I'm not good at it.
[00:23:05] So we didn't play the Sega CD that much but I remember it was the early 2000s and my parents were like, oh what do you want for Christmas? And you know, because I was getting into video games
[00:23:20] and I was like, oh can I get the next Sega console or the new Sega thing? But this was like 2002. So Dreamcast was dead. So I think it was somebody tried to say nicely to me like oh Sega doesn't make consoles anymore.
[00:23:38] So then I was bummed about that. So I was like, oh can I get the next Nintendo system? And they're like, and I was like what is that? They're like the GameCube? I was like yes, a GameCube please. I'll take one GameCube please. One GameCube.
[00:23:54] And sure enough that Christmas I got it and I still have that GameCube to this day. It's actually in the closet behind me. I'll never get rid of it. Did it come with a memory card or did you have to explain
[00:24:06] to your parents that you needed a memory card to play it? Yes, yes I did. Oh man. I forget which game it was because mine came with the Zelda Collectors Edition. So that disc was Zelda 1, Zelda 2, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and the demo for Wind Waker.
[00:24:23] Like that was my first time ever playing Zelda in general. And I think it's why I don't really like Zelda games because jumping into those not knowing what to do I was like I don't really like these that much. But the demo of Wind Waker caught my eye
[00:24:40] like completely you know. I mean with it being like cel shaded it's perfect for like a kid right? To be like oh this game is beautiful. Look at this. And I used to, it gave you a 20 minute time limit no matter what you did.
[00:24:57] So I used to race that time limit. Like I would, because basically you get on the boat and you sail to Dragon Roost I believe. And to Ganon's Island. Maybe? Dragon Roost is where the first dungeon is and that's after like Winsat. Whatever the Kakariko Village Island is.
[00:25:21] Yeah, basically. I think it's just the sailing to Dragon Roost Island because it's fairly early in the game. So I remember getting in the boat because you already have the boat you already have the King of the Red Lions and I sail. Okay, okay.
[00:25:38] So I get there like as fast as I can. And then I get there and just start you know whacking things doing Zelda stuff. And I'm having a great time. And then it times me out. And I'm like fuck man.
[00:25:49] So I kept trying to get a little bit further as far as I could. And I had reached my limit. So, but and the thing is I guess I never explained to my parents that I wanted the full game because I never got to play Wind Waker
[00:26:04] all the way through until like the early 2010s. When I got my copy in fact the copy I have I still have the receipt when I bought it and it was 30 bucks. Complete complete clean as a whistle. It's beautiful. It has my beaten save file on it.
[00:26:24] I played the shit out of that game and I if they put it on switch I will play it again. I've kind of been wanting to replay Wind Waker but I'll wait. I hope that if they do they do the Wii U version
[00:26:35] because that version is so fucking good. Yeah, I need to play that version. But anyways I got that and then I got I was really in the wrestling at the time. So I got the the WWE games that were on GameCube, WrestleMania 19, Day of Reckoning 1, Day of Reckoning 2,
[00:26:52] Day of Reckoning 1 still one of my favorite wrestling games. Fan fantastic game. And I even had the the Legends of Wrestling games which if you know anything about wrestling games those two do not hold up very well. They're some of the last games a claim ever made
[00:27:09] but yeah, but I enjoyed them for what they were at the time you know and I used to in the GameCube days I remember there was by my house a place called Family Video one of those kind of local mom-and-pop rental places. Right. Went there every week
[00:27:27] and I rented so many games so many games and I remember funnily enough at around that time this little game called Resident Evil 4 came out and I remember seeing that cover the GameCube one that's like purple and everything
[00:27:46] right and as a kid it scared the shit out of me you know and my sister was trying to goat me into trying it because she knew I was kind of a scaredy cat right she would play into that bitch anyway I'm kidding
[00:28:00] and she so she's trying to get me to rent it I never did I don't even remember what I rented instead but like I remember renting like Smash Brothers Mario other games like like Shrek 2 Cowardly Game Crew yeah that's a fun beat them up
[00:28:17] that is a good game I ended up owning it and like 100%ing it like twice I've rented that game once when I had the GameCube and I went to my grandma's house and all of my cousins were there and somehow I had four GameCube controllers
[00:28:36] and the four of us got to like probably half way through the game and it was fucking awesome it was an amazing time yeah that game is a lot of fun like I probably still remember where most of the magic beans are you know
[00:28:50] because like the GameCube became like everything during that time for me you know it was just like that was what I was playing you know like when you and Dave were doing the video on Return of the King right it unlocked a lot of memories for me
[00:29:06] because I had that game I did everything in that game I played the shit out of that game and I still have very very fun memories of it in fact when I was able to get Dolphin running properly the first time the game I played
[00:29:20] was Return of the King it was just to play that game and beat it all over again and uninstalled Dolphin and we're never able to set it back up correctly again no Dolphin well I have Dolphin on my Series X now so I can play it in 4K
[00:29:35] and it's beautiful and I have but yeah I remember having that I had the two towers game which was also good out of the two is my favorite two towers I didn't like it as much maybe that's because it didn't go for that like realism in the graphics
[00:29:53] it was a little bit more cartoony and it also like the first half of it was essentially the fellowship yeah but it's still a good game still a very good game I mean it was the first half is the good part of fellowship yeah yeah
[00:30:09] like I remember fighting wasn't it one of the bosses the watcher in the water yes it is it is I think it's like Stage 3 where you're walking towards Moria and that's the boss at the end of the stage yeah I remember doing that
[00:30:31] quite a few times as well but I remember the fight scene in Balan's tomb like that level was fantastic that's so much fun and on the gameplay advance that stage is so much fun as well because you just have like non-stop orcs and shit just coming towards you
[00:30:49] and the gameplay advance games are Diablo clones yeah so it's just non-stop fighting and then you have to escape and you're getting swarmed it's so much fun that game is so good I should play that soon yeah I need to sit down and play those properly as well
[00:31:09] and I also had the third age that like Final Fantasy Lore of the Rings clone which I like for what it is super slow if it was faster I would love that game but it's way too slow for me it was one of those formulative games for me
[00:31:29] and appreciating RPGs because the first RPG I ever played was Fantasy Star 2 and I played that on it was this target used to have a really cool big box PC game selection and I remember seeing it was the Sega Smash Pack Volume 1 and 2 for PC
[00:31:53] and it was a bunch of Genesis games compiled for PC right and I was like oh that's really cool because you know Genesis and there was a bunch of games on there I didn't own like Fantasy Star 2 and Vectorman and some others Vectorman Vectorman still kind of slaps
[00:32:11] it is it's fun it's a decision to go with Vectors but it is still a fun game and then the second one is your fighting bugs I never played the second one I only played the first one my cousins had a Sega Nomad for some reason
[00:32:33] and there was one night that my mom visited my aunt and I was hanging out with them and they were watching one of the Friday the 13th movies and I was just playing Vectorman on the fucking Nomad and I was like how much the movie is like no
[00:32:49] video games dude like what the fuck why would you watch a movie when you can play a game Jason couldn't be Vectorman right Freddy doesn't have a fucking chance against Vectorman cause he doesn't sleep no he doesn't but so I popped it in the old gateway
[00:33:09] computer we had I remember when we bought that thing yeah cause that thing is why I didn't get into PC gaming because I tried to play PC games on that and it just didn't work like the Sega Smash Pack worked no problem but everything else just didn't
[00:33:27] which I'll get into in a second but with that Smash Pack they had Fancy Star 2 and it was intrigued because of the title screen and I'm sure have you seen the title screen with like the two red ladies in space you know or whatever it looks like really
[00:33:45] intrinsic you know I'm like ooh what is that you know and then you push start and then there's just a conversation happening with Marth in like a like a Vegeta space suit that's what it looks like and he's talking to like Marth in a Vegeta space
[00:34:03] that is a description it's Marth in a Vegeta space suit with a cape and a sword yes that's exactly what it looks like and he's talking to like some I think it's a pink haired girl or whatever and I'm just like
[00:34:17] get through that I just want to play the game who cares about story I see the red ladies with the planets and Fancy Star behind them that looks cool that does look cool cause it's like what does that mean right and I remember
[00:34:31] like walking around the town and I'm like I don't know what I'm supposed to do so I left so I get out of town and then I try to like I try to like I get into fights
[00:34:47] and then I'm like what the fuck why can't I hit them what is this like menu and like attack it completely threw me off and I still haven't played Fancy Star 2 to this day you know I should sit down
[00:35:01] and play those games cause I would get through them just fine now but so I was like eh whatever on that fuck it but then it was either it was on the different one it had they had a different game on there with also an intriguing
[00:35:15] title screen called Shining Force and Shining Force clicked right away I don't I it's it's weird cause like I mean it was more just like pure fantasy right and then it was like the same kind of stuff but for some reason I enjoyed it
[00:35:35] more I think just cause a turn base RPG Shining Force is a tactical RPG yeah it's like Fire Emblem basically but you start out in the town but there's like the story is just like you'll have like the portraits of the people talking to each other
[00:35:51] but you can like move around it made more sense to me cause everything felt better labeled or whatever like the game said like oh go talk to this guy go talk to that guy you know maybe fantasy star 2 does that but I just didn't care so
[00:36:09] we're Shining Force 1 and then you leave to go to the ancient seal cause you're in Gardiana so you're guarding the ancient seal and Runefaust is trying to open it to awaken Dark Dragon so you go there and then when you start fighting tactical RPGs clicked immediately
[00:36:25] I think it was because it's like oh my character is here they're over there I'm trying to get to them but I can only like move this amount to get to them like it made much more sense than just standing in a line taking turns right so
[00:36:41] I ended up playing a lot of Shining Force and just really falling in love with it and I think it's just because the graphics are really good um and it has like really cool character designs that I still love to this day um
[00:36:55] I don't know it just flowed really well you know and then so I played that a bunch and then there was a lot of other games on those Smash packs I used to have them still but I played those a lot and then the other PC
[00:37:09] games I tried playing was um I got this 4 game collection it was I don't know if I can remember them all it was Command and Conquer Renegade I don't know the fucking first that's why your computer didn't want to run yeah because it was playing
[00:37:29] the the lone first person shooter in Command and Conquer history right and it gave me a bad idea of what Command and Conquer was I thought they're all shooters apparently not you know what did I know I also had I think it was Need for Speed Hot Pursuit
[00:37:51] Hot Pursuit 2 it was one of the Need for Speeds where it's like you're being chased by the police right yeah yeah and that one was fine right and then we had and then there was another game I think it was called Freedom Fighters
[00:38:07] or Freedom Force no it's Freedom Force and it's like a weird I don't even know how to describe it because every time I tried to play it my PC would crash every time no matter what I did and then there was another it was like an MMO
[00:38:25] like a space MMO I never even bothered playing that if I get fantasy star online or some shit like that no it was all EA games like remembering it's like oh those were all EA properties you know and it was like this huge box
[00:38:39] with them all in it and I think the only reason I got it was because it was a big box and my parents were like oh it's decent value for four games so right but I also I don't know but I also was able to play
[00:38:53] more proper PC games like the original Sims roller coaster tycoon a space ball like the space pinball cadet game you know that old windows game played a lot of the the Hoyle like card games you know like they're like the old like Hoyle computer programs
[00:39:13] that would you could play like Go Fish or like Euker or Old Mate or whatever and they had a lot of and they had a lot of weird like random characters as well like you could like computer players it was like oh there's like an alien there's like
[00:39:29] like a bigfoot kind of character it was like a fisherman all these like weird people right if anybody remembers this I'll be shocked but I played a lot of that as well and then shortly after my Gamecube is when I got my GBASP
[00:39:45] that was that was a good day such a fucking great console yeah I remember when I got it it was my birthday it must have been 2004 because it was the original SP model and I remember we were having like a birthday party
[00:40:01] for me like it was like outside it was nice summer day right and I remember I got with it Link to the Past with the four swords in it I remember playing that one quite a bit but I didn't beat it till properly till a couple years ago
[00:40:17] and it was the same copy I had as a kid you ever get to play the four swords game no because I didn't know anybody who owned it or if they did own it they didn't have a link cable or if they did had both
[00:40:31] they just didn't want to play with me that that game was so much fun the four swords adventure middle school when I had it there was one other kid that had the game and he had a link cable and we played that shit a ton during
[00:40:51] lunchtime it was awesome it was so fun and it's only like it's like very short because it only has like four stages and they're very small so we would just run the same stages over and over and over and over again and it was just
[00:41:07] great it's so much fun I'd really like to try to play it one day properly so who knows but yeah we had that I got the Incredible Hulk GBA game that was based on that 04 movie that's terrible the one with is it Eric Bona or something like that
[00:41:29] I think so yeah because I also played the the gamecube version of that which was a little better not a lot just a little and then the other game I got from a Game Boy was you'll appreciate this one Kingdom Hearts Jane and Melons oh yes
[00:41:47] I specifically asked for that one because my history with Kingdom Hearts was I was on the bus it must have been like first or second grade like when did Kingdom Hearts 1 come out was that a 1 or a 2 I want to say 02 yeah around that time
[00:42:07] it was around that time and my mom used to run like a little babysitting service so certain kids they would come over to my house and we would hang out or whatever right that was a whole thing in fact one of those kids
[00:42:25] I still remember him to this day he also had a GameCube and he would bring over like Mario carts and all these other games and we would just play them for hours and hours good time I missed that guy but another one but there was
[00:42:39] a girl and she had a PS2 at her house and she was talking about this game called Kingdom Hearts where it's like she's like oh you swing like a giant key and fight things or whatever and it sounded interesting right and
[00:42:53] there was a Kingdom Hearts game for GameCube and they were like no idiot I was like well shit but then I learned they were making one for the Game Boy Advance and you're like who's the idiot now bitch and I was like
[00:43:05] you're a 9 how do you know that word yeah so I was like oh I'll have that right and I remember getting it and it didn't make sense I fucking hate that game so oh my god you're awful bro have you played it recently
[00:43:25] yes last year I started it and I didn't continue it because something else came along I need to get back to it because it's fucking bullshit is why that game is fucking great I don't know what the fuck you're talking about I'll do it again eventually
[00:43:37] I've also played ReChain of Memories never again no don't stay away from that awful but one of these days I'll go through all the Kingdom Hearts games I'll do it just to say I've done it I was in fuck 9th grade when that game came out yeah and
[00:43:57] for some reason I was hanging out with one of my way older cousins he's significantly older than me and I had money for some reason and we went to this mall it was around Christmas time we went to this mall that's like
[00:44:13] an hour and a half away from the town where we live and I went into the game store and I saw Kingdom Hearts for the GBA and I bought it for $40 pre Puerto Rico having tax so it was straight just $40 for the game and we got I
[00:44:33] he lent me a cell phone I called my mom and said hey I know we're meeting here bring my Game Boy I want to play this game that I bought and we got to the place where we're going because it was like a family party
[00:44:43] I popped the game on the Game Boy turned it on hurt the opening music that piano song at the beginning yeah I like that theme and I was fucking mesmerized but I didn't get to play anymore because I was super tired so I fell asleep I
[00:45:05] don't remember many keep going I then put a shit ton of time into it that's one of those games where I if I listen to a specific song I remember it and the song is Get Back by Ludacris because I got that album for Christmas that same year
[00:45:25] so I would listen to the album on repeat with the while playing the game I remember this little fuck in middle school went into my backpack and stole the game and I had no idea who it was until I saw him a few days later playing the game
[00:45:45] and he was playing my file and he was still stuck on the same part that I was when he stole it so he never even played it no he was playing it he just couldn't figure it out he was so fucking stupid he couldn't figure it out
[00:45:59] so me and another buddy of mine went up to him and we were like that's my fucking game he's like no it's not I just bought it and what part are you in? he's like that's impossible you can't get to that part in a day that's his game
[00:46:15] and we just ripped it out of his game boy and I took it back so what should actually have been his game and I just stole somebody else's game after mine got stolen do you still have that copy? no I do have a copy
[00:46:29] but it's not that copy because the copy I have isn't the same one either because also with the GBA before I got a GBA the SP another one of the people little kids that my mom sat for she had like the original model
[00:46:47] and we used to play like Super Mario Advance 1 like Tom & Jerry and The Infernal Escape and some other fucking random game I can't remember so we used to play that those games a bunch and I remember I had the Game Boy Pocket in fact I remember my
[00:47:05] mom got me and my two siblings she got all three of us Game Boy Pockets that were different colors I had the yellow one my sister had the green one and my brother had the red one and we got like Super Mario Land Kirby's Dream Land 2 Turrock 2
[00:47:21] The Seeds of Evil Tetris Plus like that's the version of Tetris I grew up with not the original Game Boy 1 but the plus one where it has like a little story with these two little adventurers and there's like a puzzle mode
[00:47:35] where you're trying to get the guy on the floor and everything that was for what for GBA the original Game Boy that was for the original Game Boy yeah it also came out on like PlayStation and Saturn but it had a GBA variants and I know the
[00:47:49] not the GBA but like Game Boy so I knew that one we also had the Tom & Gachi Game Boy game I never understood that game I never got why they decided to make one for the GBA yeah that was weird try to think what else did we have
[00:48:09] we had some we had a couple oh that's when I got Pokemon Red like I vividly remember one Christmas I got Pokemon Red in box I think because it was like the hot shit at the time so they're like oh of course he likes Pokemon right and
[00:48:28] I don't know what I did with that cart I genuinely have no idea like I I think somebody fleeced it off of me genuinely yeah I know I got blue for three Kings Day yeah I got go ahead yeah I got red with Charizard on it
[00:48:56] there's something I gotta show you it's the sports commentator named Stephen A. Smith where somebody gives him the three the three starters in Gen 1 and they're like which one you taking he's like what the hell are these and he's like Bulbasaur Shemander in the Squirtle
[00:49:14] so I call him Shemander now because that's too good but I played a lot of Pokemon Red and I could never get past when you're on the cruise ship and then you do all the stuff on the cruise ship yeah and then it sails away
[00:49:34] I didn't know what to do then you had to go fight Lieutenant Surge the third gym I didn't fucking know fucking idiot I was like 5 suck my 3D balls though if I were to play that game properly now I would just play FireRed yeah no definitely
[00:49:58] I got blue for 3 Kings Day right and a couple of couple of years later or the following year for Christmas for some reason my family decided to get me every single Pokemon game that was out so I got a copy of Red and Pokemon Yellow
[00:50:14] and the one that I actually wanted was Pokemon Yellow so I had a brand new Pokemon Red out of the box just sitting somewhere in my room that I never played because I had blue and I didn't want red I just wanted yellow
[00:50:30] and I could never beat yellow so that first gym is impossible if you still want that I don't have those cartridges fuck no I would say if you had that sealed copy of Red you could probably pay off your house with that no it wasn't sealed
[00:50:44] like I opened it and took the game card out cause I never understood why people would throw out the boxes because when I had my little GBA collection I kept the boxes but then I eventually got rid of those games or sold them
[00:51:02] or whatever I don't fucking remember so for the Nintendo 64 my parents did keep the boxes cause I remember looking in the entertainment center where the 64 was and there were like a bunch of Nintendo 64 boxes in there the Game Boy boxes either if I tried to keep them
[00:51:22] either my sister destroyed them or I just ripped them to shreds trying to get at the gooey inside I understand that's fucking savage I was fucking moron so was I I should have kept all that stuff cause I didn't play the N64 until I was in middle school
[00:51:44] cause around like 2007 is when I discovered what YouTube was and there was this guy on YouTube and later he moved to a different site for a while and he was doing game reviews and I just became addicted to his content it was the angry video game nerd
[00:52:02] like during his early days like the first video of his I ever watched was the Sega 32x and what I loved about his content besides it being funny that this guy is saying like fucking shit so much was that there's a way about it
[00:52:20] that he says that's so entertaining to hear look at it he says shit it's so fucking funny but it's like I've watched those episodes so many times that like I don't laugh at them anymore just cause I know them too well but I smile
[00:52:36] and enjoy them the one I still that still gets me is when he's trying to land the plane in Top Gun it's just like ass and then he just goes back to us like that shit's still really good but what I liked about his stuff was
[00:52:52] I was also learning about the history of video games like that's when I learned about the Nintendo 64 that's when I learned about Super Nintendo like I didn't even know about Super Nintendo at that point and I never- you just thought it went NES GameCube
[00:53:08] my brain just never thought about it I guess so it's a fucking massive leap dude those valleys you crawled through while growing up were incredible well cause when you're a kid you don't or at least for me I just wasn't- I didn't think about it
[00:53:24] it was just I had it you know but then- like fucking Sonic and Mortal Kombat 3 yep Boogerman I've always had a eclectic taste oh man but yeah that's when I learned about N64 and Super Nintendo and the Sega Saturn and the Dreamcast all that stuff and just became
[00:53:48] kind of engrossed in the history and then I bought an N64 from- there used to be this retro store around me that still kind of exists but it's not the same anymore it was a weird place it was called Vaxen Videos where they sold old retro video games
[00:54:04] but they also like sold vacuum cleaner stuff vacuum cleaner stuff Vaxen video games yeah oh man that for some reason I thought that you were gonna say they sold vaccines and video games I wish what how do you present that business model to the bank
[00:54:26] I don't know man I have no idea cause yeah cause they would have like vacuum cleaner bags and they would like repair vacuum cleaners and next door they had a like a lawn care like a business where they would like fix your lawn mower and shit like that
[00:54:42] but I remember I would go in there and like they had all the N64 games and those like glass display cases you know the type right and they had like GameCube games in the back and NES it was the like the first time I was just surrounded
[00:54:58] by all this stuff yeah and I bought an N64 I can't remember what I paid for that thing maybe like 50 bucks and I got a bunch of games for it I got Mario 64 I got the WWF games I got a game called Blooms Brothers 2000 not a bad one
[00:55:16] now fucking garbage it could be worse it could but it's still pretty fucking bad well worse was I tried buying Superman 64 knowing what it was but my N64 wouldn't play it your N64 liked you yes because I remember I took the game back to them
[00:55:36] and I'm like oh this game isn't working and they're like huh they popped it in their N64 it worked just fine and I took it back to mine still didn't work so I never got to play it but um the one game I also had like Mario Kart
[00:55:50] but the one game I regret like getting rid of was I had a copy of Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine manual everything I think I paid 20 bucks for it that game is worth like 300 dollars now yeah and I think I saw continue play it once and
[00:56:12] it looked so fucking bad like why is it it's a sub it's a subpar it's a subpar ocarina of time where you're Indiana Jones right that's all it is I don't want that that's fair just wait for the new one the new one looks good I don't know
[00:56:34] I'm not an Indiana Jones person I am I've always been a fan um but yeah like I wish I could go back to it like how it was because that place was a fucking treasure trove especially for Gamecube stuff like they had Skies of Arcadia Legends for 60 dollars
[00:56:54] and I never bought it I never bought it because well that was in my days where I was like oh anime is stupid like who likes this stupid shit look at you now you fucking weeb it's a sickness it's a sickness that gets everybody um
[00:57:14] yeah like there was so much stuff I missed out on right but it was so cool to be in there and see all those old games and buying like old Genesis games like I bought Shinobi 3 I bought Castlevania Bloodlines I bought Sonic & Knuckles all bangers
[00:57:32] I never bought Shining Force 1 or 2 for the Genesis because they never had them you know because with Shining Force 1 like you know I was a big fan of that game and then there was this old YouTube reviewer I don't know if he still does stuff now
[00:57:48] but he was called K-Wing and he did a video on Shining Force 1 like a really nice video review of it for like 2008 standards and then he mentioned oh Shining Force got a sequel and I went wait Shining Force has there's a there's a sequel
[00:58:06] there's a sequel to Shining Force 1 um and I remember I didn't play it until I think I got it on the Wii yeah because because I remember like when the Wii came out that was a big deal everybody wanted a Wii right and I didn't get
[00:58:22] a Wii until like 2009 when nobody gave a shit anymore and it felt like a consolation prize because because I skipped over when I got my Xbox 360 which was like 2006 I think like late 06 um and that like pushed everything to the side you know because then I started playing
[00:58:44] Gears of War I started playing I tried Halo and I didn't care for it but um I really got hooked on the Rambo 6 Vegas games one and two like like those changed me forever that was like my online shooter phase
[00:59:02] and it like I feel like it I feel like it changed my like brain chemistry I swear to God because I used to be before the before those games I was like straight A honor roll student no problem right like I was good
[00:59:16] and then I started playing those games stopped giving a shit about my academics and they got really bad to where my parents did the whole like over hiding the consoles until you get better at school and I was like okay and then I got back to
[00:59:30] like a A B kind of ish like a B average basically and they're like okay you can have them back and my grades and then you tanked them again yeah that became a problem for a long time that was the thing
[00:59:46] that kind of happened to me but in my case was like we're taking the consoles away and they took them and eventually I found where they were and I just took them back set them up and started playing and they had
[00:59:56] just kind of like forgotten so my great stayed bad no because I think my parents took them to like my uncle's house so that was smart of them to do um but yeah man just thinking about it that like yeah, video games have always
[01:00:16] kind of just been there since I was like just a young kid you know watching my siblings play Mario right they're always there they're always plentiful and yeah I would just either rent stuff or occasionally actually get stuff and playing consoles PCs hand held kind of the nine
[01:00:38] and then eventually when I was able to get my own money you know my parents would take me to the retro stores you know and I would browse and buy stuff and at one point I was into Gamecube collecting in like the 2010s when nobody cared about it
[01:00:56] the perfect time to collect for Gamecube yeah and like I used to post like pictures on Facebook of like my collection um those pictures are long gone and I remember I remember at one point I think my like my Gamecube like count was like close to 400 seriously
[01:01:18] I had a lot well because I used to go to GameStop and just like that's when they were trying to get rid of them right and I would just snag them up you know like oh like oh you got these sports games that are dirt cheap
[01:01:34] give me give me and I had like crazy taxi I had a shit ton of stuff I don't remember what I officially had but I had a lot of stuff and then I sold a good chunk of it
[01:01:48] when like a moron and I don't know why I did that but I kept some of them and I eventually bought some other stuff and so the Gamecube games I have now are what I have and it's probably just going to stay that way
[01:02:00] because I don't really have a desire to buy them anymore just because they're so expensive and I can just emulate them on my series X with like no issue except the Rogue Squadron games those I have I have 2 and 3 so I'm going to play them officially
[01:02:20] and they still hold out those who were bangers do Rebel Strike fucking love that game I have them both but I can't play them because I don't have a CRT and my TV looks way too dark whenever I put the Gamecube on it that's weird
[01:02:38] and like I adjust the settings and everything and it's still way too fucking dark well I know if you have a Wii Gamecube games play really well on the Wii they actually look better no just have a Wii U okay
[01:02:54] well I think if you hack your Wii U you can play Gamecube games on it like on a disc I've heard that before but I've never had a Wii U and I will never buy a Wii U because there's just really no point
[01:03:09] no the only thing you would buy a Wii U would be for Wind Waker Twilight Princess and Scenoblade Chronicles X that's it Yoshi's Woolly World ehh Devil's Third if it wasn't $500 just to play it just to play it Nintendo Land Nintendo Land's fun
[01:03:35] the NES remixed games are fun but there's also one of the one why the fuck aren't those on Switch though right that's a good question yeah but weirdly enough the Wii U when that came out I was dating somebody at the time and she got a Wii U
[01:03:51] with Nintendo Land and Zombie U went over to her place and we played that like a lot and it was great the little time dude Nintendo Land's good I will defend that game the issue was they wanted it to be the Wii U's Wii Sports
[01:04:13] and it wasn't going to be that but as a little mini-game collection the kind of get a tasting for the Wii U is pretty solid Luigi's Mansion game was fun the Metroid game was fun of the Animal Crossing one with the Wii U you have the hat
[01:04:33] you put the marbles in and shoot them out Mario Chase was a good time you know there's good stuff in there and then we played Zombie U I wanted to like that game but it's two bear bones you know they did the definitive version on PS3 and 360
[01:04:57] and it still wasn't anything yeah cause there's no story like the only redeeming mechanic that it had was whenever you die the next character that you're playing ask and find your old body and kill your old body and take the loot yeah it's like a Dark Souls
[01:05:15] but weirder but I originally bought a Wii U back when it came out and I bought the sell the version the Wind Waker version and it hurt when I had to sell it so I could pay my fucking rent that shit hurt like a motherfucker yeah
[01:05:37] I can only imagine cause there's only three Nintendo consoles I've never owned a Wii U a Game Boy Color and a Virtual Boy you can probably buy a whole Virtual Boy collection for like $700 Virtual Boy in every single game I've seen a Virtual Boy in person
[01:06:01] like that same that same retro store I told you about they had one day I walked in cause I used to go in there like weekly um like a Virtual Boy was just sitting there and I remember I put my face up to it
[01:06:15] I asked if I could play it but they wouldn't let me but you know it's like I had one I was in it man you know and it was weird I asked them how much they wanted for it and I think they said like 300 bucks
[01:06:29] and I'm like yeah I'm not paying for that no no no there's there's a really good Virtual Boy emulator you know and it has like a lot of like color options so if you want to not be red and black
[01:06:43] if you want to be like blue and black which is a little nicer on the eyes you know just to play Virtual Boy Wario Land which is actually not a bad game yeah or that's like the only good thing it had or Jack Bros which I love this
[01:06:59] Jack Bros I forgot that that's a thing that is the first game in the Magami Tensin series to release in North America what the fuck it is canon in the series and yeah it was the first game in the Shimagami Tensei like the whole universe to release
[01:07:19] in the US out of fucking wild fucking Jack Bros on the Virtual Console and it's fine I guess like most Virtual Boy games are fine but like they're just not really that worthy of anything they're just slightly upgraded Game Boy games right that's what it looks
[01:07:41] like to me because that Wario game looks just like Wario Land on Game Boy yeah the only thing that's unique about it is you can jump into the background and do background stuff and jump back out which is neat but Shantae not really worthy yes well Shantae
[01:07:57] does most things better man I I really hearing you talk about the Game Cube makes me want to try to find a CRT really bad because I have a ton of Game Cube games and even though I can play them on the Steam Deck I would rather
[01:08:13] play them on the Game Cube and that would give me the excuse to finally pull the trigger on Twin Snakes because I fucking left that game so much I don't know if you could see it but I do have Twin Snakes down there it doesn't have
[01:08:29] the manual though that's the one thing it doesn't have I want it with the manual the problem is that Twin Snakes for some reason the coding that they used to use is starting to fail on every single copy so the second disc is starting to rot now
[01:08:45] oh really a lot of people are saying that their second disc is rotting I need to check that second disc then you'll see it the label on it we'll start to track and shit do you want me to go grab it? yes go grab it real quick
[01:09:05] no dead air run move I probably didn't hear that I'd rather be Aesop Rock no a good white wrapper here it is look at that beaut I paid 60 bucks I paid 60 bucks for it I put a health and precautions booklet in it I remember
[01:09:30] I bought like a whole stack of these guys because some of these had nothing and I'm like I at least want something in there let's see disc 2 alright here it is that shit isn't mint dude it looks fine to me so it's the label on top
[01:09:48] the white part like all that entire white and black label starts peeling off and then the game is unplayable okay it's not peeling well I take good care of my games some let's be fair some people online who can play about disc rot
[01:10:02] they don't take good care of their games let's be real but it's like an excessive amount of people that are having that problem and it's kind of fucking crazy that it's doing that I was trying to see like in the well I'm looking in the light
[01:10:16] I was like is that no that's just like the disc imprint because disc 1 also has the same like weird like crease that you can kind of see on the front yeah but there's no cracking or anything so it should be fine at least just vacuum seal it
[01:10:32] and keep it safe until the end of time never take that shit out I was well I like to take good care of my games alright so that's how I've always been you know oh and I didn't touch on like when I got my ps2
[01:10:48] because that was a big deal and I remember we got the ps2 and all my siblings got games for it including me my brother got GTA San Andreas of course my sister got the double pack of GTA 3 and Vice City it's so funny
[01:11:08] thinking about it because they're not really gamers anymore at all but yet my parents still tried to rope them into it you know when I was kind of the one who was hooked on it but I got X-Men Legends 1 nice you got the better game honestly that
[01:11:26] game is still very good I like X-Men Legends 2 more just because I like mixing up like Brotherhood and X-Men together but yeah that game was a lot of fun still is a lot of fun and then that transition into Marvel Ultimate Alliance which I remember
[01:11:46] I got I rented that game on 360 I remember I played and beat it and then the and then my copy crashed at the ending like it was going through like oh here are the choices you made or whatever right and then like right before the credits it crashed
[01:12:04] so I don't know if I ever got the achievement that I beat the game but I promise I beat the game god damn it that game the Ultimate Alliance game is the first time that I ever saw Deadpool yeah the first time I ever saw him too and
[01:12:22] well I said I think when they announced the Deadpool movie my aunt was like who's that guy I was like oh it's Deadpool and she's like how do you know that I don't know like that's when I saw a lot of
[01:12:34] like the Marvel characters for the first time you know like like that's where I saw Moon Knight that's where I became a Moon Knight fan because I thought Moon Knight was in that game yeah and I love Moon Knight in fact in my closet I have like
[01:12:48] like a stack this big of Moon Knight comics um I liked him because he was just like this all white like I just liked how he looked and I was like oh let me get him in my team
[01:13:00] and so and he was just a permanent member of my team and then I started like learning about him and I'm like oh he's like Marvel's Batman but even more fucking crazy like that's awesome right it's a asreal but white in a way yeah
[01:13:14] um yeah cool stuff man so yeah yeah yeah Xen I like I rented 360 stuff a bunch and oh god my 360 red ring to that that was a painful day I never did luckily but it it did freeze real hard because I spent 13 hours straight playing Fallout 3
[01:13:38] yeah and I had to wrap it in a towel and put it in front of my AC unit for three days straight before I could actually play it again because it overheated so bad that it wouldn't do anything I'm pretty sure
[01:13:52] that happened with mine because I used to like play Rambo 6 Vegas like all through the night you know like I would get home from school I would do my homework I swear sure and then and then you know browse like the old blades
[01:14:08] I remember the blades I remember when they introduced the avatars and that's what I got after the avatars and we're all like why are they doing we shit like this is weird like why are you doing this baby shit right but anyways
[01:14:22] we all made avatars because I had a little group of friends on 360 that we played Vegas all the time but we would play it like till late in the night you know nothing would get hot and loud like I remember the old one used to be so loud
[01:14:36] like I would put it on pause go to like the bathroom and I could hear it from the bathroom it was like I'm fucking playing take it off it was crazy I don't know how that thing stayed alive in general but but it was
[01:14:54] so sad when I lost it because I had like I developed a decent collection like I had Assassin's Creed 2 I had Bioshock I had oblivion I had GTA 4 I had like smack numbers were all 2007 and I had a bunch of I had like the Gears of Wars
[01:15:10] I think I had one too like I just got a bunch of 360 games you know and games that I had like dabbled in like I never like my 360 didn't red ring I probably would have played all of oblivion I probably would have played all of Bioshock
[01:15:24] because but I never was able to get around to him you know so when my 360 died officially you know that's when I kind of just went back to old faithful and you know then I got my Wii and I dabbled in Wii stuff you know I mean
[01:15:40] I think I play Wii more now than I ever did you know that the Wii was a weird one for me because I got the Wii after after I graduated college it must have been like a couple of years before the Wii U came out yeah and
[01:16:00] I played Donkey Kong Country Returns No More Heroes 1 & 2 and Cairden's having a fucking aneurysm can you hear her screaming in the living room I heard faint sound of that because at first I was going to make a joke about oh I've never played that Wii hidden gem
[01:16:22] but you know because with the Wii I can hear over you screaming is she okay? yeah she's like complaining about something I don't blame her but with the Wii I had both galaxies be both galaxies I had Disney's Epic Mickey and I've like tried playing it
[01:16:52] and I was like I don't know about this game but I just bought it again for like five bucks and I'm like I should probably try it you know see if it because I know people don't like it I would just want to know right kind of games
[01:17:06] I beat Metroid Other M on it a while back that was an experience I still need to play that I've never played that it's a trip man do you have a Wii? a Wii U I can play it on the Wii U when you do let me know
[01:17:26] because I have opinions on that game probably be part of the Metroid playthrough that I've been doing since last year because I stopped at Super because I played Super a couple years ago and kind of hated it I say kind of be careful who you say that to
[01:17:46] the game is great but the map is fucking atrocious maps okay no the map is bad the map is really bad what I don't like about that game is having to cycle through all of Samus's weapons and they give you the visor which is kind of pointless
[01:18:08] and the way she controls in that game it's just I've never been a fan of it it's stiff and it kind of feels like you're controlling a puppet the entire time yeah I think it's because I'm so used to playing Fusion and even Zero Mission
[01:18:26] which both those games control very differently but it feels so much better that going back to Super just doesn't feel as good like Fusion and Wario Land 4 were games I used to play and I'm sure you remember the old demo kiosks that they used to have
[01:18:42] in that era because I remember we used to have a Kmart around here and they had the closed off cage of all the GBA games and then they had the little one it was usually in there was either Fusion or Wario Land 4 see that the one I remember
[01:19:06] was Rogue Squadron at Walmart with the GameCube controller and you had to look straight up so you could see the fucking TV that's the one I remember oh yeah, like I remember we used to go in the old Walmart and my mom would go grocery shopping
[01:19:20] and I would just tell her I'm going to the video games and yeah you'd like tell your neck super up to do this and play Beatpedie Piranha Sunshine or whatever those old GameCube demo discs oh yeah, those were the good old days man I fucking missed those days
[01:19:44] those days are never coming back yeah I know honestly I think it's okay but I think it's okay because I'm not playing games now is so much better than it used to be just because it's so much easier to get these games you know what I mean
[01:20:02] I could just go online and get these games download them and just fucking play them but it's not the same as like buying the thing holding it the old tactile sort of memories that we associate chunking a cartridge into a console
[01:20:22] turning it on and being like oh shit it doesn't work and you turn it off and do the into it you know but you do it anyways because it's a good luck charm even to this day it still fucking works you know so it's just that old
[01:20:38] it's not the same as just a couple of mass clicks and it's like oh I'm playing now right I love modern gaming because it's super accessible instant gratification but there's just something about going to the store in the old days and looking at all the
[01:21:00] games and like the different variety of everything it wasn't just white bald man with a gun you know there was variety and you know you have the tonic troubles of the world and fucking you know a glover since shit but oh yeah yeah it was
[01:21:22] you had to take a risk every time right and like you'd go to say like Walmart and you look at all the games behind the glass case and be like oh what's that one ooh what's that and then you look at the prices and that's the thing
[01:21:36] prices for games have only I think gotten worse especially for older stuff like I try going into retro stores now and you know I'll look at the prices certain things like say like 360 games are still priced kind of decently but if you look at the GameCube section
[01:21:54] I don't think there's a game cheaper than 30 bucks and it just sucks man it's just someone like hundreds of thousands of fucking NBA lives or NCAA football or something like that and NFL 2K3 on GameCube good game yeah and then like you'd go to the rental store
[01:22:18] and just look at all them and see the one game you want to play and that's like oh the copy is not there of course it's not it never is yeah just you know it was a different time it was more like wide-eyed sort of exploration
[01:22:36] like what is this going to the video rental store and just spending like maybe an hour just trying to figure out what game I wanted to rent for the weekend and most of the time I either ended up renting uh Shadows of the Empire because that second level
[01:22:58] was incredible when I was a kid the Hoth one? with the Hoth stick? No the first level is Hoth inside the Hoth base and at the end you fight one of those chicken walkers I forget the name now the ATST yeah Blascor Blascor
[01:23:20] first time I rented that game I was like holy shit this is awesome there's a giant fucking robot destroying buildings I played that game for the first time at a friend's house who had an N64 and it was the same friend who eventually gifted me his Super Nintendo
[01:23:36] and um he had GoldenEye and that was like the first time I ever played GoldenEye and I'm still not a big fan of GoldenEye but we're not going to get into that here but I've done the peak thing where it's like you have four people playing split screen
[01:23:50] and all that great time that's a great time it's just when I eventually got my own copy and started playing the single player version of it I'm like I don't like this as much right just doesn't feel good like my neighbor and I whenever we would play GoldenEye
[01:24:06] we would just we were fucking fascinated by the glass physics in the game because in multiplayer there were some stages that had like glass that you could shoot and break and it would like shatter and we would just shatter the glass
[01:24:22] and wait for it to come back up and like we would see like the glass just like materialize in front of us and it was like holy fuck it's the future we would just keep doing that for hours and hours
[01:24:34] and then I would shoot him and he would get pissed and turn off the 64 because he didn't want to die fair enough because when we were playing GoldenEye it was like all of us were like equal in our skill level so there was never like a guarantee win
[01:24:50] which made it more fun especially when we would do like one hit kill slappers only so it would always be running around chopping each other you know it would do that thing where it's like it would get real quiet you just hear the and then when
[01:25:06] somebody got hit everyone went oh shit oh fuck you got him you bitch those are fun days man those are fun days man nostalgia if only I could bottle it and sell it I would be a billionaire every corporation is trying to do that these days
[01:25:26] and they're all fucking failing miserably and it's great I think it's because they don't get nostalgia oh no they don't you know what I mean like nostalgia is a very personalized sort of sensation you know we all feel it but we all feel it for different reasons
[01:25:44] you know like you feel it for GoldenEye in a different way than I do even though we have nostalgia over the same game you know like I'm sure we both have having nostalgia over Sonic because we both grew up playing him so
[01:26:00] I mean it's the first game I ever played I'd never beaten Sonic 2 but that first stage in Sonic 2 you've never beaten Sonic 2 no I haven't actually tried to do it so that's why okay to me the game is a breeze when she gets to Metropolis Zone
[01:26:20] then Metropolis Zone is oh god it's so like the level design is so good up until then and then Metropolis Zone they're like eh let's just make a bad one and then there's three of them why is there three of them no fucking sense and it's so bad
[01:26:38] and then when you get to Sky Chase it's like well Sky Chase isn't a great zone but it's a nice break you know and I always like the Sky Chase music and then Wing Fortress I remember as a kid I would pass Wing Fortress
[01:26:52] because they'd have those little things that would fling you around and then they'd like fling you off the thing and I'm like god damn it you know because I didn't know how to get lives, like live max whatever so yeah I gotta get a CRT because
[01:27:08] I have a Sega, I have a 64 I have a Gamecube and I got games that I need to play I like playing them on the Steam Deck I love playing it on the Steam Deck I love about holding the original controller putting in the cartridge
[01:27:24] and having all of those old limitations while you're playing that's just perfect if it wasn't so expensive I'd probably indulge a little bit but it's just getting so expensive these days I just don't bother yeah fucking COVID ruined gaming it was getting bad before that though
[01:27:44] yeah it was impossible and when did I start collecting GBA the first time I think it was like in the 2010s, like early 2010s, it was impossible to find a copy of Aria of Sorrow I couldn't fucking find it anywhere and now you know there's re-pros
[01:28:06] and people are selling their copies for crazy amounts of money and we have it on Switch and whatever but there were games that were fucking impossible to find did you get Aria of Sorrow eventually? yeah I have like three copies of it now just to be safe
[01:28:24] two of them are re-pros and I think one of them is original so I'm good and hearing you talk about like when to do DS collecting, I'm like more power to you because DS collecting is getting really bad it's getting really expensive but then again
[01:28:40] the other day I found Golden Sun for the DS for 20 bucks on eBay but that game is bad I hear it's not good I hear it's not good well I don't think the original Golden Sun is good anyway so the original Golden Sun is great
[01:28:58] there's something about the game that rubs me the wrong way I gotta give it another try to see if it's different Aaron loves it oh yeah he does fucking crack head over it for real but when I modded my 3DS I literally went through the entire
[01:29:18] DS ROM set and grabbed every single DS game I even had a remote interest in so I was like I'll never have to do this again so I got just about everything I want on the 3DS so when you're like oh like contact
[01:29:34] or whatever I go to my 3DS I'm like there it is right there I am gonna look for when I go on this trip I'm gonna look for a alien infestation yep I have that one too I don't care how much it costs I am buying it because
[01:29:54] I had that game on the DS I bought it for $15 and I traded it in like a fucking asshole so it's alright we don't think about these things we really don't man that game was great you should try to get a Spyro Shadow Legacy the Spyro RPG
[01:30:22] the fuck hahahaha it so a friend of mine recommended Spyro Shadow Legacy well he recommended it in a sense that like he played and it was bad basically take the GBA Spyro games take that make it across like two screens for a DS and then give Spyro
[01:30:48] experience points for some reason and that's what it is this looks this looks I can't tell if it looks bad or good it's not great but I played of it it's better than that Sonic RPG on DS I can tell you that much
[01:31:10] it looks awful and it looks good at the same time like I can't fucking make up my mind about this game that is a good way to describe it it's a little of both Jesus Christ look at that boss fight looks awful hahahaha wait that's the truth
[01:31:28] do you have China Town War I know you're not a GTA guy but China Town Wars is really cool I have thought about getting it but I haven't it's fun that's what I've heard you got Corona Trigger on DS right of course I do
[01:31:46] that's the version I played when we did the episode me too I bought the Japanese version because it was cheaper I actually bought the version for $50 and it came with the soundtrack so I have the soundtrack with the game that's awesome I'm looking at the best DS games
[01:32:04] let's see Advance Wars Dual Strike that's a good one me too Medios is interesting I don't have that it's a puzzle game I think probably not going to care about it then is that the one soccer I made is it maybe I know he made
[01:32:26] a puzzle game for the DS Medios this is like Tetris Attack let's see what was it that he made I do like Tetris Attack that could be a fun get yeah it was Medios yeah he made that let's see World Ends with You I don't have that one
[01:32:50] but I do have the terrible Switch version yeah it's made for the DS do you have Dragon Quest 9? I do I need to play that one I need to play that one let's see Elite Beat Agents don't hate that fucking game so much oh shit
[01:33:10] you don't like it? no that game is terrible it has awful music it has awful music the music sounds terrible and the gameplay is awful break your fucking DS the game fucking tapping at it with the fucking stylus like a maniac fuck that game
[01:33:32] speaking of a game you'd probably hate any of the Professor Layton's do you have any of those? no I don't hate Professor Layton I know I would have an awful time with it because it's only fucking puzzles and I don't like puzzles
[01:33:46] and it's so funny you walk around town and you ask people can you help me with this and they're like oh sure but can you do this puzzle for me? like why are you all dealing with puzzles? what the hell is going on in this world
[01:33:58] if the puzzle is not like a set of shapes and me putting the correct blocks on each shape I don't care about it I don't want to struggle with a fucking puzzle I just want to continue the story you don't want to do math
[01:34:12] no I don't want to brain just kill let's see oh Space Invaders Extreme that's a cool game I've seen that one I don't have it that one's pretty cool is Ghost Trick any good Phantom Detective? oh wait that's a logic puzzle game so you probably never played it
[01:34:34] no that's not for me I did buy second code recollection another code or whatever another code recollection yeah a couple of weeks ago and I was listening to Nintendo Cartridge Society and they were talking about it
[01:34:50] and I was like fuck that's a game that I'm never going to play because it's a puzzle game so I'll just keep it in my collection waiting for it to go in price like fucking crazy because it's getting impossible to find everywhere
[01:35:00] it looks like a game I would like but I didn't buy it they were saying that it's like a baby's first rest at an evil I thought I love it then but it's mostly puzzles I was like no I don't know that's not for me
[01:35:18] it's fine with me let's see oh yeah have you ever played retro gaming challenge I've always wanted that game and I could never find it at a decent price yeah I hope you do because I've played a bit of it it's pretty cool man some day
[01:35:40] yeah some day I'm going to play Burger Champ's favorite DS game oh yeah it taps into his nostalgia that he claims he doesn't have he's got a little bit just a little bit don't worry he'll say some on discord and this comes out whatever
[01:36:00] it's complaining that he doesn't have any oh again I don't know if it's a game you would like but it's a game I really like hotel dusk that's another one that's not for me I know my body's played it
[01:36:12] and I looked at it and I was like no not for me that game is good I fucking love that game yeah the DS has a lot of really good games on it I want to collect for both DS and 3DS there's this dude on youtube
[01:36:32] I don't know his name he posts a video every Tuesday and Thursday and he just goes like hidden gems like on every console games that are stuck on consoles that are great too and that's where I found a bunch of the DS and 3DS games
[01:36:50] that I bought recently so I think like I'm getting close to the point where I don't want to where I'm not going to have to collect anything anymore because every game that I want I already have so like I'm missing the dragon quest games 5 and 6 and I'm missing
[01:37:08] retro game challenge just like a handful of games that are just expensive RPGs that I just want to have in my collection oh Yohkai Watch 3 Aaron has a fucking copy of that game that he got for 40 bucks and that game is like $350 now yeah that game is crazy
[01:37:26] I'm actually looking at my DS collection back here let's see oh yeah I got Dona Sorrow I need to play that game I don't have the other two though but I need to play the Castlevania DS games Dona Sorrow if they would have taken the touch functionality away
[01:37:46] like because you have to do like a sigil every time you kill a boss they would have taken that shit out or made it optional the game would have been so much better oh have you ever played Contra 4? I think I haven't let me check
[01:38:02] I haven't played it that game is really going up in price I'm sure it is I always forget I have Metroid Prime Hunters I always forget I got that one recently yeah I need to the Prime games I've been sleeping on them I've only played Prime 1
[01:38:24] I haven't played any other Prime games I need to get all those we were talking about Chain of Memories I decided to look it up on eBay and it goes from anywhere from like $5 to $20 yeah Chain of Memories is worthless there's a complete complete in box version
[01:38:48] wrapped in everything for $65 yeah that sounds about right that game didn't retain value man oh no I think it's so like fucking crazy and then people realize that it's not what they wanted out of Kingdom Hearts games so they all just created them in yeah cause I think
[01:39:08] a lot of the Kingdom Hearts crowd were like Nintendo people who were kind of envious of the PlayStation people not having it so when they got one they got very excited as did I and then you try playing it and you're like
[01:39:22] oh yeah I didn't want this weird card thing right Contra 4 CIB going for 99 cents oh what? yeah it's a bid it's already got a bid in it oh yeah Contra 4 DS yeah it used to be really pricey I guess it's come down a bit no it's come down
[01:39:48] well the cartridge by itself goes from anywhere from $20 to $40 CIB goes from anywhere from $40 to $60 okay yeah I don't remember what I paid for mine but mine's complete with the manual and everything so it's a fun game it's made by Way Forward actually I think I had
[01:40:13] a loose cartridge of it and I ordered a replacement case and the replacement case was awful so when I did my big purge of DS games that I knew that I was never gonna play or didn't care for I think it went with it no game
[01:40:34] no game for $30 fuck you yeah I favorited the ones that I wanted yeah you should try to get the blue dragon games that are on there there's blue dragon games on the DS there's like three of them yeah why I don't know but oh shit 52, 56
[01:41:02] which one's this one oh yeah blue dragon plus and then blue dragon awakened shadow whereas I think plus is it's like a real time strategy game I think or something and then awakened shadow is just like a straight up action RPG so
[01:41:24] they tried to make the series a thing but you know no but I need to sit down and play the 360 one so I did lost Odyssey so I gotta do blue dragon next but I'll probably you know it was maybe after when I finished like a dragon
[01:41:44] I'll do blue dragon keep with the dragons oops all dragons the year of the dragon the year of the dragon exactly oh yeah I need to play the spiral games too well I played the trilogy I've beaten the trilogy that backlog is ever ever growing
[01:42:04] it'll never go away but it's fine I've just come to terms with it like how I view it is I'll just if I'm in the mood to play a game I'll just play the game doesn't matter what it is it's like I'll just play it
[01:42:16] you know and I don't worry too much about like oh I should play this game or that game or whatever I'm trying not to worry about that it's just if I'm in if the mood strikes me I'll just play that game whatever it is you know
[01:42:31] fly that's how I would be that's what I want to do but uh I promise you guys that I'm playing that I'm going to play star ocean and like a dragon has made that impossible but I am going to be a few days without the
[01:42:43] PlayStation so I'm definitely going to put a lot of time into it because it's a really fucking good game it's really it looks great it's great it is man it is like you can tell that it was done by the people that used to do the tales games
[01:43:01] yeah and it's so fucking good it's like a great beat them up RPG I want to keep going because the story is interesting too when the characters are fun it's it's a great game hopefully I finish it and get to do the thing it's going to be 100 hours
[01:43:21] to beat the whole game but I'll get it done oh yeah we got to do fable at some point too oh yeah let's see because Kay I didn't just finished a book and she's reading and started reading another one and it's not the golden compass book
[01:43:35] that's okay I haven't I haven't started reading it yet either but that's just because I've been sick yeah alright so let's go ahead and call it and yeah let's call it why don't you tell me about what you've been working on recently
[01:43:55] your plugs, your podcasts all that stuff now so that we can we can get it all the listeners sent over there well as you've already mentioned I am the co-host of the 3DO experience you know we're me and Bill from Gaming Collecting talk about the 3DO
[01:44:11] we just did our episode on balls and yeah but we got some fun stuff in the plans for that I also do the King Crimson podcast frame by frame we've been trying to get another episode out but you know we've been having some scheduling conflicts so
[01:44:29] hopefully soon we'll get another episode out and we can maybe start doing that on a more regular basis but yeah other than that you can find me in the discords you know at Thrac and you know I'm still on the social media as at Thrac94 but I don't
[01:44:45] I just haven't been using them that much recently you know just twitter kinda sucks but you know but I try to stay there for the occasional engagement but but yeah this was fun taking a trip down memory lane you know oh just so many games man yeah
[01:45:05] it was interesting because we're slightly well not slightly we're somewhat we have like different ages I'm definitely in the older side and you're you know you're still in your 20s right I'm 29 right so you're still in your 20s and I'm just barely hanging in there
[01:45:27] it got to a point where we had like parallel consoles like the Gamecube we were playing the Gamecube at the same time the 360 more or less at the same time the Gameboy Advance and all that stuff so that's why I like
[01:45:41] that's why I like the series because you know it lets you see what other people's experience was and how similar you know what the shit that they played growing up was so yeah and our perspectives are different because you have that like kinda older
[01:45:59] perspective where as I was just like oh I'm just a kid this is cool when you were slightly more older so you're like bullshit right except for Metal Gear, Twin Snakes that game was fucking incredible I've never played Twin Snakes you haven't nope I haven't played it
[01:46:19] I bought it because I was like cause when I saw it I was like I need to grab this because I know I need it so I was smart I was smart to get it alright you were I'll give you that but you need to play it
[01:46:33] when I played Metal Gear Solid 1 I played it on the PlayStation and a real quick funny story with that is you get to the point where you have to like call Meryl right and they're like look on the back of the case or whatever and I'm like
[01:46:49] back of the case and I'm looking through like the inventory in the game and I'm like there's nothing there's no case like what the hell I go to Google and I ask Google like how do I get to Meryl and they're like
[01:47:01] back of the game case and I'm like what and then I grab it and I look and I was like are you f- oh there it is right there wait hold up do you have it no I don't but I want to check something keep talking
[01:47:17] okay yeah so that's when I was like oh I need to call Meryl that way and I didn't it worked so the game got me they did it so the PlayStation 5 version right the collection look at that right there it's right there that's awesome
[01:47:39] it's on the back of the case that is great that is awesome yeah 140 dot 1 5 yep I still remember that yeah oh shit alright one of these days I'll do a Metal Gear Marathon excited to pull out I want to do it so bad
[01:47:55] I want to do it so bad I need to I want to go from the original all the way to the last one except as do I play 5 ever again I've only played 1 in 3 arguably they're all the good ones no yeah they're all the good ones oh boy
[01:48:18] alright so let's call it thank you for being on I'll plug your shows and stuff on the show notes so that people go and follow and listen and all that stuff and do you want to say goodbye to everyone bye bye everyone goodbye everyone
