[00:00:02] Engine? Check. Fuel off? Check. Tires? Check. Helmet? Helmet? Check.

[00:00:11] Okay, aerodynamic he's not, but he sure can make some tracks. Mickey Speedway USA.

[00:00:16] Filthy?

[00:00:17] Welcome back to the show everyone. If you have been waiting for the next new episode of Remember 64, we're back. Or at least I'm back.

[00:01:02] Jiggy Lookback has been here for quite some time, working away on YouTube. If you're listening to this, this episode will be releasing in early 2025.

[00:01:10] We're recording this as 2024 winds down. It has been six months since Jiggy Lookback and myself have sat down. Actually more than six months at this point.

[00:01:20] This week we're going to be speeding through the US and your podcast feed. We are back everybody. Jiggy Lookback. Hello! How are ya?

[00:01:28] I'm great. As in, it's in my name, so I'm always back, you know? It's just kind of the way it is.

[00:01:34] You were always here.

[00:01:35] I was always back.

[00:01:35] You're always here.

[00:01:36] You're always back.

[00:01:38] I'm here. It's good to have you. It's good to hear your voice. Good to see your smiling face.

[00:01:41] I know. I know. Like, it's, um, if anyone doesn't know the reason why there was such a long hiatus was my wife and I had a kid in June.

[00:01:50] Uh, we welcomed our first child to the world and, um, it's been fantastic. It's been great. It's been very busy.

[00:01:57] Obviously I needed to take some time to sort of make all that happen and, uh, and, and get the family, uh, get the family going, so to speak.

[00:02:04] And then work gets in the way, life gets in the way, and it's just a matter of sort of trying to find the days, the times to not just record, but play these games as well.

[00:02:13] You know, that's something too. We're not just trying to half-ass our way through this stuff. We want to play these games. We want to analyze them. We want to talk to you and talk to each other about them.

[00:02:21] So, um, I'm happy to be back and, uh, 2025 is going to be kicking off sort of a new, I don't know if you want to call it era or something like that, but we are going to be going through a bunch of games, the good, the bad, the ugly, and everything in between, as I've said before.

[00:02:35] Um, and we're starting off with, uh, with a banger, but, uh, but in the meantime, Jiggy, um, how's sort of the second half of 2024?

[00:02:43] 2024 been for you as we, uh, sort of wind down another, I was going to say another year of us doing this, but, uh, it was kind of only just half a year, but how's things? How's it been going?

[00:02:52] Oh, it's been absolutely busy. Things are kind of stacking up exponentially. I just passed 10,000 subscribers on my own YouTube, so that was a milestone for this.

[00:03:03] But yeah, I've been really, uh, missing our chats on remember 64 and I am not alone. I have had multiple people reach out and ask more like, you know, people listen to the podcast. They know you were going to be on hiatus. Like you said this.

[00:03:18] Yeah. And yet they're still like, is it done? Is it gone? Are you good? I'm like, it's fine. He's coming back. I was like, give him some time.

[00:03:28] I will, I will say I, I definitely thought I was going to be back sooner. Like my, my thought was, okay, it's going to be a few months at least realistically, you know? Um, and then if anyone who has had a little kid, uh, some at certain points in the first three to five months, the baby will hit a sleep regression, which is essentially, they just do not cooperate with sleep. And it just, you have to, it, it, it varies of how they respond to that.

[00:03:54] And when that happens for us, it was very much, Oh, we need to like, really, he's not sleeping for long stretches at all. So having any time in the evening was very difficult. And then I started going back to work in person a lot more. And it was just like, well, all my days just disappeared. I'm not playing games. I'm not having a chance to sit down and talk. I want to make sure that I'm, I'm back, that we're back, that we're going to do this show the way we always have, which has been awesome. And why I'm thankful that people are happy that, uh, they want it to come back and we're looking forward to it. And so are we.

[00:04:23] So this is where we are. This is how, this is what's going on. Jiggy, you've been kicking ass on, on YouTube. So congrats on, on the big number. And, uh, and we'll keep, uh, one of the reasons why the game we're going to talk about today is because you have, at least I have this recording, have recently just gone through it. And it was one that we've been talking about for a while. Um, we are talking about, I want to get like the, the full name, the full name. Cause I always called this like Mickey's USA or something like that.

[00:04:53] Yeah. That's what I always called it. So Mickey's Speedway USA from 2000 on the N64, a late addition to the console, which I didn't realize until I started playing this again. Um, and, uh, a rare title, a rare LTD, if you want to say title.

[00:05:10] So that's right. Yeah. So, you know, we're going to go through a bunch of rare games. We have already, we've done golden eye. Uh, and I will say, I'm going to tease Banjo-Kazooie is coming up.

[00:05:20] Everyone. If we, if anyone's going to be talking about Banjo-Kazooie, you know, someone with Jiggy in their name is going to be a part of that.

[00:05:26] So, um, it's been a long time coming for that. That's definitely one that we want to spend lots of time with and sort of get it right, so to speak. So 2025 is the year for Banjo-Kazooie. So watch out for that. But, um, okay. So let's start with this. What Jiggy, what was and has been your experience with this game? Um, do you have a little bit of a history with it? Let's, let's start from there.

[00:05:50] Yeah. So my history with this game, I would say it actually starts with the prequel that is the Game Boy Color game.

[00:06:00] Okay. Is it the one of the same title? Is that like the- There is one of the same title. That's not a prequel. That's just the same game, just on Game Boy Color, which I have played that too. But the one before it was Mickey's Racing Adventure.

[00:06:13] That's the one I have. That's the one I grew up with too. I have that.

[00:06:17] That game is actually really fun. I love this, this weird thing they did on, on Game Boy. They're just like, oh, well, we need to make a racer. Let's make it an RPG. Oh, we need to make, we need to make Mario Golf. Let's make it an RPG. Like they did that so often with Game Boy Color games, but it was awesome.

[00:06:37] Mario Tennis are essentially RPGs with sports attached to them. And I would say that, I mean, I've probably, I think I've said it on this show before, and especially in the Mario Golf episode, that Mario Golf Game Boy Color game is one of my favorite games of all time. I think it is perfect.

[00:06:52] Perfect. Yes. Perfect. So Mickey's Racing Adventure RPG. It's great. It's got a little hub world. You're walking around. You've got, you can visit all your little friends in their houses and stuff.

[00:07:03] You upgrade your vehicles. Like, it's really cool. You can check your mail. Yeah, you can check your mail. Pluto's around there somewhere. You can dig holes and stuff.

[00:07:11] It's so random. I, so I, I, um, after playing a decent amount of the game we're talking about here for N64, I still have the cartridge. I'm not sure if you do. And I put it in my, my GBA works.

[00:07:23] My Game Boy Color doesn't anymore. So I played in my GBA, which is just behind me, if anyone can see the video version. Um, and, uh, yeah, there it is. Yeah. Oh, also see-through cart. Like that's, that's cool. That's great.

[00:07:35] Got all those Game Boy Color carts.

[00:07:36] Love it. Love it. Um, and, uh, and then I was reminded, I, I don't know what it has been so long since I played it. And I don't know if you have any experience with old, like NES racers at all, but the first thing with the perspective, cause it's sort of like a top down.

[00:07:51] Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's like pro-am.

[00:07:54] Pro-am and, and micro-machines. I used to play the shit out of micro-machines at a friend's place on the NES cause he had it and it was super fun.

[00:08:01] And then on the NES, that was like crazy cool, you know, idea for a racer, which I still think is very cool that I think they should, I mean, the Hot Wheels games, the recent Hot Wheels games are kind of similar to that, but that's what it reminded me of just with, you know, the Disney and Mickey flavor on it.

[00:08:17] Oh yeah. I mean, rare basically took the pro-am formula and just skinned it with Mickey and then made it sort of into this. It's a hodgepodge of a few different things on Game Boy at least, which is pretty cool.

[00:08:32] I, I, yeah, I really enjoyed that one. I played that one quite a bit grown up.

[00:08:36] There we go.

[00:08:38] I, I really enjoyed that one quite a bit. And then, and then they, you know, they had to follow it up and fun fact about that game, which I learned when I was making my video, but I just think it's amazing.

[00:08:48] David Weiss did the soundtrack for Mickey's racing adventure on Game Boy.

[00:08:52] Oh, I didn't know that.

[00:08:53] Yeah. Super cool.

[00:08:55] That's great.

[00:08:56] He did not do the soundtrack of Mickey Speedway USA, uh, which I'd have to look up. I'm totally doing it right now.

[00:09:04] You did it?

[00:09:04] Yeah.

[00:09:06] Yeah.

[00:09:06] Um, yeah. So I have the same experience. I played that one. I, I think, I think personally, I think I may have dabbled a little bit in Speedway USA on the 64. I just a little bit. Cause I, I booted it up.

[00:09:20] I, you know, turned on my 64 for the first six months and, uh, and played it. And I was like, Oh yeah, this, this, uh, you know, theme song or like the setting, like in the bedroom, sort of like,

[00:09:34] thing in the menu and stuff. This kind of feels familiar. I played one of the tracks. I was like, okay, this kind of feels familiar. And, um, and I think I played this a little bit.

[00:09:44] It may have been a rental or at a friend's place, but I didn't have a ton of experience with it. So I'm kind of coming in, I would say mostly new to this.

[00:09:52] Okay. Yeah. I did. I did play this one growing up. I had it. Um, I do not know when I acquired it, but I had it and I remember having it and I had to reacquire it for my collection, but it's one. I played.

[00:10:05] And to a certain point, I believe I got all the like gold trophies in the base races. And then I could not, I could not get farther than the fourth Grand Prix that opens up after you do that.

[00:10:20] Cause it's pretty hard. And you know, I was a little kid, like it gets, it starts off relatively easy, ramps up pretty quick.

[00:10:28] And then it just gets to a point where you have to know what you're doing or you're going to fail.

[00:10:33] Yeah. And it's really cool. Ben Cullum, by the way, did the soundtrack for this game and it is phenomenal. I'm sure we will talk about it as we go, but it is great.

[00:10:42] Yeah. It's catchy. Yeah. We'll, we'll play some audio in a little bit, uh, purposely instead of me playing it by accident. Like I just did a minute ago. So, um, guys, it's been a while. It's been a while. What can I say? Um, yeah, no, this is, this is actually a really great game to kind of like come back as like the first sort of return episode, I think, because cart races are classic.

[00:11:02] You know, on Nintendo consoles, especially, um, you know, we both love Diddy Kong racing. That is our, it's my favorite cart racer. I really don't think that anything can, can beat it. I haven't played a lot of really recent ones, but as far as the era of the nineties to mid two thousands, that it's, it's the one. Um, yep. I, I have played a lot of cart racers and Diddy Kong racing is still the best.

[00:11:29] Just don't, don't even bother with Garfield cart unless you want a really buggy, funny time with friends.

[00:11:36] I, I, I think I, I actually, I'll put a little small caveat on, on it being the best is that I think it's like no competition that it's the best single player, which I know we've discussed.

[00:11:48] Oh yeah. A hundred percent.

[00:11:49] One of your videos. No question that it is multiplayer. The argument could be that maybe like double dash, which I know is, is later, but double dash is a fantastic game.

[00:11:57] Like Mario cart double dash, I think is, is amazing. Has a lot of ideas that I think they should go back to, but anyways, just, there's an argument there.

[00:12:04] I think the reason why I say that, yeah, the reason why I say that this is a good one is because her races, you don't have to take too seriously.

[00:12:10] You know, you can jump in, play some races, jump back. We can take a couple of weeks to kind of, you know, get our feet wet back.

[00:12:15] At least for me, get my feet wet and playing 64 again and stuff.

[00:12:18] I did play some while I was, uh, um, with my son and stuff in the, in the last six months, I played all the way through Banjo Kazooie on my steam deck.

[00:12:27] I was able to play in the last six months is sort of on the go. Uh, I played it from start to finish and got like 95% of the collectibles in it and stuff.

[00:12:36] Like I went ham on it. It was great. Um, which if you listen to the previous episode on your, your feed, I have a little story about that, of, of what that was like.

[00:12:45] So, um, go back one mini episode from this and you can listen to that if you haven't already. Um, yeah, this is a, uh, it's a fun game, but I was surprised at how much that difficulty ramps up.

[00:13:00] That was one of the things that I jotted down in my, in my head have been like, I was very surprised at how difficult this gets so quickly.

[00:13:09] Mm-hmm.

[00:13:09] On the beginner difficulty on what would essentially be, I would assume they want to be a kid's game.

[00:13:15] I think it's, it's pretty easy. You're kind of in first, maybe second, if you make a mistake or something, but you're, you're in the lead the whole time.

[00:13:22] The rubber banding is not too bad. I don't think that it's there, but it's not crazy.

[00:13:26] Um, you can get, you can safely get yourself to a, to first place through each of the sets of races.

[00:13:33] I think Grand Prix's or whatever the name is for him in this.

[00:13:36] But then when you jump up to the middle difficulty, I think you already need to know what the hell you're doing.

[00:13:42] Cause it is not easy.

[00:13:45] Oh, absolutely.

[00:13:46] And that's what I started with. Cause I was like, eh, what's a, you know, what would be equivalent of like a 50 CC, a Mario cart?

[00:13:51] I'm like, eh, those are always just, I've, I've played a kart racer. I got this.

[00:13:55] Holy shit. I got my ass kicked right away.

[00:13:58] Yeah. Listen, it's like, it was one of the things when I put my video out that people kept talking about.

[00:14:03] It's like the, the beginner level, the AI is stupid and like running into walls.

[00:14:09] Like they're very simple.

[00:14:11] Like we're talking like if I had to scale the AI skill level, it would be like a one on the beginner level.

[00:14:16] And then you go to intermediate and it bumps up to like seven.

[00:14:20] Yes.

[00:14:21] That's a huge jump.

[00:14:23] And then, but then you get to professional and then it's 10.

[00:14:27] Like you have to like basically be perfect.

[00:14:30] It's, it's like 12, man.

[00:14:32] Like it's, it's well, I would save 12 for the, the last grand prix because.

[00:14:37] Oh yeah.

[00:14:38] That, that, oh, oh, oh.

[00:14:41] Uh, the last, the fourth one or the, cause there's five, isn't there?

[00:14:44] Uh, the frantic finale.

[00:14:46] Yeah.

[00:14:46] That's the fifth one.

[00:14:48] I think.

[00:14:49] One, two, three, four.

[00:14:50] Yeah.

[00:14:50] Oh yeah.

[00:14:50] Yeah.

[00:14:50] Fifth one.

[00:14:51] Yeah.

[00:14:51] So I got, I got to the fourth one.

[00:14:52] I did not get to the fifth one.

[00:14:53] Yeah.

[00:14:54] So the fifth one, when you get to those courses, uh, there, there are a lot of like quick turns

[00:15:00] like, uh, it's not Hawaii.

[00:15:02] I'm trying to think of which one it is.

[00:15:04] Maybe it's, maybe it's Oregon.

[00:15:05] I saw a video of it.

[00:15:06] It's, it's, I think it's, it's a, it's a California location.

[00:15:10] I can't remember.

[00:15:10] Something.

[00:15:11] You have to, you have to like drive in the, uh, you're like driving through a cave and

[00:15:14] stuff.

[00:15:14] And then all of a sudden you hop into a bridge and you're just quick turns left, right,

[00:15:18] left, right.

[00:15:18] I mean, that is like impossible.

[00:15:20] It is so difficult.

[00:15:22] And this, this game.

[00:15:25] So fun fact, it was built.

[00:15:28] I'm all about fun facts.

[00:15:29] It was built off the Diddy Kong racing engine, obviously.

[00:15:32] Yes, I saw that.

[00:15:32] But it was built off the modified Diddy Kong racing engine that was used for Jet Force

[00:15:37] Gemini.

[00:15:39] So there's this, this weird trail of like Diddy Kong racing, Jet Force Gemini, Mickey

[00:15:44] Speedway USA.

[00:15:46] Um, and I guess you, if you dig into the files of Mickey Speedway, you can probably find some

[00:15:51] Jet Force Gemini elements in there, which is kind of cool.

[00:15:54] Yeah.

[00:15:54] Um, but yeah, it's, it definitely has a lot of similarities to Diddy Kong racing as far

[00:16:01] as like gameplay mechanics go.

[00:16:04] Uh, but yeah.

[00:16:05] Yeah, there's ideas there that are similar.

[00:16:07] There's not, I, one of the other things I noticed, also I'm trying to find the map.

[00:16:11] Oh, is it Malibu?

[00:16:12] Is it that one?

[00:16:13] That sounds right.

[00:16:14] Yeah.

[00:16:15] You're sort of like on the beach.

[00:16:17] Uh, it looks like there might be a cave or two or something.

[00:16:20] Yeah.

[00:16:20] I know there's Hawaii and it's not Hawaii.

[00:16:22] It's like the one right after that.

[00:16:23] It was Yellowstone, Washington, Everglades and Malibu.

[00:16:28] Oh no, that's not it.

[00:16:29] No, that's actually the first one.

[00:16:30] I played Malibu.

[00:16:31] Nevermind.

[00:16:32] Yeah.

[00:16:32] Oh, Hawaii.

[00:16:33] I think you're, I think it's Hawaii.

[00:16:34] It's on the beach.

[00:16:34] It's right after Hawaii.

[00:16:36] It's the one after Hawaii.

[00:16:37] Oregon.

[00:16:38] It is Oregon.

[00:16:39] Okay.

[00:16:39] I thought it was Oregon.

[00:16:41] I wasn't sure though.

[00:16:42] Yeah.

[00:16:43] Oregon.

[00:16:43] So you're like, you can, you're on like sort of like a.

[00:16:45] Yeah.

[00:16:45] Oregon sucks.

[00:16:47] A walkway over the water.

[00:16:47] Sorry if you're listening to this in Oregon.

[00:16:49] Yeah.

[00:16:51] I think I, I really hope I'm pronouncing it right because I said, I said Oregon and someone

[00:16:58] like corrected me and they're like, it's Oregon.

[00:17:01] And I was like, I'm from the Midwest.

[00:17:03] I'm Canadian.

[00:17:03] I probably say things a little bit differently.

[00:17:04] So I don't know.

[00:17:06] I was like, well, we're, you know, we're not that far apart where I'm from.

[00:17:10] It's fine.

[00:17:11] It's fine.

[00:17:12] It's fine.

[00:17:14] Yeah.

[00:17:15] Sorry.

[00:17:15] Um, the, uh, the maps though, like the, the races themselves now that we're, I sort

[00:17:21] of, it just cued into me when I looked at the thing there, uh, and, and the similarities

[00:17:26] to Diddy Kong racing and stuff is that, um, I think these ones, you know, the racers might

[00:17:33] feel kind of the same.

[00:17:34] I don't know.

[00:17:35] I should start, let's start with that.

[00:17:36] Let's start with the characters.

[00:17:37] Let's start there because I think, um, the roster is pretty small to start with.

[00:17:42] And I thought it was a little bit disappointing with that, but I guess there's some unlockables

[00:17:46] you can get.

[00:17:47] Yeah.

[00:17:47] And Louie and stuff.

[00:17:48] And it's just, there's not a lot of variety in the type of like statistics, I guess you

[00:17:55] want to call it like the, the abilities that, that each racer has like, yeah.

[00:17:59] I don't know.

[00:18:00] Did you notice a huge difference?

[00:18:01] Did you flip between racers?

[00:18:02] Uh, it's, it doesn't feel as strong as it does with Diddy Kong racing, but it feels

[00:18:07] similar to the differences in like Mario Kart 64, I think.

[00:18:11] Whereas you have, you have Pete and Goofy, which are heavy.

[00:18:15] And then you have like Daisy and Minnie, which do the acceleration quickly and handling.

[00:18:21] And then Mickey and Donald are just kind of all arounders, the Mario and Luigi's, if

[00:18:25] you will.

[00:18:25] Um, but I, I did notice that at least starting out and doing all the normal Grand Prix's,

[00:18:33] I felt like Pete and Goofy had the advantage just because.

[00:18:37] I used, I used Goofy cause I just liked the character.

[00:18:39] I was like, oh, I'm just going to use Goofy.

[00:18:41] And I, I felt like it was cause they got the top speed, right?

[00:18:45] That's their thing.

[00:18:46] It's their heavy, but they have top speed, which is the, you know, the Bowser, the Donkey

[00:18:50] Kong, uh, is it Donkey Kong Jr. that they call him in the first Mario Kart?

[00:18:55] Is that what they name him?

[00:18:56] I can't remember exactly.

[00:18:58] Um, both those guys.

[00:18:59] Yeah, I think, I think heavy characters with a high top speed have an advantage, especially

[00:19:05] in the first three Grand Prix's because a lot of these stages are very open.

[00:19:10] Yes.

[00:19:11] They're like, I'm, I'm looking at the footage you're playing right now and like, this is

[00:19:14] Chicago.

[00:19:15] We're going underwater under the sewers, which is, it's a really cool vibe.

[00:19:18] It's a really cool level.

[00:19:19] This is actually one of my favorite levels.

[00:19:21] I agree.

[00:19:22] I like this a lot.

[00:19:23] Yeah.

[00:19:23] And there's, it's really cool because there's secret paths, but we can talk about that a

[00:19:27] little bit later.

[00:19:27] Mm-hmm.

[00:19:28] But it just, it doesn't have a lot of hazards.

[00:19:32] It's very wide and open.

[00:19:34] And when you're hitting boosts and stuff, as long as you can hit those boosts and like

[00:19:39] navigate your turns, you know where to turn, having a higher top speed gives you a huge

[00:19:43] edge over other characters.

[00:19:45] Yeah.

[00:19:46] Yeah.

[00:19:46] I agree.

[00:19:46] Like you said, especially when it's more open.

[00:19:49] I mean, the, the further along you go with the races, the more sort of turns there are

[00:19:53] and whatever, like it does get more complicated, but I don't know that I felt like I was at

[00:19:58] a huge disadvantage.

[00:19:59] I think I ended up going with, with, uh, Daisy a little bit eventually just cause I was

[00:20:04] like, ah, I'm just going to pick someone else.

[00:20:05] And usually in Diddy Kong racing, I pick the ones like I, I, I think, um, who's got the

[00:20:11] acceleration in that?

[00:20:12] I think it's.

[00:20:13] Yeah.

[00:20:14] Pipsy and.

[00:20:15] Maybe Tip Top.

[00:20:16] Yeah.

[00:20:17] Tip Top.

[00:20:18] Cause he's usually my go-to.

[00:20:19] So I was like, okay, that's what I'm used to.

[00:20:21] So I went with that and it, it felt fine.

[00:20:23] I feel like I did okay either way.

[00:20:25] When I got to those higher difficulties, I think it was more my skill than it was my,

[00:20:29] or lack of thereof than it was the actual racer.

[00:20:32] That was the problem.

[00:20:33] So.

[00:20:33] Yeah.

[00:20:33] Well, that's the thing.

[00:20:34] You can get to a point in these races, especially if you get, as you get to the higher difficulties,

[00:20:40] like professional, you can get to the point where you're just flying through the

[00:20:43] track, which is actually amazing.

[00:20:45] Uh, I made a comparison in my video about how I like this game as a kart racer in the

[00:20:53] same way.

[00:20:53] I like Smash Bros.

[00:20:54] Melee as a fighter because there's, there is a skill ceiling.

[00:20:59] There's a certain point where you have to just understand the mechanics and like frame

[00:21:02] perfect things.

[00:21:04] When you hit things perfectly, when you're hitting all these boosts, you're navigating

[00:21:08] all these turns as fast as possible.

[00:21:10] You are flying fast.

[00:21:12] Like.

[00:21:13] And you got all the coins to make you faster.

[00:21:15] It just gets really, really fast, which makes me feel like this game would have such a huge

[00:21:21] competitive draw.

[00:21:23] Oh, interesting.

[00:21:25] But it's very unfortunate that it is so overlooked.

[00:21:29] And I get.

[00:21:31] Yeah.

[00:21:32] I mean, no.

[00:21:33] People that knew about this, if you don't believe me, go look at the comments in my last

[00:21:38] video.

[00:21:38] Um, but people don't realize that this was made by Rare.

[00:21:43] That's the first thing.

[00:21:44] No, I, I, before we started talking about it sometime last year, I had no idea.

[00:21:49] Yeah.

[00:21:49] I knew of the game and I, and you know, because the Game Boy one really for the most part.

[00:21:53] Yeah.

[00:21:54] I had no idea.

[00:21:55] I never paid attention to that as a, as a kid.

[00:21:57] So like, it never was never on my radar until I got older.

[00:22:00] So yeah.

[00:22:01] Yeah.

[00:22:01] People just, they don't know what's made by Rare.

[00:22:03] I guess Rare for whatever reason, didn't promote this game.

[00:22:07] Really?

[00:22:08] Like not even on their website.

[00:22:10] I'm not sure what that's about.

[00:22:12] Some licensing thing.

[00:22:14] I would say, I would say this is similar to, I mean, it's different because it says Mario,

[00:22:18] but like Mario paint is all, or Mario paint.

[00:22:22] Paper Mario is also a game from 2000.

[00:22:25] I'm pretty sure.

[00:22:26] Right.

[00:22:26] So we played that about a year ago.

[00:22:27] That's check out that episode.

[00:22:30] Incredible game.

[00:22:31] Just amazing game.

[00:22:33] Aside from the toy box.

[00:22:34] That's otherwise it's amazing game, which I think we were all on the same page for about.

[00:22:38] Yeah.

[00:22:39] But I think in 2000, like the 64 was, it was not, it was going out.

[00:22:46] It was on its way out.

[00:22:47] Right.

[00:22:47] So if you don't have Mario's face on the front or someone in Mario's party, Mario party,

[00:22:58] you know, it's unfortunate because it's not like this is a nothing game.

[00:23:02] It's not like it's just some throwaway sort of, it's licensed and sometimes licensed games

[00:23:09] are just trash, but this is not one of those games.

[00:23:12] It's just, I don't, yeah, I don't know.

[00:23:14] I think I, I'm just attributing that to the year.

[00:23:17] Yeah.

[00:23:17] But I don't know if that's true.

[00:23:19] I mean, it's a fair point.

[00:23:20] I thought about that too.

[00:23:21] Like the PS2 was releasing that year.

[00:23:24] The Dreamcast was already out.

[00:23:25] The GameCube and, uh, actually I'm not sure.

[00:23:28] Did the Xbox release in 2002?

[00:23:30] The GameCube was at 2001.

[00:23:32] 2001.

[00:23:32] Xbox was 2001.

[00:23:34] GameCube was, I think, probably still being called Project Dolphin at the time would be

[00:23:38] my guess, but it was like around the corner.

[00:23:40] Like it was, they were, they were talking about it.

[00:23:42] Yeah.

[00:23:43] Like, so the hype for next gen consoles was real and I know this, you know, this is no

[00:23:49] 3D platformer either coming from Rare, which I always wondered if, if they made a Mickey

[00:23:55] 3D platformer at this time, it would have been the best Mickey platformer ever because

[00:24:00] it would have been off the heels of Banjo-Tooie.

[00:24:02] It would have been Rare Mickey Mouse.

[00:24:06] It would have been awesome.

[00:24:07] I don't know why they went in the cart racer direction.

[00:24:09] I'm not mad about it.

[00:24:10] I like that this game exists.

[00:24:12] I actually think it's a pretty, pretty cool cart racer.

[00:24:16] They, they did release one on PS1 as well.

[00:24:19] Oh, I'm not, not made by Rare.

[00:24:21] I don't know who made it.

[00:24:22] It's, oh goodness gracious.

[00:24:25] I can't think of what it's called, but it's got Chip and Dale on the cover.

[00:24:28] I believe.

[00:24:30] Mickey Speedway PS.

[00:24:32] Is it called Mickey Speedway?

[00:24:33] No, it's not Mickey Speedway.

[00:24:35] Oh, it's, it's like Disney magical racing adventure or something.

[00:24:39] Some more generic sounding thing than that.

[00:24:42] Yeah.

[00:24:43] Um, Walt Disney's world quest magical racing tour.

[00:24:47] That sounds really, it rolls off the tongue.

[00:24:49] Yeah.

[00:24:49] Really?

[00:24:50] It just fantastic title.

[00:24:51] You know, dynamics made it.

[00:24:53] Oh, that's yeah.

[00:24:54] Yeah.

[00:24:54] That's right.

[00:24:55] Wow.

[00:24:55] Nice.

[00:24:56] And you know, looking at, looking at the title, like just, just to pull back a little bit here.

[00:25:02] Yeah.

[00:25:03] I always call it Mickey Speedway.

[00:25:05] Yeah.

[00:25:06] I never call it unless I have to specifically specify to someone Mickey's Speedway USA.

[00:25:12] Yeah.

[00:25:13] And it's, it, the USA part of it.

[00:25:16] That's the part I don't like.

[00:25:18] Um, it, it, the, the only reason why I would have, I like, I would have liked it if it was Mickey Speedway USA and then they followed it up and they did like Mickey Speedway.

[00:25:33] Asia, Asia or yeah.

[00:25:35] Like some, like they did Australia, like they did some like different stuff.

[00:25:38] Like that would be super cool if they started doing different countries.

[00:25:41] This just occurred to me.

[00:25:43] So first of all, the reason why that is, if anyone doesn't know is because every track is based off of a quote unquote real location.

[00:25:49] So you, you mentioned Chicago before we talked about Oregon and Malibu.

[00:25:53] There's, there's New York.

[00:25:54] Um, there's whatever, there's like two dozen tracks or something, which is not a small amount.

[00:25:59] So there's a decent amount as you unlock more.

[00:26:00] Um, it just occurred to me, maybe if this game came out earlier or if they made like a, an actual sequel, they were going for the cruising world, cruising USA thing.

[00:26:11] Mickey Speedway USA, Mickey Speedway world.

[00:26:14] Like I wonder if that's what they were thinking of as to why they did that because those games are largely the same.

[00:26:21] I would say in my opinion, at least they feel largely that there are arcade games just ported to consoles, right?

[00:26:29] Um, you're just in different locations with different vehicles.

[00:26:32] That's mostly the difference.

[00:26:34] This could, could have been the same if they made another one.

[00:26:37] I wouldn't be surprised if they just called it world or international, or like you said, name a continent, you know, um, Mickey Speedway South America or something would be kind of cool.

[00:26:46] You'd go through all these areas in Brazil and Peru.

[00:26:49] And like, that'd be, that'd be awesome, which is what you do in, in cruising world as you go through those types of places.

[00:26:55] But this would have like the Disney spin on it.

[00:26:57] So, uh, maybe.

[00:26:59] And that's one thing that's also kind of weird.

[00:27:02] The Disney spin, like really isn't there for a lot of tracks.

[00:27:07] No, it's really just like a cartoon look on what they say is a real spot.

[00:27:12] Yeah.

[00:27:12] They, they go for almost realism when it, I mean, as far as realism goes on an N64 in the year 2000.

[00:27:19] With a cart racer.

[00:27:20] With a cart racer.

[00:27:21] Driving around, yeah.

[00:27:22] But for the most part, nothing about these tracks is Disney.

[00:27:26] Nothing about these tracks is rare, really.

[00:27:30] I mean, they're, they don't look bad by any means.

[00:27:32] Like, don't get me wrong.

[00:27:33] I'm not like saying they're bad looking.

[00:27:36] They just, they don't have a lot of finesse to them.

[00:27:39] They don't have a lot of style.

[00:27:42] And there, there is exceptions though.

[00:27:45] Like New York.

[00:27:46] New York has a statue of Liberty, Mickey, and.

[00:27:50] Yes.

[00:27:51] A bunch of, like, if you look in the background, you'll see a bunch of statues of different Disney characters.

[00:27:55] Uh, I actually just noticed that the Indianapolis track has a blimp in the background.

[00:28:01] That has the Disney logo on it, which is kind of cool.

[00:28:04] Okay.

[00:28:04] But there's not a whole lot of that.

[00:28:07] No.

[00:28:07] You'd think there would be more.

[00:28:07] Like, even then, I think I noticed the statue of Liberty one because, I don't know, I feel like.

[00:28:12] That one's pretty obvious.

[00:28:13] Pretty obvious.

[00:28:14] Yeah.

[00:28:15] And I think I've probably seen that in other cartoons and stuff.

[00:28:18] So, like, it's almost like something that I've recognized before or seen before.

[00:28:22] Um, but yeah, there's not, there's not a lot.

[00:28:24] Like, um, where's the other one?

[00:28:26] Oh, the Philadelphia one, which is like, you're sort of on, like, the docks and stuff.

[00:28:30] And there's opportunities.

[00:28:32] Like, why don't you just, like, put a character sort of by, you know, every once in a while that pops up and does something silly.

[00:28:38] Yeah.

[00:28:38] Or it doesn't have to interfere in the race.

[00:28:41] But, like, you can have ideas here.

[00:28:43] Have Chippendale fishing or something in the background.

[00:28:46] Something, yeah.

[00:28:47] Like, it's really just the, the core characters that are the racers.

[00:28:52] And then, I don't know which, if it's Huey or Louie or Dewey or whatever that's doing the, um, the countdown for the beginning of the race.

[00:29:02] That's it.

[00:29:03] I think it's Louie.

[00:29:04] That's all.

[00:29:04] Yeah, I don't remember the colors.

[00:29:06] I mean, I, I don't remember.

[00:29:08] I get them mixed up every single time.

[00:29:10] Yeah, I used to know.

[00:29:11] I used to know.

[00:29:12] I think, I think Dewey's.

[00:29:15] Blue.

[00:29:15] Blue, I think.

[00:29:16] No, wait.

[00:29:17] No, I think Dewey's red.

[00:29:18] I think.

[00:29:18] Should we look it up or should we just keep guessing?

[00:29:20] I think we should just give someone, give, give stuff for people to talk about, uh.

[00:29:26] Because what about that?

[00:29:26] What do you think on the podcast?

[00:29:28] Which one is, is Huey?

[00:29:30] Don't look it up.

[00:29:31] What is your first guess?

[00:29:33] Louie is green and Dewey is red.

[00:29:36] That's my guess.

[00:29:38] Um, okay.

[00:29:39] Let's see here.

[00:29:39] I think we agree on Louie being green.

[00:29:42] Yeah, for some reason that sounds right.

[00:29:45] Yeah.

[00:29:46] Um, everything I look up is like the old comic where they don't have any colors.

[00:29:52] The mystery continues.

[00:29:54] Yeah, the mystery continues.

[00:29:56] As far as this picture shows, Huey is red, Dewey is green, and Louie is blue.

[00:30:05] I do not remember what I said now.

[00:30:08] I think we said Louie was green.

[00:30:10] But anyways, not critical.

[00:30:12] But also, basically the point is, they could have maybe Disney'd this up a little bit more.

[00:30:18] And maybe, you know, these are licensed properties.

[00:30:20] Maybe they weren't able to.

[00:30:22] There could be some sort of, you know, small reasons why that kind of stuff happened.

[00:30:26] Who knows, right?

[00:30:27] But, um, but I think that largely, it's just, it just feels like a racer.

[00:30:34] And it's not, um...

[00:30:36] Yeah.

[00:30:36] That it didn't necessarily have to be Disney, but I, there's some, there's still Disney personality in it when it comes to, I would say, like the sound effects and some of the voices and things like that that pop up.

[00:30:48] So that, I think, is where it is.

[00:30:50] How do you feel about the voices?

[00:30:54] So, they're okay.

[00:30:55] The racer's voices are fine.

[00:30:57] But I think they talk a little too much sometimes.

[00:31:01] You can turn it off in their settings.

[00:31:02] You can turn it off.

[00:31:03] Because there's stuff happening behind you.

[00:31:05] Yeah.

[00:31:07] That is, like, going off.

[00:31:08] Like, you know, Minnie or whoever is, like, saying, oh my god, I got hit!

[00:31:11] Or whatever her quote is.

[00:31:12] And it's like, I don't, I don't care.

[00:31:14] You're five spots behind me.

[00:31:15] Why, you know, why is that playing?

[00:31:17] I'm going to see if this, actually, I'm going to pull it back a bit and see if.

[00:31:20] I had to listen.

[00:31:25] I loved it.

[00:31:27] I, like, people complained about it all the time.

[00:31:30] But I found it hilarious.

[00:31:36] Lori!

[00:31:37] Lori!

[00:31:39] Oh, gee!

[00:31:41] And they are the actual actors, too.

[00:31:44] Yes.

[00:31:45] Which is great.

[00:31:46] No matter what it sounds like, that's great.

[00:31:49] That's awesome.

[00:31:50] Um.

[00:31:52] I think, um.

[00:31:53] I think I get hit here, too.

[00:31:58] Oh, gee!

[00:32:01] So it's, it's, it's good.

[00:32:03] I think it's pretty well done.

[00:32:04] And like we've said with other games, like, the sound can be hit and miss on the 64.

[00:32:08] But, like, largely it's usually pretty good.

[00:32:10] And I think the music goes a long way.

[00:32:12] With something like this, like the personality of cartoons.

[00:32:14] And, like, this kind of cartoon.

[00:32:16] Music matters.

[00:32:16] And it's pretty good in this.

[00:32:18] Um.

[00:32:19] I liked it.

[00:32:20] Yeah.

[00:32:21] Yeah, the music, the music is one of the highlights for me.

[00:32:24] Yeah.

[00:32:25] He did a great job.

[00:32:26] It just, like, especially that title track.

[00:32:29] But even, even little things is like the menu.

[00:32:31] Like, the menu is pretty.

[00:32:33] Yeah, let's go back to the accent.

[00:32:34] It sticks in your brain.

[00:32:34] Oh, we have to talk about the menu.

[00:32:36] Because there's other parts of the menu that are just awesome.

[00:32:39] Yeah, the menu's pretty cool.

[00:32:49] These are the kind of menus I love.

[00:32:51] If anyone's not watching it, what this is, is a sort of pan back and forth of, like, a bedroom.

[00:32:59] That has a Nintendo 64 plugged in with a yellow controller, I will say.

[00:33:04] It's a cool controller.

[00:33:05] Um.

[00:33:06] Plugged into an old school sort of TV that looks like it's from, like, the 50s or something.

[00:33:10] A very, like, Disney Mickey style kind of thing.

[00:33:13] And it just sort of, like, pans around, you know, the room.

[00:33:16] And you have, like, pictures of the Disney characters and whatever.

[00:33:19] And you can just, honestly, you can sit here forever and just watch it.

[00:33:22] And listen to this music.

[00:33:24] Um.

[00:33:25] Yep.

[00:33:25] And as you, like, navigate the menu, you have to press A.

[00:33:28] You have to select your character before you can actually get to the other parts of the room that let you select things on the menu.

[00:33:33] Yeah, which is a little weird.

[00:33:34] I thought that was kind of weird.

[00:33:34] It's a little weird.

[00:33:35] I wish you could just, like, pan left and right with the joystick.

[00:33:39] Well, I don't understand why you can't, why you're not picking your character before, like, after you pick your race.

[00:33:45] That's what was weird to me.

[00:33:46] It feels a little backwards.

[00:33:48] The back, like, it should be, it should be, that should be after you pick your race.

[00:33:51] But, I don't know.

[00:33:52] Maybe that's, although I guess the other kart racers don't do that.

[00:33:55] It just feels weird because of the way the menu is set up.

[00:33:57] Yeah.

[00:33:58] Because you start with this shot of the room, like we just said.

[00:34:01] And then you, like, exit that and you see characters on the road.

[00:34:05] And then you go back to the room.

[00:34:06] So, it kind of feels disjointed in that way.

[00:34:09] Yeah.

[00:34:11] Yeah.

[00:34:11] Because then, after you pick your racer, you go back to the bedroom and another part.

[00:34:16] And all the races and stuff are on, like, toy blocks.

[00:34:20] Like, wooden kids' toy blocks that are stacked on top of each other.

[00:34:23] I loved that.

[00:34:24] I thought that was a nice little touch.

[00:34:26] I thought that was cool.

[00:34:27] Yeah, it is cool.

[00:34:28] And then, whenever you select a race, you go to, like, a pegboard, like a bulletin board kind of thing with the different tracks laid out.

[00:34:35] And then, if you go to, like, multiplayer, you go to, like, there's a little...

[00:34:43] I'm trying to think if that's practice mode or if that's multiplayer.

[00:34:48] I think it's multiplayer takes you to the little race car track with the little toy cars.

[00:34:52] Oh, yeah.

[00:34:52] Yeah, I think so.

[00:34:53] Yeah, I think that was multiplayer.

[00:34:54] Yeah.

[00:34:54] I just selected it.

[00:34:56] I never actually played it, so...

[00:34:57] Yeah.

[00:34:58] And then there's a computer for, like, the options and stuff.

[00:35:01] And cheat codes, which you do...

[00:35:02] You actually unlock cheat codes as you go, which is pretty cool.

[00:35:07] I like when games do that.

[00:35:07] I like when games do that.

[00:35:08] Yeah, it makes it...

[00:35:09] They don't have to hide it behind a manual or whatever.

[00:35:11] Yeah, and you don't have to enter a specific code.

[00:35:14] It feels like a...

[00:35:15] Mm-hmm.

[00:35:15] It feels like you unlocked it rather than you're cheesing the game, you know, which I like that.

[00:35:22] Right, right.

[00:35:23] It's a reason of...

[00:35:24] It's another way of having unlockables when that wasn't always a thing at that time, you know?

[00:35:29] Like, it was about entering a cheat code.

[00:35:31] That's usually how that stuff works.

[00:35:33] Yeah.

[00:35:34] So that's a big difference, yeah.

[00:35:35] A lot of the cheat codes are, like, cosmetic stuff, too, to, like, items, like, changing the way things look, which is pretty cool.

[00:35:44] Yeah, yeah.

[00:35:44] And the game has some cool, like, here's a Mount Rushmore of Disney heads.

[00:35:49] That was pretty neat.

[00:35:51] I don't think I noticed that before.

[00:35:54] Yeah, when you're not worried about the track, you just look at the stuff around.

[00:35:56] Yeah, you're just looking at the background.

[00:35:58] Like, it's great.

[00:35:59] Yeah, so it's...

[00:36:01] And I would say, like, the style of it, too.

[00:36:03] Like, the characters, like you said, it's based on a version of the Diddy Kong Racing Engine.

[00:36:12] I think that the other racers, when they're not right beside you, it kind of looks like the sort of flat, pre-rendered stuff that is in Mario Kart 64 a little bit more than it is in Diddy Kong.

[00:36:26] So I don't know if that's a difference.

[00:36:27] And, like, to me, anyway, that's what it looked like.

[00:36:29] Like, they almost have, like, that, you know, that paper look where you spin around them.

[00:36:33] Not your character.

[00:36:34] Your character looks fully 3D or whatever.

[00:36:36] But I think it's probably just a memory and rendering type of thing where they just have to sort of make a choice of how that looks.

[00:36:42] But I think it changes when you get really close.

[00:36:44] When you're far away, they kind of look a little bit more flat.

[00:36:47] It doesn't bother me.

[00:36:48] I just noticed that as, like, a little graphical, like, flourish or choice that they probably forced them, I guess.

[00:36:54] Rare put a lot of details into the characters.

[00:36:57] They look great.

[00:36:58] Yeah, they do.

[00:37:00] Like, you were just playing as Daisy.

[00:37:01] And Daisy, you can see the individual feathers on the back of her head, which is pretty cool.

[00:37:06] Yeah.

[00:37:06] If you play as Goofy, his ears flop in the air, which is super cool.

[00:37:11] One of the first things I noticed, I was like, wow, that's a great little detail.

[00:37:14] I learned after the fact that this followed Disney's, like, strict rules about Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

[00:37:24] Their ears are always supposed to be, like, recognizable as a silhouette.

[00:37:29] And so they're always supposed to be, like, flat.

[00:37:30] They have to be even.

[00:37:32] Yeah.

[00:37:32] So whatever angle that Mickey and Minnie are in this game, their ears are noticeably, like, the same.

[00:37:39] Yeah.

[00:37:39] Yeah.

[00:37:40] So Rare, like, paid attention to that, which is really cool because not all games do that.

[00:37:43] It was probably a requirement, but it's, like, like you said, silhouette is how to do it.

[00:37:49] So if you ever see that, you know, the iconic Mickey Mouse silhouette shape, you know, it has to be the even ears on either side.

[00:37:58] If you look when they turn their heads, it's like their ears, like, one goes up and the other goes down.

[00:38:04] Yeah.

[00:38:04] Rather than, like, physically turning the ears so you don't see the front of the ear ever, you always see behind the ears, basically.

[00:38:12] Yeah.

[00:38:12] Yeah.

[00:38:12] So there's little touches and stuff.

[00:38:15] I want to talk about the items because this is a kart racer.

[00:38:19] It's a kart racer.

[00:38:20] So there's items, right?

[00:38:21] There's always something to either screw you over or screw your opponents over.

[00:38:26] And I think included in that can be, like, you talked about it a little bit, but, like, the environment sort of, like, boosts and things like that.

[00:38:32] I want to mention the boost stuff first because I don't think there's very many of them, and I was a little disappointed in that.

[00:38:37] To me, it felt like there wasn't that many.

[00:38:41] I don't know if that mattered to you or if you even agree with me.

[00:38:46] Some stages, some tracks, I can see that because it's like you get these big, large...

[00:38:52] Actually, the one you're on right now kind of has a few.

[00:38:56] There's a few.

[00:38:56] There's only a few.

[00:38:57] It just feels, especially on the lower difficulties, it just feels like the boosts are few and far between.

[00:39:05] So you're moving kind of painstakingly slow.

[00:39:10] And the items don't really help balance that out so much.

[00:39:14] I feel like...

[00:39:15] I don't know what the percentage is for, like, getting specific items.

[00:39:21] But I feel like the ones that give you boosts of speed or, like, there's a bubble that you go into that gives you, like, a turbo.

[00:39:29] Like, it just maxes out your stats and everything.

[00:39:31] It's essentially the star.

[00:39:33] Yeah, it's essentially the star.

[00:39:34] It's very hard to get that.

[00:39:36] I got it, like, a couple times.

[00:39:39] And that's it.

[00:39:40] Yeah.

[00:39:41] I don't even know what it was.

[00:39:42] Even if you're in last place, like, it's just hard to get even then.

[00:39:47] Like, it will not show up for you if you're in, like, above third place.

[00:39:50] So that's a big difference with this.

[00:39:52] Like, I mentioned, I think, a little while ago that, like, the rubber banding is here.

[00:39:56] But it, you know, until you're the later difficulties, it doesn't feel as egregious as it does, especially in Mario Kart 64.

[00:40:04] Like, it's terrible in that.

[00:40:05] You're always...

[00:40:06] No matter what speed, no matter what difficulty you're playing at, if you're in first, that second place guy is up your ass no matter what you do.

[00:40:12] Like, it just happens.

[00:40:13] You're going to have, like, a couple seconds of breathing room.

[00:40:15] This, you know, as you get to the harder difficulties, I think just all the racers are pretty good.

[00:40:20] So it doesn't feel like it's always just one guy or one character right behind you the entire time.

[00:40:25] Or you're always trying to beat one character.

[00:40:28] That's actually one thing that I notice is on the medium and higher difficulty, it's not always you and one other racer that are getting all the points, essentially.

[00:40:38] Sometimes if you come in second and, you know, let's say Mickey wins the first race, you come in second.

[00:40:43] If you win the next one, Mickey could come in fourth in the next one.

[00:40:47] Yeah, right.

[00:40:47] And I think that's interesting.

[00:40:49] I think that makes things feel more balanced and you're not always just looking for one sort of enemy racer.

[00:40:56] You know, I like that that that was the case.

[00:40:58] And I think that's part of the balancing of just how they programmed it and stuff and the lack of the rubber banding and things like that.

[00:41:04] Yeah.

[00:41:05] I thought that was a really good choice.

[00:41:07] And you know what else they do?

[00:41:08] Yeah.

[00:41:09] They offer retries.

[00:41:10] You can have two retries per Grand Prix, which is actually very helpful if you're stuck.

[00:41:18] Because inevitably, it's one particular track that you will struggle with.

[00:41:23] Yeah, usually.

[00:41:24] It'll just be one.

[00:41:25] Like, you'll be fine on all the rest.

[00:41:27] For me, in professional difficulty playing on New York track, which is what's being played on right now, I was Pete.

[00:41:35] There was a point I just could not win.

[00:41:38] And I played the track perfectly.

[00:41:40] I mean, I hit every single boost, every single turn as quick as I could.

[00:41:44] I was getting decent items.

[00:41:46] I just could not win.

[00:41:48] And I retried several times.

[00:41:51] It just was not happening.

[00:41:52] I think I maxed out at, like, fourth place.

[00:41:56] And I had won every other race.

[00:41:58] So I still was like, I don't remember if I got first or second.

[00:42:02] But I ended up having to switch characters and do whichever one I unlocked.

[00:42:08] Whichever one of the triplets I unlocked.

[00:42:11] Whatever color.

[00:42:12] I don't know.

[00:42:12] I think it's the blue one.

[00:42:14] I can't remember.

[00:42:15] But I know that Louie is actually considered to be the best racer in the game.

[00:42:19] Because his stats...

[00:42:20] Oh, is he?

[00:42:21] Okay, I missed that.

[00:42:21] Yeah, his stats are...

[00:42:23] The green one.

[00:42:24] If that is Louie.

[00:42:25] I'm pretty sure that's Louie.

[00:42:26] I'm getting...

[00:42:26] I'm confused...

[00:42:27] I wasn't as confused going into this.

[00:42:29] Now I'm like so confused.

[00:42:30] I'm just going to let this keep going.

[00:42:31] I'm not going to correct you.

[00:42:32] Or check at all.

[00:42:33] I believe Louie is the best racer in the game.

[00:42:36] His stats are fairly high.

[00:42:38] You know what?

[00:42:38] I think I actually have the stats over here.

[00:42:41] I have two.

[00:42:42] Because he is...

[00:42:50] Huey has...

[00:42:51] Yes.

[00:42:52] Okay, so Huey's red.

[00:42:54] Louie is green.

[00:42:55] And Dewey is blue.

[00:42:57] So I think we were wrong.

[00:42:58] Yeah, so Louie is the best possible racer.

[00:43:01] Or regarded as the best possible racer.

[00:43:03] He has two out of five in weight.

[00:43:06] So he's not actually super heavy.

[00:43:09] He's on the lighter side.

[00:43:10] But he's not light light.

[00:43:12] He still has a little weight to him.

[00:43:15] His handling is maxed out.

[00:43:17] Which is very important when it comes to the later races.

[00:43:20] Later.

[00:43:20] That helps you so much.

[00:43:21] His acceleration is nearly maxed out.

[00:43:24] It's missing one dot at the top.

[00:43:26] So that's very fast acceleration.

[00:43:28] And his top speed is average.

[00:43:30] So he basically has like the highest stats without being just average in everything.

[00:43:37] Right?

[00:43:39] So I...

[00:43:40] And he's the...

[00:43:41] He's the...

[00:43:42] Is he the first unlock or second unlock that you get?

[00:43:45] He's the unlock...

[00:43:47] You have to get three...

[00:43:49] You have to get first in three cups on amateur and intermediate.

[00:43:52] Which is not crazy difficult to get.

[00:43:55] Like it's not easy.

[00:43:56] But it's not crazy difficult to get.

[00:43:58] It's not like he's, you know, impossible.

[00:44:00] Impossible.

[00:44:02] So those are the first two difficulties.

[00:44:04] Yeah.

[00:44:05] Of the races.

[00:44:06] So that's, you know, that's manageable and stuff.

[00:44:08] So you don't have to like play this thing for dozens of hours just to get them.

[00:44:11] So that helps.

[00:44:14] Um...

[00:44:14] The other thing too is...

[00:44:15] I want to talk...

[00:44:16] Go back to the items for a minute too.

[00:44:18] Is that...

[00:44:19] What's...

[00:44:19] You mentioned that...

[00:44:21] And this is kind of how we bounced off it I think.

[00:44:24] Is that the rubber banding stuff.

[00:44:25] Is that like the items don't even respond that way.

[00:44:27] Which is interesting.

[00:44:29] Right?

[00:44:29] Like there is like this percentage of each item.

[00:44:32] I very often got the baseball.

[00:44:35] Uh...

[00:44:36] Yep.

[00:44:36] And the sludge thing.

[00:44:39] Which is like the banana.

[00:44:40] Essentially.

[00:44:41] Listen.

[00:44:42] I am...

[00:44:42] I was very...

[00:44:44] In my video.

[00:44:46] I was very...

[00:44:49] Reserved.

[00:44:49] When I talked about how much I hate the...

[00:44:53] Uh...

[00:44:53] I think it's called the Racer Tracer.

[00:44:56] It's like the red remote controlled car that you launch.

[00:45:00] It's like the red shell in Mario Kart.

[00:45:02] That's what it is.

[00:45:02] Uh...

[00:45:03] It's like the red shell in Mario Kart.

[00:45:05] If it didn't work.

[00:45:06] Yeah.

[00:45:06] That's what it is.

[00:45:07] It doesn't work as well.

[00:45:08] You're...

[00:45:08] Yeah.

[00:45:08] You're not wrong.

[00:45:09] You're not wrong.

[00:45:09] The...

[00:45:10] The...

[00:45:10] There's an RC airplane.

[00:45:12] That works perfectly.

[00:45:13] That is...

[00:45:14] That is what I consider the red shell.

[00:45:16] Because that's great.

[00:45:17] And functionally it's the same.

[00:45:19] The only difference is the...

[00:45:20] The RC plane one flies.

[00:45:23] And it homes in on the opponent.

[00:45:25] But it will actually make turns.

[00:45:27] You cannot hit with the Racer Tracer.

[00:45:30] Unless they're right in front of you.

[00:45:33] Oh yeah.

[00:45:33] I guess so.

[00:45:34] I didn't actually really think about it that way.

[00:45:36] If they...

[00:45:36] Yeah.

[00:45:37] Yeah.

[00:45:37] If they turn...

[00:45:38] If they do anything, it will not hit them.

[00:45:40] And in fact, more often than not, it would just go straight into the wall.

[00:45:45] So every time I got it, I just...

[00:45:46] Yeah, I found that too.

[00:45:47] I would just immediately press Z and just get rid of it.

[00:45:49] Because it was useless.

[00:45:51] I'm like, forget it.

[00:45:53] But to get that other one.

[00:45:55] To get the plane.

[00:45:55] To get the RC thing.

[00:45:56] See, here it is.

[00:45:57] Right here.

[00:45:57] Let's see what happens.

[00:45:58] Yeah.

[00:45:58] Well, no one's in front of me.

[00:45:59] So it's not going to do anything.

[00:46:00] I think I just held on to it.

[00:46:03] But...

[00:46:03] Yeah.

[00:46:03] The plane one is...

[00:46:06] Was, again, one of those ones that's really hard to get.

[00:46:08] I got it a handful of times.

[00:46:09] That was it.

[00:46:10] And I guess that's okay.

[00:46:13] That it's not always...

[00:46:15] You only get the thing that gives you the advantage.

[00:46:18] But that does increase the difficulty.

[00:46:20] Yeah.

[00:46:20] That makes it harder.

[00:46:21] If you are on the middle or, God forbid, the hardest difficulty.

[00:46:25] The professional one.

[00:46:28] And you don't get the item you need.

[00:46:29] That's it.

[00:46:30] You're done.

[00:46:30] Like, if you've done a lap...

[00:46:32] I found if you've done a lap and you don't get the item you need to help you get back.

[00:46:36] Or the computer doesn't screw up in some way.

[00:46:39] You're done.

[00:46:40] Like, you gotta start over.

[00:46:43] Races aren't super long like most kart racers.

[00:46:45] So a couple minutes is all it is.

[00:46:46] But, like, you use those retries.

[00:46:48] Like you said.

[00:46:49] You gotta use those retries.

[00:46:49] Otherwise, you're kind of screwed.

[00:46:51] And the thing that kind of stinks about the items...

[00:46:55] And it's...

[00:46:56] There's only two items.

[00:46:58] Unless I'm wrong about that number count.

[00:47:00] But I'm pretty sure there's only two items that you can use forwards and backwards.

[00:47:04] Like, you can...

[00:47:05] Yeah, that's the baseball.

[00:47:06] Yeah, the baseball and the goo.

[00:47:07] The slime.

[00:47:08] Or the paint.

[00:47:09] And the slime.

[00:47:10] Yeah, I think that's it.

[00:47:10] Yeah.

[00:47:11] Because you can throw it...

[00:47:12] You can throw the paint forward or you can just drop it like an oil slick right behind you.

[00:47:16] Yeah.

[00:47:16] And the baseball is the same.

[00:47:18] You can launch it forward like a green shell.

[00:47:20] Or you can, like, just drop it immediately behind you.

[00:47:22] It doesn't move.

[00:47:23] It just stays there.

[00:47:24] And it's sort of like a little trap you set.

[00:47:26] Yep.

[00:47:26] I did like that.

[00:47:28] I like that.

[00:47:29] That's cool.

[00:47:30] I feel like if the racer tracer could do backwards, it would have been useful.

[00:47:34] Oh, for sure.

[00:47:35] Because the guy would be up your butt and you're just like, oh, we're going to get the guy behind me.

[00:47:39] That would be great.

[00:47:39] It would be...

[00:47:40] That would be so useful if it did that.

[00:47:43] I did like with the baseball.

[00:47:44] There's a little bit of, like, a spin on the shell sort of idea.

[00:47:47] Is that when you...

[00:47:49] It's called...

[00:47:49] What's it called?

[00:47:50] Baseball chucker, by the way?

[00:47:51] Yeah.

[00:47:52] Baseball chucker.

[00:47:52] That sounds right.

[00:47:53] Yeah.

[00:47:53] And, like, there's a voice every time you pick it up.

[00:47:55] Baseball chucker.

[00:47:56] Like, I like that.

[00:47:56] I thought that was kind of fun.

[00:47:58] I like that.

[00:48:00] The thing is about that one is if you throw it, no one's in front of you or you don't hit someone, it bounces off the wall a couple times.

[00:48:05] And it stops at a certain point.

[00:48:07] Yeah.

[00:48:08] And just sits on the track wherever it loses momentum.

[00:48:12] I thought that was kind of cool.

[00:48:14] Like, you don't plan on where that's going to go.

[00:48:16] But that also means, like, oh, that could be yours.

[00:48:19] It could hurt you.

[00:48:20] Yeah.

[00:48:20] Yeah.

[00:48:20] That you're going to dodge later.

[00:48:22] Right?

[00:48:22] So, I thought that was kind of interesting.

[00:48:24] It's a very small idea.

[00:48:27] But I do think that at least it added a little bit of a different personality compared to, you know, if you're comparing this to Mario Kart, for example.

[00:48:36] So, that was interesting.

[00:48:37] But I, for the most part, I don't think there's enough items.

[00:48:41] And I don't think they're that great.

[00:48:43] I think it's one of the weaker parts of this game for sure.

[00:48:46] They're definitely, they're not horrible.

[00:48:49] But they're not good.

[00:48:52] They're just okay.

[00:48:53] They're not that exciting.

[00:48:54] Like, they're just not that cool.

[00:48:56] I don't know what the limitation, like, why there's such a limitation on them and all that.

[00:49:02] But, you know.

[00:49:03] They're not, it doesn't have the variety.

[00:49:06] Oh, there is the Thundercloud one too, which is also really hard to get.

[00:49:11] I honestly, I think I got that once.

[00:49:13] Yeah.

[00:49:13] That one's also really hard to get.

[00:49:15] In a few hours of playing.

[00:49:16] I don't even know exactly how long I played it.

[00:49:18] But going through two difficulties completely, I think I may have gotten it once.

[00:49:24] Yeah.

[00:49:25] That's, that's crazy.

[00:49:26] With like some retries and stuff in there too.

[00:49:28] It was not nothing.

[00:49:30] Like, I played this enough.

[00:49:31] Now that we're, now that we're like sitting here chatting about it, I'm just thinking to myself, like, I don't think it's that there weren't enough items.

[00:49:39] I think it's you don't get the variety of items that you should as you're doing the race.

[00:49:45] Because you only, you really get.

[00:49:48] Three.

[00:49:48] The baseball chucker, the slime, and the racer tracer over and over and over and over and over.

[00:49:54] And then occasionally you get something else.

[00:49:56] The magnum flyer, that's the name of it.

[00:49:59] And then the, the boost.

[00:50:03] Oh yeah, I forgot about the boost.

[00:50:05] There is a boost.

[00:50:06] Again, something that is, that is like the mushroom in Mario Kart.

[00:50:10] I'm going to keep comparing it to Mario Kart.

[00:50:11] But like the mushroom.

[00:50:12] It's fair to compare it to Mario Kart.

[00:50:13] It's so, it's so rare to get.

[00:50:16] Why?

[00:50:17] Yeah.

[00:50:17] It's like, we're talking, if I, if I had to list these into percentages, it's like racer tracer, probably like.

[00:50:25] Like.

[00:50:26] Baseball, I would say.

[00:50:27] 40% chance.

[00:50:28] Yeah.

[00:50:29] I would say the baseball chucker, like 30% chance.

[00:50:33] I would say the slime.

[00:50:35] Let's see, what are we at?

[00:50:36] We're at 70.

[00:50:37] The slime's probably 25%.

[00:50:39] And then the rest of the items are in that little window there.

[00:50:42] Yeah.

[00:50:43] For the rest of the percentage.

[00:50:45] Yeah.

[00:50:45] That's what it feels like.

[00:50:47] It's, it's crazy.

[00:50:48] That, that doesn't make any sense to me.

[00:50:49] Like, um, I don't know.

[00:50:51] It's just, it's just how they did it.

[00:50:53] They just, they took a different approach with the items as far as like when you get them and how you get them.

[00:50:57] Yeah.

[00:50:58] Like I said, I, I do think that makes this more difficult than it needs to be on the higher difficulties.

[00:51:03] Um, I think that would have made, made a bit of a difference.

[00:51:07] Um.

[00:51:08] Yeah.

[00:51:08] And it's interesting.

[00:51:08] They went the Mario cart route with like individual items as opposed to Diddy Kong racing, because that's one of the things I loved about Diddy Kong racing was that you could.

[00:51:17] We both love that.

[00:51:17] You could plan out your items and have strategy to it.

[00:51:20] Whereas this is, it's just the random, you know, it's a, it's a party, party racer versus.

[00:51:27] Yeah.

[00:51:28] Competitive.

[00:51:29] That's how I see Diddy Kong racing is competitive.

[00:51:32] Yeah.

[00:51:32] I mean, but it's, again, I think that that's very much like the single player thing too.

[00:51:37] Yeah.

[00:51:37] You're in this, you're in this experience.

[00:51:39] You're in this, the story, which by the way, there's a story to this.

[00:51:42] We'll get to that in just a second.

[00:51:44] Just reminded me that there is a story to this game.

[00:51:47] Um.

[00:51:48] That, uh, the, the, the, the, the sort of like world of Diddy Kong racing is you, you're the racer.

[00:51:54] You're going through these races for reasons.

[00:51:56] Like all those things add to the whole choice that you were just talking about and being able to have like strategy.

[00:52:00] Um, it's not an RPG obviously, but like, you know, you are planning within a race and that's interesting.

[00:52:08] Um, and then this is like you said, just randomized essentially is what it is.

[00:52:12] So, um, what did you think of the story?

[00:52:14] Actually, Jiggy, why don't you explain to me, explain to the audience what the story is here?

[00:52:19] Cause there's a story to this game.

[00:52:20] Yep.

[00:52:20] So the weasels, those darn weasels who we, we just met decided to steal Pluto's diamond collar.

[00:52:30] Mm-hmm.

[00:52:31] Uh, and so in an effort to steal Pluto's diamond collar, they stole Pluto.

[00:52:37] Cause you know, the collar doesn't just come off the dog.

[00:52:39] It doesn't come off.

[00:52:40] It doesn't come off.

[00:52:41] Uh, also it's fake.

[00:52:42] Spoiler.

[00:52:43] Mickey.

[00:52:44] Yeah.

[00:52:44] Spoiler.

[00:52:45] Mickey literally is, is so terrible to his dog that he glued the collar to his neck.

[00:52:51] Yep.

[00:52:51] That's it.

[00:52:52] It's, it's combo deal.

[00:52:53] You have to have.

[00:52:54] So the weasels leave a note saying that they did this and.

[00:52:59] How nice of them.

[00:52:59] Yeah.

[00:53:00] And for some reason they require us to be professional racers to, I'm not even joking.

[00:53:08] It's not even the, like, we have to go across the country and chase him across the country

[00:53:13] and he calls his friends for help.

[00:53:14] No.

[00:53:15] Because that is, that is what happens at first.

[00:53:17] But if you go and you start beating races, the professor literally says, the weasels require

[00:53:24] you to be professional racers.

[00:53:27] Yeah.

[00:53:27] I don't.

[00:53:29] Okay.

[00:53:30] It's fine.

[00:53:31] Like, sure.

[00:53:31] Like this part right here, Mickey says, Hey, everybody's got, he's, he's calling him

[00:53:35] up on his blue phone.

[00:53:36] Hey, everybody.

[00:53:37] The weasels took Pluto.

[00:53:38] Meet me at Ludwig's shop.

[00:53:40] We have to get race cars to go after him.

[00:53:42] Okay.

[00:53:43] I'm with you so far, Mickey.

[00:53:45] Yeah, I get it.

[00:53:46] That's awful.

[00:53:47] Wait for me.

[00:53:47] Oh, and Pete's just there.

[00:53:51] And Goofy gets his own giant screen, like, thing.

[00:53:54] That's so funny.

[00:53:56] Keep in mind, very similar plot to the Mickey's racing adventure, except last time it was Pete

[00:54:01] and his goons stealing all of Mickey's stuff.

[00:54:04] Mickey's stuff.

[00:54:05] Yeah.

[00:54:05] Yeah.

[00:54:05] That's right.

[00:54:07] And then that's pretty much it.

[00:54:09] Like, why do they need you to race in the closed race against your friends that are supposed

[00:54:14] to be helping you?

[00:54:15] Right.

[00:54:15] Your friends are supposed to be helping you, but you're all just trying to like beat each

[00:54:20] other.

[00:54:20] They're very enthusiastic, but they want to help you too.

[00:54:22] And yet, the second you start, you are racing against them.

[00:54:26] And they all yell at you, like, every time something happens, they're just shocked.

[00:54:31] Yeah, like we were saying with the sound effects.

[00:54:32] Donald!

[00:54:35] Well, you were supposed to be helping.

[00:54:37] Yeah.

[00:54:38] I should be yelling at you, goddammit.

[00:54:40] Oh, man.

[00:54:41] It is.

[00:54:41] Yeah, it is great.

[00:54:43] The only person who's actually helpful is the professor, because he just soups up our vehicles.

[00:54:49] Oh, yeah.

[00:54:50] And then there's four or five collectibles that you have to, like, car parts that will...

[00:54:55] Oh, I love that part.

[00:54:56] That's one of my favorite things, because that reminds me of Diddy Kong Racing, collecting

[00:55:00] the keys, and it makes you want to explore the tracks.

[00:55:04] So, I believe, which I did not pick up on this at first, but I believe the areas on the map,

[00:55:11] when you're looking at the map and it shows you, like, the next race, the areas that have

[00:55:15] the little weasel icon on them, are actually the areas that have the hidden part.

[00:55:20] Oh!

[00:55:21] What's that?

[00:55:22] Yeah, so Indianapolis right there has a hidden part.

[00:55:25] Yeah, there's a little weasel there.

[00:55:26] Oh!

[00:55:26] I was trying to figure it out.

[00:55:27] I didn't want to look it up.

[00:55:28] I looked up what they were at first, and I was like, oh, okay.

[00:55:32] There's various...

[00:55:33] I looked up the last one.

[00:55:34] I can't remember which one it was.

[00:55:35] I couldn't find one of them, and I was like, okay, I'll look it up.

[00:55:38] But I didn't actually really know that.

[00:55:39] I knew there was collectibles.

[00:55:41] Yep.

[00:55:42] Oh, okay.

[00:55:42] Interesting.

[00:55:43] Okay.

[00:55:43] Yeah, so you get that, and...

[00:55:45] I think that's how you unlock Frantic Finale.

[00:55:48] You get all the hidden parts, and then it unlocks the last Grand Prix, and that's the

[00:55:53] one that's super hard, and you're super fast.

[00:55:56] Yeah, I unlocked it, and I never played it.

[00:55:57] Like, I got to the effort of doing it, and I never played it because I just ran out of

[00:56:00] time or whatever, so...

[00:56:01] I mean, it's not an easy game to beat.

[00:56:04] It's...

[00:56:05] It's...

[00:56:06] Honestly, like, the more time I spent with this game, though, the more I was liking

[00:56:10] it, which usually I get...

[00:56:13] Yeah, I think that's me, too.

[00:56:14] Usually I get sick of games.

[00:56:15] Like, I'll be playing it for a while, and then I'll get sick of it, but this one, I was

[00:56:19] finding myself enjoying it more and more as I kept going.

[00:56:22] I just kept getting better at the mechanics, getting a little bit faster, paying attention

[00:56:25] to my times.

[00:56:27] It was fun.

[00:56:28] And unlocking characters, because unlocking Huey, Dewey, Louie, and the Professor, those

[00:56:33] are all the unlockable characters.

[00:56:34] There's four, but you do...

[00:56:36] I feel like they give you a steady pace at unlocking them, that you don't feel like...

[00:56:40] You have to do something to unlock them, and it feels special and significant every time

[00:56:44] you do.

[00:56:45] Yeah, and they feel different enough.

[00:56:46] It's not like, oh, you're just getting the skin.

[00:56:48] Right.

[00:56:48] You know?

[00:56:49] Right.

[00:56:50] Like you said, they do all have their own stats and stuff, which, by the way, other games

[00:56:54] we're comparing this to in the same gen is Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing.

[00:57:00] You do not see the stats of those racers.

[00:57:02] Right, exactly.

[00:57:02] It's just about feel.

[00:57:04] Like, when I was younger, I think I talked about this with Diddy Kong Racing, me and you

[00:57:06] have.

[00:57:07] I had no idea there were stats on any of the racers.

[00:57:09] I kind of knew, like, I had a feeling like, oh, this guy's heavier, but other than that,

[00:57:15] I never noticed that the acceleration was...

[00:57:17] Nothing, right?

[00:57:18] The slow guys, you can understand, because you're like, oh, he starts slow.

[00:57:21] That's simple for any kid to kind of understand.

[00:57:23] But for me, that was it.

[00:57:25] It's as far as I went.

[00:57:25] With this, it's right in front of you.

[00:57:27] You pick your character, it has all the stats right in front of you, and you notice the difference

[00:57:30] pretty much right away, I would say.

[00:57:32] Oh, yeah.

[00:57:33] It's much easier to pick up on when you know exactly what you're trying to, like, feel

[00:57:36] for.

[00:57:37] Yeah.

[00:57:38] Because I know Mario Kart 64, that one...

[00:57:40] I did notice it in Diddy Kong Racing, because I think the difference in handling as, like,

[00:57:47] like, Crunch versus, like, say, Pipsy is very, very obvious.

[00:57:54] Yeah.

[00:57:54] Yeah.

[00:57:54] Oh, my God.

[00:57:55] He is so frustrating.

[00:57:56] Yeah.

[00:57:56] By the way.

[00:57:57] But, like, Mario Kart, I don't think I really noticed handling as much as I did, like,

[00:58:01] acceleration.

[00:58:02] Acceleration.

[00:58:02] Yeah.

[00:58:03] Because Donkey Kong's really slow.

[00:58:04] Yeah, and I just really felt like, oh, Toad's the best, because he just went the fastest.

[00:58:08] The fastest.

[00:58:09] Mm-hmm.

[00:58:11] But, yeah, this one, I think having the stats laid out adds another element, because then

[00:58:16] you know what you're looking for.

[00:58:19] Because it's not even a one-size-fits-all.

[00:58:21] Like, it's not like someone as Pete is always going to win against someone as Mickey.

[00:58:28] No, I don't think so.

[00:58:29] It depends on the skill and how you...

[00:58:31] Because Mickey will have an advantage over Pete, like, turning corners, whereas Pete will

[00:58:35] have it if it's a straight stretch going faster if you hit the boosts and stuff.

[00:58:40] Yeah.

[00:58:40] So then it's based on your skill, how good you can turn.

[00:58:44] And familiarity with the...

[00:58:45] With the tracks.

[00:58:46] Yeah.

[00:58:47] Yeah.

[00:58:47] Yeah.

[00:58:48] It pays off because, like you mentioned earlier, there's some shortcuts.

[00:58:51] Like, this one's the Grand Canyon one.

[00:58:53] There's a particular shortcut in this one that I just found.

[00:58:56] I stumbled upon, and I used it a couple times.

[00:58:58] You have to really, like, navigate them well to really take advantage of them, which clearly

[00:59:03] in this shot that we're watching here, I did not hit the wall like four times.

[00:59:07] You know what?

[00:59:07] But...

[00:59:08] The shortcuts in all the different tracks are amazing to look for, though.

[00:59:11] That's part of the fun.

[00:59:12] It's cool.

[00:59:13] It's a very classic idea for games.

[00:59:17] I like that.

[00:59:18] I like the idea that they're there.

[00:59:21] You know, often it is...

[00:59:23] It helps with...

[00:59:25] To add variety, too.

[00:59:27] Whether you know it's there or not, you have it, right?

[00:59:30] And it can help you with the higher difficulties and stuff, I think.

[00:59:33] So...

[00:59:35] I...

[00:59:35] I...

[00:59:37] Overall...

[00:59:37] I think the game's pretty good.

[00:59:39] Do I absolutely love it?

[00:59:41] No.

[00:59:43] But...

[00:59:43] I...

[00:59:44] I have fun.

[00:59:45] I don't know.

[00:59:45] I have fun.

[00:59:46] This is one of those...

[00:59:48] If you find it somewhere, it's actually probably going to be pretty cheap.

[00:59:52] And it's totally worth a pickup.

[00:59:55] I have mixed experiences with Mickey games.

[00:59:59] Mostly because...

[01:00:00] Oh, yeah.

[01:00:00] I got the...

[01:00:02] Mickey's Magical Mirror on GameCube at a video game store not long ago.

[01:00:09] Like, maybe last year.

[01:00:10] And I did a review on it.

[01:00:11] I actually was expecting it to be really cool.

[01:00:14] Because it looks so cool from the cover and stuff.

[01:00:17] And I thought it was going to be...

[01:00:18] I was going...

[01:00:19] I was looking for Epic Mickey, like, platformer again.

[01:00:22] Right.

[01:00:22] And that's what it looked like on the back.

[01:00:24] And then it ended up being a point and click.

[01:00:26] And a very mediocre one at that.

[01:00:28] Yeah.

[01:00:29] If it's not...

[01:00:29] If it's not a great point and click, it's not good.

[01:00:32] Dude, they really sell you on that one.

[01:00:33] Because they're like...

[01:00:34] Yeah.

[01:00:35] Shigeru Miyamoto also had a hand in that game design.

[01:00:37] And it had, like, a Luigi's Mansion vibe.

[01:00:40] Oh, shit.

[01:00:41] Like, very similar animations and stuff.

[01:00:43] Really?

[01:00:44] Yep.

[01:00:44] And then it ended up being a really mediocre point and click.

[01:00:47] Oh, that sucks.

[01:00:48] It has its charm.

[01:00:50] But it's not that great.

[01:00:51] But this game is great.

[01:00:53] I...

[01:00:53] I'm going to go as far as to say it's great.

[01:00:56] It's just...

[01:00:57] If you want a fun kart racer.

[01:00:59] And you have a 64.

[01:01:01] And you find this game.

[01:01:02] It's totally worth it.

[01:01:04] I agree.

[01:01:04] You will have hours of fun.

[01:01:07] And it's one of those...

[01:01:08] If you get good and you have your friends.

[01:01:09] And, like, you all get good.

[01:01:11] It could be really competitive.

[01:01:12] And I like that.

[01:01:13] Yes.

[01:01:14] Yes.

[01:01:14] And it still is because there is the difficulty variation.

[01:01:18] And because there is a decent amount of tracks.

[01:01:23] And, like you said, unlocking the characters is still pretty fun.

[01:01:26] Playing it single player like I did was still good.

[01:01:30] Like, I still enjoyed it.

[01:01:31] I don't...

[01:01:32] Personally, it's not a great game for me.

[01:01:35] Based on probably just my lack of skill with it.

[01:01:38] So, I was like, oh, this is...

[01:01:39] You know, whatever.

[01:01:40] But that's part of the reason why I would say.

[01:01:43] But I don't disagree that it is definitely worth playing.

[01:01:46] And definitely something that if you're in the mood for a kart racer.

[01:01:49] One you haven't played.

[01:01:50] And one that will probably surprise you at least a little bit.

[01:01:53] I think this should be on the list.

[01:01:54] From this generation.

[01:01:56] For sure.

[01:01:56] And it's a cool piece of history with Rare.

[01:01:58] Because it's...

[01:01:59] Yeah.

[01:01:59] How often did Rare make Disney games?

[01:02:01] A couple times.

[01:02:04] But, you know, it's just...

[01:02:05] It's in its own unique spot.

[01:02:07] Where it is...

[01:02:10] It's a licensed...

[01:02:12] Like, the biggest license you can think of in the world.

[01:02:15] And it's Rare.

[01:02:16] And it's a kart racer.

[01:02:18] Like, it's just a very interesting cross-section of all these things.

[01:02:22] And for the most part.

[01:02:23] Yeah.

[01:02:23] I think that they pull it off.

[01:02:25] And it's a lot of fun.

[01:02:26] And there's a lot you can dig into.

[01:02:28] Yeah.

[01:02:28] And enjoy.

[01:02:29] So...

[01:02:31] There's me coming in second place instead of first.

[01:02:33] Because I suck.

[01:02:35] Give it...

[01:02:36] Give it...

[01:02:36] Let's just take my word for it.

[01:02:37] And give it two hours.

[01:02:40] Yeah.

[01:02:41] Play it for two hours.

[01:02:42] And I guarantee you'll be hooked.

[01:02:43] And if you're not hooked, it's Dave's fault.

[01:02:49] Hey.

[01:02:50] I'll take it.

[01:02:51] I'll take it.

[01:02:52] At least I get credit for something.

[01:02:53] And if you're struggling, just try a different racer.

[01:02:55] Yeah.

[01:02:56] Find your niche.

[01:02:58] But that's true, though.

[01:03:00] That is definitely something that will actually help.

[01:03:03] I had to do that.

[01:03:04] Because I started with Goofy.

[01:03:05] And I just moved on to, like, Donald and things like that.

[01:03:07] So...

[01:03:08] I do think that it's...

[01:03:10] It does make a difference.

[01:03:11] I started with Mickey.

[01:03:13] Because I wanted to do, like, the base average.

[01:03:16] And then I went on to Goofy.

[01:03:18] I liked Goofy.

[01:03:20] But Pete was, like, dominating in the races.

[01:03:22] Like, he was always right behind me.

[01:03:24] And I was like, well, maybe I can just eliminate Pete if I just be Pete.

[01:03:27] And so I was Pete.

[01:03:28] And my strategy worked.

[01:03:30] And no one else...

[01:03:31] Yep.

[01:03:31] If you can't beat him, join him?

[01:03:32] If you can't beat him, join him.

[01:03:34] And nobody else...

[01:03:35] Nobody else was holding that tight grip on second place that Pete was.

[01:03:40] Really?

[01:03:40] If I lost a race, he didn't automatically win.

[01:03:44] You know what I mean?

[01:03:45] Right.

[01:03:45] Like, it was great.

[01:03:47] What's the Batman quote?

[01:03:50] You've become long enough to become the villain?

[01:03:52] Or whatever?

[01:03:53] That's basically what you did.

[01:03:54] Yes.

[01:03:54] Yes.

[01:03:54] You either die the hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.

[01:03:58] And I just said, you know what?

[01:04:00] We'll just forget about being the hero.

[01:04:01] Let's just go right to the villain.

[01:04:03] Let's do it.

[01:04:05] Become the villain.

[01:04:05] The Jiggy Look Back story.

[01:04:07] Yes.

[01:04:07] Become the villain.

[01:04:08] And Jiggy Look Back, 2024.

[01:04:10] The last quote of 2024.

[01:04:12] Oh, I guess this is the first quote of 2025.

[01:04:15] Hey, we're sitting in 24 right now.

[01:04:17] It's fine.

[01:04:17] We're close.

[01:04:18] We're close to the end already.

[01:04:19] We're very close to the end in a lot of ways.

[01:04:22] Yeah.

[01:04:24] In a lot of different ways.

[01:04:25] In a lot of ways.

[01:04:29] Life.

[01:04:30] Anyway, speaking of life, speaking of 2024 and 2025, Jiggy, exciting year coming up.

[01:04:36] Great year behind you, which is awesome.

[01:04:39] Congrats again.

[01:04:40] We don't need to sort of spoil sort of plans that are coming up and stuff.

[01:04:44] But I assume, you know, letting everybody know that plans are in the works for another exciting year for 2025.

[01:04:53] Oh, yeah.

[01:04:54] Absolutely.

[01:04:55] Got a lot of cool projects.

[01:04:57] So many projects.

[01:04:58] So little time.

[01:04:59] That's where I'm at.

[01:05:00] I have so many ideas and I want to do them all.

[01:05:03] But it's a pick and choose thing.

[01:05:05] I've actually started asking on my YouTube community posts.

[01:05:09] I'm just like, okay, so out of these, what do you like?

[01:05:12] Because I have so many things I want to do.

[01:05:15] That's okay, though.

[01:05:15] But that's okay because it gives you a lane to go in for that time.

[01:05:20] And then you can go back to the other ones if you want to after, right?

[01:05:23] I have to say, the end specifically of 2024 has been a banger of good games, too.

[01:05:32] I agree.

[01:05:33] Which sunk a good chunk of my time.

[01:05:34] Like, somehow I found a way to do YouTube videos, live streaming, and play new games.

[01:05:43] And it was just wild.

[01:05:45] But I'm telling you, October, like, Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, great game.

[01:05:50] Shadow Generations, that was a great game.

[01:05:53] Dragon Ball Sparking Zero, I was actually playing before we started this podcast,

[01:05:57] which I was like, give me five minutes because I'm doing online matches.

[01:06:00] It's pretty fun.

[01:06:02] And there was one more in there I totally forgot.

[01:06:05] Yeah, it's been a solid end of the year.

[01:06:08] Yeah, it's like all at the end of the year, though.

[01:06:11] Oh, Astrobots.

[01:06:14] I have to play Astrobot, man.

[01:06:16] I just, I've only, I've honestly 95% of the time in the last six months been on my Steam Deck.

[01:06:22] Because it's just been, I picked one up.

[01:06:24] I bought one that was on sale.

[01:06:26] It was an OLED one.

[01:06:27] I'm really, really happy with it.

[01:06:30] But, like, the PlayStation, the Xbox, my PC, like, it's just, yep.

[01:06:35] Anything that hasn't been on Steam, I just haven't really played that much this year.

[01:06:39] At least in the second half of the year.

[01:06:41] So, but, yeah.

[01:06:43] And fitting games like this in, I think, is always great.

[01:06:46] Like, now I can play some of these on my Steam Deck if I have to.

[01:06:49] I would prefer to sit and play with the 64 controller in my hand.

[01:06:52] But if I have to, at least I have the option.

[01:06:56] And it can also follow my progress when I do play on Steam Deck on Retro Achievements.

[01:07:01] Which, Jiggy, you have to get on.

[01:07:03] You have to get on that.

[01:07:04] Oh, yeah, I do.

[01:07:05] Although you can't match it up with, like, Everdrive if we're doing that.

[01:07:08] Or the physical, like, actual cartridge.

[01:07:10] So, but if you are emulating, it's cool.

[01:07:12] Gotcha.

[01:07:13] It puts achievements on retro games if you're emulating.

[01:07:16] I do love that.

[01:07:17] That's pretty cool.

[01:07:18] On Retro Arch and stuff like that.

[01:07:20] So, it's been fun.

[01:07:21] I did that as in the last six months as well.

[01:07:23] I got that account going.

[01:07:24] That's fun.

[01:07:26] As far as this show goes, this is the first of 2025.

[01:07:29] I want to say, again, like, thank you for people for just, you know, dealing with my life getting in the way and stuff.

[01:07:36] It's all good stuff.

[01:07:38] Like, we have a family.

[01:07:39] We have a child now.

[01:07:40] It's amazing.

[01:07:42] But, you know, I always wanted, I was always thinking about the show.

[01:07:45] When am I going to come back?

[01:07:45] What am I going to do?

[01:07:46] I hope Jiggy still loves me.

[01:07:48] You know, things like that.

[01:07:49] Like, the stuff that kept me up at night.

[01:07:52] You know, and I just, I want to do it proper.

[01:07:55] So, you know, if there's any suggestions people have, if they want to suggest games as well or formats of the show and stuff,

[01:08:01] I'm happy to sort of take those ideas and we can, you know, we'll talk about them and sort of implement what we can or what we feel works best.

[01:08:09] I'm happy to sort of pivot and stuff.

[01:08:11] There's been a bit of a break here.

[01:08:12] Why not, you know, try something different every once in a while?

[01:08:15] Well, and that's just exciting to do.

[01:08:18] And it's just exciting to be back.

[01:08:19] So, great game to start with.

[01:08:21] We're going to get into some heavy hitters probably in the first half of the year for 2025 as well.

[01:08:28] Yes, I said Banjo-Kazooie.

[01:08:30] It will be here this year.

[01:08:31] I promise.

[01:08:33] Hopefully sooner rather than later.

[01:08:34] It will be here.

[01:08:35] I'm so freaking excited to talk about it.

[01:08:38] And then we have the sequel that we have to get to eventually as well.

[01:08:41] So, remember 64 show across the board on social media everywhere but Twitter at this point.

[01:08:47] So, just so anyone's looking for me.

[01:08:49] Not there anymore.

[01:08:53] And other than that, tell your friends that we're back if they don't know.

[01:08:57] Get the word out there that the show is back and in full force.

[01:09:01] And we'll just keep going through the library of the N64.

[01:09:04] It's an exciting, wacky console.

[01:09:06] This is just the beginning of, I guess, sort of like, I guess phase two maybe of the show.

[01:09:11] Let's just call it that for now.

[01:09:13] Phase two.

[01:09:14] Phase two.

[01:09:15] It's the phase two of the boss fight against Remember 64.

[01:09:19] So, that's where we're at, everybody.

[01:09:20] Thank you so much for joining us.

[01:09:23] Check out Mickey's Speedway USA on Game Boy and on the N64.

[01:09:28] Yeah.

[01:09:28] Until next time, everyone.

[01:09:30] You know, thank you so much for joining us.

[01:09:32] I just thank you.

[01:09:34] Thank you for waiting.

[01:09:35] Thank you for being patient.

[01:09:36] Jiggy, you too, man.

[01:09:37] Like, thank you.

[01:09:39] We're here, man.

[01:09:41] Glad to be here.

[01:09:42] Doesn't this feel right?

[01:09:43] It feels right.

[01:09:44] It feels right.

[01:09:45] It's the winter as we're recording.

[01:09:47] It's so warm and cozy, isn't it?

[01:09:48] It is.

[01:09:49] It is.

[01:09:49] Because it's, oh man, that's what the 64 is all about.

[01:09:52] Crank that baby on and leave it on for 10 hours.

[01:09:55] It gets nice and cozy.

[01:09:56] Put it, you snuggle with it under, you know, in bed and just sort of, ooh, childhood.

[01:10:02] Ooh.

[01:10:03] Oh, God.

[01:10:03] I feel so old and tired right now that it feels good to feel like it's childhood again.

[01:10:07] So, anyways, thanks everyone.

[01:10:11] We'll see you next time.

[01:10:12] Remember 64.

[01:10:14] That's it.

[01:10:14] Okay, bye.

[01:10:15] Bye.

[01:10:16] Bye.
